It is the time for the discussion of birth control, in spite of the recent great loss of manhood in Europe,--and to some extent in the U.S. Out of 200,000 individual's who die from it annually in the United States, 50,000 are children. The economic loss alone, figuring the average child's life as seven and one-half years and its annual cost to the community at only $200, is $75,000,000. At least 50 per cent of women afflicted with tuberculosis, even when only in the relatively early and curable stages, die as a result of pregnancy which could have been avoided. That insanity, idiocy, epilepsy, and alcoholic predisposition are often transmitted from parent to child is now universally admitted.

The article focuses on tuberculosis cases in France after the war. The word tuberculosis comes from tubercle, which signifies a small rounded body, resembling a pin head and easily visible to the naked eye. The bacilli are lodged in these tubercles, of which they cause the formation. These germs give off certain poisonous substances called toxins which cause the symptoms of pulmonary tuberculosis, early as well as late. The earlier symptoms, which can be easily recognized by the layman, are a long-continued cough with or without expectoration or hoarseness, loss of flesh, flush or pallor in the face, feverish sensations in the afternoon, occasional night sweats, chilly sensations in the morning, loss of appetite and sometimes a little streak of blood in the expectoration.

In 1927 I1 ventured to call attention to the relatively greater mortality from tuberculosis among young girls between 16 and 19 as compared with boys of the same age. This situation was revealed by the New York statistics.Since the publication of that article I have learned that in other large cities there has also been observed an increase in the morbidity and mortality of tuberculosis among young women. A general verification of this comes to us from Dr. Dearholt of Milwaukee who, a few months ago, reported that for the first time in the history of the Wisconsin Tuberculosis Association all the state's twenty sanatoriums are filled with patients, with long waiting lists at many of them, this situation being due to the increase of tuberculosis among young girls. Relapses from tuberculosis in the civilian population, particularly among the working classes, present a most difficult medical and economic problem; but when we are dealing with soldiers and sailors, that is to say, young men between the ages of 20 and 36, representing the flower of the manhood of the nation, it becomes all the more serious. At no epoch in medical history has the tuberculosis problem been treated by the medical profession with more energy, more enthusiasm, and more success than at the present time. This awakening to the danger of tuberculosis, particularly in its pulmonary form, consumption, is primarily the result of the labors of four great men, Villemin1, Koch,2 Cornet,3 and Fränkel.4 It was Villemin who first showed beyond a shadow of doubt the transmissibility of tuberculosis and its infectious character. To Koch we are indebted for the proof of the microbic origin of tuberculosis; to Cornet and his pupils for the demonstration of the infectiousness of tuberculous dust, and to B.
