Well-developed α clusters are known to exist in light N=Z nuclei, and their properties are reasonably well described with modern nuclear structure theories. However, 'modestly' developed clusters in medium to heavy nuclei remain little understood, both theoretically and experimentally. Extension of the focus to include modestly developed clusters leads us to a concept of 'generalized clusters' and 'cluster ubiquitousness'. The former includes clusters more weakly bound than an α cluster, such as deuteron, triton and He3 , and even clusters partially broken owing to nuclear medium effects. The latter means the existence of clusters in any nuclei, where cluster development was not previously discussed. Effects of the tensor and the spin–orbit interactions on the coexistence of clusters with independent nucleons are discussed using recent nuclear theoretical models. A mixture of the clusters with shell-like components plays an essential role in the synthesis of elements in the universe and the origin of life, together with an α decay. It is also pointed out that clustering in heavy nuclei may accelerate fission and fusion processes. Future experimental plans using cluster knockout reactions, which have the potential to extract information of 'generalized clusters' in a variety of nuclei including stable and unstable nuclei, are also discussed. The calcium isotopes are an ideal system to investigate the evolution of shell structure and magic numbers. Although the properties of surface nucleons in calcium have been well studied, probing the structure of deeply bound nucleons remains a challenge. Here, we report on the first measurement of unbound states in 53Ca and 55Ca, populated from 54,56Ca(p,pn) reactions at a beam energy of around 216 MeV/nucleon at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotopes Beam Factory. The resonance properties, partial cross sections, and momentum distributions of these unbound states were analyzed. Orbital angular momentum l assignments were extracted from momentum distributions based on calculations using the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) reaction model. The resonances at excitation energies of 5516(41)keV in 53Ca and 6000(250)keV in 55Ca indicate a significant l =3 component, providing the first experimental evidence for the ν0f7/2 single-particle strength of unbound hole states in the neutron-rich Ca isotopes. The observed excitation energies and cross-sections point towards extremely localized and well separated strength distributions, with some fragmentation for the ν0f7/2 orbital in 55Ca. These results are in good agreement with predictions from shell-model calculations using the effective GXPF1Bs interaction and ab initio calculations and diverge markedly from the experimental distributions in the nickel isotones at Z=28.

The cluster-knockout reaction project, ONOKORO, has been launched to elucidate the formation mechanism of clusters in atomic nuclei. For the inverse-kinetics cluster-knockout reaction experiments, a new detector array is under development to measure energies and angles of light ions emitted in the reactions. The silicon tracker tracks the particles with good angular and energy-loss resolutions. A performance test of the silicon strip detectors with a thickness of 100 μ m and a strip width of 100 μ m was performed using prototype silicon detectors. The mono-energetic proton and α -particle beams were irradiated on the silicon detectors. The energy-loss spectra in silicon detectors showed a good signal-to-noise ratio. The threshold level for signal detection is seven sigma of noise level. Their dynamic ranges were optimized wide enough to detect charge number Z = 1 and Z = 2 ions emitted in the cluster-knockout reactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have launched a new research project named "ONOKORO" to elucidate the formation mechanism of clusters in atomic nuclei. The project comprehensively investigates clustering phenomena in the medium-to-heavy mass region with inverse-kinematics cluster-knockout reactions at the intermediate energy facilities. The new detector array named "TOGAXSI" is under construction for this purpose. It measures scattering angles and the energies of deuterons, tritons, 3 He, and α particles emitted at forward angles from the cluster-knockout reactions. It also measures the recoil protons emitted from the scattering events at large angles. High-angular and high-energy resolutions with wide solid angles are required to achieve a good cluster separation energy resolution and a reasonably high yield. Free nucleon-nucleon (N - N) t -matrix effective interaction has been evaluated using realistic N-N interaction, V N − N (r) with repulsive core potential for energies below the pion production threshold. For this relative motion wave functions are obtained by solving the Schrödinger equations incorporating the realistic interaction. The resultant t -matrix effective interaction is not only a function of the N - N separation, total spin and isospin of the interacting nucleons but is also found to be a strong function of L , the multipole moment. All the t L (r) 's are found to vanish at r = 0 , in contradiction to the commonly employed M3Y form. In this approach, with the change of energy, one does not have to search for new parameters to evaluate these t L (r) 's. Even though the V N − N (r) 's are real the t L (r) 's are intrinsically complex. These features are expected to make huge impact on the finite range predictions of the (p,2p), (p,pn) and (n,2n) reactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We report for the first time the discrimination of the core fragment knockout and valence nucleon knockout reaction mechanisms at medium energy range, by the use of the recoil proton tagging technique. Intense 8He beams at 82.3 MeV/u were supplied by the RIPS beam line at RIKEN, and impinged on both hydrogen and carbon targets. Recoil protons were detected in coincidence with the forward moving core fragments and neutrons. The core fragment knockout mechanism is identified through the polar angle correlation and checked by various kinematics relations. This mechanism may be used to extract the cluster structure information of unstable nuclei. On the other hand, with the selection of the tagged valence nucleon knockout mechanism, a narrower peak of 7He ground state is obtained. The extracted neutron spectroscopic factor is relatively smaller than the no-tagged one, and is in good agreement with the prediction of ab initio Greenʼs function Monte Carlo calculations. Along with the development of the radioactive nuclear beam facility, the study of the structure of unstable nuclei has progressed rapidly over the last few decades. Due to the weakly binding property, the structure information of the unstable nuclei comes primarily from the scattering or reaction experiments. Therefore it would be very important to understand clearly the reaction mechanism involved in the experiment. We outlined here the major reaction mechanisms which are adequate to the study of unstable nuclei, with the focus on the new phenomena and methods in comparison with those with traditional stable nucleus beam. Especially emphasized are the breakup and knockout reactions, developed as accurate tools for spectroscopy investigation into the nuclear structure with low intensity secondary beam. Couplings of the breakup channel to the elastic scattering and the fusion and transfer reactions are also reviewed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Knockout reaction experiment was carried out by using the He beams at 61.2 MeV/u impinging on a CH target. The α core fragments at forward angles were detected in coincidence with the recoiled protons at larger angles. From this exclusive measurement the valence nucleon knockout mechanism and the core knockout mechanism can be distinguished by the relation between the polar angles of the core fragments and the recoiled protons, respectively. The O (g.s.) 16 + 8 Be (g.s.) structure of the ground state of 24Mg nucleus has been probed experimentally using direct knockout reaction Mg 24 (O 16 , 2 16 O) 8 Be in the quasi free scattering kinematics domain. The direct 16O-cluster knockout finite range prediction indicates a fair amount of O (g.s.) 16 + 8 Be (g.s.) component in the Mg (g.s.) 24. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
