Between 1870 and 1914 there was an expansion of the ancient universities in England and the appearance of "redbrick" universities. Ways in which architects attempted to establish a new style of collegiate architecture suggesting the antiquity and prestige of the universities, yet appropriate for the late nineteenth century, are examined. Mr. Knight summarizes and discusses some of the more important results which are reported in detail in Mr. Alexander's monograph Intelligence, Concrete and Abstract. The new method of Multiple Factor Analysis reveals the existence of a number of group factors, in addition to the general factor ‘g’ which is involved in all cognitive tasks. The group factors comprise a verbal factor; a practical factor; a temperamental factor which is possibly persistence, and appears to be the most important single factor in educational achievement; and a fourth factor whose nature is at present obscure. The view that character can be judged from the face has had distinguished advocates and enjoys considerable popularity even to-day. The author (who is the Anderson Lecturer in Comparative Psychology at the University of Aberdeen) here distinguishes three main types of physiognomical theory—(i) the Aristotelian view that a man's character can be judged by observing which animal he most closely resembles, (ii) the view of Lavater that specific correlations exist between character-qualities and the shape of the various features, and (iii) the type of physiognomy which studies, not the structure of the face, but the traces left by its habitual expressions. The article relates the study conducted by a professor of psychology at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, which examines the post-graduate training of psychologists. The paper which was read at the Annual General Meeting of the British Psychological Society in April 1940, introduces the five main groups of psychologists for whom postgraduate training must be offered. The study found out that these group of psychologists must undergo different training and that the training must comprise systematic courses that provide instructions in normal child psychology, psychology of people with disabilities and psychometry.

The article presents the author's views on professor L. S. Hearnshaw's thesis related to industrial psychology published in the previous issue of the journal. The author supports Hearnshaw's views that industrial psychology must be concerned with the factors influencing behavior at work, and that it should pay attention to the influence of social factors, but he also differs with Hearnshaw in stating that the latter has exaggerated the urgency of minimizing the industrial stress.

The writer of this article, Reader in Psychology in the University of Aberdeen and formerly a member of the Institute's staff, presents evidence obtained by him that bears on the decreasing attractiveness of teaching as a profession. He discusses the main causes of the consequent decline in the supply of teachers and the remedies employable in order to arrest it. He alludes particularly to the recent decline in the numbers of University Arts students and to the following factors which his inquiry established as determining, in order of importance, the present unpopularity of the teaching profession — low salaries, low status, unattractive training arrangements and unattractive working conditions. The article features the experiment of Gregor MacGregor called Achievement Tests in the Primary School, which depicts the performance of the Scottish students. MacGregor is one of the best known and most talented of the Directors of Education in Scotland. He shows his investigation under the Scottish Council for Research in Education on the performance of Scottish children in American tests of scholastic achievement and the applicability of American achievement tests to Scottish pupils.
