Bulk studies have revealed a first-order valence phase transition in Ba$_2$PrRu$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$O$_6$ ($0.10 \le x \le 0.25$), which is absent in the parent compounds with $x = 0$ (Pr$^{3+}$) and $x =1$ (Pr$^{4+}$), which exhibit antiferromagnetic order with transition temperatures $T_{\rm N} = 120$ and 72 K, respectively. In the present study, we have used magnetization, heat capacity, neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and x-ray absorption measurements to investigate the nature of the Pr ion in $x =0.1$. The magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity of $x =0.1$ show a clear sign of the first order valence phase transition below 175 K, where the Pr valence changes from 3+ to 4+. Neutron diffraction analysis reveals that $x =0.1$ crystallizes in a monoclinic structure with space group $P2_1/n$ at 300 K, but below 175 K two phases coexist, the monoclinic having the Pr ion in a 3+ valence state and a cubic one ($Fm\overline{3}m$) having the Pr ion in a 4+ valence state. Clear evidence of an antiferromagnetic ordering of the Pr and Ru moments is found in the monoclinic phase of the $x = 0.1$ compound below 110 K in the neutron diffraction measurements. Meanwhile the cubic phase remains paramagnetic down to 2 K, a temperature below which heat capacity and susceptibility measurements reveal a ferromagnetic ordering. High energy inelastic neutron scattering data reveal well-defined high-energy magnetic excitations near 264 meV at temperatures below the valence transition. The high energy excitations are assigned to the Pr$^{4+}$ ions in the cubic phase and the low energy excitations to the Pr$^{3+}$ ions in the monoclinic phase. The ordered hexagonal perovskite Ba2CuTeO6 hosts weakly coupled S=1/2 spin ladders produced by an orbital ordering of Cu2+. The magnetic susceptibility chi(T) of Ba2CuTeO6 is well described by that expected for isolated spin ladders with exchange coupling of J~86 K but shows a deviation from the expected thermally activated behavior at low temperatures below T*~25 K. An anomaly in chi(T), indicative of magnetic ordering, is observed at T_mag=16 K. No clear signature of long-range ordering, however, is captured in NMR, specific heat or neutron diffraction measurements at and below T_mag. The marginal magnetic transition, indicative of strong quantum fluctuations, is evidence that Ba2CuTeO6 is in very close proximity to a quantum critical point between a magnetically ordered phase and a gapped spin liquid controlled by inter-ladder couplings., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. We present new magnetic heat capacity and neutron scattering results for two magnetically frustrated molybdate pyrochlores: $S=1$ oxide Lu$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ and $S={\frac{1}{2}}$ oxynitride Lu$_2$Mo$_2$O$_5$N$_2$. Lu$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ undergoes a transition to an unconventional spin glass ground state at $T_f {\sim} 16$ K. However, the preparation of the corresponding oxynitride tunes the nature of the ground state from spin glass to quantum spin liquid. The comparison of the static and dynamic spin correlations within the oxide and oxynitride phases presented here reveals the crucial role played by quantum fluctuations in the selection of a ground state. Furthermore, we estimate an upper limit for a gap in the spin excitation spectrum of the quantum spin liquid state of the oxynitride of ${\Delta} {\sim} 0.05$ meV or ${\frac{\Delta}{|\theta|}}\sim0.004$, in units of its antiferromagnetic Weiss constant ${\theta} {\sim}-121$ K., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

We use neutron diffraction, magnetometry and low temperature heat capacity to probe giant magneto-elastic coupling in CoMnSi-based antiferromagnets and to establish the origin of the entropy change that occurs at the metamagnetic transition in such compounds. We find a large difference between the electronic density of states of the antiferromagnetic and high magnetisation states. The magnetic field-induced entropy change is composed of this contribution and a significant counteracting lattice component, deduced from the presence of negative magnetostriction. In calculating the electronic entropy change, we note the importance of using an accurate model of the electronic density of states, which here varies rapidly close to the Fermi energy., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures. Using high resolution neutron diffraction and capacitance dilatometry we show that the thermal evolution of the helimagnetic state in CoMnSi is accompanied by a change in inter-atomic distances of up to 2%, the largest ever found in a metallic magnet. Our results and the picture of competing exchange and strongly anisotropic thermal expansion that we use to understand them sheds light on a new mechanism for large magnetoelastic effects that does not require large spin-orbit coupling., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures (3 in colour)

We have investigated the antiferromagnetic insulating phase of the Mott-Hubbard insulator V$_2$O$_3$ by resonant x-ray Bragg diffraction at the vanadium K-edge. Combining the information obtained from azimuthal angle scans, linear incoming polarization scans and by fitting collected data to the scattering amplitude derived from the established chemical I2/a and magnetic space groups we provide evidence of the ordering motif of anapolar moments (which results from parity violation coupling to an electromagnetic field). Experimental data (azimuthal dependence and polarization analysis) collected at space-group forbidden Bragg reflections are successfully accounted within our model in terms of vanadium magnetoelectric multipoles. We demonstrate that resonant x-ray diffraction intensities in all space-group forbidden Bragg reflections of the kind $(hkl)_m$ with odd $h$ are produced by an E1-E2 event. The determined tensorial parameters offer a test for ab-initio calculations in this material, that can lead to a deeper and more quantitative understanding of the physical properties of V$_2$O$_3$.

The structural properties of BiMn$O_3$ were determined from neutron powder diffraction data as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The structure at all temperatures was found to be centrosymmetric with space group $C2/c$, which is incompatible with ferroelectricity. At T$_C\simeq 100 K$, we observed the onset of a large magnetoelastic strain, proportional to the square of the magnetization. We interpret this structural rearrangement, together with the previously observed magnetodielectric anomalies, as due to the need to optimize the partially frustrated magnetic interactions., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The structural and magnetic properties of the hexagonal four-layer form of SrMnO$_3$ have been investigated by combining magnetization measurements, electron diffraction and high-resolution synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction. Below 350K, there is subtle structural phase transition from hexagonal symmetry (space group $P6_3/mmc$) to orthorhombic symmetry (space group $C222_1$) where the hexagonal metric is preserved. The second-order phase transition involves a slight tilting of the corner-sharing Mn$_{2}$O$_{9}$ units composed of 2 face-sharing MnO$_6$ octahedra and the associated displacement of Sr$^{2+}$ cations. The phase transition is described in terms of symmetry-adapted displacement modes of the high symmetry phase. Upon further cooling, long range magnetic order with propagation vector $\mathbf{k}=(0,0,0)$ sets in below 300K. The antiferromagnetic structure, analyzed using representation theory, shows a considerably reduced magnetic moment indicating the crucial role played by direct exchange between Mn centers of the Mn$_{2}$O$_{9}$ units., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables

The magnetic ground state of the antiferromagnet Kondo lattice compound Ce8Pd24Ga has been investigated using neutron powder diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and zero-field muon spin relaxation measurements. The neutron diffraction analysis, below TN (3.6(0.2)K), reveals a commensurate type-C antiferromagnetic structure with the ordered state magnetic moment of \~0.36 mB/Ce-atom along the cubic <111> direction. The analysis of the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data based on the crystal field (CF) model reveals a doublet ground state with a ground state moment of 1.29 mB/Ce-atom. The observed magnetic moment from neutron diffraction, which is small compared to the expected value from CF-analysis, is attributed to screening of the local Ce moment by the Kondo effect. This is supported by the observed Kondo-type resistivity and a small change in the entropy of Ce8Pd24Ga at TN. The zero-field muon spin relaxation rate exhibits a sharp increase below TN indicating ordering of Ce moments, in agreement with the neutron diffraction data. The present studies reveal that the physical properties of Ce8Pd24Ga are governed by the onsite Kondo compensation, the moment stabilizing intersite RKKY interaction and the crystal field effect., Comment: 11 pages and 7Figs, Phys.
