The purpose of this work is to spectroscopically analyse the classical Cepheid V708 Car. A preliminary check of the spectrum of V708 Car showed that this is a lithium-rich supergiant. We also found that V708 Car has an unusual chemical composition in that the abundances of various elements correlate with their condensation temperatures. We tried to find an explanation of this feature, which is unusual for classical Cepheids. For the spectroscopic analysis, we used methods based on the assumption of local and non-local thermodynamic equilibrium. We determined the fundamental parameters of our program star V708 Car. This long-period Cepheid has a mass of about 12 M$_{\odot}$. We derived the abundances of 27 chemical elements in this star. They are clearly correlated with their condensation temperature: the higher the condensation temperature, the lower the abundance (there are exceptions for sodium and barium, however). We explain this peculiar chemical composition of the V708 Car atmosphere by the gas-dust separation in the envelope of this star. A similar mechanism leads to the observed peculiarities of the chemical composition of $\lambda$ Boo, W Vir, and asymptotic giant branch stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

This paper presents the results of analysing the integrated light (IL) low-resolution spectra of globular clusters (GCs) in the M31 and Centaurus A groups of galaxies. The sample consists of eight very metal-poor GCs ($\rm [Fe/H]\le -2$ dex) with high signal-to-noise ratio spectra acquired with the telescopes: the 6-m SAO RAS (BTA), the Southern African Large (SALT) and the 6.5-m Magellan (MMT). We study the influence of contribution of the horizontal branch stars on the hydrogen Balmer line profiles in the IL spectra. By modelling the Balmer lines, as well as the metal lines in the observed spectra, we determine the optimum parameters of stellar evolution isochrones and, consequently, the parameters of the atmospheres of the cluster stars. For all the studied GCs, the parameters of horizontal branch stars set by the selected isochrones, the corresponding ages, and carbon abundances are presented for the first time. The abundances of several other elements (Mg, Ca, Ti, Cr, and Mn) were determined for five GCs for the first time. All the studied GCs have blue horizontal branches and are older than 10 Gyr. Their chemical abundances, with the exception of Mg and Mn, are in good agreement with the abundances of stars in the Galactic field. The reasons of low [Mg/Fe] and of high [Mn/Fe] are discussed. Study of the fundamental properties of stellar populations in old globular clusters facilitates a better understanding of the formation processes of their parent galaxies and nucleosynthesis in the early Universe., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

In the framework of the ongoing project, aimed at the systematical studying galaxies in nearby voids, we conducted spectroscopy with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) of 62 objects from the Nearby Void Galaxy (NVG) sample. They include 8 remaining objects of the 60 preselected candidates to eXtremely Metal-Poor (XMP) dwarfs, two known void XMP dwarfs and 52 void dwarfs residing within the Local Volume. For 47 galaxies residing in the nearby voids, we obtained spectra of the diverse quality. For 42 of them, we detected the Hydrogen and Oxygen lines that allowed us to get estimates of O/H in the observed HII regions. For 12 of the 42 objects, we detected the faint line [Oiii]4363, that allowed us to directly derive the electron temperature T_e and obtain their gas O/H by the direct method. 14 objects with the undetected [Oiii]4363 line fall to the lowest metallicities range (12+log(O/H) < 7.5 dex). For them, we use a carefully checked new empirical 'Strong line' method of Izotov et al. For 14 other objects with only strong lines detected and with 12+log(O/H) of ~7.5-8.0 dex, we used the modified version of 'semi-empirical' method of Izotov and Thuan. It accounts for effect of the excitation parameter O32 on T_e. 16 new galaxies are found with parameter 12+log(O/H) < 7.39 dex. Of them, four have 12+log(O/H) = 7.07 - 7.20 dex. Of the 60 observed NVG objects, 15 have mistaken radial velocities in HyperLEDA. They do not reside in the nearby voids., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS. 18 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables. KK242 is a LV dwarf of transition type residing in the void environment. Koda et al. present clear indications on its connection with Scd galaxy NGC6503. This implies the distance to KK242 of ~6.3 Mpc and its M_B = -10.5 mag. Its radial velocity, known from the Effelsberg radio telescope \HI\ observations, reveals, however, the difference with that of NGC6503, dV ~ 400 km/s. If real, this fact implies the substantial constraints on its origin. To clear-up the issue of KK242 radial velocity, we obtained with the SAO 6-m telescope spectra of its faint star-forming (SF) complex. H-alpha and H-beta emission is detected in two adjacent compact regions, the southern and northern, separated by ~2" (~60 pc). Their mean radial velocity is V_hel = -66 km/s, ~100 km/s lower than that of NGC6503. We use the HST Legacy Archive images and photometry of individual stars from the Extragalactic Distance Database, available for KK242, to identify in the SF complex the exciting hot stars, the probable BHeB and RHeB stars and a supernova remnant. We address, based on the possible range of its gas metallicity, the probable evolutionary paths of KK242. Using package Cloudy and parameters of the exciting B0V stars, we conclude that the observed flux ratio of [Sii] doublet to H-alpha is consistent with the value of 12+log(O/H) ~7.35+/-0.18 dex, expected for a stripped void dIrr galaxy., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, published at MNRAS

The dwarf irregular galaxy HIPASS J1131-31 was discovered as a source of HI emission at low redshift in such close proximity of a bright star that we call it Peekaboo. The galaxy resolves into stars in images with Hubble Space Telescope, leading to a distance estimate of 6.8+-0.7 Mpc. Spectral optical observations with the Southern African Large Telescope reveal HIPASS J1131-31 to be one of the most extremely metal-poor galaxies known with the gas-phase oxygen abundance 12+log(O/H) = 6.99+-0.16 dex via the direct [OIII] 4363 line method and 6.87+-0.07 dex from the two strong line empirical methods. The red giant branch of the system is tenuous compared with the prominence of the features of young populations in the color-magnitude diagram, inviting speculation that star formation in the galaxy only began in the last few Gyr., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, published in MNRAS

In this study, we investigate the period changes of eight short-period Type II Cepheids of the BL Her subtype, i.e., with periods in the 1-4 day range. The $O-C$ diagrams for these stars are constructed using all suitable observational data from ground and space surveys. This spans a time interval of over one century and includes digitized photographic plates as well as photometry from the literature. The $O-C$ diagrams show parabolic evolutionary trends, which indicate the presence of both increasing and decreasing periods for these eight short period stars. These period changes are in good agreement with the recent theoretical evolutionary framework and stellar evolution models for BL Her stars. The pulsation stability test proposed by Lombard and Koen also suggests that the changes in the periods are real., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the second part of results of the on-going project of searching for and studying eXtremely Metal-Poor (XMP, adopted as those with Z(gas) <~ Zo/30, or with 12+log(O/H) <~ 7.21~dex) very gas-rich blue dwarfs in voids.They were first identified in course of the 'unbiased' study of galaxy population in the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. These very rare and unusual galaxies seem to be the best proxies of so-called Very Young Galaxies (VYGs) defined recently in model simulations by Tweed et al. To date, for 16 preselected void XMP candidates, we obtained with the SAO 6-m telescope (BTA) spectra suitable for determination of O/H. For majority of the observed galaxies, the principal line [OIII]4363 used for the direct classical T_e method of O/H determination, is undetected. Therefore, to estimate O/H, we use a new 'Strong-lines' method by Izotov et al. This appears the most accurate empirical O/H estimator for the range of 12+log(O/H) < 7.4-7.5. For higher O/H objects, we use the semi-empirical method by Izotov and Thuan with our modification accounting for variance of the excitation parameter O32. Six of those 16 candidates are found to be the confident XMP dwarfs. In addition, eight studied galaxies are somewhat less metal-poor, with 12+log(O/H) = 7.24-7.33. They also can fall into the category of VYG candidates. With account of the recently published by us and previously known (9 prototype galaxies) XMP gas-rich void objects, the new findings increase the number of this type galaxies to the total of 19., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, 11 tables, v2 - small change in the title in accordance with the MNRAS version

We report the results of optical spectroscopy of the Small Magellanic Cloud supernova remnant (SNR) MCSNR J0127-7332 and the mass donor Be star, 2dFS 3831, in its associated high-mass X-ray binary SXP 1062 carried out with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). Using high-resolution long-slit spectra, we measured the expansion velocity of the SNR shell of \approx 140 km/s, indicating that MCSNR J0127-7332 is in the radiative phase. We found that the observed line ratios in the SNR spectrum can be understood if the local interstellar medium is ionized by 2dFS 3831 and/or OB stars around the SNR. We propose that MCSNR J0127-7332 is the result of supernova explosion within a bubble produced by the stellar wind of the supernova progenitor and that the bubble was surrounded by a massive shell at the moment of supernova explosion. We estimated the age of MCSNR J0127-7332 to be \la 10 000 yr. We found that the spectrum of 2dFS 3831 changes with orbital phase. Namely, the equivalent width of the Halpha emission line decreased by \approx 40 per cent in \approx 130 d after periastron passage of the neutron star and then almost returned to its original value in the next \approx 100 d. Also, the spectrum of 2dFS 3831 obtained closest to the periastron epoch (about three weeks after the periastron) shows a noticeable emission line of He II \lambda 4686, which disappeared in the next about two weeks. This paper presents results from photometric and statistical-parallax analysis of a sample of 850 field RR Lyrae (RRL) variables. The photometric and spectroscopic data for sample RRLs are obtained from (1) our new spectroscopic observations (for 448 RRLs) carried out with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT); (2) our photometric observations using the 1.0-m telescope of the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO), and (3) literature. These are combined with accurate proper motion data from the second release of \textit{Gaia} mission (DR2). This study primarily determines the velocity distribution of solar neighborhood RRLs, and it also calibrates the zero points of the RRLs visual V-band luminosity-metallicity (LZ or $M_V-$[\text{Fe/H}]) relation and their period-luminosity-metallicity (PLZ) relations in the \textit{WISE} $W_1-$ and \textit{2MASS} $Ks-$band. The calibrated PLZ and LZ relations are used to estimate the Galactic Center distance and the distance modulus of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), which are found to be 7.99$\pm$0.49\,kpc and 18.46$\pm$0.09 \,mag, respectively. All our results are in excellent agreement with available literature based on statistical parallax analysis, but are considerably more accurate and precise. Moreover, the zero-points of our calibrated PLZ and LZ relations are quite consistent with current results found by other techniques and yield the LMC distance modulus that is within 0.04\,mag of the current most precise estimate., Comment: 20 pages,21 figueres

We present the results of study of the Galactic candidate luminous blue variable Wray 15-906, revealed via detection of its infrared circumstellar shell (of \approx2 pc in diameter) with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and the Herschel Space Observatory. Using the stellar atmosphere code CMFGEN and the Gaia parallax, we found that Wray 15-906 is a relatively low-luminosity, log(L/Lsun)\approx5.4, star of temperature of 25\pm2 kK, with a mass-loss rate of \approx3\times10^{-5} Msun/yr, a wind velocity of 280\pm50 km/s, and a surface helium abundance of 65\pm2 per cent (by mass). In the framework of single star evolution, the obtained results suggest that Wray 15-906 is a post-red supergiant star with initial mass of \approx26\pm2 Msun and that before exploding as a supernova it could transform for a short time into a WN11h star. Our spectroscopic monitoring with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) does not reveal significant changes in the spectrum of Wray 15-906 during the last 8 yr, while the V-band light curve of this star over years 1999--2019 shows quasi-periodic variability with a period of \approx1700 d and an amplitude of \approx0.1 mag. We estimated the mass of the shell to be 2.9\pm0.5 Msun assuming the gas-to-dust mass ratio of 200. The presence of such a shell indicates that Wray 15-906 has suffered substantial mass loss in the recent past. We found that the open star cluster C1128-631 could be the birth place of Wray 15-906 provided that this star is a rejuvenated product of binary evolution (a blue straggler)., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We report the discovery of a handful of optical hydrogen-poor knots in the central part of an extended infrared nebula centred on the [WO1] star WR 72, obtained by spectroscopic and imaging observations with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) images of the nebula show that it is composed of an extended almost circular halo (of $\approx6$ arcmin or $\approx2.4$ pc in diameter) and an elongated and apparently bipolar inner shell (of a factor of six smaller size), within which the knots are concentrated. Our findings indicate that WR 72 is a new member of the rare group of hydrogen-poor planetary nebulae, which may be explained through a very late thermal pulse of a post-AGB star, or by a merger of two white dwarfs., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the discovery of a square axisymmetric circumstellar nebula around the emission-line star HD 93795 in archival Spitzer Space Telescope 24 micron data. We classify HD 93795 as an B9 Ia star using optical spectra obtained with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). A spectral analysis carried out with the stellar atmosphere code FASTWIND indicates that HD 93795 only recently left the main sequence and is evolving redward for the first time. We discuss possible scenarios for the origin of the nebula and suggest that HD 93795 was originally a binary system and that the nebula was formed because of merger of the binary components. We also discuss a discrepancy between distance estimates for HD 93795 based on the Gaia data and the possible membership of this star of the Car OB1 association, and conclude that HD 93795 could be at the same distance as Car OB1., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In the framework of an ongoing project aimed at searching for and studying eXtremely Metal-Poor (XMP) very gas-rich blue dwarfs in nearby voids, we conducted spectroscopy with the 11-m Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) of 26 candidates, preselected in the first paper of this series (PEPK19). For 23 of them, we detected Oxygen lines, allowing us to estimate the gas O/H ratio. For ten of them, the oxygen abundance is found to be very low, in the range of 12+log(O/H)=6.95-7.30 dex. Of those, four void dwarfs have 12+log(O/H) < 7.19, or Z < Zo/30. For the majority of observed galaxies, the faint line [OIII]4363A used to estimate O/H with the direct T_e method appeared either too noisy or was not detected. We therefore use the semi-empirical method of Izotov, Thuan (2007) for these spectra, or, when applicable, the new 'Strong line' method of Izotov et al. (2019b). We present and discuss the results for all void dwarfs observed in this work. We also compare their O/H values with O/H values of ~140 void galaxies available from our recent papers. We address the properties of the newly found unusual void XMP dwarfs and compare them with those for ten known prototype void XMP objects. The latter small group is outstanding based on their very small mass fraction of stars (only 0.01--0.02 of the baryonic mass), the blue colours of stars in the outer body (indicating a non-cosmological age for the main star-forming episode), and the low gas metallicity (several times lower than expected for their luminosity)., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 10 tables, submitted to MNRAS

We introduce a project aimed at systematically searching for eXtremely Metal-Poor (XMP) very gas-rich blue dwarfs in voids in the nearby Universe. Several such galaxies were first identified in the course of an unbiased study of the galaxy population in the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. These very rare and unusual galaxies appear to be the best proxies for the so-called Very Young Galaxies (VYGs) defined recently in the model simulations by Tweed et al. (2018). We discuss the main properties of ten prototype objects residing in nearby voids and formulate criteria to search for similar dwarfs in other voids. The recently published sample of 1354 Nearby Void Galaxies (NVG) is used to identify a subsample of 60 void dwarf XMP candidates. We provide a list of these XMP candidates with their main parameters and finding charts. These candidates are the subjects of subsequent spectral, photometric and HI studies in the accompanying papers. Looking ahead, with reference to the submitted accompanying papers, we find that this study results in the discovery of many new XMP dwarfs with 12+log(O/H) ~ 7.0-7.3 dex., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. We report the discovery of a spiral-like nebula with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and the results of optical spectroscopy of its associated star TYC 8606-2025-1 with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). We find that TYC 8606-2025-1 is a G8 III star of $\approx3$ M$_\odot$, showing a carbon depletion by a factor of two and a nitrogen enhancement by a factor of three. We also derived an excess of s-process elements, most strongly for barium, which is a factor of three overabundant, indicating that TYC 8606-2025-1 is a mild barium star. We thereby add a new member to the small group of barium stars with circumstellar nebulae. Our radial velocity measurements indicate that TYC 8606-2025-1 has an unseen binary companion. The advanced evolutionary stage of TYC 8606-2025-1, together with the presence of a circumstellar nebula, implies an initial mass of the companion of also about 3 M$_\odot$. We conclude that the infrared nebula, due to its spiral shape, and because it has no optical counterpart, was ejected by the companion as a consequence of a very late thermal pulse, during about one orbital rotation., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Wide field surveys for transiting planets are well suited to searching diverse stellar populations, enabling a better understanding of the link between the properties of planets and their parent stars. We report the discovery of HAT-P-69b (TOI 625.01) and HAT-P-70b (TOI 624.01), two new hot Jupiters around A stars from the HATNet survey which have also been observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). HAT-P-69b has a mass of 3.58 +0.58/-0.58 MJup and a radius of 1.676 +0.051/-0.033 RJup, residing in a prograde 4.79-day orbit. HAT-P-70b has a radius of 1.87 +0.15/-0.10 RJup and a mass constraint of < 6.78 (3 sigma) MJup, and resides in a retrograde 2.74-day orbit. We use the confirmation of these planets around relatively massive stars as an opportunity to explore the occurrence rate of hot Jupiters as a function of stellar mass. We define a sample of 47,126 main-sequence stars brighter than Tmag=10 that yields 31 giant planet candidates, including 18 confirmed planets, 3 candidates, and 10 false positives. We find a net hot Jupiter occurrence rate of 0.41+/-0.10 % within this sample, consistent with the rate measured by Kepler for FGK stars. When divided into stellar mass bins, we find the occurrence rate to be 0.71+/-0.31% for G stars, 0.43+/-0.15% for F stars, and 0.26+/-0.11% for A stars. Thus, at this point, we cannot discern any statistically significant trend in the occurrence of hot Jupiters with stellar mass., Comment: Accepted for publication by AJ

Gravitational wave emission can lead to the coalescence of close pairs of compact objects orbiting each other. For the case of neutron stars such mergers may yield masses above the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff limit, leading to the formation of black holes. For the case of white dwarfs the merger product may exceed the Chandrasekhar limit, leading either to a thermonuclear explosion as Type Ia supernova, or to a collapse forming a neutron star. If a Type Ia supernova explosion is avoided, the merger of two massive white dwarfs is expected to form a hydrogen- and helium-free circumstellar nebula with a hot and luminous, rapidly rotating and highly magnetized central star for several 10,000 yr before its final collapse. Here we report the discovery of a hot star with an emission line dominated spectrum in the centre of a circular mid-infrared nebula. Both the star and the nebula appear to be free of hydrogen and helium. Our tailored stellar atmosphere and wind models indicate a stellar surface temperature of about 200,000 K, and a record outflow velocity of 16,000 km/s. This extreme velocity, together with the derived mass outflow rate, imply rapid stellar rotation and a strong magnetic field aiding the wind acceleration. The Gaia distance of the star leads to a luminosity of 10^{4.5} Lsun, which matches models of the post-merger evolution of super-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs. The high stellar temperature and the nebular size argue for a short remaining lifetime of the star, which will produce a bright optical and high-energy transient upon collapse. We report the discovery of a circular shell centred on the Be X-ray binary (BeXB) SXP 1323 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The shell was detected in an Halpha image obtained with the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Follow-up spectroscopy with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) showed that the shell expands with a velocity of $\approx$ 100 km/s and that its emission is due to shock excitation. We suggest that this shell is the remnant of the supernova explosion that led to the formation of the SXP 1323's neutron star $\approx$ 40 000 yr ago. SXP 1323 represents the second known case of a BeXB associated with a supernova remnant (the first one is SXP 1062). We report the discovery of a new eclipsing polar, MASTER OT J061451.70-272535.5, detected as an optical transient by MASTER auto-detection software at the recently commissioned MASTER-SAAO telescope. Time resolved (10-20 s) photometry with the SAAO 1.9-m, and 1.0-m telescopes, utilizing the SHOC EM-CCD cameras, revealed that the source eclipses, with a period of 2.08 hours (7482.9$\pm$3.5$\,$s). The eclipse light curve has a peculiar morphology, comprising an initial dip, where the source brightness drops to ${\sim}$50% of the pre-eclipse level before gradually increasing again in brightness. A second rapid ingress follows, where the brightness drops by ${\sim}$60-80%, followed by a more gradual decrease to zero flux. We interpret the eclipse profile as the result of an initial obscuration of the accretion hot-spot on the magnetic white dwarf by the accretion stream, followed by an eclipse of both the hot-spot and the partially illuminated stream by the red dwarf donor star. This is similar to what has been observed in other eclipsing polars such as HU Aqr, but here the stream absorption is more pronounced. The object was subsequently observed with South African Large Telescope (SALT) using the Robert Stobie Spectrograph (RSS). This revealed a spectrum with all of the Balmer lines in emission, a strong HeII 4686\AA{} line with a peak flux greater than that of H$\beta$, as well as weaker HeI lines. The spectral features, along with the structure of the light curve, suggest that MASTER OT J061451.70-272535.5 is a new magnetic cataclysmic variable, most likely of the synchronised Polar subclass., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the discovery of two mid-infrared nebulae in the northern hemisphere with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and the results of optical spectroscopy of their central stars, BD+60 2668 (composed of two components, separated from each other by \approx 3 arcsec) and ALS 19653, with the Calar Alto 3.5-m telescope and the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), respectively. We classify the components of BD+60 2668 as stars of spectral types B0.5 II and B1.5 III. ALS 19653 is indicated in the SIMBAD data base as a planetary nebula, while our observations show that it is a massive B0.5 Ib star, possibly in a binary system. Using the stellar atmosphere code FASTWIND, we derived fundamental parameters of the three stars as well as their surface element abundances, implying that all of them are either on the main sequence or only recently left it. This provides further evidence that massive stars can produce circumstellar nebulae while they are still relatively unevolved. We also report the detection of optical counterparts to the mid-infrared nebulae and a second, more extended optical nebula around ALS 19653, and present the results of SALT spectroscopy of both nebulae associated with this star. We report the results of our study of the high-velocity (\approx160 km/s) runaway O star CPD-64 2731 and its associated horseshoe-shaped nebula discovered with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. Spectroscopic observations with the Southern African Large Telescope and spectral analysis indicate that CPD-64 2731 is a fast-rotating main-sequence O5.5 star with enhanced surface nitrogen abundance. We derive a projected rotational velocity of \approx300 km/s which is extremely high for this spectral type. Its kinematic age of \approx6 Myr, assuming it was born near the Galactic plane, exceeds its age derived from single star models by a factor of two. These properties suggest that CPD-64 2731 is a rejuvenated and spun-up binary product. The geometry of the nebula and the almost central location of the star within it argue against a pure bow shock interpretation for the nebula. Instead, we suggest that the binary interaction happened recently, thereby creating the nebula, with a cavity blown by the current fast stellar wind. We present a sample of 66 galaxies belonging to the equatorial part (Dec.= -7$^o$, +7$^o$) of the large so called Eridanus void (after Fairall 1998). The void galaxies are selected as to be separated from the luminous galaxies ($M_{\rm B} < M_{\rm B}^{*} +1$), delineating the void, by more than 2 Mpc. Our main goal is to study systematically the evolutionary parameters of the void sample (metallicity and gas content) and to compare the void galaxy properties with their counterparts residing in denser environments. Besides the general galaxy parameters, compiled mainly from the literature, we present the results of dedicated observations to measure the oxygen abundance O/H in HII-regions of 23 void galaxies obtained with the 11-m SALT telescope (SAAO) and the 6-m BTA telescope (SAO), as well as the O/H estimates derived from the analysis of the SDSS DR12 spectra for 3 objects. We compiled all available data on O/H in 36 these void galaxies, including those for 11 galaxies available in the literature (for one object both SDSS and SALT spectra were used), and analyze this data in relation to galaxy luminosity ($\log$(O/H) versus $M_{\rm B}$). Comparing them with the control sample of similar type galaxies from the Local Volume, we find clear evidence for a substantially lower average metallicity of the Eridanus void galaxies. We present a study of the high-resolution optical spectrum for the hot post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) star, Hen 3-1013, identified as the optical counterpart of the infrared sourceIRAS 14331-6435. For the first time the detailed identifications of the observed absorption and emission features in the wavelength range 3700-9000 \AA\ is carried out. Absorption lines of HI, HeI, CI, NI, OI, NeI, CII, NII, OII, SiII, SII, ArII, FeII, MnII, CrII, TiII, CoII, NiII, SIII, FeIII and SIV were detected. From the absorption lines, we derived heliocentric radial velocities of $V_r=-29.6\pm0.4$ km/s. We have identified emission permitted lines of OI, NI, FeII, MgII, SiII and AlII. The forbidden lines of [NI], [FeII], [CrII] and [NiII] have been identified also. Analysis of [NiII] lines in the gaseous shell gives an estimate for the electron density $N_e\sim10^7$ cm$^{-3}$ and the expansion velocity of the nebula $V_{exp}=12$ km/s. The mean radial velocity as measured from emission features of the envelope is $V_r=-36.0\pm0.4$ km/s. The Balmer lines H$\alpha$, H$\beta$ and H$\gamma$ show P Cyg behaviour which indicate ongoing post-AGB mass-loss. Based on ASAS and ASAS-SN data, we have detected rapid photometric variability in Hen 3-1013 with an amplitude up to 0.2 mag in the V band. The star's low-resolution spectrum underwent no significant changes from 1994 to 2012. Based on archival data, we have traced the photometric history of the star over more than 100 years. We report the discovery of filamentary structures stretched behind the bow-shock-producing high-mass X-ray binary Vela X-1 using the SuperCOSMOS H-alpha Survey and present the results of optical spectroscopy of the bow shock carried out with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). The geometry of the detected structures suggests that Vela X-1 has encountered a wedge-like layer of enhanced density on its way and that the shocked material of the layer partially outlines a wake downstream of Vela X-1. To substantiate this suggestion, we carried out 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations of interaction between Vela X-1 and the layer for three limiting cases. Namely, we run simulations in which (i) the stellar wind and the interstellar medium (ISM) were treated as pure hydrodynamic flows, (ii) a homogeneous magnetic field was added to the ISM, while the stellar wind was assumed to be unmagnetized, and (iii) the stellar wind was assumed to possess a helical magnetic field, while there was no magnetic field in the ISM. We found that although the first two simulations can provide a rough agreement with the observations, only the third one allowed us to reproduce not only the wake behind Vela X-1, but also the general geometry of the bow shock ahead of it., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures 7, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the results of optical spectroscopy of the blue supergiant Sk-69 279 and its circular shell in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). We classify Sk-69 279 as an O9.2 Iaf star and analyse its spectrum by using the stellar atmosphere code CMFGEN, obtaining a stellar temperature of \approx 30 kK, a luminosity of log(L_*/Lsun)=5.54, a mass-loss rate of log(\dot{M}/(Msun/yr))=-5.26, and a wind velocity of 800 km/s. We found also that Sk-69 279 possesses an extended atmosphere with an effective temperature of \approx 24 kK and that its surface helium and nitrogen abundances are enhanced, respectively, by factors of \approx 2 and 20--30. This suggests that either Sk-69 279 was initially a (single) fast-rotating (\ga 400 km/s) star, which only recently evolved off the main sequence, or that it is a product of close binary evolution. The long-slit spectroscopy of the shell around Sk-69 279 revealed that its nitrogen abundance is enhanced by the same factor as the stellar atmosphere, which implies that the shell is composed mostly of the CNO processed material lost by the star. Our findings support previous propositions that some massive stars can produce compact circumstellar shells and, presumably, appear as luminous blue variables while they are still on the main sequence or have only recently left it., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the analysis of medium-resolution spectra obtained at the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) for nuclear globular clusters (GCs) in two dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs). The galaxies have similar star formation histories, but they are situated in completely different environments. ESO269-66 is a close neighbour of the giant S0 NGC5128. KKs3 is one of the few truly isolated dSphs within 10 Mpc. We estimate the helium abundance $Y=0.3$, $\rm age=12.6\pm1$ Gyr, $[Fe/H]=-1.5,-1.55\pm0.2$ dex, and abundances of C, N, Mg, Ca, Ti, and Cr for the nuclei of ESO269-66 and KKs3. Our surface photometry results using HST images yield the half-light radius of the cluster in KKs3, $\rm r_h=4.8\pm0.2$ pc. We demonstrate the similarities of medium-resolution spectra, ages, chemical compositions, and structure for GCs in ESO269-66 and KKs3 and for several massive Galactic GCs with $[Fe/H]\sim-1.6$ dex. All Galactic GCs posses Extended Blue Horizontal Branches and multiple stellar populations. Five of the selected Galactic objects are iron-complex GCs. Our results indicate that the sample GCs observed now in different environments had similar conditions of their formation $\sim$1 Gyr after the Big Bang., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 10 tables. According to theoretical considerations, multiplicity of hierarchical stellar systems can reach, depending on masses and orbital parameters, several hundred, while observational data confirm existence of at most septuple (seven-component) systems. In this study, we cross-match very high multiplicity (six and more components) stellar systems in modern catalogues of visual double and multiple stars, to find candidates to hierarchical systems among them. After cross-matching with catalogues of closer binaries (eclipsing, spectroscopic, etc.), some of their components were found to be binary/multiple themselves, which increases the system's degree of multiplicity. Optical pairs, known from literature or filtered by the authors, are flagged and excluded from the statistics. We have compiled a list of potentially very high multiplicity hierarchical systems that contains 10~objects. Their multiplicity does not exceed 12, and we discuss a number of ways to explain the lack of extremely high multiplicity systems., Comment: 7 pages, 3 tables, 3 figures

We report the results of spectroscopic observations and numerical modelling of the H II region IRAS 18153-1651. Our study was motivated by the discovery of an optical arc and two main-sequence stars of spectral type B1 and B3 near the centre of IRAS 18153-1651. We interpret the arc as the edge of the wind bubble (blown by the B1 star), whose brightness is enhanced by the interaction with a photoevaporation flow from a nearby molecular cloud. This interpretation implies that we deal with a unique case of a young massive star (the most massive member of a recently formed low-mass star cluster) caught just tens of thousands of years after its stellar wind has begun to blow a bubble into the surrounding dense medium. Our two-dimensional, radiation-hydrodynamics simulations of the wind bubble and the H II region around the B1 star provide a reasonable match to observations, both in terms of morphology and absolute brightness of the optical and mid-infrared emission, and verify the young age of IRAS 18153-1651. Long-slit spectroscopy with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) of central stars of mid-infrared nebulae detected with the Spitzer Space Telescope and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) led to the discovery of numerous candidate luminous blue variables (cLBVs) and other rare evolved massive stars. With the recent advent of the SALT fibre-fed high-resolution echelle spectrograph (HRS), a new perspective for the study of these interesting objects is appeared. Using the HRS we obtained spectra of a dozen newly identified massive stars. Searches for compact mid-IR nebulae with the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), accompanied by spectroscopic observations of central stars of these nebulae led to the discovery of many dozens of massive stars at different evolutionary stages, of which the most numerous are candidate luminous blue variables (LBVs). The census of the Solar neighbourhood is still incomplete, as demonstrated by recent discoveries of many objects within 5-10 pc from the Sun. The area around the mid-plane and bulge of the Milky Way presents the most difficulties in searches for such nearby objects, and is therefore deficient in the known population. This is largely due to high stellar densities encountered. Spectroscopic, photometric and kinematic characterization of these objects allows better understand the local mass function, the binary fraction, and provides new interesting targets for more detailed studies. We report the spectroscopic follow-up and characterisation of 12 bright high PM objects, identified from the VISTA Variables in Via Lactea survey (VVV). We used the 1.9-m telescope of the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) for low-resolution optical spectroscopy and spectral classification, and the MPG/ESP 2.2m telescope Fiber-fed Extended Range Optical Spectrograph (FEROS) high-resolution optical spectroscopy to obtain the radial and space velocities for three of them. Six of our objects have co-moving companions. We derived optical spectral types and photometric distances, and classified all of them as K and M dwarfs within 27-264 pc of the Sun. Finally, we found that one of the sources, VVV J141421.23-602326.1 (a co-moving companion of VVV J141420.55-602337.1), appears to be a rare massive white dwarf that maybe close to the ZZ Ceti instability strip. In this paper, we report the results of spectroscopic and photometric observations of the candidate evolved massive star MN48 disclosed via detection of a mid-infrared circular shell around it with the Spitzer Space Telescope. Follow-up optical spectroscopy of MN48 with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) carried out in 2011--2015 revealed significant changes in the spectrum of this star, which are typical of luminous blue variables (LBVs). The LBV status of MN48 was further supported by photometric monitoring which shows that in 2009--2011 this star has brightened by approx 0.9 and 1 mag in the V and I_c bands, respectively, then faded by approx 1.1 and 1.6 mag during the next four years, and apparently started to brighten again recently. The detected changes in the spectrum and brightness of MN48 make this star the 18th known Galactic bona fide LBV and increase the percentage of LBVs associated with circumstellar nebulae to more than 70 per cent. We discuss the possible birth place of MN48 and suggest that this star might have been ejected either from a putative star cluster embedded in the HII region IRAS 16455-4531 or the young massive star cluster Westerlund 1., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the correlation between the [O III]$\lambda 5007$ and X-ray luminosities of local Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), using a complete, hard X-ray ($>10$ keV) selected sample in the Swift/BAT 9-month catalog. From our optical spectroscopic observations at the South African Astronomical Observatory and the literature, a catalog of [O III]$\lambda 5007$ line flux for all 103 AGNs at Galactic latitudes of $|b|>15^\circ$ is complied. Significant correlations with intrinsic X-ray luminosity ($L_{\rm X}$) are found both for observed ($L_{\rm [O~III]}$) and extinction-corrected ($L_{\rm [O~III]}^{\rm cor}$) luminosities, separately for X-ray unabsorbed and absorbed AGNs. We obtain the regression form of $L_{\rm [O~III]}$ $\propto L_{\rm 2-10\; keV}^{1.18\pm0.07}$ and $L_{\rm [O~III]}^{\rm cor}$ $\propto L_{\rm 2-10\; keV}^{1.16\pm0.09}$ from the whole sample. The absorbed AGNs with low ($<$0.5\%) scattering fractions in soft X-rays show on average smaller $L_{\rm [O~III]}/L_{\rm X}$ and $L_{\rm [O~III]}^{\rm cor}/L_{\rm X}$ ratios than the other absorbed AGNs, while those in edge-on host galaxies do not. These results suggest that a significant fraction of this population are buried in tori with small opening angles. By using these $L_{\rm [O~III]}$ vs. $L_{\rm X}$ correlations, the X-ray luminosity function of local AGNs (including Compton thick AGNs) in a standard population synthesis model gives much better agreement with the [O III]$\lambda 5007$ luminosity function derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey than previously reported. This confirms that hard X-ray observations are a very powerful tool to find AGNs with high completeness., Comment: 14 pages including 11 figures and 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ. We report the results of optical spectroscopy of the candidate evolved massive star MN44 revealed via detection of a circular shell with the Spitzer Space Telescope. First spectra taken in 2009 May--June showed the Balmer lines in emission as well as numerous emission lines of iron, which is typical of luminous blue variables (LBVs) near the visual maximum. New observations carried out in 2015 May--September detected significant changes in the spectrum, indicating that the star became hotter. We found that these changes are accompanied by significant brightness variability of MN44. In particular, the I_c-band brightness decreased by \approx 1.6 mag during the last six years and after reaching its minimum in 2015 June has started to increase. Using archival data, we also found that the I_c-band brightness increased by \approx 3 mag in \approx 30 yr preceding our observations. MN44 therefore represents the seventeenth known example of the Galactic bona fide LBVs. We detected a nitrogen-rich knot to the northwest of the star, which might represent an interstellar cloudlet interacting with the circumstellar shell. We discuss a possible association between MN44 and the INTEGRAL transient source of hard X-ray emission IGR J16327-4940, implying that MN44 might be either a colliding-wind binary or a high-mass X-ray binary., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the results of spectrophotometric observations of the massive star MN18 revealed via discovery of a bipolar nebula around it with the Spitzer Space Telescope. Using the optical spectrum obtained with the Southern African Large Telescope, we classify this star as B1 Ia. The evolved status of MN18 is supported by the detection of nitrogen overabundance in the nebula, which implies that it is composed of processed material ejected by the star. We analysed the spectrum of MN18 by using the code CMFGEN, obtaining a stellar effective temperature of \approx 21 kK. The star is highly reddened, E(B-V)\approx 2 mag. Adopting an absolute visual magnitude of M_V=-6.8\pm0.5 (typical of B1 supergiants), MN18 has a luminosity of log L/Lsun \approx 5.42\pm0.30, a mass-loss rate of \approx (2.8-4.5)\times10^{-7} Msun/yr, and resides at a distance of \approx 5.6^{+1.5} _{-1.2} kpc. We discuss the origin of the nebula around MN18 and compare it with similar nebulae produced by other blue supergiants in the Galaxy (Sher 25, HD 168625, [SBW2007] 1) and the Large Magellanic Cloud (Sk-69 202). The nitrogen abundances in these nebulae imply that blue supergiants can produce them from the main sequence stage up to the pre-supernova stage. We also present a K-band spectrum of the candidate luminous blue variable MN56 (encircled by a ring-like nebula) and report the discovery of an OB star at \approx 17 arcsec from MN18. Spectra of 34 H II regions in the late-type galaxies NGC1087, NGC2967, NGC3023, NGC4030, NGC4123, and NGC4517A were observed with the South African Large Telescope (SALT). In all 34 H II regions, oxygen abundances were determined through the "counterpart" method (C method). Additionally, in two H II regions in which the auroral lines were detected oxygen abundances were measured through the classic Te method. We also estimated the abundances in our H II regions using the O3N2 and N2 calibrations and compared those with the C-based abundances. With these data we examined the radial abundance distributions in the disks of our target galaxies. We derived surface-brightness profiles and other characteristics of the disks (the surface brightness at the disk center and the disk scale length) in three photometric bands for each galaxy using publicly available photometric imaging data. The radial distributions of the oxygen abundances predicted by the relation between abundance and disk surface brightness in the W1 band obtained for spiral galaxies in our previous study are close to the radial distributions of the oxygen abundances determined from the analysis of the emission line spectra for four galaxies where this relation is applicable. Hence, when the surface-brightness profile of a late-type galaxy is known, this parametric relation can be used to estimate the likely present-day oxygen abundance in its disk., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures; Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Low luminosity galaxies may be the building blocks of more luminous systems. Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) observations of the low luminosity, early-type galaxy NGC59 are obtained and analysed. These data are used to measure the stellar population parameters in the centre and off-centre regions of this galaxy, in order to uncover its likely star formation history. We find evidence of older stars, in addition to young stars in the emission line regions. The metallicity of the stellar population is constrained to be [Z/H] ~ -1.1 to -1.6, which is extremely low, even for this low luminosity galaxy, since it is not classed as a dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The measured [alpha/Fe] ratio is sub-solar, which indicates an extended star formation history in NGC59. If such objects formed the building blocks of more massive, early-type galaxies, then they must have been gaseous mergers, rather than dry mergers, in order to increase the metals to observed levels in luminous, early-type galaxies., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this Letter, we report the results of spectroscopic and photometric monitoring of the candidate luminous blue variable (LBV) WS1, which was discovered in 2011 through the detection of a mid-infrared circular shell and follow-up optical spectroscopy of its central star. Our monitoring showed that WS1 brightened in the B, V and I bands by more than 1 mag during the last three years, while its spectrum revealed dramatic changes during the same time period, indicating that the star became much cooler. The light curve of WS1 demonstrates that the brightness of this star has reached maximum in 2013 December and then starts to decline. These findings unambiguously proved the LBV nature of WS1 and added one more member to the class of Galactic bona fide LBVs, bringing their number to sixteen (an updated census of these objects is provided)., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

Passing stars can perturb the Oort Cloud, triggering comet showers and potentially extinction events on Earth. We combine velocity measurements for the recently discovered, nearby, low-mass binary system WISE J072003.20-084651.2 ("Scholz's star") to calculate its past trajectory. Integrating the Galactic orbits of this $\sim$0.15 M$_{\odot}$ binary system and the Sun, we find that the binary passed within only 52$^{+23}_{-14}$ kAU (0.25$^{+0.11}_{-0.07}$ parsec) of the Sun 70$^{+15}_{-10}$ kya (1$\sigma$ uncertainties), i.e. within the outer Oort Cloud. This is the closest known encounter of a star to our solar system with a well-constrained distance and velocity. Previous work suggests that flybys within 0.25 pc occur infrequently ($\sim$0.1 Myr$^{-1}$). We show that given the low mass and high velocity of the binary system, the encounter was dynamically weak. Using the best available astrometry, our simulations suggest that the probability that the star penetrated the outer Oort Cloud is $\sim$98%, but the probability of penetrating the dynamically active inner Oort Cloud ($<$20 kAU) is $\sim$10$^{-4}$. While the flyby of this system likely caused negligible impact on the flux of long-period comets, the recent discovery of this binary highlights that dynamically important Oort Cloud perturbers may be lurking among nearby stars., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

The severe crowding towards the Galactic plane suggests that the census of nearby stars in that direction may be incomplete. Recently, Scholz reported a new M9 object at an estimated distance d~7 pc (WISE J072003.20-084651.2; hereafter WISE0720) at Galactic latitude b=2.3 degr. Our goals are to determine the physical characteristics of WISE0720, its kinematic properties, and to address the question if it is a binary object, as suggested in the discovery paper. Optical and infrared spectroscopy from the Southern African Large Telescope and Magellan, respectively, and spectral energy distribution fitting were used to determine the spectral type of WISE0720. The measured radial velocity, proper motion and parallax yielded its Galactic velocities. We also investigated if WISE0720 may show X-ray activity based on archival data. Our spectra are consistent with spectral type L0+/-1. We find no evidence for binarity, apart for a minor 2-sigma level difference in the radial velocities taken at two different epochs. The spatial velocity of WISE0720 does not connect it to any known moving group, instead it places the object with high probability in the old thin disk or in the thick disk. The spectral energy distribution fit hints at excess in the 12 and 22 micron WISE bands which may be due to a redder companion, but the same excess is visible in other late type objects, and it more likely implies a shortcoming of the models (e.g., issues with the effective wavelengths of the filters for these extremely cool objects, etc.) rather than a disk or redder companion. The optical spectrum shows some Halpha emission, indicative of stellar activity. Archival X-ray observations yield no detection., Comment: A&A, accepted; 9 pages, 6 figures

The relations between oxygen abundance and disk surface brightness (OH-SB relation) in the infrared W1 band are examined for a nearby late-type galaxies. The oxygen abundances were presented in Paper I. The photometric characteristics of the disks are inferred here using photometric maps from the literature through bulge-disk decomposition. We find evidence that the OH - SB relation is not unique but depends on the galactocentric distance r (taken as a fraction of the optical radius R_25) and on the properties of a galaxy: the disk scale length h and the morphological T-type. The parametric OH - SB relation reproduces the observed data better than a simple, one-parameter relation; the deviations resulting when using our parametric relation are smaller by a factor of ~1.4 than that the simple relation. The influence of the parameters on the OH - SB relation varies with galactocentric distance. The influence of the T-type on the OH - SB relation is negligible at the centers of galaxies and increases with galactocentric distance. In contrast, the influence of the disk scale length on the OH -- SB relation is maximum at the centers of galaxies and decreases with galactocentric distance, disappearing at the optical edges of galaxies. Two-dimensional relations can be used to reproduce the observed data at the optical edges of the disks and at the centers of the disks. The disk scale length should be used as a second parameter in the OH - SB relation at the center of the disk while the morphological T-type should be used as a second parameter in the relation at optical edge of the disk. We report the discovery of a circular mid-infrared shell around the emission-line star Wray 16-137 using archival data of the Spitzer Space Telescope. Follow-up optical spectroscopy of Wray 16-137 with the Southern African Large Telescope revealed a rich emission spectrum typical of the classical luminous blue variables (LBVs) like P Cygni. Subsequent spectroscopic and photometric observations showed drastic changes in the spectrum and brightness during the last three years, meaning that Wray 16-137 currently undergoes an S Dor-like outburst. Namely, we found that the star has brightened by \approx 1 mag in the V and I_c bands, while its spectrum became dominated by Fe ii lines. Here we present observations with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope of the nearby, transition-type dwarf galaxy KK258 = ESO468-020. We measure a distance of 2.23$\pm$0.05 Mpc using the Tip of Red Giant Branch method. We also detect H$\alpha$ emission from this gas-poor dwarf transition galaxy at the velocity $V_h$ = 92$\pm$5 km s$^{-1}$ or $V_{LG}$ = 150 km s$^{-1}$. With this distance and velocity, KK258 lies near the local Hubble flow locus with a peculiar velocity $\sim$3 km s$^{-1}$. We discuss the star formation history of KK258 derived from its colour-magnitude diagram. The specific star formation rate is estimated to be log[sSFR] = $-2.64$ and $-2.84$ (Gyr$^{-1}$) from the FUV-flux and H$\alpha$-flux, respectively. KK258 has the absolute magnitude $M_B = -10.3$ mag, the average surface brightness of 26.0 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ and the hydrogen mass ${\rm log}(M_{HI}) < 5.75 M_\odot$. We compare KK258 with 29 other dTr- galaxies situated within 5 Mpc from us, and conclude that its properties are typical for transition dwarfs. However, KK258 resides 0.8 Mpc away from its significant neighbour, the Sdm galaxy NGC 55, and such a spatial isolation is unusual for the local transition dwarfs., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We report the first-ever discovery of a Wolf-Rayet (WR) star in the Large Magellanic Cloud via detection of a circular shell with the Spitzer Space Telescope. Follow-up observations with Gemini-South resolved the central star of the shell into two components separated from each other by approx 2 arcsec (or approx 0.5 pc in projection). One of these components turns out to be a WN3 star with H and He lines both in emission and absorption (we named it BAT99 3a using the numbering system based on extending the Breysacher et al. catalogue). Spectroscopy of the second component showed that it is a B0 V star. Subsequent spectroscopic observations of BAT99 3a with the du Pont 2.5-m telescope and the Southern African Large Telescope revealed that it is a close, eccentric binary system, and that the absorption lines are associated with an O companion star. We analyzed the spectrum of the binary system using the non-LTE Potsdam Wolf-Rayet (PoWR) code, confirming that the WR component is a very hot (approx 90 kK) WN star. For this star, we derived a luminosity of log L/Lsun =5.45 and a mass-loss rate of 10^{-5.8} Msun/yr, and found that the stellar wind composition is dominated by helium with 20 per cent of hydrogen. Spectroscopy of the shell revealed an He iii region centred on BAT99 3a and having the same angular radius (approx 15 arcsec) as the shell. We thereby add a new example to a rare class of high-excitation nebulae photoionized by WR stars. Analysis of the nebular spectrum showed that the shell is composed of unprocessed material, implying that the shell was swept-up from the local interstellar medium. We investigate the oxygen and nitrogen abundance distributions across the optical disks of 130 nearby late-type galaxies using around 3740 published spectra of HII regions. We use these data in order to provide homogeneous abundance determinations for all objects in the sample, including HII regions in which not all of the usual diagnostic lines were measured. Examining the relation between N and O abundances in these galaxies we find that the abundances in their centres and at their isophotal R_25 disk radii follow the same relation. The variation in N/H at a given O/H is around 0.3 dex. We suggest that the observed spread in N/H may be partly caused by the time delay between N and O enrichment and the different star formation histories in galaxies of different morphological types and dimensions. Recent observations reveal that the central star of the planetary nebula Abell 48 exhibits spectral features similar to massive nitrogen-sequence Wolf-Rayet stars. This raises a pertinent question, whether it is still a planetary nebula or rather a ring nebula of a massive star. In this study, we have constructed a three-dimensional photoionization model of Abell 48, constrained by our new optical integral field spectroscopy. An analysis of the spatially resolved velocity distributions allowed us to constrain the geometry of Abell 48. We used the collisionally excited lines to obtain the nebular physical conditions and ionic abundances of nitrogen, oxygen, neon, sulphur and argon, relative to hydrogen. We also determined helium temperatures and ionic abundances of helium and carbon from the optical recombination lines. We obtained a good fit to the observations for most of the emission-line fluxes in our photoionization model. The ionic abundances deduced from our model are in decent agreement with those derived by the empirical analysis. However, we notice obvious discrepancies between helium temperatures derived from the model and the empirical analysis, as overestimated by our model. This could be due to the presence of a small fraction of cold metal-rich structures, which were not included in our model. It is found that the observed nebular line fluxes were best reproduced by using a hydrogen-deficient expanding model atmosphere as the ionizing source with an effective temperature of 70 kK and a stellar luminosity of 5500 L_sun, which corresponds to a relatively low-mass progenitor star (~ 3 M_sun) rather than a massive Pop I star., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 12 tables, accepted by MNRAS

We have developed a method to identify planetary nebula (PN) candidates in imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). This method exploits the SDSS' five-band sampling of emission lines in PN spectra, which results in a color signature distinct from that of other sources. Selection criteria based on this signature can be applied to nearby galaxies in which PNe appear as point sources. We applied these criteria to the whole area of M31 as scanned by the SDSS, selecting 167 PN candidates that are located in the outer regions of M31. The spectra of 80 selected candidates were then observed with the 2.2m telescope at Calar Alto Observatory. These observations and cross-checks with literature data show that our method has a selection rate efficiency of about 90%, but the efficiency is different for the different groups of PNe candidates. In the outer regions of M31, PNe trace different well-known morphological features like the Northern Spur, the NGC205 Loop, the G1 Clump, etc. In general, the distribution of PNe in the outer region 8

Most runaway OB stars, like the majority of massive stars residing in their parent clusters, go through the red supergiant (RSG) phase during their lifetimes. Nonetheless, although many dozens of massive runaways were found to be associated with bow shocks, only two RSG bow-shock-producing stars, Betelgeuse and \mu Cep, are known to date. In this paper, we report the discovery of an arc-like nebula around the late M-type star IRC-10414 using the SuperCOSMOS H-alpha Survey. Our spectroscopic follow-up of IRC-10414 with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) showed that it is a M7 supergiant, which supports previous claims on the RSG nature of this star based on observations of its maser emission. This was reinforced by our new radio- and (sub)millimeter-wavelength molecular line observations made with the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) 12 meter telescope and the Effelsberg 100 m radio telescope, respectively. The SALT spectrum of the nebula indicates that its emission is the result of shock excitation. This finding along with the arc-like shape of the nebula and an estimate of the space velocity of IRC-10414 (\approx 70\pm20 km/s) imply the bow shock interpretation for the nebula. Thus, IRC-10414 represents the third case of a bow-shock-producing RSG and the first one with a bow shock visible at optical wavelengths. We discuss the smooth appearance of the bow shocks around IRC-10414 and Betelgeuse and propose that one of the necessary conditions for stability of bow shocks generated by RSGs is the ionization of the stellar wind. We use UCAC4 proper motions and WISE W1-band apparent magnitudes intensity-mean for almost 400 field RR Lyrae variables to determine the parameters of the velocity distribution of Galactic RR Lyrae population and constrain the zero points of the metallicity- relation and those of the period-metallicity--band and period-metallicity--band luminosity relations via statistical parallax. We find the mean velocities of the halo- and thick-disc RR Lyrae populations in the solar neighbourhood to be (U0(Halo), V0(Halo), W0(Halo)) = (-7 +/- 9, -214 +/- 10, -10 +/- 6) km/s and (U0(Disc), V0(Disc), W0(Disc)) =(-13 +/- 7, -37 +/- 6, -17 +/- 4) km/s, respectively, and the corresponding components of the velocity-dispersion ellipsoids, (sigma VR(Halo), sigma Vphi(Halo), sigma Vtheta(Halo)) = (153 +/- 9, 101 +/- 6, 96 +/- 5) km/s and (sigma VR(Disc), sigma Vphi(Disc), sigma Vtheta(Disc)) = (46 +/- 7, 37 +/- 5, 27 +/- 4) km/s, respectively. The fraction of thick-disc stars is estimated at 0.22 +/- 0.03. The corrected IR period-metallicity-luminosity relations are = -0.769 +0.088 [Fe/H]- 2.33 mathoprm log PF and = -0.825 + 0.088 [Fe/H] -2.33 mathoprm log PF, and the optical metallicity-luminosity relation, [Fe/H]-, is = +1.094 + 0.232 [Fe/H], with a standard error of +/- 0.089, implying an LMC distance modulus of 18.32 +/- 0.09, a solar Galactocentric distance of 7.73 +/- 0.36 kpc, and the M31 and M33 distance moduli of DM(M31) = 24.24 +/- 0.09 (D = 705 +/- 30 kpc) and DM(M33) = 24.36 +/- 0.09 (D = 745 +/- 31 kpc), respectively. Extragalactic distances calibrated with our RR Lyrae star luminosity scale imply a Hubble constant of ~80 km/s/Mpc. Our results suggest marginal prograde rotation for the population of halo RR Lyraes in the Milky Way., Comment: 17 pages, 5 tables, 11 figures.
