The relation of leg preference and muscular strength in elite fencers was examined. The dominant and nondominant extensor and flexor muscles of 30 elite fencers (M age = 18.2 yr., SD = 2.0 yr.; M height = 173 cm, SD = 7.4 cm; M weight-62.7 kg, SD = 8.9 kg), who were members of the Greek national team, and 14 healthy, young, sedentary adults (8 men, 6 women; M age 23.4 yr., SD = 1.9; M height = 169 cm, SD = 10.5 cm; M weight = 66.3 kg, SD = 9.9) were tested for concentric isokinetic contraction at slow (30 to 60[degrees]/sec.) and fast (240[degrees]/sec.) angular velocities. Significant multivariate differences were found between groups for knee extension, angle of knee extension, knee flexion, and flexor/extensor peak torque ratio. In contrast, no significant difference was found between the dominant and nondominant legs. There was no significant difference in the flexor/extensor peak torque ratio among any of the concentric angular velocities tested. These findings suggest that long-term training in fencing influences the strength characteristics of the lower limbs.

This study compares the effects of rest intervals on isokinetic muscle torque recovery between sets of a knee extensor and flexor exercise protocol in physically active younger and older women. Twenty young (22.4 [+ or -] 1.7 years) and 16 older (70.7 [+ or -] 4.3 years) women performed three sets of eight maximum repetitions of knee extension/flexion at 60[degrees] x [s.sup.-1]. The rest interval between sets was 15, 30, and 60 seconds and was randomly assigned across three testing days. No significant interaction of rest by set by age group was observed. There was a significant decline in mean knee extensor torque when 15- and 30-second rest intervals were used between sets, but not when a 60-second rest interval was applied for both the young and the old women. No significant decline for mean knee flexor torque was observed in the older women when a 30-second rest interval was used, whereas a longer 60-second rest interval was required in younger women. Active younger and older women require similar rest intervals between sets of a knee extensor exercise (60 seconds) for complete recovery. However, older women recovered faster (30 seconds) than younger women (60 seconds) between sets of a knee flexor exercise. The exercise-to-rest ratio for knee extensors was similar for young and old women (1:2). Old women required only a 1:1 exercise-to-rest ratio for knee flexor recovery, whereas younger women required a longer 1:2 exercise-to-rest ratio. The results of the present study are specific to isokinetic testing and training and are more applicable in rehabilitation and research settings. This study comprised 2 main experiments: one was to determine the oxidative DNA damage under hyperbaric hyperoxia (HBO), and the other was to evaluate the effects of pre-exposure to HBO on high-intensity exercise performance. Healthy subjects (n = 8) inspired 100% [O.sub.2] in an experimental chamber at a pressure of 1.3 atmospheres absolute (ATA) for 50 minutes once per week for 2 weeks. Urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) was measured as a marker of DNA oxidative damage on day 0 and on days 1, 3, and 5 after each HBO exposure. To investigate the effects of pre-exposure to HBO on high-intensity exercise performance, subjects (n = 6) performed maximal isometric knee extensor exercise (30 repetitions x 2 sets) with and without HBO pre-exposure (100% [O.sub.2] at 1.3 ATA for 50 minutes). Urinary 8-OHdG did not show any significant change after HBO exposure. Isometric knee extensor torque was significantly lower during the first half of the first set of exercises after HBO pre-exposure compared with the normobaric normoxia (NBO) trial. The decreased torque was associated with the lower integrated etectromyography with respect to time. Changes in the degree of ischemiareperfusion in the vastus lateralis muscle during exercise were larger in the HBO pre-exposure trial than in the NBO trial. Muscle fatigue index, serum lactate concentration, heart rate, and systolic blood pressure showed no differences between the 2 trials. These results indicated that HBO exposure was harmless to DNA, and HBO pre-exposure did not enhance high-intensity exercise performance. As a practical application, athletes who require maximal muscle strength should not inspire high-concentration of [O.sub.2] just before their competitions because it might, as the case may be, impair their performance. Background. The alpha-actinin-3 (ACTN3) R577X polymorphism has been associated with muscle power performance in cross-sectional studies. Methods. We examined baseline knee extensor concentric peak power (PP) and PP change with ~10 weeks of unilateral knee extensor strength training (ST) using air-powered resistance machines in 71 older men (65 [standard deviation = 8] years) and 86 older women (64 [standard deviation = 9] years). Results. At baseline in women, the XX genotype group had an absolute (same resistance) PP that was higher than the RR (p = .005) and RX genotype groups (p = .02). The women XX group also had a relative (70% of one-repetition maximum [1-RM]) PP that was higher than that in the RR (p = .002) and RX groups (p = .008). No differences in baseline absolute or relative PP were observed between ACTN3 genotype groups in men. In men, absolute PP change with ST in the RR (n = 16) group approached a significantly higher value than in the XX group (n = 9; p = .07). In women, relative PP change with ST in the RR group (n = 16) was higher than in the XX group (n = 17; p = .02). Conclusions. The results indicate that the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism influences the response of quadriceps muscle power to ST in older adults.

The stiffness of muscle-tendon units (MTUs) influences many aspects of human movement from athletic performance to injury risk. Presently the controlled-release technique of measuring MTU stiffness has been applied almost exclusively to the distal joints of the body, i.e., the ankle. This is primarily because of the mechanical limitations of implementing this technique. However, in order to better understand how the elastic properties of the MTU affect both performance and injury potential, measurements of MTU stiffness of the more proximal joints must be made. The knee flexors are a logical choice because of the integral role of MTU stiffness of this muscle group in both hamstring strains and knee injury. The purpose of this study was to modify a commercial ergometer so that it could be used to measure the musculotendinous stiffness of the knee flexors. Data are presented for a representative participant to illustrate the feasibility and capability of this ergometer, and the measured MTU stiffness was 519 N*m*[rad.sup.-1] at a knee flexion moment of 100 N*m. Our results indicate that it is indeed possible to modify a commercial ergometer and measure musculotendinous stiffness of large muscle groups crossing proximal joints. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of repetitive drop jumps (DJ) and isometric leg presses (LP) on the tendon properties in knee extensors. Before and after each endurance test, the elongation (L) of the tendon and aponeurosis of the vastus lateralis muscle was measured directly by ultrasonography while the subjects performed ramp isometric knee extensions up to maximum voluntary isometric contraction. Eight men performed 100 repetitions of the DJ and 50 repetitions of the LP for 10 seconds with 10 seconds relaxation. In the DJ, there were no significant differences in L values at any force production levels before and after each endurance test. In LP, however, the L values above 500 N were significantly greater after the endurance test than before. These results suggest that the tendon properties in knee extensors change to become more compliant after the repeated longer-duration contractions, but not after repeated ballistic exercises. The effect of 7-second high-frequency submaximal direct percutaneous electrical stimulation (PES) on contractile characteristics of the knee-extensor (KE) muscles is examined. A small increase at 1-5 minutes followed by a small decline at 10 minutes is observed in posttetanic potentiation (PTP) in KE muscles induced by a brief high-frequency direct submaximal tetanic PES.

Background. The purpose of this efficacy study was to measure the dose-response effect of a free weight-based resistance training program by comparing the effects of two training intensities (low-moderate and high) of the knee extensor (KE) muscles on muscle function, functional limitations, and self-reported disability. Methods. The authors conducted a single-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Twenty-two institutionalized elders (mean age, 81.5 years) were assigned to either high-intensity strength training (HI; n = 8), low-moderate intensity strength training (LI; n = 6), or weight-free placebo-control training (PC: n = 8). The HI group trained at 80% of their 1-repetition maximum and the LI group trained at 40%. All groups performed 3 sets of 8 repetitions, 3 times per week for 10 weeks. Outcome measures included KE maximal strength, KE endurance, and functional performance as assessed by 6-minute walking, chair-rising, and stair-climbing tests, and by self-reported disability. Results. KE strength and endurance, stair-climbing power, and chair-rising time improved significantly in the HI and LI groups compared with the PC group. Six-minute walking distance improved significantly in the HI group but not in the LI group compared with the PC group. Changes observed in HI were significantly different from those observed in the LI group for KE strength and endurance and the 6-minute walking test, with a trend in the same direction for chair-rising and stair-climbing. Changes in strength were significantly related to changes in functional outcomes, explaining 37% to 61% of the variance. Conclusions. These results show strong dose-response relationships between resistance training intensity and strength gains, and between strength gains and functional improvements after resistance training. Low-moderate intensity resistance training of the KE muscles may not be sufficiently robust from a physiologic perspective to achieve optimal improvement of functional performance. Supervised HI, free weight-based training for frail elders appears to be as safe as lower intensity training but is more effective physiologically and functionally.

The purpose of this study was to assess differences in isokinetic muscle torque in the knee among mentally retarded individuals with Down syndrome, mentally retarded individuals without Down syndrome, and sedentary subjects without mental retardation (ns of 7, 8, and 12, respectively). Subjects performed strength tests to knee extension and flexion on a Cybex II isokinetic dynamometer. The measure was peak torque at angular velocities of 60, 120, and 300 degrees/sec. For the Mentally Retarded subjects with and without Down syndrome, the test was performed on two separate days 24 hr. apart. For Sedentary subjects, testing was performed on one day. Their scores indicated significantly higher values of torque than the two other groups. Also, subjects with Down syndrome had inferior muscle torque of lower extremities than peers in the Mentally Retarded Group.

Effects of zinc depletion on total work and peak force of shoulder and knee flexor and extensor muscles in humans have been studied and it was found that peak force was not affected, but that total work for all but knee flexor muscles declined significantly. Data indicate that acute zinc depletion changes total work capacity of skeletal muscle.

In this investigation the complex multi-bundle structure of the cruciate ligaments and their interaction with the tibiofemoral joint was modeled analytically by representing the different regions of the cruciates with ligament elements. A sensitivity analysis was then performed to describe the effect that variations of the model input parameters had on the model variables (outputs). The effect that the cruciate ligament bundles had in controlling joint kinematics was dependent on knee flexion angle, and the load applied to the tibiofemoral joint. For passive range of knee motion with the thigh in the horizontal plane (a common rehabilitation activity), all cruciate ligament bundles were strained with the joint positioned between 0 and 10 deg of knee flexion, between 10 and 50 deg only the anterior bundle of the posterior cruciate ligament A-PCL was strained, and from 50 to 90 deg both the anteromedial portion of the anterior cruciate ligament A-ACL and the A-PCL were strained. This finding indicates that a strain distribution about a transverse cross section of the cruciates exists, and demonstrates the importance of differentiating between the strained and unstrained (unloaded) states of these ligaments. The strain value of a cruciate ligament bundle was an indication of how the bundle controls joint kinematics, while the unstrained values describe how much the ligament bundle must deform before it becomes strained and a restraint to tibiofemoral joint motion. In response to anterior and posterior directed loads, applied parallel to the tibial plateau, the respective ACL and PCL load values were larger in magnitude. The sensitivity of the model outputs to the input parameters was highly dependent on knee flexion angle. The geometrical input parameters of the model (including the ligament insertion site locations and articular surface geometry) had the most pronounced effect on the model output quantities, while the stiffness and initial strain conditions of the ligament bundles had less of an effect on the model outputs. When loaded, the strain values of the ligament bundles were sensitive to the ligament insertion site position. The greatest sensitivity of the model outputs was the femoral insertion of the ACL; supporting clinical impressions and previous experimental findings. Changes in the anterior-posterior dimension of the femoral articular surface did not produce a substantial effect on the model outputs, while changes in the proximal-distal dimension created a large effect; similar results were found for the tibial surface dimensions. These findings indicate that rigid body contact between the articular surfaces may not be a realistic assumption particularly with application to the prediction of tibiofemoral compressive loading and the force/ strain values of the cruciate ligament elements. This also has important implications for the design and clinical application of total knee replacements (that function as rigid bodies), particularly those that spare the PCL.
