Abstract

The Harmonoise reference model is developed for the accurate calcullation of the harmonized noise indicators Lden and Lnight. The reference model consists of a toolbox of state-of-the-art sound propagation models. To demonstrate the validity of the model, it will be validated through comparison with measured data form road and rail traffic. These data have been collected at extensive measurement campaign at nine locations in Europe. Not only acoustic data are measured, but also meteorological quantities and the ground impedance. The meteorological quantities and the ground impedance are used as input in the sound propagation calculations with the reference model. The sound levels measured at the microphone position closest to the source are used to assess the sound power level of the source. In the reference model calculations, the road or railway is approximated by point sources. Sound propagation is calculated for each point source-recever combination, and for 25 meteorological classes. The reference model will be validated by comparing measured sound levels with calculated sound levels at distances up to 1200 m from the road or railway. These comparisons will be performed for short-term sound levels, and for Lden and Lnight determined over the entire measurement campaign.

Abstract

Polylactides (PLAs) are a family of degradable plastics having a component of the dipole moment both perpendicular and parallel to the polymer backbone (i.e. is a type-A polymer). We have studied the sub-glass. segmental and global chain dynamics in a series of fully amorphous samples having an L:D ratio of 80:20, with molecular weights in the range: 3.8 x 10(3) < M-n < 4.7 x 10(4). Finite size effects have been observed for both the segmental and the sub-glass process. The segmental mode was found to have a steeper temperature and pressure dependence compared to the longest normal mode in accord with findings from other type-A polymers. The molecular weight dependence of the longest normal mode relaxation times (tau similar to M-n(3.1)) reflects on the intermediate molecular weight regime (M-c similar to 6 x 10(3)) from Rouse to entangled chains. These findings are compared with the viscoelastic results on the same system. Agreement in the c, value of the WLF equation is found but the scaling of the normalized longest relaxation time derived from the rheological measurements shows a stronger than expected dependence on the molecular weight. 42. Nitric Acid Dehydration Using Mixed Perfluorosulfonate and -carboxylate Ionomer Membranes

Abstract

Investigations confirmed the feasibility and potential advantage of using mixed perfluorosulfonate/carboxylate membranes for nitric acid dehydration. Experimentation consisted of in situ generation of pure sulfonate and mixed sulfonate/carboxylate (as high as 71 mol % carboxylate) polymer films from a perfluorosulfonyl fluoride precursor membrane, the characterization of the material, and a study of the transport characteristics of these membranes. The carboxylate concentration was determined using direct Fourier transform infrared and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Nitric acid dehydration transport tests confirmed that bulk fluxes decreased and the water separation factor dramatically increased as the carboxylate side-chain content increased to 53 mol %.

43. Molecular Control of the Viscosity of Model Dendritically Branched Polystyrene Solutions:  From Polymeric to Colloidal Behavior

Abstract

We explore the concentration dependence of the zero shear viscosity of well-defined dendritically branched polystyrene solutions in relation to their internal structure. Whereas in the past the change of total molecular weight was achieved via change of the number of generations (G) for fixed backbone segment length (average number of units between branches, P), these unique materials with constant number of generations allow monitoring the molecular weight through variation of P. We find that increasing P yields polymer-like behavior, whereas for lower backbone molecular weights a predominantly colloidal particle-like behavior is observed. Our results further indicate that the static properties (the branching ratio, i.e., the ratio of dendritically branched-to-linear polymer radius of gyration, g = 〈Rg2〉/〈Rg2〉linear and scattering intensity) are also sensitive, but to a lesser degree, to the crossover from colloidal to polymeric behavior, especially for the largest molecular weights.

Abstract

Radially linked star-block-linear polystyrenes, star-shaped polymers with star-shaped branching at the ends of each arm, were synthesized by the convergent living anionic polymerization method. These novel structurally modified polymers were synthesized by sequential addition of a specific coupling agent, 4-(chlorodimethylsilyl)styrene (CDMSS), styrene, and CDMSS again to a solution of living polystyrene. Through a convergent process, the addition of the coupling agent to the living polystyrene solution resulted in star-shaped polymers with a hyperbranched core containing a single living site, which was used to initiate styrene to obtain living star-block-linear polystyrene diblock polymers. The living diblock was radially linked by the addition of CDMSS through another convergent process. The resulting polymers were purified by fractionation. The success of the synthesis was demonstrated by the molecular weight progression (gel permeation chromatography with multiangle laser light scattering detection). Glass transition temperature behavior relates to the end-group concentration combined with the effect of the branch points. Dilute solution properties studied by viscometry demonstrate that the polymers have lower intrinsic viscosity values than regular star-shaped polymers.

45. Melt Rheology of Dendritically Branched Polystyrenes

Abstract

Unique rheological properties of combined low melt viscosity and high melt elasticity are reported for a novel series of dendritically branched polystyrenes. Unlike previous studies, dendritically branched materials having different molecular weights but all possessing the same number of generations are studied; this allows the determination of true scaling relationships. Zero shear viscosities scale with the second power of molecular weight until corrected to a state of constant free volume, upon which they scale with the first power of molecular weight. Importantly, the steady state shear compliance for the materials increases with increasing molecular weight and is very large compared to other chain architectures. This finding holds potential technological importance as it may be possible to simultaneously decrease viscosity and increase elasticity by blending with these novel structures. Dynamic light scattering and small-angle neutron scattering studies demonstrate the self-similar nature of these highly branched polymers, thereby establishing that the chain architecture is well-defined. Evidence of entanglements is missing. Remarkably, this implies that it is possible to prepare unentangled polystyrenes having a molecular weight in excess of 1 000 000 (g/mol). Melt dynamics are complex; exhibited behavior encompasses aspects of both classical Rouse−Zimm response and the power-law behavior associated with fractal or gelling systems. Neither Rouse−Zimm nor power-law relaxation time distributions are capable of quantitatively describing the data. However, the corrected viscosity scaling and the viscosity shear thinning behavior are in rough agreement with a theory of polymeric fractals proposed by Muthukumar [J. Chem. Phys. 1985, 83, 3161].

46. Star-block-Linear-block-Star Triblock (Pom-Pom) Polystyrene by Convergent Living Anionic Polymerization

Abstract

Star-block-linear-block-star triblock polystyrene polymers with identical stars at each end of a linear block (pom-pom polymers) were synthesized by the convergent living anionic polymerization method. The sequential synthesis involved first the formation of a living anionic polystyrene star with a hyperbranched core via continuous addition of coupling agent, 4-(chlorodimethylsilyl)styrene, to living polystyrene chains. Subsequent addition of styrene monomer to the living polystyrene star anions produced star-block-linear diblock polystyrene anions that were then coupled with dichlorodimethylsilane to make the architectural triblock. The obtained pom-pom polymers were purified by fractionation. Gel permeation chromatography−multiangle laser light scattering characterization clearly showed the molecular weight changes due to the progression of polymerization. The star-block-linear-block-star triblock copolymers were characterized by NMR (1H and 29Si) spectroscopy and dilute solution viscometry. The architectural triblock copolymers demonstrate interesting dilute solution properties.

48. Polystyrene with Dendritic Branching by Convergent Living Anionic Polymerization

Abstract

The synthesis of two types of polystyrene with dendritic branching was achieved through the development of a novel method that combines living anionic polymerization with a convergent process in a one-pot reaction. The method is based on the slow addition of a reactant such as 4-(chlorodimethylsilyl)styrene (CDMSS), which contains a polymerizable vinyl group and a moiety capable of undergoing quantitative SN2 reaction, to a solution of living polystyryl anions. The sequence of reactions results in star-shaped polymers with the initial chains forming the arms and the residue from the CDMSS forming a hyperbranched core. Different amounts of styrene monomer were added along with the CDMSS in order to increase the molecular weight between branch points. The molecular weights and polydispersities of the dendritic polystyrenes were characterized by GPC coupled with MALLS. The molecular weights of dendritic polystyrenes without added comonomer corresponded to dendritic growth of the core of 3.1−3.4 average generations with polydispersities less than 1.5. The observed narrow molecular weight distributions were interpreted using a kinetic model that relates increased steric hindrance around the reactive site to the reaction rate constants of different size dendritic polymers formed during the reaction. Adding a comonomer along with the coupling agent allowed for the synthesis of high molecular weight dendritic polystyrene (up to Mn > 600 000 g/mol) and generational growth approaching an average of six generations. Intrinsic viscosities of all dendritic polystyrenes produced were found to be much lower than that of linear polystyrene. Thermal analysis of the dendritic polystyrenes showed that Tg versus molecular weight corresponded well to that of linear polystyrene normalized to the number of end groups, being slightly higher due to the effect of branching.

Abstract

A series of new, relatively high molecular weight poly(arylene ether azomethine)s was prepared by condensation of silylated bisphenols with bis[N-(4-fluorobenzylideneaniline)]s (BFBAs) in polar aprotic solvents in the presence of a catalytic amount of cesium fluoride. The polymerization reaction was the formation of an aryl ether linkage by nucleophilic aromatic substitution. Studies of model compounds demonstrated the required electron withdrawal and the ability of the aldimine to activate the fluoride in the ipso position towards the substitution reaction. The resulting polymers were light yellow in color, had intrinsic viscosities between 0.31 and 0.42 dL g-1, and could be solution cast to form amorphous creasable thin films, with glass transition temperatures in the range of 147 to 208 °C. Several of the polymers became partially crystalline on prolonged exposure to the solvent vapor, and the resulting morphologies were investigated by transmission electron microscopy of ultra thin films. Thermogravimetric analysis studies showed little thermal decomposition under nitrogen for temperatures up to 460−492 °C.
