Abstract

Risk mitigation measures are a key component in designing conditions of use of pesticides in crop protection. A 2-step workshop was organized under the auspices of SETAC and the European Commission and gathered risk assessors and risk managers of 21 European countries, industry, academia and agronomical advisors/extension services, in order to provide European regulatory authorities with a toolbox of risk mitigation measures designed to reduce environmental risks of pesticides used in agriculture, and thus contribute to a better harmonization within Europe in the area. The workshop gathered an inventory of the risk mitigation tools for pesticides being implemented or in development in European countries. The inventory was discussed in order to identify the most promising tools for a harmonized toolbox in the European area. The discussions concerned the level of confidence in the technical data on which the tools identified rely, possible regulatory hurdles, expectations as regards the implementation of these tools by farmers and links with risk assessment. Finally, this workshop was a first step towards a network gathering all stakeholders, i.e. experts from national authorities, research sector, industry and farmers, to share information and further develop this toolbox. This paper presents an outline of the content of the toolbox with an emphasis on spray drift reducing techniques, in line with the discussions ongoing in the SPISE workshop.

Non-contrast enhanced 2-point Dixon MRI scans covering mid L2 to mid L3 were acquired to measure VAT volume inside the abdominal cavity. Volume of AAC and hard plaques in renal arteries, truncus celiacus and superior mesenteric artery was measured by computed tomography (CT) scans covering mid T12 to mid L3. Intention-to-treat analysis with imputation for missing data was used to determine longitudinal changes in VAT and AAC volume. Correlations were used to determine associations between VAT and AAC.Results: Significant reduction of VAT volume in the EG (− 7.7%; p< 0.001) combined with no change in the CG (− 1.3%; p=0.46) resulted in a significant 6.4% between group effect (p=0.022). We observed a significant increase of AAC volume in EG (+10.3%; p< 0.001) and CG (12.0%; p< 0.001). AAC differences between groups were not significant (p=0.57). In vascular outlets increases in volume of the hard plaques were observed in both groups, however, not all of them were significant. There was no significant correlation between changes in VAT and AAC volumes.Conclusion: The study confirmed a positive impact of HIT-RT on the metabolic and cardiovascular risk profile with respect to reduction of VAT volume. No positive exercise effect on AAC was observed. However, there was a further progression of AAC volume independent of group affiliation. Whether different exercise regimen may show a positive effect on AAC remains subject to further studies.Keywords: HIT-RT, VAT, AAC, osteopenia, sarcopenia

3. Distributive Lattices, Polyhedra, and Generalized Flow

Abstract

A D-polyhedron is a polyhedron $P$ such that if $x,y$ are in $P$ then so are their componentwise max and min. In other words, the point set of a D-polyhedron forms a distributive lattice with the dominance order. We provide a full characterization of the bounding hyperplanes of D-polyhedra. Aside from being a nice combination of geometric and order theoretic concepts, D-polyhedra are a unifying generalization of several distributive lattices which arise from graphs. In fact every D-polyhedron corresponds to a directed graph with arc-parameters, such that every point in the polyhedron corresponds to a vertex potential on the graph. Alternatively, an edge-based description of the point set can be given. The objects in this model are dual to generalized flows, i.e., dual to flows with gains and losses. These models can be specialized to yield some cases of distributive lattices that have been studied previously. Particular specializations are: lattices of flows of planar digraphs (Khuller, Naor and Klein), of $\alpha$-orientations of planar graphs (Felsner), of c-orientations (Propp) and of $\Delta$-bonds of digraphs (Felsner and Knauer). Abstract

We provide a characterization of upper locally distributive lattices (ULD-lattices) in terms of edge colorings of their cover graphs. In many instances where a set of combinatorial objects carries the order structure of a lattice this characterization yields a slick proof of distributivity or UL-distributivity. This is exemplified by proving a distributive lattice structure on Delta-bonds with invariant circular flow-difference. This instance generalizes several previously studied lattice structures, in particular, c-orientations (Propp), alpha-orientations of planar graphs (Felsner, resp. de Mendez) and planar flows (Khuller, Naor and Klein). 7. Monitoring coastal land-water topography – Very high resolution satellite data analytics reveal data in space and time

Abstract

Coastal morphology is key to modern understanding of threats and nature risks to coastal communities. A quarter of the world’s beaches are eroding due to natural or man-made activities. Dynamics of coastal morphology occurs in space and time (4D), making it difficult to measure using standard survey approaches. We introduce a technique that uses multispectral satellite data and satellite lidar to provide frequent spatial observations of coastal zones. Thanks to international cooperation through the Horizon 2020 program, the analytical processes are based on a highly automatic inversion of the radiative transfer equation (RTE), which enables to model shallow water depth without the access to local survey data. The workflow is installed on AWS cloud environment with directly linked to the satellite data archive. Leveraging these Copernicus satellite data, the solution can generate high frequent and high-resolution shallow water bathymetric data continuously and for the past decade. In combination with land topographic models derived from stereo satellite imagery and verification with bathy-topo data from a space-born green lidar system (IceSat-2 Atlas), this allows for verification and control of vertical accuracies.This solution allows for a rapid and scalable approach to generate shallow water bathymetric and topographic surfaces from small sites to a national level. It serves as a crucial dataset to manage coastal resilience strategies and reduce disaster risk. This will be demonstrated in pilot sites from the southern Baltic to the Caribbean where we can quantify and visualise the changes of the coastal morphology in 4D., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

Watersheds with rich hydrometeorological equipment are still very limited in West Africa but are essential for an improved analysis of environmental changes and their impacts in this region. This study gives an overview of a novel hydrometeorological observatory that was established for two mesoscale watersheds in the Sudan Savanna of Southern Burkina Faso and Northern Ghana as part of the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) program. The study area is characterized by severe land cover changes due to a strongly increasing demand of agricultural land. The observatory is designed for long-term measurements of >30 hydrometeorological variables in subhourly resolution and further variables such as CO2. This information is complemented by long-term daily measurements from national meteorological and hydrological networks, among several other datasets recently established for this region. A unique component of the observatory is a micrometeorological field experiment using eddy covariance stations implemented at three contrasting sites (near-natural, cropland, and degraded grassland) to assess the impact of land cover changes on water, energy, and CO2 fluxes. The datasets of the observatory are needed by many modeling and field studies conducted in this region and are made available via the WASCAL database. Moreover, the observatory forms an excellent platform for future investigations and can be used as observational foundation for environmental observatories for an improved assessment of environmental changes and their socioeconomic impacts for the savanna regions of West Africa.

Abstract

Background: The kidney-brain interaction has been a topic of growing interest. Past studies of the effect of kidney function on intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) outcomes have yielded inconsistent findings. Although the second, main phase of the Intensive Blood Pressure Reduction in Acute Cerebral Hemorrhage Trial (INTERACT2) suggests the effectiveness of early intensive blood pressure (BP) lowering in improving functional recovery after ICH, the balance of potential benefits and harms of this treatment in those with decreased kidney function remains uncertain. Study Design: Secondary analysis of INTERACT2, which randomly assigned patients with ICH with elevated systolic BP (SBP) to intensive (target SBP < 140 mm Hg) or contemporaneous guideline-based (target SBP < 180 mm Hg) BP management. Setting & Participants: 2,823 patients from 144 clinical hospitals in 21 countries. Predictors Admission estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFRs) of patients were categorized into 3 groups based on the CKD-EPI (Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration) creatinine equation: normal or high, mildly decreased, and moderately to severely decreased (>90, 60-90, and <60 mL/min/1.73 m2, respectively). Outcome(s): The effect of admission eGFR on the primary outcome of death or major disability at 90 days (defined as modified Rankin Scale scores of 3-6) was analyzed using a multivariable logistic regression model. Potential effect modification of intensive BP lowering treatment by admission eGFR was assessed by interaction terms. Result(s): Of 2,623 included participants, 912 (35%) and 280 (11%) had mildly and moderately/severely decreased eGFRs, respectively. Patients with moderately/severely decreased eGFRs had the greatest risk for death or major disability at 90 days (adjusted OR, 1.82; 95% CI, 1.28-2.61). Abstract

The annual winter losses of honey bees in Switzerland vary between 9% and 23% during the years 2008 to 2019 and are exceeding the as normal defined 10% level. The causes for the losses can have several reasons. However, one of the main reasons is the infection of the honeybees with the Varroa mite. Therefore, a health services for bees was founded to offer education programs for beekeepers and to support beekeepers in preventing and combating diseases. Switzerland further decided in 2014 to implement an action plan to promote the health of bees. Measures have been taken in the areas of disease prevention, promotion of food supply and reduction of risks from plant protection products. Immediate measures have been implemented such as the inclusion of a flowering strip in the Direct Payments Ordinance and measures to protect bees from plant protection products. Switzerland is actively involved in the development of new OECD test guidelines to evaluate the acute and chronic risk to honey- and wild bees.
