Abstract

Geophysical imaging of the lunar near-surface structure will be key for in situ resource utilization, identification of hazards for crews and infrastructure, and answering science questions on the formation and interior of the Moon. The goal of this white paper is to highlight the value of ground-based geophysical experiments by a crew and to outline a series of experiments to address key science questions. Specifically, we propose for the Artemis III crewed mission multidisciplinary investigations using geophysical methods such as seismic, seismological, ground penetrating radar, and electromagnetic techniques. We identified a series of prime near-surface targets for such geophysical investigations: (1) establishing a lunar fault monitoring observatory across a lobate scarp to study recent lunar seismicity, (2) determining the physical properties of the regolith at the landing site, (3) investigating the structure and in-situ properties of permanently shadowed regions in the context of the search for water ice and other cold-trapped volatiles, and (4) imaging the interior structure of the South-Pole Aitken basin. Beyond Artemis III, the Moon will serve as a comprehensive testbed for extra-terrestrial geophysics. Hence, lessons learned from human geophysical exploration of the Moon will be key for the exploration of the moons of Mars and near-Earth object(s), and prepare us for the human exploration of space beyond the Moon., Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, 27 references

Abstract

The physical properties of cometary nuclei observed today relate to their complex history and help to constrain their formation and evolution. In this article, we review some of the main physical properties of cometary nuclei and focus in particular on the thermal, mechanical, structural and dielectric properties, emphasizing the progress made during the Rosetta mission. Comets have a low density of 480 $\pm$ 220 kg m-3 and a low permittivity of 1.9 - 2.0, consistent with a high porosity of 70 - 80 %, are weak with a very low global tensile strength $<$100 Pa, and have a low bulk thermal inertia of 0 - 60 J K-1 m-2 s-1/2 that allowed them to preserve highly volatiles species (e.g. CO, CO2, CH4, N2) into their interior since their formation. As revealed by 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, the above physical properties vary across the nucleus, spatially at its surface but also with depth. The broad picture is that the bulk of the nucleus consists of a weakly bonded, rather homogeneous material that preserved primordial properties under a thin shell of processed material, and possibly covered by a granular material; this cover might in places reach a thickness of several meters. The properties of the top layer (the first meter) are not representative of that of the bulk nucleus. Abstract

We simulate the stresses induced by temperature changes in a putative hard layer near the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov--Gerasimenko with a thermo-viscoelastic model. Such a layer could be formed by the recondensation or sintering of water ice (and dust grains), as suggested by laboratory experiments and computer simulations, and would explain the high compressive strength encountered by experiments on board the Philae lander. Changes in temperature from seasonal insolation variation penetrate into the comet's surface to depths controlled by the thermal inertia, causing the material to expand and contract. Modelling this with a Maxwellian viscoelastic response on a spherical nucleus, we show that a hard, icy layer with similar properties to Martian permafrost will experience high stresses: up to tens of MPa, which exceed its material strength (a few MPa), down to depths of centimetres to a metre. The stress distribution with latitude is confirmed qualitatively when taking into account the comet's complex shape but neglecting thermal inertia. Stress is found to be comparable to the material strength everywhere for sufficient thermal inertia ($\gtrsim50$ J m$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$ s$^{-1/2}$) and ice content ($\gtrsim 45\%$ at the equator). In this case, stresses penetrate to a typical depth of $\sim0.25$ m, consistent with the detection of metre-scale thermal contraction crack polygons all over the comet. Abstract

The seismic activity of a planet can be described by the corner magnitude, events larger than which are extremely unlikely, and the seismic moment rate, the long‐term average of annual seismic moment release. Marsquake S1222a proves large enough to be representative of the global activity of Mars and places observational constraints on the moment rate. The magnitude‐frequency distribution of relevant Marsquakes indicates a $b$‐value of 1.06. The moment rate is likely between $1.55\times {10}^{15}\mathrm{N}\mathrm{m}/\mathrm{a}$ and $1.97\times {10}^{18}\mathrm{N}\mathrm{m}/\mathrm{a}$, with a marginal distribution peaking at $4.9\times {10}^{16}\mathrm{N}\mathrm{m}/\mathrm{a}$. Comparing this with pre‐InSight estimations shows that these tended to overestimate the moment rate, and that 30% or more of the tectonic deformation may occur silently, whereas the seismicity is probably restricted to localized centers rather than spread over the entire planet., Plain Language Summary: The seismic moment rate is a measure for how fast quakes accumulate deformation of the planet's rigid outer layer, the lithosphere. In the past decades, several models for the deformation rate of Mars were developed either from the traces quakes leave on the surface, or from mathematical models of how quickly the planet's interior cools down and shrinks. The large marsquake that occurred on the 4th of May 2022 now allows a statistical estimation of the deformation accumulated on Mars per year, and thus to confront these models with reality. It turns out that, although there is a considerable overlap, the models published prior to InSight tend to overestimate the seismic moment rate, and hence the ongoing deformation on Mars. Possible explanations are that 30% or more of the deformation occurs silently, that is, without causing quakes, or that not the entire planet is seismically active but only specific regions., Key Points: A single large marsquake suffices to constrain the global seismic moment rate. Abstract

We analyze the sequence of seismic events of different types as recorded by the SEIS instrument of the InSight mission. After several weeks without any detection, event counts started to increase at the end of May 2019. The majority of recorded events belongs to the class of 2.4 Hz events, which prominently excite a continuously observed natural resonance frequency. Comparison with expected event counts from a constant-rate Poisson process shows a repeated, step wise increase of the event rate with time. At the same time, event amplitudes, and hence magnitudes, are found to increase as well.

Abstract

The InSight mission collected an astounding seismic dataset from Mars during more than four years of operation until it was retired in 12/2022. The Marsquake Service detected over 1300 seismic events. The largest marsquake reached magnitude 4.6. Two other significant events are distant impacts, with magnitudes M4.0 and 4.2 and crater diameters of 130 and 150 m respectively. We present the current understanding of the Martian seismicity and the different types of events observed on Mars.Low Frequency (LF) family are the largest events and include energy predominantly below 1 Hz. They are similar to teleseismic events on Earth, with clear P and S waves. The epicenter is known for about half of the LF events, fewer have constrained back-azimuth. Seismicity occurs at only a few spots around Mars - a large number of LF events are located at 26–30° at the volcanic Cerberus Fossae region. Two events lie beyond the core shadow and have PP and SS phases. High-frequency (HF) family exhibit energy predominantly at and above the 2.4 Hz local subsurface resonance. HF events generally have magnitudes below M2.5 and originate from central Cerberus Fossae. Likely these are shallow events associated with volcanic dykes. HF events have inter and intra seasonal trends not yet understood. A small number of HF events have higher frequency content, up to 20–30 Hz with amplification on the horizontal components, and are termed Very High Frequency (VF) events. Abstract

The instrument package SEIS (Seismic Experiment for Internal Structure) with the two co-located seismometers VBB and SP is installed on the surface of Mars as part of NASA's InSight mission. When compared to terrestrial installations, SEIS is deployed in a very harsh wind and temperature environment that leads to inevitable degradation of the quality of the recorded data. The daily atmospheric temperature variations of approx. 80K are attenuated by different insulation layers to approx. 15K peak-to-peak at the sensor level. Typical wind speeds vary between 0 and 5 m/s leading to a diurnal variation in the broad-band rms noise level by two orders of magnitude. One ubiquitous artifact in the raw broad-band data is an abundance of one-sided, transient pulses often accompanied by high-frequency spikes. We show that these pulses, which we term "glitches", can be modeled as the response of the instrument to a step in acceleration, while the spikes can be modeled as the response to a simultaneous step in displacement. We attribute the glitches primarily to intermittent stress relaxation events internal to SEIS caused by the large diurnal temperature variations to which the instrument is exposed during a Martian sol. Only a small fraction of glitches correspond to a motion of the SEIS package as a whole caused by minuscule tilts of the instrument. Whilst such kind of data disturbances are typically discarded when occurring in terrestrial data, this is no option for the data returned from the Red Planet. We therefore do not only demonstrate their effects on the seismic data and analyze their origins, but also propose algorithms that are able to detect and remove many of these (mostly) non-seismic signals. We further published our codes (both Python and MATLAB) so that interested researchers can make their own choices on how to treat the data and to which extent.

Abstract

International audience; We simulate the stresses induced by temperature changes in a putative hard layer near the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko with a thermo-viscoelastic model. Such a layer could be formed by the recondensation or sintering of water ice (and dust grains), as suggested by laboratory experiments and computer simulations, and would explain the high compressive strength encountered by experiments on board the Philae lander. Changes in temperature from seasonal insolation variation penetrate into the comet's surface to depths controlled by the thermal inertia, causing the material to expand and contract. Modelling this with a Maxwellian viscoelastic response on a spherical nucleus, we show that a hard, icy layer with similar properties to Martian permafrost will experience high stresses: up to tens of MPa, which exceed its material strength (a few MPa), down to depths of centimetres to a metre. The stress distribution with latitude is confirmed qualitatively when taking into account the comet's complex shape but neglecting thermal inertia. Stress is found to be comparable to the material strength everywhere for sufficient thermal inertia (50 J m −2 K −1 s −1/2) and ice content (45% at the equator). In this case, stresses penetrate to a typical depth of ∼0.25 m, consistent with the detection of metre-scale thermal contraction crack polygons all over the comet. Thermal fracturing may be an important erosion process on cometary surfaces which breaks down material and weakens cliffs.
