Abstract

BACKGROUND Animal and human bite injuries are a relevant health problem worldwide. With the increasing number of pets, bite injuries are becoming more frequent. Previous studies on animal and human bite injuries in Switzerland were completed several years ago. The aim of the present study was to provide a detailed overview of patients with bite injuries admitted to a tertiary emergency department in Switzerland in terms of demographics, injury patterns and treatment strategies. METHODS A 9-year cross-sectional analysis of patients presenting to the emergency department of Bern University Hospital in the period January 2013 to December 2021 following an animal or human bite injury. RESULTS A total of 829 patients with bite injuries were identified, including 70 for postexposure prophylaxis only. Their median age was 39 (IQR 27-54) years and 53.6% were female. Most patients were bitten by a dog (44.3%), followed by cats (31.5%) and humans (15.2%). Most bite injuries were mild (80.2%); severe injuries were mainly found in dog bites (28.3%). Most patients were treated within six hours after human (80.9%) or dog (61.6%) bites; after cat bites, patients often presented with a delay (74.5%) and signs of infection (73.6%). Human bite wounds were superficial in the majority of cases (95.7%), rarely showed signs of infection (5.2%) at the time of presentation and hospitalisation was never required. CONCLUSIONS Our study provides a detailed overview of patients admitted to an emergency department of a tertiary Swiss University Hospital after an animal or human bite. In summary, bite injuries are common among patients who present to the emergency department. Therefore, primary and emergency care clinicians should be familiar with these injuries and their treatment strategies. The high risk of infection, particularly in cat bites, may warrant surgical debridement in the initial treatment of these patients. Prophylactic antibiotic therapy and close follow-up examinations are recommended in most cases.

Abstract

Accidents Caused by Gardening - Trivial or Serious? 5-Year Retrospective Analysis at the University Emergency Department Berne Abstract. Gardening is a popular leisure activity in Switzerland. Approximately 1 million non-occupational accidents are recorded each year; 600,000 of these occur at home or in pursuit of a hobby, including approx. 16,000 accidents while gardening. The aim of this study is to investigate gardening-related accidents. The data for this study were generated from the database of the management system of Berne University Hospital, Switzerland, and retrospectively analyzed. Patients were enrolled who were at least 16 years old - since younger patients in Switzerland are normally treated in specialised Emergency Departments for Paediatrics. The study was restricted to patients who suffered an accident that resulted in physical impairment while working in their own garden. The data were then analysed based on age, sex, triage category, mechanism, causing object, lesion site, diagnoses, severity of injury (monotraumatic or combined with more than one region or polytrauma), in-patient or out-patient treatment. Gardening-related accidents were mainly suffered by middle aged adults (40-69 years). Men were more often affected than women. At consultation, the injury was mostly monotraumatic and could be treated in an out-patient setting. Patients mainly complained of eye injuries and lacerations. The exposed areas of the eyes, fingers and the head or face were the most affected body regions. Falls and stumbling often led to accidents. Injuries were mainly caused by organic material or by the improper use of gardening tools. The data analysis showed that many injuries could have been avoided by simple preventive measures.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: In this study, for the first time we report the genome-wide DNA methylation profile of skin tumour in horses and describe differentially methylated genomic regions (DMRs) with respect to healthy skin. MATERIALS & METHODS: The comparative analysis of DNA methylation patterns detected using Reduced Representation Bisulfite Sequencing (RRBS) technique, allowed identification of 136 regions showing differential methylation between sarcoid and normal skin tissue. RESULTS: Most of the identified DMRs were short fragments, less than 1 kb in size, located in the intergenic regions. Among identified DMRs there were also regions located within genes directly or indirectly related with oncogenesis. We additionally validated 9 CpG sites showing hypomethylation and 9 CpG sites that were hypermethylated in lesional sample, confirming the identified changes in the DNA methylation. CONCLUSION: Knowledge on the changes taking place in the process of DNA methylation may provide a basis for the development of new alternative diagnostic or therapeutic approaches to equine sarcoids.
