Abstract

To investigate the interplay between collective and single particle degrees of freedom in odd nuclei, Recoil distance Doppler-shift and Doppler-shift attenuation lifetime measurements were carried out for levels in 155Dy in coincidence detection of gamma-rays. 26 lifetimes were determined using the Differential decay curve method. Particle plus triaxial rotor model (PTRM) calculations were performed to compare the experimental level scheme and transition strengths with theoretical ones in order to get information on the quadrupole deformation (є,γ) of the bands. As a result, different quadrupole deformations for the one-quasineutron bands at low and medium spins are deduced.

19. Prevalence of synchronous bilateral tonsil squamous cell carcinoma: A retrospective study.

Abstract

Objectives: The prevalence of synchronous bilateral tonsil cancer remains unexplored. To date, only 38 cases have been described in the literature. With an aim to substantiate the Danish recommendation of performing bilateral tonsillectomy in patients with suspected or proven tonsil cancer and in patients with cervical carcinoma metastasis from an unknown primary tumour, this study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of synchronous bilateral tonsil cancer. Design: A retrospective review of all patients diagnosed with tonsil cancer in the period 2000‐2015, Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark, was performed. Results: Seven of 211 (3.3%) consecutive patients with tonsil cancer, who had undergone bilateral tonsillectomy (n = 180) or unilateral tonsillectomy (clinically normal side) combined with contralateral tonsil biopsy (side with suspected cancer) (n = 31), had synchronous bilateral tonsil cancer. Furthermore, dysplasia was found in the contralateral tonsil in two patients with unilateral tonsil cancer. Four of 171 (2.3%) patients with suspected unilateral tonsillar cancer had additional contralateral tonsil cancer. Three of 34 (8.8%) patients without clinical signs of tonsillar malignancy on any side (32 patients with carcinoma of unknown primary) had synchronous bilateral tonsil cancer. In none of the patients were bilateral tonsil cancer suspected. Patients with unilateral vs synchronous bilateral tonsil cancer had similar clinical and tumour characteristics. Conclusion: Knowledge on additional contralateral synchronous tonsil cancer is crucial for avoidance of early recurrence of oropharyngeal cancer in patients with tonsil cancer. Abstract

In spite of the fact that since the end of the eighties, the horse chestnut leafminer, Cameraria ohridella, has established itself throughout Europe, native predators such as ants and birds are not attuned to this neozoic species. In contrast, several parasitic wasp species already started to exploit the invasive horse chestnut leafminer, but until now parasitation rates are quite low, mainly because of asynchrony in the lifecycles of parasitoids and host. Only the removal of leaf litter, in which pupae hibernate, is at the moment a strategy to reduce the infestation level in the next year. Unfortunately, not only hibernating horse chestnut leafminers but also parasitoids are removed, and important resources for biocontrol are unused. In the current study, we investigated the potential efficiency of the horse chestnut leafminer parasitoid complex extracted from leaf litter in defined environments. Parasitoids were released at different densities to investigate density dependence in parasitation rates. Although seven different species were released in our experiments, only Pnigalio agraules turned out to be responsible for biocontrol of C. ohridella. We recorded parasitation rates of up to 35%. Overall, parasitation rates were independent of the leafminer density but increased fourfold if ten times more parasitoid individuals were released. Unfortunately, none of the parasitoid species could be established in the experimental units in the long run. Results are compared to other parasitoid-leafminer systems, and promotion of horse chestnut leafminer parasitoids to support natural selection and biological control of the horse chestnut leafminer is discussed. Abstract

Electromagnetic transition probabilities were measured using the recoil distance Doppler-shift technique and the 40Ca(152Sm,4n) 188Pb reaction at a beam energy of 805 MeV to investigate shape coexistence in 188Pb. For the first time, a plunger was combined with Gammasphere and the Argonne Fragment Mass Analyzer. It was possible to measure the lifetimes of two states in the prolate band of 188Pb and, thus, provide for the first time evidence for the collectivity of this band. A three-level mixing calculation revealed that the first 2+ state is predominantly of prolate character.

Abstract

Recoil distance Doppler-shift and Doppler-shift attenuation lifetime measurements were carried out for levels in Dy-155 through the coincident detection of. rays. Twenty-six lifetimes, most of them for the first time, were determined using the differential decay curve method for the analysis of the data. At low and medium spins, particle-plus-triaxial-rotor calculations reveal different quadrupole deformations for the one-quasineutron bands in this transitional nucleus. At high spin, the reduced B(E2) transition probabilities confirm with a better precision the results of a previous study implying decreased collectivity with increasing spin.

Abstract

Gamma rays from the N = Z-2 nucleus (50)Fe have been observed, establishing the rotational ground state band up to the state J(pi) = 11+ at 6.994 MeV excitation energy. The experimental Coulomb energy differences, obtained by comparison with the isobaric analog states in its mirror (50)Cr, confirm the qualitative interpretation of the backbending patterns in terms of successive alignments of proton and neutron pairs. A quantitative agreement with experiment has been achieved by exact shell model calculations, incorporating the differences in radii along the yrast bands, and properly renormalizing the Coulomb matrix elements in the pf model space.

Abstract

Subpicosecond lifetimes of states in shears band 1 in 97Pb were measured by means of the recoil distance method employing Gammasphere and the New Yale Plunger Device. The extracted reduced matrix elements, B(M1), show a clear sensitivity to the crossing of different shears configurations reflecting the closing and reopening of the shears blades. The energies and B(M1) values in the band crossing region are successfully described in the framework of the semiclassical model of the shears bands. The relevance of core rotation contributions are shown. The results point to the existence of shears states with an angular momentum coupling angle larger than 90°.

Abstract

Gamma ray linear polarization and picosecond lifetimes have been measured for levels in the neutron deficient nucleus Xe-114 using the EUROBALL IV spectrometer and the Cologne plunger device. The EUCLIDES Si-ball was used to improve the reaction channel selectivity. The linear polarization results have, for the first time, unambiguously determined the electromagnetic character of the dipole transitions de-exciting the negative parity level sequence, providing clear evidence for enhanced octupole collectivity. The discovery of two E3 transitions and the measurement of the lifetimes of the states depopulated by these transitions have allowed a quantitative determination of the octupole collectivity in the A approximate to 112 mass region. The large measured B(E3) values, close to approximate to 70 W.u., are among the strongest observed hitherto and indicate a coherent proton-neutron contribution to the octupole moment., QC 20100525
