Abstract

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy is a well recognised cancer therapy applied usually for spread brain tumors. The alpha particles emitted at neutron capture in Boron will bring localised and excessive damage to surrounding cells while special medicaments are reponsible to achive higher Boron concentration in tumor than in healthy tissue. This article discusses a method to calculate treatment planning for BNCT using adjoint Monte Carlo. The proposed method aims at resolving a problematic issue of obtaining nonzero estimates for a monodirectional beam as sampled adjoint pseudoparticles would hardly coincide with a single preferred direction. The method descibed in this paper uses Legendre expansion to utilise adjoint scores at the beam exit not paralel with the beam tube to interpolate to the direction of paralel direction.

Abstract

The PUMA project, a Specific Targeted Research Project (STREP) of the European Union EURATOM 6th Framework Program, is mainly aimed at providing additional key elements for the utilisation and transmutation of plutonium and minor actinides (neptunium and americium) in contemporary and future (high temperature) gas-cooled reactor design, which are promising tools for improving the sustainability of the nuclear fuel cycle. PUMA would also contribute to the reduction of Pu and MA stockpiles and to the development of safe and sustainable reactors for C02-free energy generation. The project runs from September 1, 2006 until August 31, 2009. PUMA also contributes to technological goals of the Generation IV International Forum. It contributes to developing and maintaining the competence in reactor technology in the EU and addresses European stakeholders on key issues for the future of nuclear energy in the EU. The article presents the findings of a research study about closed fuel cycle and the impact of extra Minor Actinide (MA) isotopes towards Gas-Cooled Fast Reactor (GCFR). It describes the role of closed nuclear fuel cycle in GCFR's achievement of sustainability. Furthermore, it outlines several recommendations for future research about the fuel cycle.

Abstract

International audience; With Accelerator-Driven Systems (ADS), the incineration of large quantities of minor actinides is envisaged by coupling a particleaccelerator to a subcritical core. Despite the subcritical operation of the core, a monitoring tool is indispensable in an ADS for both safetyand operational purposes. Several experimental techniques are under investigation today within the European FP7 project FREYA (FastReactor Experiments for hYbrid Applications) at the VENUS facility at SCK-CEN, where the lead fast zero-power VENUS-F core is coupledto the GENEPI-3C deuteron accelerator. The proposed monitoring concept combines an initial reactivity determination, e.g. by the pulsedneutron source technique, a long-term relative reactivity monitor, by the current-to-flux (CTF) technique, and an interim cross-checking,by the source jerk technique. In this paper the CTF technique is presented as a candidate for continuous reactivity monitoring. Staticmodal analysis is applied to evaluate the point kinetics relationship between accelerator source neutrons and the neutron flux. As a firsttest case, the zero-power VENUS-F SC1 core is considered. Spatial correction on the CTF monitor is evaluated by measurement results forthe control rods worth at different detector positions. Good agreement between the modal and experimental spatial correction factor (SCF) isfound with 9 modes. Limited SCF are found in the VENUS-F reflector, far away from the perturbation. Modal analysis is envisaged for themonitoring of burn-up in demonstrator ADS like MYRRHA.
