Despite decades of challenge to the Enlightenment dualisms of Western environmental thought, they remain deeply embedded with respect to agriculture because of the ways in which cultivation is implicated in humanity's move out of nature and into culture. In contrast, in non-Western contexts, scholars have more commonly discussed cultivation as a close engagement between humans and the more-than-human world. Emergent research examines how environmental engagements change in the encounters of migration from Majority to Minority Worlds, providing new ideas and practices for sustainable futures. We contribute to these debates with a study in the Sunraysia region of Australia's Murray-Darling Basin, an area facing significant climate change impacts. We examine environmental engagements of ethnic minority migrants (Burundian, Hazara, Tongan, Vietnamese, and Italian) alongside Anglo-Australian residents. Findings identify both differences and connections between these groups and show complex interweavings of environmental engagement, ethnic background, migration history, and generational change. Groups perceive and respond to the local environment differently and in the context of their premigration experience, challenging dominant (Minority World) perceptions of environment as a freestanding and separate entity. The strongest cross-cutting theme is valuing environment for its food provision, associated with positive emotions and an ethic of care. Participants relate to food gardens rather than farms as places of pleasure and close engagement. Australian farms are understood as places where different rules apply and harmful chemicals must be used. Food gardens are an important site of cross-cultural encounter and experiment that can move environmental scholarship forward in the search for alternative futures. Amidst calls for paradigm shifts in environmental scholarship, we track an emergent literature on how environmental values, knowledge and behaviour (EVKB) change (or not) with the migration process. We focus on the role of Majority World migrants to the Minority World. Large-scale survey research into EVKB is beginning to consider both ethnicity and migration history as important variables, but tends to leave the concepts of environment and environmental behaviour unexamined. Western EVKB indicators thus tend to be universalized rather than understood as themselves culturally specific. An emergent literature attempts to improve both quantitative and qualitative research on EVKB by broadening the conceptualization of environmental behaviour to include the practices of Majority World migrants. Those studies throw new light on the process of acculturation as having disruptive or solidifying potential for sustainable practices. We summarize four implications for future research. There is a need to go beyond western logics in research design and method. Straightforward assumptions about the 'pro' in pro-environmental behaviour need to be challenged. Cases of EVKB's persistence post-migration and positive influence on the broader population should be sought out and examined. The migration process provides real-time experiments in enacting alternative worlds.

This article explores knowledge transfers in international migration and development through insights from Pacific Island seasonal workers participating in Australia's Seasonal Worker Programme (SWP). We discuss actual and potential horticultural knowledge transfers that are enabled when circular migrants are engaged in agriculture in their place of migration origin and destination. Transfers identified by seasonal workers themselves include: technologies to improve horticultural production, exposure to different crop types, and techniques to improve crop yields. We argue that SWP migrants should be reframed as knowledge holders (not 'unskilled' or 'low-skilled' labourers), and reflect on how knowledge transfers can be better supported to enable benefits for communities of origin and destination.

In the industrialized West, cars are considered an essential part of everyday life. Their dominance is underpinned by the challenges of managing complex, geographically stretched daily routines. Drivers' emotional and embodied relationships with automobiles also help to explain why car cultures are difficult to disrupt. This article foregrounds ethnic diversity to complicate notions of a "love affair" with the car. We report on the mobilities of fourteen Chinese migrants living in Sydney, Australia-many of whom described embodied dispositions against the car, influenced by their life histories. Their emotional responses to cars and driving, shaped by transport norms and infrastructures in their places of origin, ranged from pragmatism and ambivalence to fear and hostility. The lived experiences of these migrants show that multiple cultures of mobility coexist, even in ostensibly car-dependent societies. Migrants' life histories and contemporary practices provide an opportunity to reflect on fissures in the logic of automobility.

The geographical distribution of mixed-ethnicity (or mixed-race) couples is an important indicator of the spatial dimensions of cultural 'mixing' in a given society. A small number of studies have mapped the residential geographies of mixed-ethnicity couples, revealing distinctive residential patterns that differ from those of each partner's respective ethnic group. Most such analyses have adopted broad pan-ethnic or racial categories (e.g. 'black-white', 'white-Asian'). The Australian Census - which eschews broad racial categories - provides an opportunity to explore the unique residential geographies of different 'types' of mixed-ethnicity couples. Using customised 2011 Census data, this paper maps the residential geographies of diverse mixed-ethnicity couples in Australia's most populous cities: Sydney and Melbourne. We focus on couples where one partner nominated 'Anglo-European' ancestry and the other nominated one of five 'minority' ancestries. Our findings highlight the value in disaggregating the coarse pan-ethnic or racial groupings adopted in some existing studies, and prescribed in some national censuses. The residential geographies of mixed-ethnicity couples challenge established perspectives on urban ethnic landscapes. As these couples grow in number, particularly in immigrant societies, they have the potential to fundamentally reshape established ethnic residential geographies away from patterns of residential segregation. Fine-grained analyses such as ours provide scope to explore the myriad directions in which these shifts will unfurl. They also provide a starting point for better understanding the preferences and pressures that shape the residential geographies of diverse mixed-ethnicity couples.

Irrigated agriculture faces significant challenges under climate change, and may not be feasible in parts of the Murray‐Darling Basin beyond 2050. Recent research into the cultural politics of water has paid limited attention to the water cultures and relations of irrigators in Minority World countries. We analyse the water relations of grape farm irrigators in the Sunraysia region of Victoria using interviews and farm tours undertaken between 2014 and 2016. Findings are summarised under five themes: (1) the sociality of irrigation water, (2) temporal and spatial relations, (3) the risk of rain, (4) the micro‐scale of water knowledge, and (5) environment as actor. These themes shed light on the diverse relations that constitute both environmental and irrigation water. Irrigators are embedded in these relations at multiple scales, local and distant, mediated by technology and infrastructure. The scale of our focus makes visible water and other forms of environmental knowledge that often go unnoticed in broader debates over irrigation. The concept of "the environment", understood as an embodied actor in policy discourse and by irrigators, is an emergent trend that warrants ongoing research attention.

Families in contemporary urban settings in the Minority World face multiple interrelated and complex predicaments. Austerity policies aimed at reducing government budget deficits have eroded basic service provision and harshened economic outlooks in ways that place added stress on family life (Hall 2016). The spectre of environmental crisis looms large, and a suite of policies is increasingly targeting households as change agents (Head et al. 2013). Meanwhile, within cities, housing is becoming ever more unaffordable. Demand for new dwellings has outstripped population growth due to a confluence of socio-demographic trends that contribute to shrinking average household sizes: population ageing, high rates of divorce and delayed age of family formation (Wulff et al. 2004). In Australia, where the authors live and work, one-quarter of households now contain just one person (ABS 2012). Similar socio-demographic processes, with associated urban, social, sustainability and spatial planning implications, have unfurled throughout Europe, the United Kingdom and North America (Buzar et al. 2005, Rérat 2012). Families are at once subject to such intersecting external pressures, and are key “agents of urban transformation” (Buzar et al. 2005: 413) with influence over environmental and socio-economic trends. Crises are multiple, and are often mutually reinforcing, or held in tension, as when trade-offs emerge between financial (or temporal) poverty, caring duties, and desires to reduce environmental burden (Gibson et al. 2013). Families are a fundamental, everyday social unit where such tensions are played out and resolved.
