The degrees of freedom of Active Flux are cell averages and point values along the cell boundaries. These latter are shared between neighbouring cells, which gives rise to a globally continuous reconstruction. The semi-discrete Active Flux method uses its degrees of freedom to obtain Finite Difference approximations to the spatial derivatives which are used in the point value update. The averages are updated using a quadrature of the flux and making use of the point values as quadrature points. The integration in time employs standard Runge-Kutta methods. We show that this generalization of the Active Flux method in two and three spatial dimensions is stationarity preserving for linear acoustics on Cartesian grids, and present an analysis of numerical diffusion and stability.

The numerical method of dynamical low-rank approximation (DLRA) has recently been applied to various kinetic equations showing a significant reduction of the computational effort. In this paper, we apply this concept to the linear Boltzmann-Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (Boltzmann-BGK) equation which due its high dimensionality is challenging to solve. Inspired by the special structure of the non-linear Boltzmann-BGK problem, we consider a multiplicative splitting of the distribution function. We propose a rank-adaptive DLRA scheme making use of the basis update & Galerkin integrator and combine it with an additional basis augmentation to ensure numerical stability, for which an analytical proof is given and a classical hyperbolic Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition is derived. This allows for a further acceleration of computational times and a better understanding of the underlying problem in finding a suitable discretization of the system. Numerical results of a series of different test examples confirm the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method compared to the numerical solution of the full system.

The active flux (AF) method is a compact high-order finite volume method that simultaneously evolves cell averages and point values at cell interfaces. Within the method of lines framework, the existing Jacobian splitting-based point value update incorporates the upwind idea but suffers from a stagnation issue for nonlinear problems due to inaccurate estimation of the upwind direction, and also from a mesh alignment issue partially resulting from decoupled point value updates. This paper proposes to use flux vector splitting for the point value update, offering a natural and uniform remedy to those two issues. To improve robustness, this paper also develops bound-preserving (BP) AF methods for hyperbolic conservation laws. Two cases are considered: preservation of the maximum principle for the scalar case, and preservation of positive density and pressure for the compressible Euler equations. The update of the cell average is rewritten as a convex combination of the original high-order fluxes and robust low-order (local Lax-Friedrichs or Rusanov) fluxes, and the desired bounds are enforced by choosing the right amount of low-order fluxes. A similar blending strategy is used for the point value update. In addition, a shock sensor-based limiting is proposed to enhance the convex limiting for the cell average, which can suppress oscillations well. Numerically the reconstructability of unknown parameters in inverse problems heavily relies on the chosen data. Therefore, it is crucial to design an experiment that yields data that is sensitive to the parameters. We approach this problem from the perspective of a least squares optimization, and examine the positivity of the Gauss-Newton Hessian at the global minimum point of the objective function. We propose a general framework that provides an efficient down-sampling strategy that can select data that preserves the strict positivity of the Hessian. Matrix sketching techniques from randomized linear algebra is heavily leaned on to achieve this goal. The method requires drawing samples from a certain distribution, and gradient free sampling methods are integrated to execute the data selection. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of this method in selecting sensor locations for Schr\"odinger potential reconstruction.

This paper studies the active flux (AF) methods for two-dimensional hyperbolic conservation laws, focusing on the flux vector splitting (FVS) for the point value update and bound-preserving (BP) limitings, which is an extension of our previous work [J.M. Duan, W. Barsukow, C. Klingenberg, arXiv:2405.02447]. The FVS-based point value update is shown to address the mesh alignment issue that appeared in a quasi-2D Riemann problem along one axis direction on Cartesian meshes. Consequently, the AF methods based on the FVS outperform those using Jacobian splitting, which are prone to transonic and mesh alignment issues. A shock sensor-based limiting is proposed to enhance the convex limiting for the cell average, which can reduce oscillations well. Some benchmark problems are tested to verify the accuracy, BP property, and shock-capturing ability of our BP AF method. Moreover, for the double Mach reflection and forward-facing step problems, the present AF method can capture comparable or better small-scale features compared to the third-order discontinuous Galerkin method with the TVB limiter on the same mesh resolution, while using fewer degrees of freedom, demonstrating the efficiency and potential of our BP AF method for high Mach number flows., Comment: A more elaborate version, based on this preprint and arXiv:2405.02447 can be found as arXiv:2411.00065. 30 pages, 18 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2405.02447

We develop a second-order accurate central scheme for the two-dimensional hyperbolic system of in-homogeneous conservation laws. The main idea behind the scheme is that we combine the well-balanced deviation method with the Kurganov-Tadmor (KT) scheme. The approach satisfies the well-balanced property and retains the advantages of KT scheme: Riemann-solver-free and the avoidance of oversampling on the regions between Riemann-fans. The scheme is implemented and applied to a number of numerical experiments for the Euler equations with gravitational source term and the results are non-oscillatory. Based on the same idea, we construct a semi-discrete scheme where we combine the above two methods and illustrate the maximum principle.

In this paper, we propose a new MUSCL scheme by combining the ideas of the Kurganov and Tadmor scheme and the so-called Deviation method which results in a well-balanced finite volume method for the hyperbolic balance laws, by evolving the difference between the exact solution and a given stationary solution. After that, we derive a semi-discrete scheme from this new scheme and it can be shown to be essentially TVD when applied to a scalar conservation law. In the end, we apply and validate the developed methods by numerical experiments and solve classical problems featuring Euler equations with gravitational source term.

In a variety of scientific and engineering domains, the need for high-fidelity and efficient solutions for high-frequency wave propagation holds great significance. Recent advances in wave modeling use sufficiently accurate fine solver outputs to train a neural network that enhances the accuracy of a fast but inaccurate coarse solver. In this paper we build upon the work of Nguyen and Tsai (2023) and present a novel unified system that integrates a numerical solver with a deep learning component into an end-to-end framework. In the proposed setting, we investigate refinements to the network architecture and data generation algorithm. A stable and fast solver further allows the use of Parareal, a parallel-in-time algorithm to correct high-frequency wave components. Our results show that the cohesive structure improves performance without sacrificing speed, and demonstrate the importance of temporal dynamics, as well as Parareal, for accurate wave propagation., Comment: To appear in the proceedings of ENUMATH 2023

Active Flux is an extension of the Finite Volume method and additionally incorporates point values located at cell boundaries. This gives rise to a globally continuous approximation of the solution. Originally, the Active Flux method emerged as a fully discrete method, and required an exact or approximate evolution operator for the point value update. For nonlinear problems such an operator is often difficult to obtain, in particular for multiple spatial dimensions. We demonstrate that a new semi-discrete Active Flux method (first described in Abgrall&Barsukow, 2023 for one space dimension) can be used to solve nonlinear hyperbolic systems in multiple dimensions without requiring evolution operators. We focus here on the compressible Euler equations of inviscid hydrodynamics and third-order accuracy. We introduce a multi-dimensional limiting strategy and demonstrate the performance of the new method on both Riemann problems and subsonic flows.

Bacterial motion is steered by external stimuli (chemotaxis), and the motion described on the mesoscopic scale is uniquely determined by a parameter $K$ that models velocity change response from the bacteria. This parameter is called chemotaxis kernel. In a practical setting, it is inferred by experimental data. We deploy a PDE-constrained optimization framework to perform this reconstruction using velocity-averaged, localized data taken in the interior of the domain. The problem can be well-posed or ill-posed depending on the data preparation and the experimental setup. In particular, we propose one specific design that guarantees numerical reconstructability and local convergence. This design is adapted to the discretization of $K$ in space and decouples the reconstruction of local values of $K$ into smaller cell problems, opening up parallelization opportunities. Numerical evidences support the theoretical findings.

Computational methods for thermal radiative transfer problems exhibit high computational costs and a prohibitive memory footprint when the spatial and directional domains are finely resolved. A strategy to reduce such computational costs is dynamical low-rank approximation (DLRA), which represents and evolves the solution on a low-rank manifold, thereby significantly decreasing computational and memory requirements. Efficient discretizations for the DLRA evolution equations need to be carefully constructed to guarantee stability while enabling mass conservation. In this work, we focus on the Su-Olson closure leading to a linearized internal energy model and derive a stable discretization through an implicit coupling of internal energy and particle density. Moreover, we propose a rank-adaptive strategy to preserve local mass conservation. Numerical results are presented which showcase the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed low-rank method compared to the solution of the full system.

We propose a second-order accurate semi-implicit and well-balanced finite volume scheme for the equations of ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) including gravitational source terms. The scheme treats all terms associated with the acoustic pressure implicitly while keeping the remaining terms part of the explicit sub-system. This semi-implicit approach makes the method particularly well suited for problems in the low Mach regime. We combine the semi-implicit scheme with the deviation well-balancing technique and prove that it maintains equilibrium solutions for the magnetohydrostatic case up to rounding errors. In order to preserve the divergence-free property of the magnetic field enforced by the solenoidal constraint, we incorporate a constrained transport method in the semi-implicit framework. Second order of accuracy is achieved by means of a standard spatial reconstruction technique with total variation diminishing (TVD) property, and by an asymptotic preserving (AP) time stepping algorithm built upon the implicit-explicit (IMEX) Runge-Kutta time integrators. Numerical tests in the low Mach regime and near magnetohydrostatic equilibria support the low Mach and well-balanced properties of the numerical method.

Chemotaxis is the physical phenomenon that bacteria adjust their motions according to chemical stimulus. A classical model for this phenomenon is a kinetic equation that describes the velocity jump process whose tumbling/transition kernel uniquely determines the effect of chemical stimulus on bacteria. The model has been shown to be an accurate model that matches with bacteria motion qualitatively. For a quantitative modeling, biophysicists and practitioners are also highly interested in determining the explicit value of the tumbling kernel. Due to the experimental limitations, measurements are typically macroscopic in nature. Do macroscopic quantities contain enough information to recover microscopic behavior? In this paper, we give a positive answer. We show that when given a special design of initial data, the population density, one specific macroscopic quantity as a function of time, contains sufficient information to recover the tumbling kernel and its associated damping coefficient. Moreover, we can read off the chemotaxis tumbling kernel using the values of population density directly from this specific experimental design. This theoretical result using kinetic theory sheds light on how practitioners may conduct experiments in laboratories.

A well-balanced second order finite volume central scheme for the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations with gravitational source term is developed in this paper. The scheme is an unstaggered central scheme that evolves the numerical solution on a single grid and avoids solving Riemann problems at the cell interfaces using ghost staggered cells. A subtraction technique is used on the conservative variables with the support of a known steady state in order to manifest the well-balanced property of the scheme. The divergence-free constraint of the magnetic field is satisfied after applying the constrained transport method (CTM) for unstaggered central schemes at the end of each time-step by correcting the components of the magnetic field. In financial mathematics, it is a typical approach to approximate financial markets operating in discrete time by continuous-time models such as the Black Scholes model. Fitting this model gives rise to difficulties due to the discrete nature of market data. We thus model the pricing process of financial derivatives by the Black Scholes equation, where the volatility is a function of a finite number of random variables. This reflects an influence of uncertain factors when determining volatility. The aim is to quantify the effect of this uncertainty when computing the price of derivatives. Our underlying method is the generalized Polynomial Chaos (gPC) method in order to numerically compute the uncertainty of the solution by the stochastic Galerkin approach and a finite difference method. We present an efficient numerical variation of this method, which is based on a machine learning technique, the so-called Bi-Fidelity approach. This is illustrated with numerical examples.

We consider a kinetic description of a multi-species gas mixture modeled with Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) collision operators, in which the collision frequency varies not only in time and space but also with the microscopic velocity. In this model, the Maxwellians typically used in standard BGK operators are replaced by a generalization of such target functions, which are defined by a variational procedure \cite{arXiv:2101.09047}. In this paper we present a numerical method for simulating this model, which uses an Implicit-Explicit (IMEX) scheme to minimize a certain potential function, mimicking the Lagrange functional that appears in the theoretical derivation. We show that theoretical properties such as conservation of mass, total momentum and total energy as well as positivity of the distribution functions are preserved by the numerical method, and illustrate its usefulness and effectiveness with numerical examples.

In this paper, we establish the existence of the unique global-in-time classical solutions to the multi-component BGK model suggested in \cite{mixmodel} when the initial data is a small perturbation of global equilibrium. For this, we carefully analyze the dissipative nature of the linearized multi-component relaxation operator, and observe that the partial dissipation from the intra-species and the inter-species linearized relaxation operators are combined in a complementary manner to give rise to the desired dissipation estimate of the model We also observe that the convergence rate of the distribution function increases as the momentum-energy interchange rate between the different components of the gas increases.

We present a numerical approximation of the solutions of the Euler equations with a gravitational source term. On the basis of a Suliciu type relaxation model with two relaxation speeds, we construct an approximate Riemann solver, which is used in a first order Godunov-type finite volume scheme. This scheme can preserve both stationary solutions and the low Mach limit to the corresponding incompressible equations. In addition, we prove that our scheme preserves the positivity of density and internal energy, that it is entropy satisfying and also guarantees not to give rise to numerical checkerboard modes in the incompressible limit. Later we give an extension to second order that preserves positivity, asymptotic-preserving and well-balancing properties. Finally, the theoretical properties are investigated in numerical experiments.

Chemotaxis describes the movement of an organism, such as single or multi-cellular organisms and bacteria, in response to a chemical stimulus. Two widely used models to describe the phenomenon are the celebrated Keller-Segel equation and a chemotaxis kinetic equation. These two equations describe the organism movement at the macro- and mesoscopic level respectively, and are asymptotically equivalent in the parabolic regime. How the organism responds to a chemical stimulus is embedded in the diffusion/advection coefficients of the Keller-Segel equation or the turning kernel of the chemotaxis kinetic equation. Experiments are conducted to measure the time dynamics of the organisms' population level movement when reacting to certain stimulation. From this one infers the chemotaxis response, which constitutes an inverse problem. \\ In this paper we discuss the relation between both the macro- and mesoscopic inverse problems, each of which is associated to two different forward models. The discussion is presented in the Bayesian framework, where the posterior distribution of the turning kernel of the organism population is sought after. We prove the asymptotic equivalence of the two posterior distributions.

We consider the Euler system of gas dynamics endowed with the incomplete equation of state relating the internal energy to the mass density and the pressure. We show that any sufficiently smooth solution can be recovered as a vanishing viscosity - heat conductivity limit of the Navier--Stokes--Fourier system with a properly defined temperature. The result is unconditional in the case of the Navier type (slip) boundary conditions and extends to the no-slip condition for the velocity under some extra hypotheses of Kato's type concerning the behavior of the fluid in the boundary layer.

The Active Flux scheme is a Finite Volume scheme with additional point values distributed along the cell boundary. It is third order accurate and does not require a Riemann solver: the continuous reconstruction serves as initial data for the evolution of the points values. The intercell flux is then obtained from the evolved values along the cell boundary by quadrature. This paper focuses on the conceptual extension of Active Flux to include source terms, and thus for simplicity assumes the homogeneous part of the equations to be linear. To a large part, the treatment of the source terms is independent of the choice of the homogeneous part of the system. Additionally, only systems are considered which admit characteristics (instead of characteristic cones). This is the case for scalar equations in any number of spatial dimensions and systems in one spatial dimension. Here, we succeed to extend the Active Flux method to include (possibly nonlinear) source terms while maintaining third order accuracy of the method. This requires a novel (approximate) operator for the evolution of point values and a modified update procedure of the cell average. For linear acoustics with gravity, it is shown how to achieve a well-balanced / stationarity preserving numerical method.

We derive a multi-species BGK model with velocity-dependent collision frequency for a non-reactive, multi-component gas mixture. The model is derived by minimizing a weighted entropy under the constraint that the number of particles of each species, total momentum, and total energy are conserved. We prove that this minimization problem admits a unique solution for very general collision frequencies. Moreover, we prove that the model satisfies an H-Theorem and characterize the form of equilibrium.

In this paper we study the effect of randomness on a linearized BGK-model in one dimension. We prove exponential decay rate to a global equilibrium. This decay rate can be proven to be independent of the stochastic influence in a physical reasonable norm. We will further discuss the decay rate of the $n$-th derivative with respect to the stochastic variable of the solutions. Our strategy is based on Lyapunov's method. The matrices we need for a Lyapunov's estimate now depend on the stochastic variable. This requires a careful analysis of the random effect.

In this paper, we investigate an inverse problem for the radiative transfer equation that is coupled with a heat equation in a nonscattering medium in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 2$. The two equations are coupled through a nonlinear blackbody emission term that is proportional to the fourth power of the temperature. By measuring the radiation intensity on the surface of the blackbody, we prove that the emission property of the system can be uniquely reconstructed. In particular, we design a reconstruction procedure that uses merely one set of experiment setup to fully recover the emission parameter., Comment: 16 pages

We introduce novel high order well-balanced finite volume methods for the full compressible Euler system with gravity source term. They require no a priori knowledge of the hydrostatic solution which is to be well-balanced and are not restricted to certain classes of hydrostatic solutions. In one spatial dimension we construct a method that exactly balances a high order discretization of any hydrostatic state. The method is extended to two spatial dimensions using a local high order approximation of a hydrostatic state in each cell. The proposed simple, flexible, and robust methods are not restricted to a specific equation of state. The acoustic equations derived as a linearization of the Euler equations are a valuable system for studies of multi-dimensional solutions. Additionally they possess a low Mach number limit analogous to that of the Euler equations. Aiming at understanding the behaviour of the multi-dimensional Godunov scheme in this limit, first the exact solution of the corresponding Cauchy problem in three spatial dimensions is derived. The appearance of logarithmic singularities in the exact solution of the 4-quadrant Riemann Problem in two dimensions is discussed. The solution formulae are then used to obtain the multidimensional Godunov finite volume scheme in two dimensions. It is shown to be superior to the dimensionally split upwind/Roe scheme concerning its domain of stability and ability to resolve multi-dimensional Riemann problems. It is shown experimentally and theoretically that despite taking into account multi-dimensional information it is, however, not able to resolve the low Mach number limit.

We propose two novel two-state approximate Riemann solvers for the compressible Euler equations which are provably entropy dissipative and suitable for the simulation of low Mach numbers. What is new, is that one of our two methods in addition is provably kinetic energy stable. Both methods are based on the entropy satisfying and kinetic energy consistent methods of Chandrashekar (2013). The low Mach number compliance is achieved by rescaling some speed of sound terms in the diffusion matrix in the spirit of Li & Gu (2008). In numerical tests we demonstrate the low Mach number compliance and the entropy stability of the proposed fluxes.

The question of (non-)uniqueness of one-dimensional self-similar solutions to the Riemann problem for hyperbolic systems of gas dynamics in sets of multi-dimensional admissible weak solutions was addressed in recent years in several papers culminating in [17] with the proof that the Riemann problem for the isentropic Euler system with a power law pressure is ill-posed if the one-dimensional self-similar solution contains a shock. Natural question then arises whether the same holds also for a more involved system of equations, the full Euler system. After the first step in this direction was made in [1], where the ill-posedness was proved in the case of two shocks appearing in the self-similar solution, we prove in this paper that the presence of just one shock in the self-similar solution implies the same outcome, i.e. the existence of infinitely many admissible weak solutions to the multi-dimensional problem., Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures

We present an implicit-explicit well-balanced finite volume scheme for the Euler equations with a gravitational source term which is able to deal also with low Mach flows. To visualize the different scales we use the non-dimensionalized equations on which we apply a pressure splitting and a Suliciu relaxation. On the resulting model, we apply a splitting of the flux into a linear implicit and an non-linear explicit part that leads to a scale independent time-step. The explicit step consists of a Godunov type method based on an approximative Riemann solver where the source term is included in the flux formulation. We develop the method for a first order scheme and give an extension to second order. Both schemes are designed to be well-balanced, preserve the positivity of density and internal energy and have a scale independent diffusion. We give the low Mach limit equations for well-prepared data and show that the scheme is asymptotic preserving. These properties are numerically validated by various test cases.

We propose a BGK model of the quantum Boltzmann equation for gas mixtures. We also provide a sufficient condition that guarantees the existence of equilibrium coefficients so that the model shares the same conservation laws and $H$-theorem with the quantum Boltzmann equation. Unlike the classical BGK for gas mixtures, the equilibrium coefficinets of the local equilibiriums for quantum multi-species gases are defined through highly nonlinear relations that are not explicitly solvable. We verify in a unified way that such nonlinear relations uniquely determine the equilibrium coefficients under the condition, leading to the well-definedness of our model., Comment: Journal reviewed

We propose an explicit, single step discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method on moving grids using the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approach for one dimensional Euler equations. The grid is moved with the local fluid velocity modified by some smoothing, which is found to considerably reduce the numerical dissipation introduced by Riemann solvers. The scheme preserves constant states for any mesh motion and we also study its positivity preservation property. Local grid refinement and coarsening are performed to maintain the mesh quality and avoid the appearance of very small or large cells. Second, higher order methods are developed and several test cases are provided to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed scheme.

We present an implicit-explicit finite volume scheme for the Euler equations. We start from the non-dimensionalised Euler equations where we split the pressure in a slow and a fast acoustic part. We use a Suliciu type relaxation model which we split in an explicit part, solved using a Godunov-type scheme based on an approximate Riemann solver, and an implicit part where we solve an elliptic equation for the fast pressure. The relaxation source terms are treated projecting the solution on the equilibrium manifold. The proposed scheme is positivity preserving with respect to the density and internal energy and asymptotic preserving towards the incompressible Euler equations. For this first order scheme we give a second order extension which maintains the positivity property. We perform numerical experiments in 1D and 2D to show the applicability of the proposed splitting and give convergence results for the second order extension.

We consider conservation laws with discontinuous flux where the initial datum, the flux function, and the discontinuous spatial dependency coefficient are subject to randomness. We establish a notion of random adapted entropy solutions to these equations and prove well-posedness provided that the spatial dependency coefficient is piecewise constant with finitely many discontinuities. In particular, the setting under consideration allows the flux to change across finitely many points in space whose positions are uncertain. We propose a single- and multilevel Monte Carlo method based on a finite volume approximation for each sample. Our analysis includes convergence rate estimates of the resulting Monte Carlo and multilevel Monte Carlo finite volume methods as well as error versus work rates showing that the multilevel variant outperforms the single-level method in terms of efficiency. We present a new family of very high order accurate direct Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) Finite Volume (FV) and Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes for the solution of nonlinear hyperbolic PDE systems on moving 2D Voronoi meshes that are regenerated at each time step and which explicitly allow topology changes in time. The Voronoi tessellations are obtained from a set of generator points that move with the local fluid velocity. We employ an AREPO-type approach, which rapidly rebuilds a new high quality mesh rearranging the element shapes and neighbors in order to guarantee a robust mesh evolution even for vortex flows and very long simulation times. The old and new Voronoi elements associated to the same generator are connected to construct closed space--time control volumes, whose bottom and top faces may be polygons with a different number of sides. We also incorporate degenerate space--time sliver elements, needed to fill the space--time holes that arise because of topology changes. The final ALE FV-DG scheme is obtained by a redesign of the fully discrete direct ALE schemes of Boscheri and Dumbser, extended here to moving Voronoi meshes and space--time sliver elements. Our new numerical scheme is based on the integration over arbitrary shaped closed space--time control volumes combined with a fully-discrete space--time conservation formulation of the governing PDE system. In this way the discrete solution is conservative and satisfies the GCL by construction. Numerical convergence studies as well as a large set of benchmarks for hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of the proposed method. Our numerical results clearly show that the new combination of very high order schemes with regenerated meshes with topology changes lead to substantial improvements compared to direct ALE methods on conforming meshes.

We introduce a general framework for the construction of well-balanced finite volume methods for hyperbolic balance laws. We use the phrase well-balancing in a broader sense, since our proposed method can be applied to exactly follow any solution of any system of hyperbolic balance laws in multiple spatial dimensions and not only time independent solutions. The solution has to be known a priori, either as an analytical expression or as discrete data. The proposed framework modifies the standard finite volume approach such that the well-balancing property is obtained and in case the method is high order accurate, this is maintained under our modification. We present numerical tests for the compressible Euler equations with and without gravity source term and with different equations of state, and for the equations of compressible ideal magnetohydrodynamics.

In this note we consider the ideal compressible magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) equations in a special two dimensional setting. We show that there exist particular initial data for which one obtains infinitely many entropy-conserving weak solutions by using the convex integration technique. Our result is also true for the isentropic case.

We consider a class of wild initial data to the compressible Euler system that give rise to infinitely many admissible weak solutions via the method of convex integration. We identify the closure of this class in the natural $L^1$-topology and show that its complement is rather large, specifically it is an open dense set., Comment: 20 pages

Finite volume schemes for hyperbolic conservation laws require a numerical intercell flux. In one spatial dimension the numerical flux can be successfully obtained by solving (exactly or approximately) Riemann problems that are introduced at cell interfaces. This is more challenging in multiple spatial dimensions. The active flux scheme is a finite volume scheme that considers continuous reconstructions instead. The intercell flux is obtained using additional degrees of freedom distributed along the cell boundary. For their time evolution an exact evolution operator is employed, which naturally ensures the correct direction of information propagation and provides stability. This paper presents an implementation of active flux for the acoustic equations on two-dimensional Cartesian grids and demonstrates its ability to simulate discontinuous solutions with an explicit time stepping in a stable manner. Additionally, it is shown that the active flux scheme for linear acoustics is low Mach number compliant without the need for any fix.
