We have recently found fundamental differences in the radio properties of red quasars when compared to typical blue quasars. In this paper we use X-shooter data, providing spectral coverage from $\sim 3000-25000$ Ang, of a sample of 40 red and blue luminous quasars at $1.45

A non-negligible fraction of quasars are red at optical wavelengths, indicating (in the majority of cases) that the accretion disc is obscured by a column of dust which extinguishes the shorter-wavelength blue emission. In this paper, we summarize recent work by our group, where we find fundamental differences in the radio properties of SDSS optically-selected red quasars. We also present new analyses, using a consistent color-selected quasar parent sample matched to four radio surveys (FIRST, VLA Stripe 82, VLA COSMOS 3 GHz, and LoTSS DR1) across a frequency range 144 MHz-3 GHz and four orders of magnitude in radio flux. We show that red quasars have enhanced small-scale radio emission (~kpc) that peaks around the radio-quiet threshold (defined as the ratio of 1.4 GHz luminosity to 6 micron luminosity) across the four radio samples. Exploring the potential mechanisms behind this enhancement, we rule out star-formation and propose either small-scale synchrotron jets, frustrated jets, or dusty winds interacting with the interstellar medium; the latter two scenarios would provide a more direct connection between opacity (dust; gas) and the production of the radio emission. Red quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) are a subset of the quasar population with colours consistent with reddening due to intervening dust. Recent work has demonstrated that red QSOs show special radio properties that fundamentally distinguish them from normal blue QSOs, specifically a higher incidence of low-power radio emission (1.4 GHz luminosities L$_{\rm 1.4} \approx 10^{25}$ - $10^{27}$ W Hz$^{-1}$) that is physically compact when imaged by arcsecond-resolution radio surveys such as FIRST. In this work, we present e-MERLIN imaging of a set of intermediate-redshift ($1.0 2$ kpc). We report a statistically significant difference in the incidence of extended kpc-scale emission in red QSOs. From an analysis of the radio size distributions of the sample, we find that the excess radio emission in red QSOs can be attributed to structures that are confined to galaxy scales ($< 10$ kpc), while we confirm previous results that red and normal QSOs have similar incidences of radio jets and lobes on circumgalactic or larger scales ($> 10$ kpc). Fundamental differences in the radio properties of red quasars (QSOs), as compared to blue QSOs, have been recently discovered, positioning them as a potential key population in the evolution of galaxies and black holes across cosmic time. To elucidate their nature, we exploited a rich compilation of photometry and spectroscopic data to model their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from the UV to the FIR and characterise their emission-line properties. Following a systematic comparison approach, we infer the AGN accretion, obscuration, and host galaxy properties in a sample of ~1800 QSOs at 0.21000 km/s) in red QSOs. We find that red QSOs that exhibit evidence for high-velocity winds present a stronger signature of the infrared excess, suggesting a causal connection between reddening and the presence of hot dust in QSO winds. We propose that dusty winds at nuclear scales are potentially the physical ingredient responsible for the colours in red QSOs, as well as a key parameter for the regulation of accretion material in the nucleus., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 22 pages, 16 figures. We have recently used the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-centimeters (FIRST) survey to show that red quasars have fundamentally different radio properties to typical blue quasars: a significant (factor $\sim3$) enhancement in the radio-detection fraction, which arises from systems around the radio-quiet threshold with compact ($<5''$) radio morphologies. To gain greater insight into these physical differences, here we use the DR14 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and more sensitive, higher resolution radio data from the Very Large Array (VLA) Stripe 82 (S82) and VLA-COSMOS 3 GHz (C3GHz) surveys. With the S82 data, we perform morphological analyses at a resolution and depth three times that of the FIRST radio survey, and confirm an enhancement in radio-faint and compact red quasars over typical quasars; we now also find tentative evidence for an enhancement in red quasars with slightly extended radio structures ($16-43$ kpc at $z=1.5$). These analyses are complemented by C3GHz, which is deep enough to detect radio emission from star-formation processes. Red quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) are a subset of the luminous end of the cosmic population of active galactic nuclei (AGN), most of which are reddened by intervening dust along the line-of-sight towards their central engines. In recent work from our team, we developed a systematic technique to select red QSOs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and demonstrated that they have distinctive radio properties using the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimeters (FIRST) radio survey. Here we expand our study using low-frequency radio data from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS). With the improvement in depth that LoTSS offers, we confirm key results: compared to a control sample of normal "blue" QSOs matched in redshift and accretion power, red QSOs have a higher radio detection rate and a higher incidence of compact radio morphologies. For the first time, we also demonstrate that these differences arise primarily in sources of intermediate radio-loudness: radio-intermediate red QSOs are $\times 3$ more common than typical QSOs, but the excess diminishes among the most radio-loud and the most radio-quiet systems in our study. We develop Monte-Carlo simulations to explore whether differences in star formation could explain these results, and conclude that, while star formation is an important source of low-frequency emission among radio-quiet QSOs, a population of AGN-driven compact radio sources is the most likely cause for the distinct low-frequency radio properties of red QSOs. The Fermi-LAT has detected more than 3000 sources in the GeV $\gamma$-ray regime. The majority are extra-galactic and these sources are dominated by blazars. However, $\sim28$ per cent of the sources in Fermi 3LAC are listed as blazar candidates of uncertain type (BCU). Increasing the number of classified Fermi-LAT sources is important for improving our understanding of extra-galactic $\gamma$-ray sources and can be used to search for new very high energy sources. We report on the optical spectroscopy of seven selected unclassified BCU sources during 2014 and 2015 undertaken using the SAAO 1.9-m and Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). Based on the identified spectral lines we have classified three of the sources as FSRQs and the remaining four as BL Lac objects, determining the redshift for four sources., Comment: 9 page, 10 figures, 5 tables. The gamma-ray binary system PSR B1259-63/LS 2883 went through periastron in May 2014. We report on the optical spectroscopic monitoring of the system from 33 d before to 78 d after periastron, undertaken with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). The H{\alpha} and He I ({\lambda}6678) lines exhibit an orbital variation around periastron, with the line strengths reaching a maximum ~13 d after periastron. The line strength is weaker than observed around the previous periastron in 2010. There is also a marked change in the line-strength and asymmetry around the first disc crossing.
