1. Structure, magnetic properties, and cycloidal spin ordering in Nd-doped BiFeO$_3$ synthesized by sol-gel method

Abstract

In this study, the structural and magnetic properties of Nd-doped BiFeO$_3$ materials with the formula Bi$_{1-x}$Nd$_x$FeO$_3$ $(x = 0 - 0.2)$ were investigated. Samples were prepared using the sol-gel method and annealed at 823 K for 4 hours. Microstructural studies indicated that nanomaterials with an average grain size of less than 100 nm were produced, with the smallest grain size observed for the solid solution with $x = 0.15$. Rietveld analysis of diffraction patterns revealed a composition-driven transformation from the rhombohedral $(R3c)$ lattice to the orthorhombic $(Pbam)$ structure. The above finding is correlated to M\"ossbauer spectroscopy data, which demonstrated the gradual destruction of the spin cycloid due to the structural transformation to the $Pbam$ structure. The spectra were analyzed using a complex hyperfine magnetic field distribution model reflecting cycloidal spin ordering. Scanning differential calorimetry revealed that for the investigated materials the magnetic ordering temperatures are close to 640 K, independently from the Nd concentration. Magnetic measurements showed the emergence of weak ferromagnetic properties with increasing Nd ions concentration, consistently with M\"ossbauer spectroscopy data.

2. Localization of macroscopic sources of magnetic field using optical fibers doped with NV-rich sub-micron diamonds and zero-field resonance

Abstract

We employ an optical fiber doped with randomly oriented fluorescent sub-micron diamonds and the novel zero-field resonance protocol to collect information on the localization and orientation of a magnetic-field source and its distribution. Many previous demonstrations of diamond-based magnetic field sensing achieved ultrahigh sensitivities down to the fT range warranted by manipulating spin states of the diamond nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers with externally applied radio or microwaves. The application of such oscillating fields is problematic in distributed magnetic-field measurements and may be incompatible with specific targets. Instead of relying on these approaches, we leveraged cross-relaxations of particular spin-state populations of the NV center under a magnetic field, thus observing zero-field resonances and making external radio frequency fields redundant. Combined with an optical fiber sensitive to the magnetic field along its entire length, remote sensing was realized that returned information on the spatial field distribution without using any moving mechanical elements in the detection system. Variation of the spatial parameters of the investigated field was achieved simply by controlling the current in a pair of induction coils easily integrable with optical fibers without limiting the fiber-specific functionality of the optical readout taking place at a fixed location at the optical fiber output. Lifting of the requirements related to the mechanical scanning of the fiber, the application of external fields, and the orientation of the NV centers against the measured field mark a very practical step forward in optically driven magnetic field sensing, not easily achievable with earlier implementations., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

In this work, we introduce Gemma 2, a new addition to the Gemma family of lightweight, state-of-the-art open models, ranging in scale from 2 billion to 27 billion parameters. In this new version, we apply several known technical modifications to the Transformer architecture, such as interleaving local-global attentions (Beltagy et al., 2020a) and group-query attention (Ainslie et al., 2023). We also train the 2B and 9B models with knowledge distillation (Hinton et al., 2015) instead of next token prediction. The resulting models deliver the best performance for their size, and even offer competitive alternatives to models that are 2-3 times bigger. We release all our models to the community.

5. Quantifying Similarity: Text-Mining Approaches to Evaluate ChatGPT and Google Bard Content in Relation to BioMedical Literature

Abstract

Background: The emergence of generative AI tools, empowered by Large Language Models (LLMs), has shown powerful capabilities in generating content. To date, the assessment of the usefulness of such content, generated by what is known as prompt engineering, has become an interesting research question. Objectives Using the mean of prompt engineering, we assess the similarity and closeness of such contents to real literature produced by scientists. Methods In this exploratory analysis, (1) we prompt-engineer ChatGPT and Google Bard to generate clinical content to be compared with literature counterparts, (2) we assess the similarities of the contents generated by comparing them with counterparts from biomedical literature. Our approach is to use text-mining approaches to compare documents and associated bigrams and to use network analysis to assess the terms' centrality. Results The experiments demonstrated that ChatGPT outperformed Google Bard in cosine document similarity (38% to 34%), Jaccard document similarity (23% to 19%), TF-IDF bigram similarity (47% to 41%), and term network centrality (degree and closeness). We also found new links that emerged in ChatGPT bigram networks that did not exist in literature bigram networks. Conclusions: The obtained similarity results show that ChatGPT outperformed Google Bard in document similarity, bigrams, and degree and closeness centrality. We also observed that ChatGPT offers linkage to terms that are connected in the literature. Abstract

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract

We report a near two-octave spanning supercontinuum (SC) from 790 nm to 2900 nm in a nanostructured tellurite graded-index multimode fiber with a nanostructured core. We study the SC dynamics in different dispersion regimes and observe near-single mode spatial intensity distribution at high input energy values. Numerical simulations of the (3+1)D generalized nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation are in good agreement with our experiments. Our results open a new avenue for the generation of high-power mid-infrared SC sources in soft glass fibers., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract The exposure to aversive experiences during early-life affects brain maturation and induces changes in behavior. Additionally, when these experiences coincide with subtle neurodevelopmental alterations, they may contribute to the emergence of psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia. Studies in patients and animal models have identified changes in parvalbumin (PV) expressing inhibitory neurons, highlighting their significance in the etiology of this disorder. Most studies have been focused on the cortex, but PV+ neurons also provide inhibitory input to diencephalic regions, particularly to the thalamus (through cells in the thalamic reticular nucleus, TRN) and the habenula. Remarkably, alterations in both nuclei have been described in schizophrenia. Some of these changes in PV+ cells may be mediated by perineuronal nets (PNN), specialized regions of the extracellular matrix that often surround them and regulate their synaptic input and activity. Interestingly, the physiological maturation and integration of PV+ neurons, which involves the assembly of PNN, occurs during early postnatal life. Plasticity molecules associated to inhibitory neurons, such as PSA-NCAM, or NMDA receptors (NMDAR) can also influence the structure and function of these cells. Growing evidence also indicates that glial cells regulate the physiology of PV+ neurons by influencing their maturation and modulating their synaptic connectivity. To explore the impact of early-life aversive experiences and concomitant subtle neurodevelopmental alterations on diencephalic PV+ cells, we analyzed adult male mice subjected to a double-hit model (DHM) of schizophrenia, combining a single injection of an NMDAR antagonist at P7 and post-weaning social isolation. We observed that exploratory behavior, PV+ neurons and their associated PNN, as well as PSA-NCAM and NMDAR expression and glial cells, in the TRN and the habenula were affected by the DHM or one of its factors. To our knowledge, this is the first report on such alterations in these diencephalic structures in an animal model combining neurodevelopmental alterations and early-life stress during adolescence. Our findings complement previous work on PV+ neurons in cortical regions and underscore the importance of studying diencephalic inhibitory networks and their intricate interactions with aversive experiences and neurodevelopmental alterations during early life in the context of schizophrenia.

Abstract

We propose a novel multimodal video benchmark - the Perception Test - to evaluate the perception and reasoning skills of pre-trained multimodal models (e.g. Flamingo, SeViLA, or GPT-4). Compared to existing benchmarks that focus on computational tasks (e.g. classification, detection or tracking), the Perception Test focuses on skills (Memory, Abstraction, Physics, Semantics) and types of reasoning (descriptive, explanatory, predictive, counterfactual) across video, audio, and text modalities, to provide a comprehensive and efficient evaluation tool. The benchmark probes pre-trained models for their transfer capabilities, in a zero-shot / few-shot or limited finetuning regime. For these purposes, the Perception Test introduces 11.6k real-world videos, 23s average length, designed to show perceptually interesting situations, filmed by around 100 participants worldwide. The videos are densely annotated with six types of labels (multiple-choice and grounded video question-answers, object and point tracks, temporal action and sound segments), enabling both language and non-language evaluations. The fine-tuning and validation splits of the benchmark are publicly available (CC-BY license), in addition to a challenge server with a held-out test split. Human baseline results compared to state-of-the-art video QA models show a substantial gap in performance (91.4% vs 46.2%), suggesting that there is significant room for improvement in multimodal video understanding. Abstract Background Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is an acquired hematopoietic stem cell disorder characterized by PIG-A mutations, leading to glycophosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored proteins deficiency that triggers hemolysis – a hallmark of the disease. PNH diagnostics is based on high-sensitivity multicolor flow cytometry (MFC), enabling to detect even small populations of PNH cells. In this single-center, retrospective study, we aimed to characterize a cohort of PNH clone-positive patients first time screened from January 1st, 2013 until December 31st, 2022 with MFC according to International Clinical Cytometry Society PNH Consensus Guidelines. Results Out of 2790 first-time screened individuals, the presence of PNH clone in neutrophils was detected in 322 patients, including 49 children and 273 adults. Annual incidence was stable at a median of 31 patients (14 and 19 with clone sizes ≤ 1% and > 1%, respectively), with a decline in number of patients with clone sizes > 1% observed in 2020, potentially influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. The most common screening indications were aplastic anemia and other cytopenias. Conclusions A significant underrepresentation of hemolytic patients was observed as compared to the published cohorts suggesting that these patients are missed in diagnostic process and classic PNH remains underdiagnosed in Poland.

Abstract

Fermented beverages such as beer are known for their relatively long shelf life. However, the main factor limiting their shelf life is the qualitative changes that occur during storage. From the moment the beer is produced, its characteristics, such as taste, aroma, and colloidal stability undergo continuous change. The intensity of these changes depends on the type of beer, storage conditions, and length of storage. While some degree of ageing can have a positive influence on sensory characteristics of a beer, beer stalling is seen as a significant problem. As it is currently understood, beer ageing is mainly caused by the formation of stalling aldehydes. At the same time, compounds which bestow the beer its flavour, such as esters, terpenes, and iso-α-acids undergo qualitative and quantitative changes. As a result, aroma discriminants such as freshness, fruitiness or florality are often lost over time. In their place, aromas described as ribes, cardboard, bread-like, honey-like or sherry-like appear. The article aims to present the changes in beer sensorial, physicochemical, and microbiological characteristics during storage and the factors that affect beer quality during ageing The article also describes the variables which according to the current literature, may alter the flavour stability of a beer.

Abstract

Adverse experiences during infancy and adolescence have an important and enduring effect on the brain and are predisposing factors for mental disorders, particularly major depression. This impact is particularly notable in regions with protracted development, such as the prefrontal cortex. The inhibitory neurons of this cortical region are altered by peripubertal stress (PPS), particularly in female mice. In this study we have explored whether the inhibitory circuits of the thalamus are impacted by PPS in male and female mice. This diencephalic structure, as the prefrontal cortex, also completes its development during postnatal life and is affected by adverse experiences. The long-term changes induced by PPS were exclusively found in adult female mice. We have found that PPS increases depressive-like behavior and induces changes in parvalbumin-expressing (PV+) cells of the thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN). We observed reductions in the volume of the TRN, together with those of parameters related to structures/molecules that regulate the plasticity and connectivity of PV+ cells: perineuronal nets, matricellular structures surrounding PV+ neurons, and the polysialylated form of the neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM). The expression of the GluN1, but not of GluN2C, NMDA receptor subunit was augmented in the TRN after PPS. An increase in the fluorescence intensity of PV+ puncta was also observed in the synaptic output of TRN neurons in the lateral posterior thalamic nucleus. These results demonstrate that the inhibitory circuits of the thalamus, as those of the prefrontal cortex, are vulnerable to the effects of aversive experiences during early life, particularly in females. This vulnerability is probably related to the protracted development of the TRN and might contribute to the development of psychiatric disorders.

Abstract

There is a great deal of scientific interest in characterizing the basaltic asteroids (spectrally classified as V-types), as they are the key to understanding planetesimal formation and evolution in the early Solar System. These have long been recognized as parts of the crusts of fully differentiated planetesimals. Thus, their multiplicity, distribution, and physical characteristics are crucial for providing context for and constraining the theoretical evolution models of the Solar System. In this work, we perform spectral analysis with an extended data set of spectral measurements from the ESA Gaia mission Data Release 3, thus increasing the sample size of the analyzed V-types by more than three times as compared to the literature. Using the data provided by Gaia we identified ~2000 possible V-type asteroids. About 350 of them successfully pass our data validation criteria. This sample includes 31 new V-type asteroids beyond 2.5 au and 6 in the Phocaea region. We confirm that the V-type asteroids in the middle and outer part of the main belt show distinct spectral properties compared to typical vestoids. In the inner main belt, we found a great diversity of spectral parameters among the V-types in all populations. Number of asteroids show band depths even greater than that of (1459) Magnya. Furthermore, some objects present 0.9~\textmu{}m band-centers more than one standard deviation away from the typical value for vestoids. However since the DR3 band centers are often overestimated, those findings are to be confirmed. ABSTRACTThe formation of straight impact crater rims is widely accepted to be influenced by preexisting lithospheric structure. We investigate the distribution and orientations of straight crater rim segments across Mercury. We devise a mapping workflow aimed at minimizing distortions of length and orientation that arise when working on projected image mosaics on a global scale and produce a global map of the rims of 7,145 impact craters with diameters between 20 and 400 km. We extract straight rim segments that maintain consistent orientations for at least 10 km to assess their frequency and orientation. Our dataset shows that 83% of craters have straight rim segments that show strong east–west orientations at the poles and weak north–south or random orientations at lower latitudes. This emphasizes the importance of lithospheric structure for impact cratering on Mercury. Our map dataset provides valuable insights for future investigations into the tectonic evolution of Mercury.

Abstract

Objective: Amiodarone is an iodine-rich molecule and an effective antiarrhythmic drug. It is a first-line treatment for patients with life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias and for prevention in patients at high risk. The use of amiodarone may cause serious adverse effects such as pharmacotherapy-resistant, life-threatening amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT)leading to rapid deterioration of the patient's condition.According to the European Thyroid Association (ETA) guidelines, emergency thyroidectomy is the first-line treatment option in these cases. ; however, is not always feasible in the clinical setting due to the high anesthetic risk.We aimed to assess the clinical course and results of urgent thyroidectomy and 131-I therapy in patients with severe AIT with worsening of cardiac status. Methods: Retrospective analysis of the clinical course and outcomes of life-threatening AIT refractory to pharmacotherapy in patients hospitalized at a tertiary endocrinology center between 2014 and 2022. Results: An electronic database search identified 75 patients hospitalized for severe AIT. At the time of AIT diagnosis, median Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration was 0.001 mIU/L (range 0.001–0.35), fT4 63.2 pmol/L (range 9.0 - >100), and fT3 10.2 pmol/L (range 3.8–49.3). All patients received optimal conservative treatment. Among them, 20 required urgent radical therapy due to worsening arrhythmias and/or AIT-related heart failure. In this group, 6 patients died before any radical treatment was applied, 6 underwent total thyroidectomy, while 8 patients were successfully treated with 131-I (in 6 cases after rhTSH stimulation). The median dose of 131-I used for the therapy was 784MBq (range 627–860). The decision to treat with 131-I despite low but detectable 131-I uptake (median value 6 %) was made in cases of significant contraindications to anesthesia due to refractory ventricular arrhythmias, exacerbation of severe heart failure unresponsive to cardiac treatment, myocardial infarction during AIT course, massive pulmonary embolism. Conclusion: The decision regarding the optimal time and type of radical treatment of AIT refractory to pharmacotherapy is critical for patients management and should not be delayed. Urgent therapy with 131-I may be an effective therapeutic option in patients who are unsuitable for thyroidectomy due to the high risk of anesthesia.

Abstract

This paper presents a technique for sentiment measurement in many languages. The method allows researchers to efficiently analyze corporate documents, management reports, and financial statements using python. When the texts are written in many languages, the method extracts equivalent cross-linguistic sentiment features that can be used for statistical analysis or machine learning. We use Open Multilingual WordNet, a large lexicon organizing words into semantic groups, as the knowledge base about word equivalence in more than 200 languages. We experiment with a parallel English-French corpus and find that our senitment measures across the two languages are comparable. The method produces a consistent classification of positive and negative texts in two languages, and sentiment measure values correlate. We propose a novel methodology for estimating the epidemiological parameters of a modified SIRD model (acronym of Susceptible, Infected, Recovered and Deceased individuals) and perform a short-term forecast of SARS-CoV-2 virus spread. Intensity fluctuations in supercontinuum generation are studied in polarization-maintaining (PM) and non-PM all-normal dispersion tellurite photonic crystal fibers. Abstract

Due to ongoing climate change, the need for the application of adaptive strategies in agriculture is increasing, particularly in areas with insufficient rainfall, high temperatures and weather fluctuations during the vegetation period. Therefore, an experiment was conducted in 2020 and 2021 to determine the influence of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) on morphological, physiological and production traits of maize. SAPs were applied using a method of seed coating, which is considered cost-effective and environmentally friendly. Due to the impact of SAPs, significantly larger weights of leaves and roots, as well as the length of roots in the initial growth stage, were found. Furthermore, the SAP treatment condition found significantly larger values of leaf relative water content and spectral indexes PRI (photochemical reflectance index) and NDVI (normalised difference vegetation index). Applying SAPs also led to a significant increase in spikes per plot and grain yield of maize. Moreover, the results significantly impact the interaction between year and treatment. The correlation analysis indicates a higher correlation between the observed traits in the SAPs treatment condition, which subsequently impacted the final maize production. These results confirm that applying SAPs can be considered a suitable strategy for mitigating the impacts of adverse weather conditions, especially in terms of sustainability and maintaining maize production.

In recent years, demand for low-alcohol and alcohol-free beers has been rising. Of the many methods of producing such beers, many have expensive implementation requirements or drawbacks in terms of beer quality. The exploration of non-Saccharomyces yeast species presents a promising opportunity to overcome these challenges. These yeasts, with their diverse metabolic capabilities and unique flavor profiles, offer the potential to create innovative and flavorful low-alcohol beers. The study investigates the feasibility of using selected non-Saccharomyces yeasts for brewing low-alcohol beers, focusing on fermentation kinetics, physicochemical parameters, and the sensory attributes of the final product. The evaluated yeast species were Kluyveromyces lactis MG971263, Metschnikowia pulcherrima MG971247 and MG971250, Torulaspora delbrueckii MG971248, Wickerhamomyces anomalus MG971261, and W. onychis MG971246. Two strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were used as a control. The results of the study show that selected non-Saccharomyces yeast species might be used to produce low-alcohol beers. The non-Saccharomyces yeast allowed the researchers to obtain beers with an alcohol content in the range of 0.5–1.05%, while the control beer brewed with US-05 had an alcohol content of 3.77%. Among the evaluated strains, the strains M. pulcherrima MG971250 and T. delbrueckii MG971248 were found to be rated better in a sensory evaluation than the brewed and low-alcohol strains of S. cerevisiae.

The physics and applications of fiber-based supercontinuum (SC) sources have been a subject of intense interest over the last decade, with significant impact on both basic science and industry. New uses for SC sources are also constantly emerging due to their unique properties that combine high brightness, multi-octave frequency bandwidth, fiber delivery, and single-mode output. The last few years have seen significant research efforts focused on extending the wavelength coverage of SC sources towards the 2 to 20 $\mu$m molecular fingerprint mid-infrared (MIR) region and in the ultraviolet (UV) down to 100 nm, while also improving stability, noise and coherence, output power, and polarization properties. We present the results of work on a hybrid material composed of a tellurite glass rod doped with nanodiamonds containing nitrogen-vacancy-nitrogen and paramagnetic nitrogen-vacancy color centers. The reported results include details on tellurite glass and cane fabrication, confocal and wide-field imaging of the nanodiamond distribution in their volume, as well as on the spectroscopic characterization of their fluorescence and Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance measurements of magnetic fields and temperatures. Magnetic fields up to 50 G were examined with a sensitivity of 10$^{-5}$ T Hz$^{-1/2}$ whereas temperature measurements were simultaneously performed with a sensitivity of 74 kHz K$^{-1}$ within the 8 Kelvin range at room temperature. In that way, we demonstrate the suitability of such systems for fiber magneto- and thermometry with a reasonable performance already in the form of glass rods. Abstract

Integration of optically-active nanodiamonds with glass fibers is a powerful method of scaling of diamond magnetic sensing functionality. We propose a novel approach for integration of nanodiamonds containing nitrogen-vacancy centers directly into the fiber core. The core is fabricated using nanostructurization, that is by stacking the preform from 790 soft glass canes, drawn from a single rod dip-coated with nanodiamonds suspended in isopropyl alcohol. This enables manual control over distribution of nanoscale features, here - the nanodiamonds across and along the fiber core. We verify this by mapping the nanodiamond distribution in the core using confocal microscopy. The nanodiamonds are separated longitudinally either by 15 microns or 24 microns, while in the transverse plane separation of approximately 1 micron is observed, corresponding to the individual cane diameter in the final fiber, without significant agglomeration. Filtered, red fluorescence is observed with naked eye uniformly along the fiber. Its magnetic sensitivity is confirmed by in optically detected magnetic resonance recorded with a coiled, 60-cm-long fiber sample with readout contrast limited mainly by microwave antenna coverage. NV fluorescence intensity in 0 to 35 mT magnetic field is also demonstrated, allowing magnetometry applications with a large B-field dynamic range in absence of microwaves., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The generation of a two-octave supercontinuum from the visible to mid-infrared (700 - 2800 nm) in a non-silica graded-index multimode fiber is reported. The fiber design is based on a nanostructured core comprised of two types of drawn lead-bismuth-gallate glass rods with different refractive indices. This structure yields an effective parabolic index profile, an extended transmission window, and ten times increased nonlinearity when compared to silica fibers. Using femtosecond pulse pumping at wavelengths in both normal and anomalous dispersion regimes, a detailed study is carried out into the supercontinuum generating mechanisms and instabilities seeded by periodic self imaging. Significantly, suitable injection conditions in the high power regime are found to result in the output beam profile showing clear signatures of beam self-cleaning from nonlinear mode mixing. Experimental observations are interpreted using spatio-temporal 3+1D numerical simulations of the generalized nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, and simulated spectra are in excellent agreement with experiment over the full two-octave spectral bandwidth. These results demonstrate a new pathway towards the generation of bright, ultrabroadband light sources in the mid-infrared.

The compounds of particular importance in the care of atopic skin include ceramides, ectoine, hyaluronic acid, vitamins A and E, as well as natural vegetable oils. The aim of this work was to develop a qualitative and quantitative approach and to investigate the characteristics of formulations such as a face cream, a topical cream, a body lotion, and a cleansing foam, dedicated to patients with atopic dermatitis. The newly developed cosmetic formulations showed good physical and chemical characteristics, typical of this type of product. They were also structurally and microbiologically stable during storage at various temperatures. Dermatological tests did not reveal any irritating or allergenic properties. The best data were obtained for the face cream, namely improvement of skin hydration by 21.88%, reduction of transepidermal water loss by 15.86%, alleviation of erythema by 15.77%, and of skin sensitivity by 17.20%. This work resulted in the preparation of innovative dermocosmetics to be used for atopic skin. The cosmetics have a unique composition and delicate formula, show high biofunctionality, and meet all the requirements for cosmetic products intended for marketing.

Abstract

Objectives To assess dietary supplements, functional foods and nutraceuticals use among the patients after myocardial infarction (MI). Material and Methods The authors prospectively enrolled 100 consecutive patients hospitalized due to MI and remaining under coordinated outpatient care after MI in the authors’ cardiology department. Results The authors showed that patients within median (interquartile range) 12.30 (10.18–14.57) months after MI use dietary supplements, nutraceuticals and functional foods in their everyday diet. Vitamins (53% patients), especially vitamin D (35%), were the most frequently used dietary supplements. In contrary to common usage of dietary supplements (59%), smaller proportion of patients use functional foods (21%) and nutraceuticals (5%), especially phytosterols. Abstract

Among many methods to produce low/no-alcohol beers, using special yeasts has gained a substantial interest in the brewing industry. This approach relies on the fact that many non-Saccharomyces yeasts do not utilize maltose, which is the main sugar found in brewer’s wort. Additionally, these yeasts may allow the production of a beer with unique sensory characteristics. The aim of the study was to evaluate the potential of 18 non-Saccharomyces yeast strains in the production of low-alcohol beer. As a control strain, S. cerevisiae US-05 was used. The study consisted of two parts: microbiological evaluation and small-scale fermentations. In the microbiological part, ability to ferment sugars found in a wort, resistance to stress factors, phenolic off-flavor production, and enzymatic activities of β-glucosidase and β-lyase were evaluated. In the second part of the study, yeasts were used to produce a beer from 9.3 °Plato wort. During the fermentation, its dynamics was analyzed. The obtained beers were analyzed regarding their alcohol content, pH, acidity, and color. All of the evaluated strains produced low levels of alcohol. Two of the evaluated strains were characterized by especially high β-glucosidase activity. Based on the obtained results, six of the evaluated strains are promising in brewing.

Abstract

This article discusses fundamental issues associated with the functional reliability of selected fire alarm systems (FASs) in operation during building fires. FASs operate under diverse external or internal natural environmental conditions, and the operational process of FAS should take into account the impacts of physical phenomena that occur during fires. Their operation is associated with the constant provision of reliability. FAS designers should also consider the system’s reliability when developing fire control matrices, tables, algorithms, or scenarios. All functions arising from an FAS control matrix should be implemented with a permissible reliability level, RDPN(t), prior to, as well as during, a fire. This should be assigned to the controls saved in the fire alarm control unit (FCP). This article presents the process by which high temperatures generated during a fire impact the reliability of FAS functioning. It was developed considering selected critical paths for a specific scenario and the control matrix for an FAS. Such assumptions make it possible to determine the impact of various temperatures generated during a fire on the reliability of an FAS. To this end, the authors reviewed that the waveform of the R(t) function changes for a given FAS over time, Δt, and then determined the fitness paths. The critical paths are located within the fire detection and suppression activation process, using FAS or fixed extinguishing devices (FEDs), and the paths were modeled with acceptable and unacceptable technical states. The last section of this article defines a model and graph for the operational process of a selected FAS, the analysis of which enables conclusions to be drawn that can be employed in the design and implementation stages.

Abstract

This paper presents the basic assumptions of the concept of a new technology for the valorisation of chromium tannery waste. It assumes the use of an integrated system of the thermal pressure hydrolysis process and membrane filtration techniques for the recovery of chromium compounds and the use of a separated organic matter during anaerobic fermentation. According to the assumptions of the developed technological concept, at the first stage, the crushed mixture of chromium tannery waste is decomposed in the process of thermal pressure hydrolysis using appropriate process conditions in an alkaline environment. Then, the liquid product of this process (the so-called hydrolysate) is processed using centrifugal force separation and ultrafiltration. Such activities enable the recovery of chromium compounds for rawhide currying and concentration of organic matter (fats, proteins) with energy potential. Research carried out under conditions similar to real operating conditions proved that chromium compounds recovered from waste can be successfully used in the processing of cowhides intended for the production of footwear. The industrial implementation of the developed technology for valorising chromium tannery waste would enable the transition from a linear to a circular economy.
