Abstract

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant disease affecting neurons predominantly in the striatum due to the production of the toxic huntingtin protein. Lowering the concentration of mutant huntingtin is a promising therapeutic approach, and a suitable delivery system is fascinating. Nanoparticles (NPs) minimize the host immune response and have no limit concerning the number of NPs administered. They are safe, targeted, and effective for RNA therapeutics providing a significant mode to cross the blood–brain barrier for a broad range of clinical applications. The present study generated and characterized magnetic NPs (MNPs) using the co-precipitation method with a mean particle size of around 10–20 nm. The dynamic light scattering and zeta potential measurements showed that NPs exhibited narrow size distribution and sufficient colloidal stability. These oleic acid-coated MNPs were further cross-linked with polyethyleneimine and designed to deliver interfering RNA into human embryonic kidney cells (HEK-293) driven by an external magnetic field. These MNPs showed low cytotoxicity with high transfection efficiency. Furthermore, a transient downregulation was observed in endogenous huntingtin protein obtained by RT-PCR and Western blot analysis. Thus, these MNPs may represent a promising and efficient platform for siRNA delivery and provide a potential treatment strategy for HD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Recent identification of the highly transmissible novel SARS-CoV-2 variant in the United Kingdom (B.1.1.7) has raised concerns for renewed pandemic surges worldwide 1,2. B.1.1.7 was first identified in the US on December 29, 2020 and may become dominant by March 2021 3. However, the regional prevalence of B.1.1.7 is largely unknown because of limited molecular surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 4. Quantitative PCR data from a surveillance testing program on a large university campus with roughly 30,000 students provides local situational awareness at a pivotal moment in the COVID-19 pandemic.

16. Analytical investigation of an induction motor fed from four-switch VSI with a new space vector modulation strategy

Abstract

In this paper, an analytical model with a new spacevector modulation strategy for a four-switch (B4), inverter feeding an induction motor drive is derived. The proposed modulation strategy for the B4 operation has the same symmetry as in a classical B6 inverter. The analysis is based on a novel space-vector decomposition technique. The analytical results of the machine are accomplished in an [alpha][beta] complex plane by space vector decomposition and by using a mixed p-z approach. As shown, good agreement exists between the analytically calculated waveforms and the experimentally determined ones. Therefore, the proposed analytical model becomes a very useful method for motor investigation under unbalanced as well as balanced supply conditions. Abstract

Transmission electron microscopy was combined with densitometric image analysis to develop a new method for measuring the dry weight of individual, natural bacteria. The new approach was used to quantify the dry weight as well as the cell volume of Escherichia coli and bacterial populations of two lakes. It was found that the dry weight of the E. coli cells was between 83 to 1,172 femtograms, while volume was between 0.1 to 3.5 cubic micrometers. A functional allometric relationship between the dry weight and volume of bacteria was also found.

Abstract

32nd European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 1931-1935, This paper deals with the possibility of automated detection of defective solar modules by thermovision camera mounted on a dron or on the car roof. During thermovision imaging analysis of large photovoltaic power plants there are captured large numbers of images. These images are analyzed by human operators. Given the vast amount of images, which are sometimes very similar, and given of the specificity of some defects, the work of operators can be replaced by the automation recognizing of anomalies software. Two methods for the automatic detection of defects in thermal imaging pictures were developed and validated. First one method is based on the geometric information of tested modules and on the assumption that defective cell has an increased temperature along its whole surface and therefore will appear as a regular geometric shape which is recognizable by geometric comparisons. The second method does recognition by usage of trained artificial neural network.
