Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and high-resolution core level spectroscopy (HRCLS) are used to determine the reduction of the surface oxide on Rh(111) by [H.sub.2]. The parameters obtained from microscopic STM measurements have agreed well with spatially averaged data from HRCLS measurements.

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic was largely driven by genetic mutations of SARS-CoV-2, leading in some instances to enhanced infectiousness of the virus or its capacity to evade the host immune system. To closely monitor SARS-CoV-2 evolution and resulting variants at genomic-level, an innovative pipeline termed SARSeq was developed in Austria.AimWe discuss technical aspects of the SARSeq pipeline, describe its performance and present noteworthy results it enabled during the pandemic in Austria.MethodsThe SARSeq pipeline was set up as a collaboration between private and public clinical diagnostic laboratories, a public health agency, and an academic institution. Representative SARS-CoV-2 positive specimens from each of the nine Austrian provinces were obtained from SARS-CoV-2 testing laboratories and processed centrally in an academic setting for S-gene sequencing and analysis.ResultsSARS-CoV-2 sequences from up to 2,880 cases weekly resulted in 222,784 characterised case samples in January 2021-March 2023. Consequently, Austria delivered the fourth densest genomic surveillance worldwide in a very resource-efficient manner. While most SARS-CoV-2 variants during the study showed comparable kinetic behaviour in all of Austria, some, like Beta, had a more focused spread. This highlighted multifaceted aspects of local population-level acquired immunity. The nationwide surveillance system enabled reliable nowcasting. Measured early growth kinetics of variants were predictive of later incidence peaks.ConclusionWith low automation, labour, and cost requirements, SARSeq is adaptable to monitor other pathogens and advantageous even for resource-limited countries. This multiplexed genomic surveillance system has potential as a rapid response tool for future emerging threats.

Background: The treatment of larger osteochondral lesions of the talus remains an operative challenge. In addition to micro fracturing and osteochondral transplantation one promising strategy could be the operative repair with a cell-free multilayered nano-composite scaffold with the potential to regenerate bone and cartilage in one treatment., Methods: In this prospective case series four consecutive patients who suffered from a single osteochondral lesion (≥1.5cm 2 ) on the medial talus were enrolled. The repair potential of the implant was assessed using MRI based biochemical, compositional MR sequences (T2 mapping) as well as semi-quantitative morphological analyses (MOCART score) at 18 months follow-up after the surgery. The clinical outcome was determined at 6-, 12-, 18-, and 24 months follow-up by using the Ankle Disability Index and the AOFAS score., Results: At 18 months after the surgery, the clinical outcome was significantly improved compared to the preoperative baseline. Global T2 relaxation times of the repair tissue were significantly increased compared to the healthy control cartilage., Conclusions: Osteochondral repair with a cell-free, biomimetic scaffold provides good clinical, short-term results. However, biochemical MR imaging provides strong evidence for limited repair tissue quality at 18 months after the implantation., Level of Evidence: IV., (Copyright © 2016 European Foot and Ankle Society. The structure of the oxygen-induced p(4 x 4) reconstruction of Ag(111) is determined by a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy, surface x-ray diffraction, core level spectroscopy, and density functional theory. We demonstrate that all previous models of this surface structure are incorrect and propose a new model which is able to explain all our experimental findings but has no resemblance to bulk silver oxide. We also shed some light on the limitations of current density functional theories and the potential role of van der Waals interactions in the stabilization of oxygen-induced surface reconstructions of noble metals.

Using core-level spectroscopy and density functional theory we show that a one-dimensional (1D) oxide structure forms at the steps of the Pt(332) surface after exposure. The 1D oxide is found to be stable in an oxygen pressure range, where bulk oxides are only metastable, and is therefore argued to be a precursor to the Pt oxidation. As an example of the consequences of such a precursor exclusively present at the steps, we investigate the reaction of CO with oxygen covered Pt(332). Albeit more strongly bound, the oxidic oxygen is found to react more easily with CO than oxygen chemisorbed on the Pt terraces.
