Search

Planets have been detected in circumbinary orbits in several different systems, despite the additional challenges faced during their formation in such an environment. We investigate the possibility of planetary formation in the spectroscopic binary CS Cha by analyzing its circumbinary disk. The system was studied with high angular resolution ALMA observations at 0.87mm. Visibilities modeling and Keplerian fitting are used to constrain the physical properties of CS Cha, and the observations were compared to hydrodynamic simulations. Our observations are able to resolve the disk cavity in the dust continuum emission and the 12CO J:3-2 transition. We find the dust continuum disk to be azimuthally axisymmetric (less than 9% of intensity variation along the ring) and of low eccentricity (of 0.039 at the peak brightness of the ring). Under certain conditions, low eccentricities can be achieved in simulated disks without the need of a planet, however, the combination of low eccentricity and axisymmetry is consistent with the presence of a Saturn-like planet orbiting near the edge of the cavity., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, accepted in A&A. In this chapter of the Protostars and Planets VII, we review the breakthrough progress that has been made in the field of high-resolution, high-contrast optical and near-infrared imaging of planet-forming disks. These advancements include the direct detection of protoplanets embedded in some disks, and derived limits on planetary masses in others. Morphological substructures, including: rings, spirals, arcs, and shadows, are seen in all imaged infrared-bright disks to date, and are ubiquitous across spectral types. These substructures are believed to be the result of disk evolution processes, and in particular disk-planet interactions. Since small dust grains that scatter light are tightly bound to the disk's gas, these observations closely trace disk structures predicted by hydrodynamical models and serve as observational tests of the predictions of planet formation theories. Recent observations found close-in planets with significant atmospheres of hydrogen and helium in great abundance. These are the so-called super-Earths and mini-Neptunes. Their atmospheric composition suggests that they formed early during the gas-rich phase of the circumstellar disk and were able to avoid becoming hot Jupiters. As a possible explanation, recent studies explored the recycling hypothesis and showed that atmosphere-disk recycling is able to fully compensate for radiative cooling and thereby halt Kelvin-Helmholtz contraction to prevent runaway gas accretion. To understand the parameters that determine the efficiency of atmospheric recycling, we extend our earlier studies by exploring the effects of the core mass, the effect of circumstellar gas on sub-Keplerian orbits (headwind), and the optical depth of the surrounding gas on the recycling timescale. Additionally, we analyze their effects on the size and mass of the forming atmosphere. For the explored parameter space, all simulations eventually reach an equilibrium where heating due to hydrodynamic recycling fully compensates radiative cooling. In this equilibrium, the atmosphere-to-core mass ratio stays well below $10 \, \%$, preventing the atmosphere from becoming self-gravitating and entering runaway gas accretion. Higher core masses cause the atmosphere to become turbulent, which further enhances recycling. Even for our highest core mass of $10 \, M_\mathrm{Earth}$, atmosphere-disk recycling is efficient enough to fully compensate for radiative cooling and prevent the atmosphere from becoming self-gravitating. Hence, in-situ formation of hot Jupiters is very unlikely, and migration of gas giants is a key process required to explain their existence. Context. The orbital distribution of exoplanets indicates an accumulation of super-Earth sized planets close to their host stars in compact systems. When an inward disc-driven migration scenario is assumed for their formation, these planets could have been stopped and might have been parked at an inner edge of the disc, or be pushed through the inner disc cavity by a resonant chain. This topic has not been properly and extensively studied. Using numerical simulations, we investigate the possibility that the inner planets in a resonant chain can be pushed into the disc inner cavity by outer planets. We performed hydrodynamical and N-body simulations of planetary systems embedded in their nascent disc. The inner edge of the disc was represented in two different ways, resembling either a dead zone inner edge (DZ) or a disc inner boundary (IB). The main difference lies in the steepness of the surface density profile. The innermost planet always has a mass of 10 M Earth , with additional outer planets of equal or higher mass. A steeper profile is able to stop a chain of planets more efficiently than a shallower profile. The final configurations in our DZ models are usually tighter than in their IB counterparts, and therefore more prone to instability. We derive analytical expressions for the stopping conditions based on power equilibrium, and show that the final eccentricities result from torque equilibrium. For planets in thinner discs, we found, for the first time, clear signs for over-stable librations in the hydrodynamical simulations, leading to very compact systems. In recent years, space missions such as Kepler and TESS have discovered many close-in planets with significant atmospheres consisting of hydrogen and helium: mini-Neptunes. This indicates that these planets formed early in gas-rich disks while avoiding the runaway gas accretion that would otherwise have turned them into hot-Jupiters. A solution is to invoke a long Kelvin-Helmholtz contraction (or cooling) timescale, but it has also been suggested that thermodynamical cooling can be prevented by hydrodynamical planet atmosphere-disk recycling. We investigate the efficacy of the recycling hypothesis in preventing the collapse of the atmosphere, check for the existence of a steady state configuration, and determine the final atmospheric mass to core mass ratio. We use three-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamic simulations to model the formation of planetary proto-atmospheres. Equations are solved in a local frame centered on the planet. Ignoring small oscillations that average to zero over time, the simulations converge to a steady state where the velocity field of the gas becomes constant in time. In a steady state, the energy loss by radiative cooling is fully compensated by the recycling of the low entropy gas in the planetary atmosphere with high entropy gas from the circumstellar disk. For close-in planets, recycling naturally halts the cooling of planetary proto-atmospheres, preventing them from contracting toward the runaway regime and collapsing into gas giants., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted to A&A

Gravitational instabilities can drive small-scale turbulence and large-scale spiral arms in massive gaseous disks under conditions of slow radiative cooling. These motions affect the observed disk morphology, its mass accretion rate and variability, and could control the process of planet formation via dust grain concentration, processing, and collisional fragmentation. We study gravito-turbulence and its associated spiral structure in thin gaseous disks subject to a prescribed cooling law. We characterize the morphology, coherence, and propagation of the spirals and examine when the flow deviates from viscous disk models. We used the finite-volume code Pluto to integrate the equations of self-gravitating hydrodynamics in three-dimensional spherical geometry. The gas was cooled over longer-than-orbital timescales to trigger the gravitational instability and sustain turbulence. We ran models for various disk masses and cooling rates. In all cases considered, the turbulent gravitational stress transports angular momentum outward at a rate compatible with viscous disk theory. The dissipation of orbital energy happens via shocks in spiral density wakes, heating the disk back to a marginally stable thermal equilibrium. These wakes drive vertical motions and contribute to mix material from the disk with its corona. They are formed and destroyed intermittently, and they nearly corotate with the gas at every radius. As a consequence, large-scale spiral arms exhibit no long-term global coherence, and energy thermalization is an essentially local process. In the absence of radial substructures or tidal forcing, and provided a local cooling law, gravito-turbulence reduces to a local phenomenon in thin gaseous disks., Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures; accepted for publication in A&A

Type-II migration of giant planets has a speed proportional to the disc's viscosity for values of the alpha viscosity parameter larger than 1.e-4 . At lower viscosities previous studies, based on 2D simulations have shown that migration can be very chaotic and often characterized by phases of fast migration. The reason is that in low-viscosity discs vortices appear due to the Rossby-wave instability at the edges of the gap opened by the planet. Migration is then determined by vortex-planet interactions. Our aim is to study migration in low viscosity 3D discs. We performed numerical simulations using 2D (including self-gravity) and 3D codes. After selecting disc masses for which self-gravity is not important, 3D simulations without self-gravity can be safely used. In our nominal simulation only numerical viscosity is present. We then performed simulations with prescribed viscosity to assess the threshold below which the new migration processes appear. We show that for alpha viscosity <= 1.e-5 two migration modes are possible which differ from classical Type-II migration, in the sense that they are not proportional to the disc's viscosity. The first occurs when the gap opened by the planet is not very deep. This occurs in 3D simulations and/or when a big vortex forms at the outer edge of the planetary gap, diffusing material into the gap. We call this type of migration "vortex-driven migration". This migration is very slow and cannot continue indefinitely, because eventually the vortex dissolves. The second migration mode occurs when the gap is deep so that the planet's eccentricity grows to a value ~0.2 due to inefficient eccentricity damping by corotation resonances. This second, faster migration mode appears to be typical of 2D models in discs with slower damping of temperature's perturbations., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures

The Kepler space mission discovered about a dozen planets orbiting around binary stars systems. Most of these circumbinary planets lie near their instability boundaries at about 3 to 5 binary separations. Past attempts to match these final locations through an inward migration process were only successful for the Kepler-16 system. Here, we study 10 circumbinary systems and try to match the final parking locations and orbital parameters of the planets with a disc driven migration scenario. We performed 2D locally isothermal hydrodynamical simulations of circumbinary discs with embedded planets and followed their migration evolution using different values for the disc viscosity and aspect ratio. We found that for the six systems with intermediate binary eccentricities ($0.1 \le e_{bin}\le 0.21$) the final planetary orbits matched the observations closely for a single set of disc parameters, specifically a disc viscosity of $\alpha = 10^{-4}$, and an aspect ratio of $H/r \sim 0.04$. For these systems the planet masses were large enough to open at least a partial gap in their discs as they approach the binary, forcing the discs to become circularized and allowing for further migration towards the binary, leading to good agreement with the observed planetary orbital parameters. For systems with very small or large binary eccentricities the match was not as good because the very eccentric discs and large inner cavities in these cases prevented close-in planet migration. In test simulations with higher than observed planet masses better agreement could be found for those systems. The good agreement for 6 out of the 10 modelled systems, where the relative difference between observed and simulated final planet orbit is $\leq 10\%$, strongly supports the idea that planet migration in the disc brought the planets to their present locations.

A large fraction of stars is found to be part of binary or higher-order multiple systems. The ubiquity of planets found around single stars raises the question if and how planets in binary systems may form. Protoplanetary disks are the birthplaces of planets, and their characterization is crucial in order to understand the planet formation process. Our aim is to characterize the morphology of the GG Tau A disk, one of the largest and most massive circumbinary disks, and trace evidence for binary-disk interactions. We obtained observations in polarized scattered light of GG Tau A using the SPHERE/IRDIS instrument in the H-band filter. We analyze the observed disk morphology and substructures. We run 2D hydrodynamical models simulating the evolution of the circumbinary ring over the lifetime of the disk. The disk, as well as the cavity and the inner region are highly structured with several shadowed regions, spiral structures, and streamer-like filaments, some of them detected for the first time. The streamer-like filaments appear to connect the outer ring with the northern arc. Their azimuthal spacing suggests that they may be generated by periodic perturbations by the binary, tearing off material from the inner edge of the outer disk once during each orbit. By comparing observations to hydrodynamical simulations we find that the main features, in particular the gap size, as well as the spiral and streamer filaments, can be qualitatively explained by the gravitational interactions of a binary with semi-major axis of $\sim$35 au on an orbit coplanar with the circumbinary ring., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Hydrodynamical simulations of planet-disk interactions suggest that planets may be responsible for a number of the sub-structures frequently observed in disks in both scattered light and dust thermal emission. Despite the ubiquity of these features, direct evidence of planets embedded in disks and of the specific interaction features like spiral arms within planetary gaps still remain rare. In this study we discuss recent observational results in the context of hydrodynamical simulations in order to infer the properties of a putative embedded planet in the cavity of a transition disk. We imaged the transition disk SR 21 in H-band in scattered light with SPHERE/IRDIS and in thermal dust emission with ALMA band 3 (3mm) observations at a spatial resolution of 0.1". We combine these datasets with existing band 9 (430um) and band 7 (870um) ALMA continuum data. The Band 3 continuum data reveals a large cavity and a bright ring peaking at 53 au strongly suggestive of dust trapping.The ring shows a pronounced azimuthal asymmetry, with a bright region in the north-west that we interpret as a dust over-density. A similarly-asymmetric ring is revealed at the same location in polarized scattered light, in addition to a set of bright spirals inside the mm cavity and a fainter spiral bridging the gap to the outer ring. These features are consistent with a number of previous hydrodynamical models of planet-disk interactions, and suggest the presence of a ~1 MJup planet at 44 au and PA=11{\deg}. This makes SR21 the first disk showing spiral arms inside the mm cavity, as well as one for which the location of a putative planet can be precisely inferred. With the location of a possible planet being well-constrained by observations, it is an ideal candidate for follow-up observations to search for direct evidence of a planetary companion still embedded in its disk., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The most accurate method for modelling planetary migration and hence the formation of resonant systems is using hydrodynamical simulations. Usually, the force (torque) acting on a planet is calculated using the forces from the gas disc and the star, while the gas accelerations are computed using the pressure gradient, the star, and the planet's gravity, ignoring its own gravity. For the non-migrating the neglect of the disc gravity results in a consistent torque calculation while for the migrating case it is inconsistent. We aim to study how much this inconsistent torque calculation can affect the final configuration of a two-planet system. Our focus will be on low-mass planets because most of the multi-planetary systems, discovered by the Kepler survey, have masses around 10 Earth masses. Performing hydrodynamical simulations of planet-disc interaction, we measure the torques on non-migrating and migrating planets for various disc masses as well as density and temperature slopes with and without considering the disc self-gravity. Using this data, we find a relation that quantifies the inconsistency, use it in an N-body code, and perform an extended parameter study modelling the migration of a planetary system with different planet mass ratios and disc surface densities, in order to investigate the impact of the torque inconsistency on the architecture of the planetary system. Not considering disc self-gravity produces an artificially larger torque on the migrating planet that can result in tighter planetary systems. The deviation of this torque from the correct value is larger in discs with steeper surface density profiles. Planetary migration is a key link between planet formation models and observed exoplanet statistics. So far the theory of migration has focused on the interaction of planets with an inviscid or viscously evolving disk. Turbulent viscosity is thought to be the main driver of disk evolution and is known to affect the migration process. Recently, the topic of wind-driven accretion is experiencing a renaissance, as evidence is mounting that PPDs may be less turbulent than previously thought, and 3-D non-ideal MHD modeling of the wind-launching process is maturing. Aim: We wish to investigate how wind-driven accretion may affect migration. We aim for a qualitative exploration of the main effects, rather than a quantitative prediction. Methods: We perform 2-D hydrodynamic simulations with the FARGO3D code in the $(r,\phi)$-plane. The vertical coordinate and the launching of the wind are not treated explicitly. Instead, the torque of the wind onto the disk is treated using a simple 2-parameter formula treating the wind mass loss rate and the lever arm. Results: We find that the wind-driven accretion process has a different way of replenishing the co-orbital region than the viscous accretion. The former always injects mass from the outer edge of the co-orbital region and removes mass from the inner edge, while the latter injects or removes mass from the co-orbital region depending on the radial density gradients in the disk. The migration behavior can differ very much and under certain conditions it can drive rapid type-III-like outward migration. We derive an analytic expression for the parameters under which this outward migration occurs. Conclusion: If wind-driven accretion plays a role in the secular evolution of PPDs, migration studies have to include this process as well, because it can strongly affect the resulting migration rate and direction., Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Using the HPC ressources of the state of Baden-W\"urttemberg, we modelled for the first time the luminous burst from a young massive star by accretion of material from its close environment. We found that the surroundings of young massive stars are shaped as a clumpy disk whose fragments provoke outbursts once they fall onto the protostar and concluded that similar strong luminous events observed in high-mass star forming regions may be a signature of the presence of such disks., Comment: Proceedings of the 3rd bwHPC-Symposium, Heidelberg (2016), 2 pages, 2 figures

The surroundings of massive protostars constitute an accretion disc which has numerically been shown to be subject to fragmentation and responsible for luminous accretion-driven outbursts. Moreover, it is suspected to produce close binary companions which will later strongly influence the star's future evolution in the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram. We present three-dimensional gravitation-radiation-hydrodynamic numerical simulations of 100 Mo pre-stellar cores. We find that accretion discs of young massive stars violently fragment without preventing the (highly variable) accretion of gaseous clumps onto the protostars. While acquiring the characteristics of a nascent low-mass companion, some disc fragments migrate onto the central massive protostar with dynamical properties showing that its final Keplerian orbit is close enough to constitute a close massive proto-binary system, having a young high-mass and a low-mass component. We conclude on the viability of the disc fragmentation channel for the formation of such short-period binaries, and that both processes -close massive binary formation and accretion bursts- may happen at the same time. FU-Orionis-type bursts, such as observed in the young high-mass star S255IR-NIRS3, may not only indicate ongoing disc fragmentation, but also be considered as a tracer for the formation of close massive binaries - progenitors of the subsequent massive spectroscopic binaries - once the high-mass component of the system will enter the main-sequence phase of its evolution. A significant fraction of OB-type, main-sequence massive stars are classified as runaway and move supersonically through the interstellar medium (ISM). Their strong stellar winds interact with their surroundings where the typical strength of the local ISM magnetic field is about 3.5-7 micro-G, which can result in the formation of bow shock nebulae. We investigate the effects of such magnetic fields, aligned with the motion of the flow, on the formation and emission properties of these circumstellar structures. Our axisymmetric, magneto-hydrodynamical simulations with optically-thin radiative cooling, heating and anisotropic thermal conduction show that the presence of the background ISM magnetic field affects the projected optical emission our bow shocks at Ha and [OIII] lambda 5007 which become fainter by about 1-2 orders of magnitude, respectively. Radiative transfer calculations against dust opacity indicate that the magnetic field slightly diminishes their projected infrared emission and that our bow shocks emit brightly at 60 micron. This may explain why the bow shocks generated by ionizing runaway massive stars are often difficult to identify. Finally, we discuss our results in the context of the bow shock of Zeta Ophiuchi and we support the interpretation of its imperfect morphology as an evidence of the presence of an ISM magnetic field not aligned with the motion of its driving star., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS, 21 pages, 13 figures

Accretion-driven luminosity outbursts are a vivid manifestation of variable mass accretion onto protostars. They are known as the so-called FU Orionis phenomenon in the context of low-mass protostars. More recently, this process has been found in models of primordial star formation. Using numerical radiation hydrodynamics simulations, we stress that present-day forming massive stars also experience variable accretion and show that this process is accompanied by luminous outbursts induced by the episodic accretion of gaseous clumps falling from the circumstellar disk onto the protostar. Consequently, the process of accretion-induced luminous flares is also conceivable in the high-mass regime of star formation and we propose to regard this phenomenon as a general mechanism that can affect protostars regardless of their mass and/or the chemical properties of the parent environment in which they form. In addition to the commonness of accretion-driven outbursts in the star formation machinery, we conjecture that luminous flares from regions hosting forming high-mass star may be an observational implication of the fragmentation of their accretion disks., Comment: 5 pages, Accepted for MNRAS Letters

Massive stars that have been ejected from their parent cluster and supersonically sailing away through the interstellar medium (ISM) are classified as exiled. They generate circumstellar bow shock nebulae that can be observed. We present two-dimensional, axisymmetric hydrodynamical simulations of a representative sample of stellar wind bow shocks from Galactic OB stars in an ambient medium of densities ranging from n_ISM=0.01 up to 10.0/cm3. Independently of their location in the Galaxy, we confirm that the infrared is the most appropriated waveband to search for bow shocks from massive stars. Their spectral energy distribution is the convenient tool to analyze them since their emission does not depend on the temporary effects which could affect unstable, thin-shelled bow shocks. Our numerical models of Galactic bow shocks generated by high-mass (~40 Mo) runaway stars yield H$\alpha$ fluxes which could be observed by facilities such as the SuperCOSMOS H-Alpha Survey. The brightest bow shock nebulae are produced in the denser regions of the ISM. We predict that bow shocks in the field observed at Ha by means of Rayleigh-sensitive facilities are formed around stars of initial mass larger than about 20 Mo. Our models of bow shocks from OB stars have the emission maximum in the wavelength range 3 <= lambda <= 50 micrometer which can be up to several orders of magnitude brighter than the runaway stars themselves, particularly for stars of initial mass larger than 20 Mo., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures. Context: Anticyclonic vortices are considered as a favourable places for trapping dust and forming planetary embryos. On the other hand, they are massive blobs that can interact gravitationally with the planets in the disc. Aims: We aim to study how a vortex interacts gravitationally with a planet which migrates toward it or a planet which is created inside the vortex. Methods: We performed hydrodynamical simulations of a viscous locally isothermal disc using GFARGO and FARGO-ADSG. We set a stationary Gaussian pressure bump in the disc in a way that RWI is triggered. After a large vortex is established, we implanted a low mass planet in the outer disc or inside the vortex and allowed it to migrate. We also examined the effect of vortex strength on the planet migration and checked the validity of the final result in the presence of self-gravity. Results: We noticed regardless of the planet's initial position, the planet is finally locked to the vortex or its migration is stopped in a farther orbital distance in case of a stronger vortex. For the model with the weaker vortex, we studied the effect of different parameters such as background viscosity, background surface density, mass of the planet and different planet positions. In these models, while the trapping time and locking angle of the planet vary for different parameters, the main result, which is the planet-vortex locking, remains valid. We discovered that even a planet with a mass less than 5 * 10^{-7} M_{\star} comes out from the vortex and is locked to it at the same orbital distance. For a stronger vortex, both in non-self-gravitated and self-gravitating models, the planet migration is stopped far away from the radial position of the vortex. This effect can make the vortices a suitable place for continual planet formation under the condition that they save their shape during the planetary growth., Comment: 13 pages, 21 figures,Accepted to be published in A&A

Here we compute detailed model spectra of recently published optically thick one-dimensional radial baundary layer (BL) models in cataclysmic variables and compare them with observed soft X-ray/extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectra of dwarf novae in outburst. Every considered BL model is divided into a number of rings, and for each ring, a structure model along the vertical direction is computed using the stellar-atmosphere method. The ring spectra are then combined into a BL spectrum taking Doppler broadening and limb darkening into account. Two sets of model BL spectra are computed, the first of them consists of BL models with fixed white dwarf (WD) mass (1 M_sun) and various relative WD angular velocities (0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 break-up velocities), while the other deals with a fixed relative angular velocity (0.8 break-up velocity) and various WD masses (0.8, 1, and 1.2 M_sun). The model spectra show broad absorption features because of blending of numerous absorption lines, and emission-like features at spectral regions with only a few strong absorption lines. The model spectra are very similar to observed soft X-ray/EUV spectra of SS Cyg and U Gem in outburst. The observed SS Cyg spectrum could be fitted by BL model spectra with WD masses 0.8 - 1 M_sun and relative angular velocities 0.6 - 0.8 break up velocities. These BL models also reproduce the observed ratio of BL luminosity and disk luminosity. The difference between the observed and the BL model spectra is similar to a hot optically thin plasma spectrum and could be associated with the spectrum of outflowing plasma with a mass loss rate compatible with the BL mass accretion rate. PLATO 2.0 has recently been selected for ESA's M3 launch opportunity (2022/24). Providing accurate key planet parameters (radius, mass, density and age) in statistical numbers, it addresses fundamental questions such as: How do planetary systems form and evolve? Are there other systems with planets like ours, including potentially habitable planets? The PLATO 2.0 instrument consists of 34 small aperture telescopes (32 with 25 sec readout cadence and 2 with 2.5 sec candence) providing a wide field-of-view (2232 deg2) and a large photometric magnitude range (4-16 mag). It focusses on bright (4-11 mag) stars in wide fields to detect and characterize planets down to Earth-size by photometric transits, whose masses can then be determined by ground-based radial-velocity follow-up measurements. Asteroseismology will be performed for these bright stars to obtain highly accurate stellar parameters, including masses and ages. The combination of bright targets and asteroseismology results in high accuracy for the bulk planet parameters: 2%, 4-10% and 10% for planet radii, masses and ages, respectively. The planned baseline observing strategy includes two long pointings (2-3 years) to detect and bulk characterize planets reaching into the habitable zone (HZ) of solar-like stars and an additional step-and-stare phase to cover in total about 50% of the sky. PLATO 2.0 will observe up to 1,000,000 stars and detect and characterize hundreds of small planets, and thousands of planets in the Neptune to gas giant regime out to the HZ. It will therefore provide the first large-scale catalogue of bulk characterized planets with accurate radii, masses, mean densities and ages. This catalogue will include terrestrial planets at intermediate orbital distances, where surface temperatures are moderate. The strength and direction of migration of low mass embedded planets depends on the disk's thermodynamic state, where the internal dissipation is balanced by radiative transport, and the migration can be directed outwards, a process which extends the lifetime of growing embryos. Very important parameters determining the structure of disks, and hence the direction of migration, are the viscosity and the adiabatic index. In this paper we investigate the influence of different viscosity prescriptions (alpha-type and constant) and adiabatic indices on disk structures and how this affects the migration rate of planets embedded in such disks. We perform 3D numerical simulations of accretion disks with embedded planets. We use the explicit/implicit hydrodynamical code NIRVANA that includes full tensor viscosity and radiation transport in the flux-limited diffusion approximation, as well as a proper equation of state for molecular hydrogen. The migration of embedded 20Earthmass planets is studied. Low-viscosity disks have cooler temperatures and the migration rates of embedded planets tend toward the isothermal limit. In these disks, planets migrate inwards even in the fully radiative case. The effect of outward migration can only be sustained if the viscosity in the disk is large. Overall, the differences between the treatments for the equation of state seem to play a more important role in disks with higher viscosity. A change in the adiabatic index and in the viscosity changes the zero-torque radius that separates inward from outward migration. For larger viscosities, temperatures in the disk become higher and the zero-torque radius moves to larger radii, allowing outward migration of a 20 Earth-mass planet to persist over an extended radial range. In combination with large disk masses, this may allow for an extended period of the outward migration of growing protoplanetary cores.

In 2D simulations of thin gaseous disks with embedded planets or self-gravity the gravitational potential needs to be smoothed to avoid singularities in the numerical evaluation of the gravitational potential or force. In order to correctly resemble the realistic case of vertically extended 3D disks the softening prescription used in 2D needs to be adjusted properly. In this paper we analyze the embedded planet and the self-gravity case and provide a method to evaluate the required smoothing in 2D simulations of thin disks. Starting from the averaged hydrodynamic equations and using a vertically isothermal disk model, we calculate the force. We compare our results to the often used Plummer form of the potential which runs as \propto 1/(r^2+\epsilon^2)^{1/2}. For that purpose we compute the required smoothing length \epsilon as a function of distance r to the planet or to a disk element within a self-gravitating disk. We find that for larger distances \epsilon is determined solely by the vertical disk thickness H. For the planet case we find that outside r\simH a value of \epsilon = 0.7H describes the averaged force very well, while in the self-gravitating disk the value needs to be larger, \epsilon = 1.2H. For smaller distances the smoothing needs to be reduced significantly. Comparing torque densities of 3D and 2D simulations we show that the modification to the vertical density stratification as induced by an embedded planet needs to be taken into account to obtain agreeing results. In disk fragmentation simulations the choice of \epsilon can determine whether a disk will fragment or not. Because a wrong smoothing length can change even the direction of migration, it is very important to include the effect of the planet on the local scale height in 2D planet-disk simulations. As planets form and grow within gaseous protoplanetary disks, the mutual gravitational interaction between the disk and planet leads to the exchange of angular momentum, and migration of the planet. We review current understanding of disk-planet interactions, focussing in particular on physical processes that determine the speed and direction of migration. We describe the evolution of low mass planets embedded in protoplanetary disks, and examine the influence of Lindblad and corotation torques as a function of the disk properties. The role of the disk in causing the evolution of eccentricities and inclinations is also discussed. We describe the rapid migration of intermediate mass planets that may occur as a runaway process, and examine the transition to gap formation and slower migration driven by the viscous evolution of the disk for massive planets. The roles and influence of disk self-gravity and magnetohydrodynamic turbulence are discussed in detail, as a function of the planet mass, as is the evolution of multiple planet systems. The aim of the present paper is to investigate the spatial structure of a protoplanetary disc whose dynamics is governed by magnetorotational turbulence. We perform a series of local 3D chemo-radiative MHD simulations located at different radii of a disc which is twice as massive as the standard minimum mass solar nebula of Hayashi (1981). The ionisation state of the disc is calculated by including collisional ionisation, stellar X-rays, cosmic rays and the decay of radionuclides as ionisation sources, and by solving a simplified chemical network which includes the effect of the absorption of free charges by {\mu}m-sized dust grains. In the region where the ionisation is too low to assure good coupling between matter and magnetic fields, a non-turbulent central "dead zone" forms, which ranges approximately from a distance of 2 AU to 4 AU from the central star. In the framework of the coagulation scenario, kilometre-sized planetesimals form by subsequent collisions of pre-planetesimals of sizes from centimetre to hundreds of metres. Pre-planetesimals are fluffy, porous dust aggregates, which are inhomogeneous owing to their collisional history. Planetesimal growth can be prevented by catastrophic disruption in pre-planetesimal collisions above the destruction velocity threshold. We develop an inhomogeneity model based on the density distribution of dust aggregates, which is assumed to be a Gaussian distribution with a well-defined standard deviation. As a second input parameter, we consider the typical size of an inhomogeneous clump. These input parameters are easily accessible by laboratory experiments. For the simulation of the dust aggregates, we utilise a smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) code with extensions for modelling porous solid bodies. The porosity model was previously calibrated for the simulation of silica dust, which commonly serves as an analogue for pre-planetesimal material. The inhomogeneity is imposed as an initial condition on the SPH particle distribution. We carry out collisions of centimetre-sized dust aggregates of intermediate porosity. We vary the standard deviation of the inhomogeneous distribution at fixed typical clump size. The collision outcome is categorised according to the four-population model. We show that inhomogeneous pre-planetesimals are more prone to destruction than homogeneous aggregates. Even slight inhomogeneities can lower the threshold for catastrophic disruption. For a fixed collision velocity, the sizes of the fragments decrease with increasing inhomogeneity. Pre-planetesimals with an active collisional history tend to be weaker. Context. Abridged. Many stars are members of binary systems. During early phases when the stars are surrounded by discs, the binary orbit and disc midplane may be mutually inclined. The discs around T Tauri stars will become mildly warped and undergo solid body precession around the angular momentum vector of the binary system. It is unclear how planetesimals in such a disc will evolve and affect planet formation. Aims. We investigate the dynamics of planetesimals embedded in discs that are perturbed by a binary companion on a circular, inclined orbit. We examine collisional velocities of the planetesimals to determine when they can grow through accretion. We vary the binary inclination, binary separation, D, disc mass, and planetesimal radius. Our standard model has D=60 AU, inclination=45 deg, and a disc mass equivalent to the MMSN. Methods. We use a 3D hydrodynamics code to model the disc. Planetesimals are test particles which experience gas drag, the gravitational force of the disc, the companion star gravity. Planetesimal orbit crossing events are detected and used to estimate collisional velocities. Results. For binary systems with modest inclination (25 deg), disc gravity prevents planetesimal orbits from undergoing strong differential nodal precession (which occurs in absence of the disc), and forces planetesimals to precess with the disc on average. For bodies of different size the orbit planes become modestly mutually inclined, leading to collisional velocities that inhibit growth. For larger inclinations (45 degrees), the Kozai effect operates, leading to destructively large relative velocities. Conclusions. Planet formation via planetesimal accretion is difficult in an inclined binary system with parameters similar to those considered in this paper. We have detected 2 circumbinary planets around the close binary system NN Serpentis using the orbital time delay effect measured via the sharp eclipses of the white dwarf primary. The present pre-cataclysmic binary was formed when the original - 2 M primary expanded into a red giant, causing the secondary star to drop from its original orbit at a separation of about 1.4 A.U. down to its current separation at 0.0043 A.U. A quasi-adiabatic evolution of the circumbinary planets' orbits during the common-envelope phase would have placed them in unstable configurations, suggesting that they may have suffered significant orbital drag effects and were originally in much larger orbits. Alternatively, they may have been created as 2nd-generation planets during the last million years from the substantial amount of material lost during the creation of the binary, making them the youngest planets known. Planets orbiting post-common envelope binaries provide fundamental information on planet formation and evolution. We searched for such planets in NN Ser ab, an eclipsing short-period binary that shows long-term eclipse time variations. Using published, reanalysed, and new mid-eclipse times of NN Ser ab obtained between 1988 and 2010, we find excellent agreement with the light-travel-time effect by two additional bodies superposed on the linear ephemeris of the binary. Our multi-parameter fits accompanied by N-body simulations yield a best fit for the objects NN Ser (ab)c and d locked in a 2:1 mean motion resonance, with orbital periods P_c=15.5 yrs and P_d=7.7 yrs, masses M_c sin i_c = 6.9 M_Jup and M_d sin i_d = 2.2 M_Jup, and eccentricities e_c=0 and e_d=0.20. A secondary chi**2 minimum corresponds to an alternative solution with a period ratio of 5:2. We estimate that the progenitor binary consisted of an A star with ~2 M_Sun and the present M dwarf secondary at an orbital separation of ~1.5 AU. The survival of two planets through the common-envelope phase that created the present white dwarf requires fine tuning between the gravitational force and the drag force experienced by them in the expanding envelope. The alternative is a second-generation origin in a circumbinary disk created at the end of this phase. We study the effects of diffusion on the non-linear corotation torque, or horseshoe drag, in the two-dimensional limit, focusing on low-mass planets for which the width of the horseshoe region is much smaller than the scale height of the disc. In the absence of diffusion, the non-linear corotation torque saturates, leaving only the Lindblad torque. Diffusion of heat and momentum can act to sustain the corotation torque. In the limit of very strong diffusion, the linear corotation torque is recovered. For the case of thermal diffusion, this limit corresponds to having a locally isothermal equation of state. We investigate a massive ($\varSigma \sim 10000 g cm^{-2}$ at 1 AU) protoplanetary disc model by means of 3D radiation magnetohydrodynamics simulations. The vertical structure of the disc is determined self-consistently by a balance between turbulent heating caused by the MRI and radiative cooling. Concerning the vertical structure, two different regions can be distinguished: A gas-pressure dominated, optically thick midplane region where most of the dissipation takes place, and a magnetically dominated, optically thin corona which is dominated by strong shocks. At the location of the photosphere, the turbulence is supersonic ($M \sim 2$), which is consistent with previous results obtained from the fitting of spectra of YSOs. It is known that the turbulent saturation level in simulations of MRI-induced turbulence does depend on numerical factors such as the numerical resolution and the box size. However, by performing a suite of runs at different resolutions (using up to 64x128x512 grid cells) and with varying box sizes (with up to 16 pressure scaleheights in the vertical direction), we find that both the saturation levels and the heating rates show a clear trend to converge once a sufficient resolution in the vertical direction has been achieved., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the torque on low-mass planets embedded in protoplanetary discs in the two-dimensional approximation, incorporating non-isothermal effects. We couple linear estimates of the Lindblad (or wave) torque to a simple, but non-linear, model of adiabatic corotation torques (or horseshoe drag), resulting in a simple formula that governs Type I migration in non-isothermal discs. This formula should apply in optically thick regions of the disc, where viscous and thermal diffusion act to keep the horseshoe drag unsaturated. Numerical simulations of planets embedded in protoplanetary gaseous discs are a precious tool for studying the planetary migration ; however, some approximations have to be made. Most often, the selfgravity of the gas is neglected. In that case, it is not clear in the literature how the material inside the Roche lobe of the planet should be taken into account. Here, we want to address this issue by studying the influence of various methods so far used by different authors on the migration rate. We performed high-resolution numerical simulations of giant planets embedded in discs. We compared the migration rates with and without gas selfgravity, testing various ways of taking the circum-planetary disc (CPD) into account. Different methods lead to significantly different migration rates. Adding the mass of the CPD to the perturbing mass of the planet accelerates the migration. Excluding a part of the Hill sphere is a very touchy parameter that may lead to an artificial suppression of the type III, runaway migration. In fact, the CPD is smaller than the Hill sphere. We recommend excluding no more than a 0.6 Hill radius and using a smooth filter. Alternatively, the CPD can be given the acceleration felt by the planet from the rest of the protoplanetary disc. The gas inside the Roche lobe of the planet should be very carefully taken into account in numerical simulations without any selfgravity of the gas. The entire Hill sphere should not be excluded. The method used should be explicitly given. In this paper we investigate the influence of radiative transport on the growth of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) in accretion discs. The analysis is performed by use of analytical and numerical means. We provide a general dispersion relation together with the corresponding eigenfunctions describing the growth rates of small disturbances on a homogeneous background shear flow. The dispersion relation includes compressibility and radiative effects in the flux-limited diffusion approximation. By introducing an effective speed of sound, all the effects of radiation transport can be subsumed into one single parameter. It can be shown that the growth rates of the vertical modes -- which are the fastest growing ones -- are reduced by radiative transport. For the case of non-vertical modes, the growth rates may instead be enhanced. We quantify the effects of compressibility and radiative diffusion on the growth rates for the gas-pressure dominated case. The analytical discussion is supplemented by numerical simulations, which are also used for a first investigation of the non-linear stage of the MRI in gas-pressure dominated accretion discs with radiation transport included., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

The formation of resonant planets pairs in exoplanetary systems involves planetary migration inside the protoplanetary disc : an inwards migrating outer planet captures in Mean Motion Resonance an inner planet. During the migration of the resonant pair of planets, the eccentricities are expected to rise excessively, if no damping mechanism is applied on the inner planet. We express the required damping action to match the observations, and we show that the inner disk can play this role. The formation of resonant pairs of planets in exoplanetary systems involves planetary migration in the protoplanetary disc. After a resonant capture, the subsequent migration in this configuration leads to a large increase of planetary eccentricities if no damping mechanism is applied. This has led to the conclusion that the migration of resonant planetary systems cannot occur over large radial distances and has to be terminated sufficiently rapidly through disc dissipation. In this study, we investigate whether the presence of an inner disc might supply an eccentricity damping of the inner planet, and if this effect could explain the observed eccentricities in some systems. To investigate the influence of an inner disc, we first compute hydrodynamic simulations of giant planets orbiting with a given eccentricity around an inner gas disc, and measure the effect of the latter on the planetary orbital parameters. We then perform detailed long term calculations of the GJ 876 system. We also run N-body simulations with artificial forces on the planets mimicking the effects of the inner and outer discs. We find that the influence of the inner disc can not be neglected, and that it might be responsible for the observed eccentricities. In particular, we reproduce quite well the orbital parameters of a few systems engaged in 2:1 mean motion resonances: GJ 876, HD 73526, HD 82943 and HD 128311. Based on radial velocity measurements it has been found recently that the two giant planets detected around the star HD 73526 are in 2:1 resonance. However, as our numerical integration shows, the derived orbital data for this system result in chaotic behavior of the giant planets, which is uncommon among the resonant extrasolar planetary systems. We intend to present regular (non-chaotic) orbital solutions for the giant planets in the system HD 73526 and offer formation scenarios based on combining planetary migration and sudden perturbative effects such as planet-planet scattering or rapid dispersal of the protoplanetary disk. A comparison with the already studied resonant system HD 128311, exhibiting similar behavior, is also done. The new sets of orbital solutions have been derived by the Systemic Console (www.oklo.org). The stability of these solutions has been investigated by the Relative Lyapunov indicator, while the migration and scattering effects are studied by gravitational N-body simulations applying non-conservative forces as well. Additionally, hydrodynamic simulations of embedded planets in protoplanetary disks are performed to follow the capture into resonance. For the system HD 73526 we demonstrate that the observational radial velocity data are consistent with a coplanar planetary system engaged in a stable 2:1 resonance exhibiting apsidal corotation. We have shown that, similarly to the system HD 128311, the present dynamical state of HD 73526 could be the result of a mixed evolutionary process melting together planetary migration and a perturbative event., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures, accepted in A&A, v2: technical changes

Following the recent insight in the material structure of comets, protoplanetesimals are assumed to have low densities and to be highly porous agglomerates. It is still unclear if planetesimals can be formed from these objects by collisional growth. Therefore, it is important to study numerically the collisional outcome from low velocity impacts of equal sized porous agglomerates which are too large to be examined in a laboratory experiment. We use the Lagrangian particle method Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics to solve the equations that describe the dynamics of elastic and plastic bodies. Additionally, to account for the influence of porosity, we follow a previous developed equation of state and certain relations between the material strength and the relative density. Collisional growth seems possible for rather low collision velocities and particular material strengths. The remnants of collisions with impact parameters that are larger than 50% of the radius of the colliding objects tend to rotate. For small impact parameters, the colliding objects are effectively slowed down without a prominent compaction of the porous structure, which probably increases the possibility for growth. The protoplanetesimals, however, do not stick together for the most part of the employed material strengths. An important issue in subsequent studies has to be the influence of rotation to collisional growth. The increase of computational resources has recently allowed high resolution, three dimensional calculations of planets embedded in gaseous protoplanetary disks. They provide estimates of the planet migration timescale that can be compared to analytical predictions. While these predictions can result in extremely short migration timescales for cores of a few Earth masses, recent numerical calculations have given an unexpected outcome: the torque acting on planets with masses between 5 M_Earth and 20 M_Earth is considerably smaller than the analytic, linear estimate. These findings motivated the present work, which investigates existence and origin of this discrepancy or ``offset'', as we shall call it, by means of two and three dimensional numerical calculations. We show that the offset is indeed physical and arises from the coorbital corotation torque, since (i) it scales with the disk vortensity gradient, (ii) its asymptotic value depends on the disk viscosity, (iii) it is associated to an excess of the horseshoe zone width. We show that the offset corresponds to the onset of non-linearities of the flow around the planet, which alter the streamline topology as the planet mass increases: at low mass the flow non-linearities are confined to the planet's Bondi sphere whereas at larger mass the streamlines display a classical picture reminiscent of the restricted three body problem, with a prograde circumplanetary disk inside a ``Roche lobe''. This behavior is of particular importance for the sub-critical solid cores (M <~ 15 M_Earth) in thin (H/r <~0.06) protoplanetary disks. Their migration could be significantly slowed down, or reversed, in disks with shallow surface density profiles., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We perform numerical simulations of a disc-planet system using various grid-based and smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) codes. The tests are run for a simple setup where Jupiter and Neptune mass planets on a circular orbit open a gap in a protoplanetary disc during a few hundred orbital periods. We compare the surface density contours, potential vorticity and smoothed radial profiles at several times. The disc mass and gravitational torque time evolution are analyzed with high temporal resolution. There is overall consistency between the codes. The density profiles agree within about 5% for the Eulerian simulations while the SPH results predict the correct shape of the gap although have less resolution in the low density regions and weaker planetary wakes. The disc masses after 200 orbital periods agree within 10%. The spread is larger in the tidal torques acting on the planet which agree within a factor 2 at the end of the simulation. In the Neptune case the dispersion in the torques is greater than for Jupiter, possibly owing to the contribution from the not completely cleared region close to the planet., Comment: 32 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The discovery of close orbiting extrasolar giant planets led to extensive studies of disk planet interactions and the forms of migration that can result as a means of accounting for their location. Early work established the type I and type II migration regimes for low mass embedded planets and high mass gap forming planets respectively. While providing an attractive means of accounting for close orbiting planets intially formed at several AU, inward migration times for objects in the earth mass range were found to be disturbingly short, making the survival of giant planet cores an issue. Recent progress in this area has come from the application of modern numerical techniques which make use of up to date supercomputer resources. These have enabled higher resolution studies of the regions close to the planet and the initiation of studies of planets interacting with disks undergoing MHD turbulence. This work has led to indications of how the inward migration of low to intermediate mass planets could be slowed down or reversed. In addition, the possibility of a new very fast type III migration regime, that can be directed inwards or outwards, that is relevant to partial gap forming planets in massive disks has been investigated., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, to appear in "Protostars and Planets V". We study the evolution of an embedded protoplanet in a circumstellar disk using the 3D-Radiation Hydro code TRAMP, and treat the thermodynamics of the gas properly in three dimensions. The primary interest of this work lies in the demonstration and testing of the numerical method. We show how far numerical parameters can influence the simulations of gap opening. We study a standard reference model under various numerical approximations. Then we compare the commonly used locally isothermal approximation to the radiation hydro simulation using an equation for the internal energy. Models with different treatments of the mass accretion process are compared. Often mass accumulates in the Roche lobe of the planet creating a hydrostatic atmosphere around the planet. The gravitational torques induced by the spiral pattern of the disk onto the planet are not strongly affected in the average magnitude, but the short time scale fluctuations are stronger in the radiation hydro models. An interesting result of this work lies in the analysis of the temperature structure around the planet. The most striking effect of treating the thermodynamics properly is the formation of a hot pressure--supported bubble around the planet with a pressure scale height of H/R ~ 0.5 rather than a thin Keplerian circumplanetary accretion disk. We study the evolution and emission of circumbinary disks around close classical T Tauri binary systems. High resolution numerical hydrodynamical simulations are employed to model a system consisting of a central eccentric binary star within an irradiated accretion disk. A detailed energy balance including viscous heating, radiative cooling and irradiation from the central star is applied to calculate accurately the emitted spectral energy distribution. Numerical simulations using two different methods, the previously developed Dual-Grid technique with a finite difference discretization, and the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method are employed to compare the hydrodynamical features and strengthen our conclusions. Physical parameters of the setup are chosen to model the close systems of DQ Tau and AK Sco. Using the self-consistent models, we are able to fit the observed spectral energy distributions by constraining parameters such as disk mass, density profile and radial extension for those systems. We have performed Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations to study the time evolution of one and two protoplanets embedded in a protoplanetary accretion disc. We investigate accretion and migration rates of a single protoplanet depending on several parameters of the protoplanetary disc, mainly viscosity and scale height. Additionally, we consider the influence of a second protoplanet in a long time simulation and examine the migration of the two planets in the disc, especially the growth of eccentricity and chaotic behaviour. One aim of this work is to establish the feasibility of SPH for such calculations considering that usually only grid-based methods are adopted. To resolve shocks and to prevent particle penetration, we introduce a new approach for an artificial viscosity, which consists of an additional artificial bulk viscosity term in the SPH-representation of the Navier-Stokes equation. Recently, 59 low-luminosity object transits were reported from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE). Our follow-up low-resolution spectroscopy of 16 candidates provided two objects, OGLE-TR-3 and OGLE-TR-10, which have companions with radii compatible with those of gas-giant planets. Further high-resolution spectroscopy revealed a very low velocity variation (<500m/s) of the host star OGLE-TR-3 which may be caused by its unseen companion. An analysis of the radial velocity and light curve results in M<2.5 M_jup, R<1.6 R_jup, and an orbital separation of about 5 R_sol, which makes it the planet with the shortest period known. This allows to identify the low-luminosity companion of OGLE-TR-3 as a possible new gas-giant planet. We study analytically and numerically the stability of the pressure-less, viscously spreading accretion ring. We show that the ring is unstable to small non-axisymmetric perturbations. To perform the perturbation analysis of the ring we use a stretching transformation of the time coordinate. We find that to 1st order, one-armed spiral structures, and to 2nd order additionally two-armed spiral features may appear. Furthermore, we identify a dispersion relation determining the instability of the ring. The theoretical results are confirmed in several simulations, using two different numerical methods. These computations prove independently the existence of a secular spiral instability driven by viscosity, which evolves into persisting leading and trailing spiral waves. Planet evolution is tightly connected to the dynamics of both distant and close disk material. Hence, an appropriate description of disk-planet interaction requires global and high resolution computations, which we accomplish by applying a Nested-Grid method. Through simulations in two and three dimensions, we investigate how migration and accretion are affected by long and short range interactions. We investigate the possibility to find evidence for planets in circumstellar disks by infrared and submillimeter interferometry. Hydrodynamical simulations of a circumstellar disk around a solar-type star with an embedded planet of 1 Jupiter mass are presented. On the basis of 3D radiative transfer simulations, images of this system are calculated. These intensity maps provide the basis for the simulation of the interferometers VLTI (equipped with the mid-infrared instrument MIDI) and ALMA. Recently, 46 low-luminosity object transits were reported from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. Our follow-up spectroscopy of the 16 most promising candidates provides a spectral classification of the primary. Together with the radius ratio from the transit measurements, we derived the radii of the low-luminosity companions. This allows to examine the possible sub-stellar nature of these objects. Fourteen of them can be clearly identified as low-mass stars. Two objects, OGLE-TR-03 and OGLE-TR-10 have companions with radii of 0.15 R_sun which is very similar to the radius of the transiting planet HD209458B. A novel numerical approach using a parallelized Dual-Grid technique on two different coordinate systems has been implemented. Physical parameters of the setup are chosen to model the close systems of DQ Tau and AK Sco, as well as the wider systems of GG Tau and UY Aur. Our main findings are for the tight binaries a substantial flow of material through the disk gap which is accreted onto the central stars in a phase dependent process.
