We have investigated solid oxygen as a converter material for the production of ultra-cold neutrons. In a first series of experiments the crystal preparation was examined. An optically semi-transparent solid $\alpha$-oxygen crystal has been prepared. In a second series of experiments such a crystal prepared indentically as in the first series of experiments has been exposed to the cold neutron flux of the MEPHISTO beam line of the FRM II. Ultra-cold neutrons produced inside the oxygen crystal have been extracted and the count rates have been measured at different converter temperatures. The results of these measurements give a clear signal of the superthermal UCN production mechanism in $\alpha$-oxygen. The mean free loss length of UCN inside the crystal at a temperature of 5\,K was determined to be in the order of $20\,\mathrm{cm}$., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We report experiments on the production of ultracold neutrons (UCN) in a converter of superfluid helium coated with fluorinated grease. We employed our technique of window-free extraction of accumulated UCN from the helium, in which they were produced by downscattering neutrons of a cold beam from the Munich research reactor. The time constant for UCN passage through the same extraction aperture as in a previous experiment was a factor two shorter, despite a lower mean velocity of the accumulated UCN in the present experiments. A time-of-flight measurement of the cold neutron spectrum incident on the converter allowed us to estimate the multi-phonon contribution to the UCN production. We present elastic neutron scattering results at high magnetic fields for Mg-doped CuGeO$_{3}$. For low magnesium concentrations, where a spin-Peierls phase is present, we find an enhancement of the long range antiferromagnetic order in the structural incommensurate phase induced by a high magnetic field. In the incommensurate phase, the N\'eel temperature increases with field leading to a gain in the magnetic Bragg peak intensity at low temperatures. We also find that the magnetic Bragg peaks remain commensurate even though the structure is incommensurate at high magnetic fields due to the formation of solitons. We interpret these results in terms of the solitons formed at high-magnetic fields effectively acting as doped impurities. The field induced magnetic phase transitions of Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ were investigated by means of magnetization process and neutron scattering experiments. This system undergoes magnetic phase transition at Ne\'{e}l temperature $T_\mathrm{N}=1.4$ K at zero field, and exhibits the magnetization plateau at approximately one third of the saturation magnetization for the field directions $H\parallel b$ and $H\parallel c$. In the present study, additional symptom of the two-third magnetization plateau was found in the field derivative of the magnetization process. The magnetic structure was found to be incommensurate with the ordering vector $\boldsymbol{Q}=(0, 0.575, 0)$ at zero field. With increasing magnetic field parallel to the c-axis, the ordering vector increases continuously and is locked at $\boldsymbol{Q}=(0, 0.662, 0)$ in the plateau field range $13.1 \mathrm{T} < H < 14.4 \mathrm{T}$. This indicates that the collinear \textit{up-up-down} spin structure is stabilized by quantum fluctuation at the magnetization plateau., Comment: 6 pages, 4 Postscript figures, uses iopams.sty and IOPART.CLS
