The exponential of an operator or matrix is widely used in quantum theory, but it sometimes can be a challenge to evaluate. For non-commutative operators ${\bf X}$ and ${\bf Y}$, according to the Campbell-Baker-Hausdorff-Dynkin theorem, ${\rm e}^{{\bf X}+{\bf Y}}$ is not equivalent to ${\rm e}^{\bf X}{\rm e}^{\bf Y}$, but is instead given by the well-known infinite series formula. For a Lie algebra of a basis of three operators $\{{\bf X,Y,Z}\}$, such that $[{\bf X}, {\bf Y}] = \kappa{\bf Z}$ for scalar $\kappa$ and cyclic permutations, here it is proven that ${\rm e}^{a{\bf X}+b{\bf Y}}$ is equivalent to ${\rm e}^{p{\bf Z}}{\rm e}^{q{\bf X}}{\rm e}^{-p{\bf Z}}$ for scalar $p$ and $q$. Extensions for ${\rm e}^{a{\bf X}+b{\bf Y}+c{\bf Z}}$ are also provided. The quantum spin Hall effect has been observed in topological insulators using spin-orbit coupling as the probe, but it has not yet been observed in a metal. An experiment is proposed to measure the quantum spin Hall effect of an electron or hole in a two-dimensional (2D) metal by using the previously unexplored but relativistically generated 2D quantum spin Hall Hamiltonian, but without using spin-orbit coupling. A long cylindrical solenoid lies normally through the inner radius of a 2D metallic Corbino disk. The current $I_S$ surrounding the solenoid produces an azimuthal magnetic vector potential but no magnetic field in the disk. In addition, a radial electric field is generated across the disk by imposing either (a) a potential difference $\Delta v$ or (b) a radial charge current ${\bm I}$ across its inner and outer radii. Combined changes in $I_S$ and in either $\Delta v$ or ${\bm I}$ generate spontaneously quantized azimuthal charge and spin currents. The experiment is designed to measure these quantized azimuthal charge and spin currents in the disk consistently. The quantum Hamiltonians for experiments (a) and (b) are both solved exactly. A method to control the Joule heating is presented, which could potentially allow the quantum spin Hall measurements to be made at room temperature. Extensions of this design to an array of thermally-managed solenoids, each surrounded by thermally-managed stacks of 2D metallic Corbino disks, could function as a quantum computer that could potentially operate at room temperature., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

We employ the Schr{\"o}dinger-Dirac method generalized to an ellipsoidal effective mass anisotropy in order to treat the spin and orbital effective mass anisotropies self consistently, which is important when Pauli-limiting effects on the upper critical field characteristic of singlet superconductivity are present. By employing the Klemm-Clem transformations to map the equations of motion into isotropic form, we then calculate the upper critical magnetic induction $B_{c2}(\theta, \phi, T)$ at arbitrary directions and temperatures $T$ for isotropic $s$-wave and for anisotropic $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting order parameters. As for anisotropic $s$-wave superconductors, the reduced upper critical field $b_{c2}$ is largest in the direction of the lowest effective mass, and is proportional to the universal orientation factor $\alpha(\theta,\phi)$. However, for $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing, ${\bm B}_{c2}(\pi/2,\phi,T)$ exhibits either a four-fold pattern with $C_4$ symmetry just below the transition temperature $T_c$ that rotates by $\pi/4$ as $T$ is lowered, or a two-fold pattern with $C_2$ symmetry, depending upon the planar effective mass anisotropy. This provides a new method to distinguish these pairing symmetries in clean unconventional superconductors., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

In order to probe the transitions of a nuclear spin $s$ from one of its substate quantum numbers $m$ to another substate $m'$, the experimenter applies a magnetic field ${\bm B}_0$ in some particular direction, such along $\hat{\bm z}$, and then applies an weaker field ${\bm B}_1(t)$ that is oscillatory in time with the angular frequency $\omega$, and is normally perpendicular to ${\bm B}_0$, such as ${\bm B}_1(t)=B_1\hat{\bm x}\cos(\omega t)$. In the rotating wave approximation, ${\bm B}_1(t)=B_1[\hat{\bm x}\cos(\omega t)+\hat{\bm y}\sin(\omega t)]$. Although this problem is solved for spin $\frac{1}{2}$ in every quantum mechanics textbook, for the general spin $s$ case, its general solution has been published only for the overall probability of a transition between the states, but the time dependence of the probability of finding the nucleus in each of the substates has not previously been published. Here we present an elementary method to solve this problem exactly, and present figures for the time dependencies of the various substates states for a variety of initial substate probabilities for a variety of $s$ values. We found a new result: unlike the $s=\frac{1}{2}$ case, for which if the initial probability of finding the particle in one of the substates was 1, and the time dependence of the probabilities of each of the substates oscillates between 0 and 1, for higher spin values, the time dependencies of the probabilities finding the particle in each of its substates, which periodic, is considerably more complicated., Comment: 9 pages 8 figures

For a spinless quantum particle in a one-dimensional box or an electromagnetic wave in a one-dimensional cavity, the respective Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions both lead to non-degenerate wave functions. However, in two spatial dimensions, the symmetry of the box or microstrip antenna is an important feature that has often been overlooked in the literature. In the high-symmetry cases of a disk, square, or equilateral triangle, the wave functions for each of those two boundary conditions are grouped into two distinct classes, which are one- and two-dimensional representations of the respective point groups, $C_{\infty v}$, $C_{4v}$, and $C_{3v}$. Here we present visualizations of representative wave functions for both boundary conditions and both one- and two-dimensional representations of those point groups. For the one-dimensional representations, color contour plots of the wave functions are presented. For the two-dimensional representations, the infinite degeneracies are presented as common nodal points and/or lines, the patterns of which are invariant under all operations of the respective point group. The wave functions with the Neumann boundary conditions have important consequences for the coherent terahertz emission from the intrinsic Josephson junctions in the high-temperature superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$: the enhancement of the output power from electromagnetic cavity resonances is only strong for wave functions that are not degenerate., Comment: 18 pages, 23 figures

When an electron or hole is in a conduction band of a crystal, it can be very different from 2, depending upon the crystalline anisotropy and the direction of the applied magnetic induction ${\bf B}$. In fact, it can even be 0! To demonstrate this quantitatively, the Dirac equation is extended for a relativistic electron or hole in an orthorhombically-anisotropic conduction band with effective masses $m_j$ for $j=1,2,3$ with geometric mean $m_g=(m_1m_2m_3)^{1/3}$. The appropriate Foldy-Wouthuysen transformations are extended to evaluate the non-relativistic Hamiltonian to $O({\rm m}c^2)^{-4}$, where ${\rm m}c^2$ is the particle's Einstein rest energy. For ${\bf B}||\hat{\bf e}_{\mu}$, the Zeeman $g_{\mu}$ factor is $2{\rm m}\sqrt{m_{\mu}}/m_g^{3/2} + O({\rm m}c^2)^{-2}$. While propagating in a two-dimensional (2D) conduction band with $m_3\gg m_1,m_2$, $g_{||}<<2$, consistent with recent measurements of the temperature $T$ dependence of the parallel upper critical induction $B_{c2,||}(T)$ in superconducting monolayer NbSe$_2$ and in twisted bilayer graphene. While a particle is in its conduction band of an atomically thin one-dimensional metallic chain along $\hat{\bf e}_{\mu}$, $g<<2$ for all ${\bf B}={\bf\nabla}\times{\bf A}$ directions and vanishingly small for ${\bf B}||\hat{\bf e}_{\mu}$. The quantum spin Hall Hamiltonian for 2D metals with $m_1=m_2=m_{||}$ is $K[{\bf E}\times({\bf p}-q{\bf A})]_{\perp}\sigma_{\perp}+O({\rm m}c^2)^{-4}$, where ${\bf E}$ and ${\bf p}-q{\bf A}$ are the planar electric field and gauge-invariant momentum, $q=\mp|e|$ is the particle's charge, $\sigma_{\perp}$ is the Pauli matrix normal to the layer, $K=\pm\mu_B/(2m_{||}c^2)$, and $\mu_B$ is the Bohr magneton., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1906.10164

From the Dirac equation of an electron in an anisotropic conduction band, the anisotropy of its motion dramatically affects its interaction with applied electric and magnetic fields. The quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) is observable in two-dimensional metals without spin-orbit coupling. The dimensionality of the Zeeman interaction plays an important role in the QSHE, and profoundly modifies many interpretations of measurements of the Knight shift and of the upper critical field in highly anisotropic superconductors.

The Dirac equation is extended for a relativistic electron in an orthorhombically-anisotropic conduction band. Its covariance is established with general proper and improper Lorentz transformations. In the non-relativistic limit, the kinetic and Zeeman energy terms of the Hamiltonian are both determined by the same three effective masses, and the quantum spin Hall effect is derived. This has important consequences for magnetic measurements of many classes of clean anisotropic semiconductors, metals, and superconductors. A method is proposed to extend the zero-temperature Hall-Klemm microscopic theory of the Knight shift $K$ in an anisotropic and correlated, multi-band metal to calculate $K(T)$ at finite temperatures $T$ both above and into its superconducting state. The transverse part of the magnetic induction ${\bf B}(t)={\bf B}_0+{\bf B}_1(t)$ causes adiabatic changes suitable for treatment with the Keldysh contour formalism and analytic continuation onto the real axis. We propose that the Keldysh-modified version of the Gor'kov method can be used to evaluate $K(T)$ at high ${\bf B}_0$ both in the normal state, and by quantizing the conduction electrons or holes with Landau orbits arising from ${\bf B}_0$, also in the entire superconducting regime for an anisotropic, multiband Type-II BCS superconductor. Although the details have not yet been calculated in detail, it appears that this approach could lead to the simple result $K_S(T)\approx a({\bf B}_0)-b({\bf B}_0)|\Delta({\bf B}_0,T)|^2$, where $2|\Delta({\bf B}_0,T)|$ is the effective superconducting gap. More generally, this approach can lead to analytic expressions for $K_S(T)$ for anisotropic, multiband Type-II superconductors of various orbital symmetries that could aid in the interpretation of experimental data on unconventional superconductors., Comment: 21 published pages, 3 figures

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are quasi-two-dimensional layered compounds exhibiting strongly competing charge-density wave (CDW) and superconducting (SC) order parameters (OPs). The weak van der Waals interlayer bonding between hexagonal layers of octahedral or trigonal prismatic TMD building blocks allows for many polytypes. The non-superconducting $1T$ polytypes can have one or more CDWs. The $2H$ polytypes have two or more Fermi surfaces and saddle bands, allowing for dual orderings, which can be coexisting CDW and SC orderings, two SC gaps as in MgB$_2$, or two CDW gaps. The CDW transitions $T_{\rm CDW}$s usually greatly exceed the low superconducting $T_{\rm c}$s, their orbital OPs are generally highly anisotropic and can even contain nodes, are remarkably similar to the the high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprate pseudogaps, and the SC OPs can be greatly affected by their presence. In 2$H$-NbSe$_2$, the CDW renders its general $s$-wave SC OP orbital symmetry to be highly anisotropic and strongly reduces its Josephson coupling strength ($I_{\rm c}R_{\rm n}$) with Pb. Pressure and intercalation generally suppress the CDWs, enhancing $T_{\rm c}$. The misfit intercalation compound (LaSe)$_{1.14}$(NbSe$_2$) and many intercalated $2H$-TMDs, such as TaS$_2$(pyridine)$_{1/2}$, have completely incoherent $c$-axis transport, dimensional-crossover effects, and behave as stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions. Except for the anomalously large violation of the Pauli limit of the upper critical field of (LaSe)$_{1.14}$(NbSe$_2$), these properties are very similar to those of the cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ and of the organic layered superconductor, $\kappa$-(ET)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br. We calculate the angular and temperature $T$ dependencies of the upper critical field $H_{c2}(\theta,\phi,T)$ for the $C_{4v}$ point group helical $p$-wave states, assuming a single uniaxial ellipsoidal Fermi surface, Pauli limiting, and strong spin-orbit coupling that locks the spin-triplet $\vec{\bf d}$-vectors onto the layers. Good fits to the Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ $H_{c2,a}(\theta,T)$ data of Kittaka {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 80}, 174514 (2009)] are obtained. Helical states with $\vec{\bf d}(\vec{\bf k})=k_x\vec{\bf x}-k_y\vec{\bf y}$ and $k_y\vec{\bf x}+k_x\vec{\bf y}$ (or $k_x\vec{\bf x}+k_y\vec{\bf y}$ and $k_y\vec{\bf x}-k_x\vec{\bf y}$) produce $H_{c2}(90^{\circ},\phi,T)$ that greatly exceed (or do not exhibit) the four-fold azimuthal anisotropy magnitudes observed in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ by Kittaka {\it et al.} and by Mao {\it et al.} [Phys. We calculate the temperature $T$ and angular $(\theta,\phi)$ dependence of the upper critical induction $B_{c2}(\theta,\phi,T)$ for parallel-spin superconductors with an axially symmetric $p$-wave pairing interaction pinned to the lattice and a dominant ellipsoidal Fermi surface (FS). For all FS anisotropies, the chiral Scharnberg-Klemm state $B_{c2}(\theta,\phi,T)$ exceeds that of the chiral Anderson-Brinkman-Morel state, and exhibits a kink at $\theta=\theta^{*}(T,\phi)$, indicative of a first-order transition from its chiral, nodal-direction behavior to its non-chiral, antinodal-direction behavior. We model the normal state of ferromagnetic superconductors with two general ellipsoidal Fermi surfaces (FSs), one for each spin projection $\sigma=\{\uparrow,\downarrow\}$, each with its ferromagnetically split chemical potential $\mu_{\sigma}$ and its three distinct single particle effective masses, $\{m_{i\sigma}\}$, the geometric mean of which is $m_{\sigma}$. We study this model in the presence of an arbitrarily oriented magnetic induction, ${\bf B}=\mu_{0}{\bf H}+{\bf M_{0}}$, where ${\bf M_{0}}$ includes the Ising-like spontaneous ferromagnetic order, which for URhGe is in the $c$-axis direction above the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. We assume the low-$T$ total particle density $\Sigma_{\sigma} n_{\sigma}({\bf B})$ to be independent of ${\bf B}$, and obtain a self-consistent asymptotic expansion for $\sum_{\sigma}\Pi^{3/2}_{\sigma}({\bf B})$ in even powers of ${\bf B}$, where $\Pi_{\sigma}({\bf B})=m_{\sigma}({\bf B})\mu_{\sigma}({\bf B})$. We assume that the $\mu_{\sigma}({\bf B})$ are linear in ${\bf B}$ for both spins due to the Zeeman interaction and that the remaining even ${\bf B}$ dependence in the $\Pi_{\sigma}({\bf B})$ arises only from $m_{\downarrow}({\bf B})$. Our analogous expression for the Sommerfeld constant $\gamma({\bf B})$ leads to good fits to the $\gamma({\bf H})$ data of Aoki and Flouquet [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. \textbf{81}, 011003 (2012)] obtained for the ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe in the ferromagnetic, non-superconducting phase, with the applied magnetic field ${\bf H}$ along each of the three crystallographic directions. We discuss this model in terms of the reentrant superconducting properties of URhGe and UCoGe. From the photoluminescence of SiC microcrystals uniformly covering a rectangular mesa of the high transition temperature $T_c$ superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$, the local surface temperature $T({\bm r})$ was directly measured during simultaneous sub-THz emission from the $N\sim10^3$ intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) in the mesa. At high bias currents $I$ and low bath temperatures $T_{\rm bath}\lesssim~35$ K, the center of a large elliptical hot spot with $T({\bm r})> T_c$ jumps dramatically with little current-voltage characteristic changes. The hot spot doesn't alter the ubiquitous primary and secondary emission conditions: the ac Josephson relation and the electromagnetic cavity resonance excitation, respectively. Since the intense sub-THz emission was observed for high $T_{\rm bath}\gtrsim~50$ K in the low $I$ bias regime where hot spots are absent, hot spots can not provide the primary mechanisms for increasing the output power, the tunability, or for promoting the synchronization of the $N$ IJJs for the sub-THz emission, but can at best coexist non-mutualistically with the emission. No $T({\bm r})$ standing waves were observed.

We employ the Klemm-Clem transformations to map the equations of motion for the Green functions of a clean superconductor with a general ellipsoidal Fermi surface (FS) characterized by the effective masses $m_1, m_2$, and $m_3$ in the presence of an arbitrarily directed magnetic induction ${\bm B}=B(\sin\theta\cos\phi,\sin\theta\sin\phi,\cos\theta)$ onto those of a spherical FS. We then obtain the transformed gap equation for a transformed pairing interaction $\tilde{V}(\hat{\tilde{\bm k}},\hat{\tilde{\bm k}}')$ appropriate for any orbital order parameter symmetry. We use these results to calculate the upper critical induction $B_{c2}(\theta,\phi)$ for an orthorhombic ferromagnetic superconductor with transition temperatures $T_{\rm Curie}>T_c$. We assume the FS is split by strong spin-orbit coupling, with a single parallel-spin ($\uparrow\uparrow$) pairing interaction of the \textit{p}-wave polar state form locked onto the $\hat{\bm e}_3$ crystal axis normal to the spontaneous magnetization ${\bm M}_0\perp\hat{\bm e}_3$ due to the ferromagnetism. The orbital harmonic oscillator eigenvalues are modified according to $B\rightarrow B\alpha$, where $\alpha(\theta,\phi)=\sqrt{m_3/m}\sqrt{\cos^2\theta+\gamma^{-2}(\phi)\sin^2\theta}$, $\gamma^2(\phi)=m_3/(m_1\cos^2\phi+m_2\sin^2\phi)$ and $m=(m_1m_2m_3)^{1/3}$. At fixed $\phi$, the order parameter anisotropy causes $B_{c2}$ to exhibit a novel $\theta$-dependence, which for $\gamma^2(\phi)>3$ becomes a double peak at $0^{\circ}<\theta^{*}<90^{\circ}$ and at $180^{\circ}-\theta^{*}$, providing a sensitive bulk test of the order parameter orbital symmetry in both phases of URhGe and in similar compounds still to be discovered., Comment: 12 pages 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Continuous, coherent sub-terahertz radiation arises when a dc voltage is applied across a stack of the many intrinsic Josephson junctions in a Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d single crystal. The active junctions produce an equal number of I-V characteristic branches. Each branch radiates at a slightly tunable frequency obeying the ac Josephson relation. The overall output is broadly tunable and nearly independent of heating effects and internal cavity frequencies. We re-examined the angular dependence of the radiation from the intrinsic Josephson junctions in rectangular mesas of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$, in order to determine if the cavity mode part of the radiation arises from waves across the width $w$ or along the length $\ell$ of the mesas, associated with ``hot spots'' [Wang {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 105}, 057002 (2010)]. We derived analytic forms for the angular dependence expected in both cases for a general cavity mode in which the width of the mesa corresponds to an integer multiple of one-half the wavelength of the radiation. Assuming the coherent radiation from the $ac$ Josephson current source and the cavity magnetic surface current density source combine incoherently, fits to the data of Kadowaki {\it et al.} [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {\bf 79}, 023703 (2010)] on a mesa with mean $\ell/w=5.17$ for both wave directions using two models for the incoherent combination were made, which correspond to standing and traveling waves, respectively. The results suggest that the combined output from the uniform $ac$ Josephson current source plus a cavity wave forming along the rectangle length is equally probable as that of the combined output from the uniform $ac$ Josephson current plus a cavity wave across the width. However, for mesas in which $n\ell/2w$ is integral, where $n$ is the index of the rectangular TM$^z_{n,0}$ mode, it is shown that standing cavity mode waves along the length of the mesa do not radiate in the $xz$ plane perpendicular to the length of the mesa, suggesting experiments on such mesas could help to resolve the question., Comment: 11 pages 9 figures, submitted to J. Subterahertz radiation emitted from a variety of short rectangular-, square-, and disk-shaped mesas of intrinsic Josephson junctions fabricated from a Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d single crystal was studied from the observed I-V characteristics, far-infrared spectra, and spatial radiation patterns. In all cases, the radiation frequency satisfies the conditions both for the ac Josephson effect and for a mesa cavity resonance mode. The integer higher harmonics observed in all spectra imply that the ac Josephson effect plays the dominant role in the novel dual-source radiation mechanism., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PRL

The THz radiation emitted from rectangular mesas of single-crystal $\mathrm{Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta}}$ was studied using angular distribution measurements and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Unlike the recent theoretical predictions, the results provide strong evidence for a dual-source mechanism in which the uniform and non-uniform parts of the $ac$-Josephson current act as electric and magnetic current sources, respectively. The latter synchronizes with cavity modes of the mesa with integral harmonics of the fundamental radiation.

In superconducting ferromagnets for which the Curie temperature $T_{m}$ exceeds the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$, it was suggested that ferromagnetic spin fluctuations could lead to superconductivity with p-wave spin triplet Cooper pairing. Using the Stoner model of itinerant ferromagnetism, we study the feedback effect of the p-wave superconductivity on the ferromagnetism. Below $T_{c}$, the ferromagnetism is enhanced by the p-wave superconductivity. At zero temperature, the critical Stoner value for itinerant ferromagnetism is reduced by the strength of the p-wave pairing potential, and the magnetization increases correspondingly. More important, our results suggest that once Stoner ferromagnetism is established, $T_m$ is unlikely to ever be below $T_c$. We calculate the angular dependence of the radiation-zone output power and electric polarization of stimulated terahertz amplified radiation (STAR) emitted from a $dc$ voltage applied across cylindrical and rectangular stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions. During coherent emission, a spatially uniform $ac$ Josephson current density in the stack acts as a surface electric current density antenna source, leading to an harmonic radiation frequency spectrum, as in experiment, but absent in all cavity modesl of cylindrical mesas. We study single-ion and exchange anisotropy effects in equal-spin $s_1$ tetramer single molecule magnets exhibiting $T_d$, $D_{4h}$, $D_{2d}$, $C_{4h}$, $C_{4v}$, or $S_4$ ionic point group symmetry. We first write the group-invariant quadratic single-ion and symmetric anisotropic exchange Hamiltonians in the appropriate local coordinates. We then rewrite these local Hamiltonians in the molecular or laboratory representation, along with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriay (DM) and isotropic Heisenberg, biquadratic, and three-center quartic Hamiltonians. Using our exact, compact forms for the single-ion spin matrix elements, we evaluate the eigenstate energies analytically to first order in the microscopic anisotropy interactions, corresponding to the strong exchange limit, and provide tables of simple formulas for the energies of the lowest four eigenstate manifolds of ferromagnetic (FM) and anitiferromagnetic (AFM) tetramers with arbitrary $s_1$. For AFM tetramers, we illustrate the first-order level-crossing inductions for $s_1=1/2,1,3/2$, and obtain a preliminary estimate of the microscopic parameters in a Ni$_4$ from a fit to magnetization data. Accurate analytic expressions for the thermodynamics, electron paramagnetic resonance absorption and inelastic neutron scattering cross-section are given, allowing for a determination of three of the microscopic anisotropy interactions from the second excited state manifold of FM tetramers. We also predict that tetramers with symmetries $S_4$ and $D_{2d}$ should exhibit both DM interactions and multiferroic states, and illustrate our predictions for $s_1=1/2, 1$., Comment: 30 pages, 14 figures, submitted to Phys. For equal-spin $s_1$ tetramer single molecule magnets with ionic point groups $g=T_d, D_{4h}, D_{2d}, C_{4h}, C_{4v}$, and $S_4$, we write the group-invariant single-ion, Dzaloshinskii-Moriya, and symmetric anisotropic near-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor exchange Hamiltonians using the respective local axial and azimuthal vector groups. The anisotropic exchange renormalized near-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor isotropic exchange interactions are $\tilde{J}_g$ and $\tilde{J}_g'$. Using our exact, compact forms for the single-ion matrix elements, we evaluate the eigenstates of the full Hamiltonian to first order in the various interactions. There are two types of ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) tetramers. In Type I, $\tilde{J}_g'-\tilde{J}_g>0$, the tetramers act as two dimers with the maximal pair quantum numbers $s_{13}=s_{24}=2s_1$ at low temperature. Type II tetramers with $\tilde{J}_g'-\tilde{J}_g<0$ are frustrated, with minimal values of the pair quantum numbers $s_{13}$ and $s_{24}$ at low temperature. For both Type I and Type II AFM tetramers, we evaluate the first-order level-crossing inductions analytically for arbitary $s_1$, and illustrate the results for $s_1=1/2, 1, 3/2$. Accurate Hartree expressions for the thermodynamics, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) absorption and inelastic neutron scattering cross-section are given. We present a model of equal spin $s_1$ dimer single molecule magnets. The spins within each dimer interact via the Heisenberg and the most general set of four quadratic anisotropic spin interactions with respective strengths $J$ and $\{J_j\}$, and with the magnetic induction ${\bf B}$. We solve the model exactly for $s_1=1/2, 1, 5/2$, and for antiferromagnetic Heisenberg couplings ($J<0$), present ${\bf M}({\bf B})$ curves at low $T$ for these cases. Low-$T$ $C_V({\bf B})$ curves for $s_1=1/2$ and electron paramagnetic susceptibility $\chi({\bf B},\omega)$ for $s_1=1$ are also provided. For weak anisotropy interactions, we employ a perturbative treatment, and show that the Hartree and extended Hartree approximations lead to reliable analytic results at low $T$ and large $B$ for these quantities and for the inelastic neutron scattering cross-section $S({\bf B}, {\bf q},\omega)$. Our results are discussed with regard to existing ${\bf M}({\bf B})$ experiments on $s_1=5/2$ Fe$_2$ dimer single molecule magnets, and suggest that one of them contains a substantial amount of single-ion anisotropy, without any sizeable global spin anisotropy. We urge further experiments of the above types on single crystals of Fe$_2$ and on some $s_=9/2$ [Mn$_4$]$_2$ dimers, in order to elucidate the precise values of the various microscopic interactions., Comment: 30 pages, 25 figures, submitted to Phys. In this letter we present a general classification of integrable models of identical classical spins coupled via the isotropic Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Our constructive proof of integrability provides a solution scheme for the equations describing the time evolution of each spin. We show that for a broad class of Heisenberg couplings, it is possible to solve the equations of motion iteratively by building a hierarchy of spins, each of which precesses about the composite spin of the previous level. This leads to the identification of the frequencies of precession at each level., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

By expanding the wave function in plane waves, we use the pseudopotential method of density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation to calculate the effective magnetic coupling energies of the S=5/2 spins in the Fe2 dimer, approximated as Fe$_2$O$_2$H$_2$. Setting the Fe-O bond length at the value corresponding to the minimum total energy, we find the difference in antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic exchange energies as a function of the Fe-O-Fe bond angle $\theta$. The effective interaction is antiferromagnetic for 63$^{\circ}<\theta<105^{\circ}$, and is ferromagnetic otherwise. Full potential augmented plane wave calculations were also performed at $\theta=100,105^{\circ}$, confirming these results, and providing information relevant to the local anisotropy of the spin interactions., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 5 tables

We investigated the effect of intermolecular dipolar interactions on a cubic 3D ensemble of 5X5X4=100 nanomagnets, each with spin $S = 5$. We employed the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation to solve for the magnetization $M(B)$ curves for several values of the damping constant $\alpha$, the induction sweep rate, the lattice constant $a$, the temperature $T$, and the magnetic anisotropy field $H_A$. We find that the smaller the $\alpha$, the stronger the maximum induction required to produce hysteresis. The shape of the hysteresis loops also depends on the damping constant. We find further that the system magnetizes and demagnetizes at decreasing magnetic field strengths with decreasing sweep rates, resulting in smaller hysteresis loops. Variations of $a$ within realistic values (1.5 nm - 2.5 nm) show that the dipolar interaction plays an important role in the magnetic hysteresis by controlling the relaxation process. The $T$ dependencies of $\alpha$ and of $M$ are presented and discussed with regard to recent experimental data on nanomagnets. $H_A$ enhances the size of the hysteresis loops for external fields parallel to the anisotropy axis, but decreases it for perpendicular external fields. Finally, we reproduce and test an $M(B)$ curve for a 2D-system [M. Kayali and W. Saslow, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 70}, 174404 (2004)]. We show that its hysteretic behavior is only weakly dependent on the shape anisotropy field and the sweep rate, but depends sensitively upon the dipolar interactions. Although in 3D systems, dipole-dipole interactions generally diminish the hysteresis, in 2D systems, they strongly enhance it. For both square 2D and rectangular 3D lattices with ${\bm B}||(\hat{\bm x}+\hat{\bm y})$, dipole-dipole interactions can cause large jumps in the magnetization., Comment: 15 pages 14 figures, submitted to Phys. We calculate the critical current $I_c$ across in-plane (001) tilt grain boundary junctions of high temperature superconductors. We solve for the electronic states corresponding to the electron-doped cuprates, two slightly different hole-doped cuprates, and an extremely underdoped hole-doped cuprate in each half-space, and weakly connect the two half-spaces by either specular or random quasiparticle tunneling. We treat symmetric, straight, and fully asymmetric junctions with s-, extended-s-, or d$_{x^2-y^2}$-wave order parameters. For symmetric junctions with random grain boundary tunneling, our results are generally in agreement with the Sigrist-Rice form for ideal junctions that has been used to interpret ``phase-sensitive'' experiments consisting of such in-plane grain boundary junctions. For specular grain boundary tunneling across symmetric juncitons, our results depend upon the Fermi surface topology, but are usually rather consistent with the random facet model of Tsuei {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 73}, 593 (1994)]. Our results for asymmetric junctions of electron-doped cuparates are in agreement with the Sigrist-Rice form. However, ou resutls for asymmetric junctions of hole-doped cuprates show that the details of the Fermi surface topology and of the tunneling processes are both very important, so that the ``phase-sensitive'' experiments based upon the in-plane Josephson junctions are less definitive than has generally been thought., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, resubmitted to PRB

We present an exactly solvable model of equal spin $s_1$ dimer single molecule magnets. The spins within each dimer interact via the Heisenberg and the most general quadratic global and local (single-ion) anisotropic spin interactions, and with the magnetic induction ${\bf B}$. For antiferromagnetic couplings and $s_1>1/2$, the low temperature $T$ magnetization ${\bm M}({\bm B})$ exhibits $2s_1$ steps of universal height and midpoint slope, the $s$th step of which occurs at the non-universal level-crossing magnetic induction $B_{s,s_1}^{\rm lc}(\theta,\phi)$, where $\theta,\phi$ define the direction of ${\bm B}$. The specific heat $C_V$ exhibits zeroes as $T\to0$ at these $B_{s,s_1}^{\rm lc}(\theta,\phi)$ values, which are equally surrounded by universal peak pairs as $T\to0$. The non-universal $B_{s,s_1}^{\rm lc}(\theta,\phi)$ values lead to a rich variety of magnetization plateau behavior, the structure and anisotropy of which depend upon the various global and local anisotropic spin interaction energies. We solve the model exactly for $s_1=1/2$, 1, and 5/2, and present ${\bm M}({\bm B})$ and $C_V({\bm B})$ curves at low $T$ for these cases. For weakly anisotropic dimers, rather simple analytic formulas for ${\bm M}({\bm B})$ and $C_V({\bm B})$ at arbitrary $s_1$ accurately fit the exact solutions at sufficiently low $T$ or large $B$. An expression for $B_{s,s_1}^{\rm lc}(\theta,\phi)$ accurate to second order in the four independent anisotropy energies is derived. Our results are discussed with regard to existing experiments on $s_1=5/2$ Fe$_2$ dimers, suggesting further experiments on single crystals of these and some $s_1=9/2$ Mn$_4$]$_2$ dimers are warranted., Comment: 22 pages, 26 figures, submitted to PRR

Phase transitions in spinor Bose gases with ferromagnetic (FM) couplings are studied via mean-field theory. We show that an infinitesimal value of the coupling can induce a FM phase transition at a finite temperature always above the critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation. This contrasts sharply with the case of Fermi gases, in which the Stoner coupling $I_s$ can not lead to a FM phase transition unless it is larger than a threshold value $I_0$. The FM coupling also increases the critical temperatures of both the ferromagnetic transition and the Bose-Einstein condensation., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We present exact integral representations of the time-dependent spin-spin correlation functions for the classical Heisenberg N-spin `squashed' equivalent neighbor model, in which one spin is coupled via the Heisenberg exchange interaction with strength $J_1$ to the other N-1 spins, each of which is coupled via the Heisenberg exchange coupling with strength $J_2$ to the remaining N-2 spins. At low temperature T we find that the N spins oscillate in four modes, one of which is a central peak for a semi-infinite range of the values of the exchange coupling ratio. For the N=4 case of four spins on a squashed tetrahedron, detailed numerical evaluations of these results are presented. As $T\to\infty$, we calculate exactly the long-time asymptotic behavior of the correlation functions for arbitrary N, and compare our results with those obtained for three spins on an isosceles triangle., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys. Takano {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 65}, 140513 (2002) and unpublished] made Josephson junctions from single crystal whiskers of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ crossed an angle $\phi_0$ about the $c$ axis. From the mesa structures that formed at the cross-whisker interface, they inferred a critical current density $J_c(\phi_0)$. Like the single crystal results of Li {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 83}, 4160 (1999)], we show that the whisker data are unlikely to result from a predominantly d-wave order parameter. Li {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 83}, 4160 (1999)] prepared atomically clean Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ (BSCCO) Josephson junctions between identical single crystal cleaves stacked and twisted an angle $\phi_0$ about the c axis. For each bicrystal, the ratio $J_c^J/J_c^S$ of the c-axis twist junction critical current density to that across either single crystal part is unity, independent of $\phi_0$ and the ratio $A^J/A^S$ of junction areas. From extensive theoretical studies involving a variety of tunneling and superconducting order parameter (OP) forms, we conclude that the results provide strong evidence for incoherent c-axis tunneling and that the dominant OP is s-wave for $T\le T_c$. Recently, Takano {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 65}, 140315(R) (2002)] obtained results from BSCCO whisker twist junctions which also rule out a pure d-wave OP, but which are surprisingly suggestive of coherent c-axis tunneling form small Fermi surface hot spots., Comment: 5 pages, 11 figures, invited talk at LT23, to be published in Physica B

We calculate the static and dynamic properties of single crystal, single molecule magnets consisting of equal spin $S=1/2$ or 5/2 dimers. The spins in each dimer interact with each other via the Heisenberg exchange interaction and with the magnetic induction ${\bf B}$ via the Zeeman interaction, and interdimer interactions are negligible. For antiferromagnetic couplings, the static magnetization and specific heat exhibit interesting low temperature $T$ and strong ${\bf B}$ quantum effects. We calculate the frequency spectrum of the Fourier transform of the real part of the time autocorrelation function ${\cal C}_{11}(t)$ for arbitrary $T, {\bf B}$, and compare our results with those obtained for classical spins. We study analytically the effects of inhomogeneous pairing interactions in short coherence length superconductors, using a spatially varying Bogoliubov-deGennes model. Within the Born approximation, it reproduces all of the standard Abrikosov-Gor'kov pairbreaking and gaplessness effects, even in the absence of actual magnetic impurities. For pairing disorder on a single site, the T-matrix gives rise to bound states within the BCS gap. Our results are compared with recent scanning tunneling microscopy measurements on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ with Zn or Ni impurities., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to PRL

We reduce the autocorrelation function $C_{11}(t)$ of the equivalent neighbor model of $N$ classical spins exhibiting Heisenberg dynamics and exchange coupling $J$ to quadrature. As the temperature $T\to\infty$, $C_{11}(t)\propto t^{-N}$ for $Jt>>1$. At low $T$, the antiferromagnetic $C_{11}(t)$ is a simple function of $(JT)^{1/2}t$, exhibiting strong frustration, but the ferromagnetic $C_{11}(t)$ oscillates in a single mode the frequency of which approaches $NJ$ as $T\to0$. We conjecture that as $T\to\infty$, the near-neighbor correlation functions of $N$-spin classical Heisenberg rings are simply obtained from these results., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL

At arbitrary temperature $T$, we solve for the dynamics of single molecule magnets composed of three classical Heisenberg spins either on a chain with two equal exchange constants $J_1$, or on an isosceles triangle with a third, different exchange constant $J_2$. As $T\rightrarrow\infty$, the Fourier transforms and long-time asymptotic behaviors of the two-spin time correlation functions are evaluated exactly. The lack of translational symmetry on a chain or an isosceles triangle yields time correlation functions that differ strikingly from those on an equilateral trinagle with $J_1=J_2$. At low $T$, the Fourier transforms of the two autocorrelation functions with $J_1\ne J_2$ show one and four modes, respectively. For a semi-infinite $J_2/J_1$ range, one mode is a central peak. A model relevant for the study of certain molecular magnets is the ring of N=4 classical spins with equal near-neighbor isotropic Heisenberg exchange interactions. Assuming classical Heisenberg spin dynamics, we solve explicitly for the time evolution of each of the spins. Exact triple integral representations are derived for the auto, near-neighbor, and next-nearest-neighbor time correlation functions for any temperature. At infinite temperature, the correlation functions are reduced to quadrature. We then evaluate the Fourier transforms of these functions in closed form, which are double integrals. At low temperatures, the Fourier transform functions explicitly demonstrate the presence of magnons. Our exact results for the infinite temperature correlation functions in the long-time asymptotic limit differ qualitatively from those obtained assuming diffusive spin dynamics. Whether such explicitly non-hydrodynamic behavior would be maintained for large-N rings is discussed., Comment: 18 pages, 21 figures
