9. Coping Strategies as Mediators within the Relationship between Emotion-Regulation and Perceived Stress in Teachers

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to examine whether different coping strategies (focus on positive, support coping, active coping and evasive coping) mediate the relationship between emotion-regulation (i.e., emotion acceptance skills, emotion resilience skills and emotion regulation skills) and perceived stress in physical education (PE) teachers. The sample consisted of 457 PE pre-service teachers. Results show that evasive coping strategies partly negatively mediate the relationship between emotion resilience skills and emotion regulation and perceived stress. Therefore, emotion-regulation might protect against using evasive coping strategies, which have been found to be related to higher stress in previous studies.

17. Stress in Physical Education Teachers: A Systematic Review of Sources, Consequences, and Moderators of Stress

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to identify sources of stress, consequences of chronic stress and moderators of stress in physical education teachers and to formulate implications for future research and teacher education. Methods: The initial search identified 2483 publications, including 47 that met the inclusion criteria. Results: The most important sources of stress in physical education teachers were the curriculum, inadequate facilities/equipment, the low status of PE and students´ discipline problems. Regarding the consequences of chronic stress, the majority of studies assessed burnout and reported low to moderate levels of burnout in general. However, of the studies that reported percentages, 20-25% of physical education teachers indicated high levels of burnout. Conclusions: Regarding the relationship between sources of stress and consequences of chronic stress in physical education teachers, future studies should (a) take into account the whole stress process (b) use more adequate measures for stress and (c) address potential moderators of stress. In terms of practical implications, PE teachers should receive an adequate pre- and in-service training that aims at being aware of the main sources of stress in PE teachers and building up adequate coping strategies. In addition, PE teacher education should consider interventions to prevent health consequences of stress such as voice disorders.

33. Presentation and evaluation of the stress lab - A tool to prepare physical education students to handle stressful teaching situations.

Abstract

Introduction and study purpose: Research indicate that prospective physical education teachers experience stress. To address this, the stress lab was developed to prepare physical education students to handle stressful teaching situations. The tool comprises an e-learning unit for acquiring knowledge on stress-related topics and a practical unit for hands-on experience in handling stressful teaching situations demonstrated through videos. This paper aims to introduce the stress lab as an interactive tool for physical education students and outlines three evaluation studies. Method: The initial study sought to confirm whether, upon completing the e-learning unit, participating physical education students accepted the tool and experienced positive outcomes, as demonstrated through knowledge about stress. The second study aimed to evaluate the appropriateness of the videos used in the practical unit. The third study aimed to verify whether, upon completing the practical unit, the participating physical education students accepted the unit and experienced positive outcomes, presented in the form of stress-related practical competences. Results: The results of the first study showed high levels of acceptance and stress-related knowledge after physical education students participated in the e-learning unit. Following an assessment of the appropriateness of the videos in the second study, six videos were selected for the practical unit. In the third study, physical education students reported a high level of acceptance and a high level of competence after participating in the practical unit. Conclusion: From this, various implications in terms of content and didactics can be deduced for the stress lab. 38. Feeling lonely in the lab: A literature review and partial examination of recent loneliness induction procedures for experiments

Abstract

Few laboratory experiments have been conducted in loneliness research in the past. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to review, partially investigate and discuss loneliness induction procedures in order to facilitate future laboratory experiments in loneliness research (e.g. to examine the link between loneliness and social cognition). Previous studies have found both unconscious (i.e. professional hypnosis) and conscious (i.e. recalling and calling out lonely experiences) procedures to be successful in inducing loneliness. Another conscious procedure (i.e. recalling and writing down lonely experiences) that has been described in recent literature has not yet been examined. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine this procedure using a one-group before-after design. However, this procedure, in which the participants had to recall and write down two lonely situations, was not found to significantly induce loneliness. Of 16 participants, only three reported at least some higher feelings of loneliness following this procedure.

45. Motivational effects of digital media on students in physical education: a scoping review.

Abstract

Introduction & study purpose Current research indicates that digital media (DM) may positively impact students' motivation in physical education (PE). However, the theoretical details behind such motivational effects remain to be established. This scoping review provides an overview of the research on the motivational effects of DM in PE and discusses the results in the context of self-determination theory as a suitable basis for PE. Methods This scoping review was conducted according to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Six databases (Eric, Psyndex, Pubmed, PsycInfo, SportDISCUS, Web of Science) were searched using the following inclusion criteria: (1) peerreviewed publication, (2) empirical study, (3) English, (4) published in the last 15 years, and (5) deals with the motivational effects of DM on students in PE. Results In total, 14 studies were included in this review. The studies aimed to measure motivational effects of DM use in PE in three categories: intrinsic motivation, behavioral regulation, and basic psychological need (BPN) satisfaction. Eleven studies reported positive motivational changes in at least one of the three categories. Based on the included studies, five uses of DM in PE were identified: instruction, feedback, monitoring, knowledge transfer, and entertainment. Discussion & Conclusion Overall, the use of DM in PE can decrease controlled and increase self-determined forms of behavioral regulation, and enhance BPN satisfaction. However, this scoping review shows that further research is needed to investigate which processes lead to motivational effects and how these can be explained by psychological theories. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze whether the social compensation of performance drops in a team setting depends on the relationship quality. Two experiments were conducted. Experiment 1: In a team‐building condition, the relationship quality between subject and confederate was manipulated. The performance situation consisted of an isometric strength task. A joint team result had to be achieved in a second run, whereby the subject received manipulated feedback on the confederate's performance, hence suggesting a sudden drop. The results showed no compensation effect. Experiment 2: Given that one potential reason for the lack of effect appeared to be the isometric holding task, the study design was maintained, but the task was modified into a dynamic one. Performance drops were compensated for. However, the relationship quality did not affect compensation behavior. It is possible that implicit team building through the necessary joint agreement on goals interfered with the effect in both conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Context: Low back pain ( LBP) is a serious health problem, both in the general population as well as in athletes. Research has shown that psychosocial aspects, such as dysfunctional pain responses, play a significant role in the chroni fication of LBP. Recent research supports the relevance of the multidisciplinary concept of body image in the interpretation of LBP. Objective: To examine the differences in 2 psychosocial aspects, body image and pain responses, between athletes and nonathletes with LBP. Design: Cross - sectional design. Setting: The questionnaires were distributed in the course of LBP treatment . Participants. Data from 163 athletes (mean age = 28 .69 [ 9 . 61 y ) and 75 nonathletes (mean age = 39 . 34 [ 12 . 631 y ) were collected. Interventions: Data were collected by questionnaires assessing body image, pain behavior, training activity, and LBP . Main Outcome Measures : To examine group differences between athletes and nonathletes regarding body image and pain behavion the authors performed 2-way analyses of variance with Bonferroni post hoc tests. Results: The results showed (1) a significant main effect regarding pain responses and body image, showing that participants with eustress endurance or adaptive pain behavior revealed a more positive body image in both groups compared with participants with distress endurance or fear-avoidance behavior. and (2) a significant main effect for the factor group in the body image dimension of physical efficacy, indicating a more positive body image for athletes. Conclusion: These results suggest that considering multiple risk factors for LBP, such as body image and dysfunctional pain behavior, as well as subgrouping, might be valuable for research and for broadening therapy options.
