English writers in the late 17th and early 18th centuries were significantly concerned with sociability, partly from the desire to restrain the disorder that arose from various expressions of artistic and religious enthusiasm. However, human sociability also had negative aspects. Enthusiasm might have been seen as a manifestation of a lack of self, and could have served as a correction to theatricality.

The history of coffeehouses in England acts as a component for understanding larger social trends in 18th-century England. These small businesses reflected growing prosperity and increased international trade, acting as sites for commercial transactions and political and literary discussion. Early in the Restoration, coffeehouses were often unfavorably compared with inns, taverns, churches and the courts, but after 1688 they began to replace the royal court as the origin for civil behavior.

The depiction of 18th century patterns of publicity of men and privacy of women reveals the degree of sex-differentiation in public and private spheres.
