1. Measurement noise scaling laws for cellular representation learning

Abstract

Deep learning scaling laws predict how performance improves with increased model and dataset size. Here we identify measurement noise in data as another performance scaling axis, governed by a distinct logarithmic law. We focus on representation learning models of biological single cell genomic data, where a dominant source of measurement noise is due to molecular undersampling. We introduce an information-theoretic metric for cellular representation model quality, and find that it scales with sampling depth. A single quantitative relationship holds across several model types and across several datasets. We show that the analytical form of this relationship can be derived from a simple Gaussian noise model, which in turn provides an intuitive interpretation for the scaling law. Finally, we show that the same relationship emerges in image classification models with respect to two types of imaging noise, suggesting that measurement noise scaling may be a general phenomenon. Scaling with noise can serve as a guide in generating and curating data for deep learning models, particularly in fields where measurement quality can vary dramatically between datasets.

Abstract

Mutual information (MI) is a general measure of statistical dependence with widespread application across the sciences. However, estimating MI between multi-dimensional variables is challenging because the number of samples necessary to converge to an accurate estimate scales unfavorably with dimensionality. In practice, existing techniques can reliably estimate MI in up to tens of dimensions, but fail in higher dimensions, where sufficient sample sizes are infeasible. Here, we explore the idea that underlying low-dimensional structure in high-dimensional data can be exploited to faithfully approximate MI in high-dimensional settings with realistic sample sizes. We develop a method that we call latent MI (LMI) approximation, which applies a nonparametric MI estimator to low-dimensional representations learned by a simple, theoretically-motivated model architecture. Using several benchmarks, we show that unlike existing techniques, LMI can approximate MI well for variables with $> 10^3$ dimensions if their dependence structure has low intrinsic dimensionality. Finally, we showcase LMI on two open problems in biology. First, we approximate MI between protein language model (pLM) representations of interacting proteins, and find that pLMs encode non-trivial information about protein-protein interactions. Second, we quantify cell fate information contained in single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) measurements of hematopoietic stem cells, and find a sharp transition during neutrophil differentiation when fate information captured by scRNA-seq increases dramatically.

Abstract

The main science aim of the BlackGEM array is to detect optical counterparts to gravitational wave mergers. Additionally, the array will perform a set of synoptic surveys to detect Local Universe transients and short time-scale variability in stars and binaries, as well as a six-filter all-sky survey down to ~22nd mag. The BlackGEM Phase-I array consists of three optical wide-field unit telescopes. Each unit uses an f/5.5 modified Dall-Kirkham (Harmer-Wynne) design with a triplet corrector lens, and a 65cm primary mirror, coupled with a 110Mpix CCD detector, that provides an instantaneous field-of-view of 2.7~square degrees, sampled at 0.564\arcsec/pixel. The total field-of-view for the array is 8.2 square degrees. Each telescope is equipped with a six-slot filter wheel containing an optimised Sloan set (BG-u, BG-g, BG-r, BG-i, BG-z) and a wider-band 440-720 nm (BG-q) filter. Each unit telescope is independent from the others. Cloud-based data processing is done in real time, and includes a transient-detection routine as well as a full-source optimal-photometry module. BlackGEM has been installed at the ESO La Silla observatory as of October 2019. After a prolonged COVID-19 hiatus, science operations started on April 1, 2023 and will run for five years. Aside from its core scientific program, BlackGEM will give rise to a multitude of additional science cases in multi-colour time-domain astronomy, to the benefit of a variety of topics in astrophysics, such as infant supernovae, luminous red novae, asteroseismology of post-main-sequence objects, (ultracompact) binary stars, and the relation between gravitational wave counterparts and other classes of transients, Comment: Published in PASP

Abstract

Hydrogen production through anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) offers cost advantages over proton-exchange membrane counterparts, mainly due to the good oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of platinum-group-metal-free catalysts in alkaline environments. However, the electrochemical oxidation of ionomers at the OER catalyst interface can decrease the local electrode pH, which limits AEMWE performance. Various strategies at the single-cell-level have been explored to address this issue. This work reviews the current understanding of electrochemical ionomer oxidation and strategies to mitigate it, providing our perspective on each approach. Our analysis highlights the competitive adsorption strategy as particularly promising for mitigating ionomer oxidation. This Perspective also outlines future directions for advancing high-performance alkaline AEMWEs and other energy devices using hydrocarbon ionomers.

Abstract

We present radio coverage of the 2019 outburst of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658, obtained with MeerKAT. We compare these data to contemporaneous X-ray and optical measurements in order to investigate the coupling between accretion and jet formation in this system, while the optical lightcurve provides greater detail of the outburst. The reflaring activity following the main outburst peak was associated with a radio re-brightening, indicating a strengthening of the jet in this phase of the outburst. We place quasi-simultaneous radio and X-ray measurements on the global radio:X-ray plane for X-ray binaries, and show they reside in the same region of luminosity space as previous outburst measurements, but significantly refine the correlation for this source. We also present upper limits on the radio emission from the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar MAXI J0911-655 and the transitional Z/Atoll-type transient XTE J1701-462. In the latter source we also confirm that nearby large-scale structures reported in previous radio observations of the source are persistent over a period of ~15 years, and so are almost certainly background radio galaxies and not associated with the X-ray transient., Comment: Contains 9 pages and 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

Colour-magnitude diagrams reveal a population of blue (hot) sub-luminous objects with respect to the main sequence. These hot sub-luminous stars are the result of evolutionary processes that require stars to expel their obscuring, hydrogen-rich envelopes to reveal the hot helium core. As such, these objects offer a direct window into the hearts of stars that are otherwise inaccessible to direct observation. We showcase MeerLICHT's capabilities of detecting faint hot subdwarfs and identifying the dominant frequency in the photometric variability of these compact hot stars, in comparison to their $Gaia$ DR3 data. We hunt for oscillations, which will be an essential ingredient for accurately probing stellar interiors in future asteroseismology. Comparative MeerLICHT and $Gaia$ colour-magnitude diagrams are presented as a way to select hot subdwarfs from our sample. A dedicated frequency determination technique is developed and applied to the selected candidates to determine their dominant variability using time-series data from MeerLICHT and $Gaia$ DR3. We explore the power of both datasets in determining the dominant frequency. Using the $g-i$ colour, MeerLICHT offers a colour-magnitude diagram that is comparable in quality to that of $Gaia$ DR3. The MeerLICHT colour-colour diagrams allow for the study of different stellar populations. The frequency analysis of MeerLICHT and $Gaia$ DR3 data demonstrates the superiority of our MeerLICHT multi-colour photometry in estimating the dominant frequency compared to the sparse $Gaia$ DR3 data. MeerLICHT's multi-band photometry leads to the discovery of high-frequency faint subdwarfs. Our MeerLICHT results are a proof-of-concept of the capacity of the BlackGEM instrument currently in the commissioning stage at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile., Comment: Accepted from A&A journal. Abstract

Transient X-ray spectroscopies have become ubiquitous in studying photoexcited dynamics in solar energy materials due to their sensitivity to carrier occupations and local chemical or structural dynamics. The interpretation of solid-state photoexcited dynamics, however, is complicated by the core-hole perturbation and the resulting many-body dynamics. Here, an ab initio, Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) approach is developed that can incorporate photoexcited state effects for solid-state materials. The extreme ultraviolet (XUV) absorption spectra for the ground, photoexcited, and thermally expanded states of first row transition metal oxides - $TiO_2, \alpha-Cr_2O_3, \beta-MnO_2, \alpha-Fe_2O_3, Co_3O_4, NiO, CuO, and ZnO$ - are calculated to demonstrate the accuracy of this approach. The theory is used to decompose the core-valence excitons into the separate components of the X-ray transition Hamiltonian for each of the transition metal oxides investigated. The decomposition provides a physical intuition about the origins of XUV spectral features as well as how the spectra will change following photoexcitation. The method is easily generalized to other K, L, M, and N edges to provide a general approach for analyzing transient X-ray absorption or reflection data.

Abstract

Technological advancements have facilitated the implementation of realistic, terrestrial-based complex 33-beam galactic cosmic radiation simulations (GCR Sim) to now probe central nervous system functionality. This work expands considerably on prior, simplified GCR simulations, yielding new insights into responses of male and female mice exposed to 40-50 cGy acute or chronic radiations relevant to deep space travel. Results of the object in updated location task suggested that exposure to acute or chronic GCR Sim induced persistent impairments in hippocampus-dependent memory formation and reconsolidation in female mice that did not manifest robustly in irradiated male mice. Interestingly, irradiated male mice, but not females, were impaired in novel object recognition and chronically irradiated males exhibited increased aggressive behavior on the tube dominance test. Electrophysiology studies used to evaluate synaptic plasticity in the hippocampal CA1 region revealed significant reductions in long-term potentiation after each irradiation paradigm in both sexes. Interestingly, network-level disruptions did not translate to altered intrinsic electrophysiological properties of CA1 pyramidal cells, whereas acute exposures caused modest drops in excitatory synaptic signaling in males. Ultrastructural analyses of CA1 synapses found smaller postsynaptic densities in larger spines of chronically exposed mice compared to controls and acutely exposed mice. Myelination was also affected by GCR Sim with acutely exposed mice exhibiting an increase in the percent of myelinated axons; however, the myelin sheathes on small calibur ( 0.5 mm) axons were thinner when compared to controls. Present findings might have been predicted based on previous studies using single and mixed beam exposures and provide further evidence that space-relevant radiation exposures disrupt critical cognitive processes and underlying neuronal network-level plasticity, albeit not to the extent that might have been previously predicted.

Abstract

Transient X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectroscopies have become invaluable tools for studying photoexcited dynamics due to their sensitivity to carrier occupations and local chemical or structural changes. One of the most studied mate-rials using transient XUV spectroscopy is $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ because of its rich photoexcited dynamics, including small polaron formation. The interpretation of carrier and polaron effects in $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ is currently done using a semi-empirical method that is not transferrable to most materials. Here, an ab initio, Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) approach is developed that can incorporate photoexcited state effects for arbitrary materials systems. The accuracy of this approach is proven by calculating the XUV absorption spectra for the ground, photoexcited, and polaron states of $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$. Furthermore, the theoretical approach allows for the projection of the core-valence excitons and different components of the X-ray transition Hamiltonian onto the band structure, providing new insights into old measurements. From this information, a physical intuition about the origins and nature of the transient XUV spectra can be built. A route to extracting electron and hole energies is even shown possible for highly angular momentum split XUV peaks. This method is easily generalized to K, L, M, and N edges to provide a general approach for analyzing transient X-ray absorption or reflection data.

44. Parent Engagement with a School-Based Health Center Consent Process Predicts Student Attendance and School Transition

Abstract

Background: School-based health centers (SBHCs) fill critical pediatric health care access gaps but typically require parental consent for enrollment. Families' responses to SBHC consent form outreach efforts may reflect broader school engagement. This study investigated whether SBHC consent form return predicted subsequent chronic absenteeism and school transition, indicators of student and family school engagement. Methods: Multivariable logistic regression was used to compare the odds of being chronically absent or transitioning out of a US elementary/middle school (n = 1917) during 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 for those who declined SBHC enrollment or did not return a consent form, compared to those who enrolled. Results: Compared to enrolled students, those who declined had 78% lower odds of chronic absenteeism [95% CI: 0.09, 0.54]. Families who did not respond had 2.8 times greater odds of their student transitioning out of school [95% CI: 2.15, 3.58] but were no more likely to be chronically absent. Conclusions: Consent form return may predict aspects of broader students and family school engagement.

Abstract

One of the many aims of colleges and universities is helping students to develop leadership knowledge and skills in a global world. This is recognized to be a complex goal that, among other influences, involves identity development and how students understand themselves as leaders. Developing a leadership identity is a multifaceted process that can be influenced by many factors including time, external events, intentional programs and positions, and transitional experiences. This study focuses on leadership identity development for college women, a group that has become a focus of increasing attention in recent years. The study also considers identity development during transitions, such as that thrust upon all of us by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, the transitional experience is centered and defined as an event that results in changed roles, relationships, routines, and assumptions.In this dissertation, specifically, I explore how undergraduate women make meaning of their formal leadership experiences during a transition in their personal and/or professional lives, with an emphasis on the process of leadership identify development. The study focuses on students' experiences reported over time during the transition to remote education at the start of and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings from this study have implications for higher education practice, college student leadership development, and formal and informal training and development for women leaders on campus.
