The Auger spectrum and the relevant angular distribution and spin polarization parameters have been obtained, both, experimentally and numerically for the resonant Auger decay of the photoexcited Ar*(2p[sub 3/2][sup -1]4s[sub 1/2])[sub J=1] state. The experiment has been performed using linearly and circularly polarized light and by means of a time-of-flight electron analyzer and a Mott polarimeter. The dynamical as well as the transferred spin polarization of the emitted electrons have been determined. The theoretical data have been obtained within a relativistic distorted wave approximation applying a relaxed orbital method. Our numerical results obtained within an 8 configuration state function calculation are compared to the experimental data for the transferred spin polarization. Good agreement to the experiment has been found. Though single fine structure lines show a large dynamic spin polarization the theoretical data yield almost vanishing dynamic spin polarization for the Auger lines. We present our results for resonant Auger emission after deep inner shell electron impact excitation. A full ab initio relativistic distorted wave approximation is applied where intermediate coupling between the different configuration state functions of the resonantly excited states and exchange interaction with the continuum has been taken into account. While several investigations have been published on electron impact excitation of the outer electronic shells, for a subsequent Auger emission, we present, to our knowledge for the first time, data on alignment and orientation for deep inner shell excitation. Opposite to the case of photoexcitation, the calculation of alignment and orientation is no longer purely analytic but is a complicated function of the electron impact energy. As example we consider the angular distribution and spin polarization of the resonantly excited Ar*(2p[sup -1][sub 3/2] → 4s[sub l/2]) L[sub 3]M[sub 2,3]M[sub 2,3] Auger spectrum after electron impact excitation. Within a two-step model we are able to determine all dynamic parameters for the primary excitation process, i.e. alignment and orientation, as well as angular distribution and spin polarization parameters describing the Auger decay dynamics.
