Abstract

The world’s leading indoor air quality guidelines provide for the identification of certain parameters with a specific limit value based on the latest empirical measurements, however, most of them do not have legal coverage and are voluntary. This leads to unequal assessment of indoor air quality, because there is an identifiable difference between the limit values set out in the various guidelines. And these values would be related to the results obtained during the experimental activities of the application of the specific parameters and the interpretation of their effects on human health. The aim of this IAQ guideline and IAQ certification review was to develop IAQ label for Nordic countries and to find gaps the legislation established by the Latvian government. The development of indoor air quality labels provides an opportunity to maintain and promote the optimal functionality of human physiological processes and the sustainability of the building.

2. Perceptions, Choices and Usage of Ecological Household Chemicals: Results from an Online Citizen Survey in Latvia

Abstract

Chemical products are widely used in our everyday activities. As the availability and accessibility of ecological chemical products increases, the usage of these products should be promoted and encouraged since it is better for the environmental and human health. However, there is a gap between individual perceptions on these products and actual usage, therefore the aim of this study was to compare the knowledge and perceptions on chemical products and their labelling in Latvian adult citizens and whether this knowledge impacts their choices and usage of chemical products. An online survey was used to gather data from 412 respondents (21.8 % (n = 90) men, 78.2 % (n = 322) women, average age 39.5 years, 77.2 % (n = 318) had obtained higher education). 62.2 % (n = 237) of respondents use household chemicals every day: 6.7 % (n = 25) more than five times a day, 25.9 % (n = 99) two to five times a day and 29.6 % (n = 113) at least once a day. Although 78.2 % (n = 257) of respondents indicated that it was important to them that the household chemicals are ‘ecofriendly’, only 7.4 % (n = 28) of them responded that they always purchase eco-labelled chemical products and 60.1 % (n = 229) do it sometimes. Almost a third of respondents (28.9 %, n = 110) have not payed attention whether the product has an eco-label. Survey data also shows that 91.9 % (n = 351) respondents’ choice regarding household chemicals is affected by their previous experience, including product effectiveness, product ‘ecofriendliness’ (62.1 %, n = 237) and product price (59.2 %, n = 226). Many respondents have correctly identified eco-labels, but at the same time, more than a third of respondents (17.9–39.8 %) mistake other labels to be eco-labels as well.

6. Youth Participation in a Wheelchair Tennis Program from a Social Relational Perspective

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning of a wheelchair tennis program from the perspective of youth athletes, their caregivers and coaches through the lens of the social-relational model of disability. Data collection included field notes, focus group interviews and semi-structured individual interviews with six wheelchair tennis athletes (four males, two females) and eight adults (four mothers, one father and one grandmother, one program coordinator and one wheelchair tennis coach). A thematic analysis utilizing social relational model identified patterns within and across the data, allowing for description and interpretation of the meaning and importance of the themes. Two primary themes linked to both positive and negative experiences were identified: (1) disablism in everyday life; and (2) constructing 'competent' identities on the tennis court. The themes, taken together, describe the challenges faced, and the accomplishments achieved by the athletes and their families within a culture that marked them as different. Drawing on a social relational lens fosters an appreciation of anti-ableist aspects of sporting environments, simultaneously recognizing athletes' experiences of surrounding structural and psychological barriers.

Abstract

In recent years, research on the benefits of physical activity and sport for disabled youth has received scholarly attention. For example, adapted or inclusive youth sport has been put forth as a facilitator of both health-enhancing physical activity and psychosocial development for disabled youth. Disability sport can also be a tool for social change by challenging issues of isolation and inequality (Richardson et al., 2017), particularly in non-westernized cultures. However, research on the benefits of disability sports is limited to North American or western European contexts. In this article, we examined the participation of disabled young athletes, their families and coaches from the country of Latvia in the sport of wheelchair tennis. Qualitative methodology revealed three themes: (1) Making New Friends, (2) Becoming Stronger, (3) and Being Part of a Group. For the athletes, their families, and coaches, wheelchair tennis was not simply about playing the sport, but learning to overcome multiple challenges (e.g., environmental and psychological barriers, social attitudes), enriching their social experiences and improving the quality of lives. 15. Spread of Heterobasidion genotypes in Norway spruce stands on drained peat soil in Latvia

Abstract

According to several earlier studies, the prevalence of Heterobasidion in peat soils is generally lower compared to mineral soils. However, in some Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) stands on drained peat soils in Latvia, serious damage caused by Heterobasidion root rot has been observed. To determine the spread of Heterobasidion spp. on peat soil, we analyzed the structure of Heterobasidion genets in 20 study plots established in disease centres in 11 spruce-dominated peatland forest stands. A total of 381 standing spruce trees and 244 spruce stumps were examined for Heterobasidion infection. The fungus was isolated from 181 spruce trees (47.5%) and 43 stumps (17.6%). In total, 101 different Heterobasidion genotypes (genets) were identified (on average five genotypes per study plot). The average number of trees infected by a single Heterobasidion genotype was 2.2. Most of the genets (68.3%) had infected only one tree or stump while the rest of the genets (31.7%) had infected several trees and stumps. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the spread of Heterobasidion genotypes in peatland forest stands. To reduce losses caused by Heterobasidion root rot in spruce forests on drained peat soils, it is important to prevent primary spore infections as well as to avoid planting pure spruce stands with high density. Selon de nombreuses etudes anterieures, la prevalence de l'Heterobasidion dans les sols tourbeux est generalement plus faible comparativement aux sols mineraux. Toutefois, on a constate des dommages importants causes par le pourridie d'heterobasidion dans certains peuplements forestiers d'epinettes de Norvege (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) sur des sols tourbeux draines en Lettonie. Afin de determiner la propagation d'especes d'Heterobasidion sur des sols tourbeux, nous avons analyse la structure des genets d'Heterobasidion dans 20 placettes d'echantillonnage etablies dans 11 centres de lutte contre la maladie de peuplements de tourbieres forestieres dominees par les epinettes. Un total de 381 epinettes sur pied et de 244 souches d'epinettes ont ete examinees pour y detecter une infection d'Heterobasidion. Le champignon a ete isole sur 181 epinettes (47,5%) et 43 souches (17,6%). Au total, 101 genotypes (genets) differents d'Heterobasidion ont ete identifies (cinq genotypes en moyenne par placette d'echantillonnage). Le nombre moyen d'arbres infectes par un seul genotype d'Heterobasidion etait de 2,2. La plupart des genets (68,3%) avaient infecte un seul arbre ou une seule souche alors que le reste des genets (31,7%) avaient infecte de nombreux arbres et de nombreuses souches. 16. Teachers' Preparedness to Deliver Remote Adapted Physical Education from Different European Perspectives: Updates to the European Standards in Adapted Physical Activity

Abstract

When schools were closed due to the COVID-19 restrictions, teachers were challenged to engage children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) through remote teaching, particularly in physical education. The European Standards in Adapted Physical Activity (EUSAPA) have been used to define the competencies of adapted physical education (APE) teachers. Through a consensus building exercise, the standards were updated in this paper to include technologically supported pedagogy. Evidence from 125 APE teachers, who completed a technological communication inventory, modified versions of the technology, pedagogy and content knowledge scale (TPACK-21), and self-efficacy on including students with disabilities in physical education scale (SE-PETE-D), were used to inform experts to create technological indicators for the EUSAPA. Teachers used 3 to 4 technologies (email, phone, SMS, Whatsapp) to communicate with students and colleagues, and many reported low levels of technological content knowledge. Experts considered the need to add 13 new functions to the EUSAPA. Most of the functions were considered to be feasible to implement in existing practices and the other requiring extra resources or skills. As further training is planned, consideration of expertise is warranted when mapped against meeting standards.

Abstract

Physical literacy refers to the confidence, competence, motivation, knowledge, and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities throughout the lifespan. Little is known regarding the physical literacy of children/adolescents with visual impairments (VIs). Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine predictors of autonomous motivation in children/adolescents with VI (N = 41) from Latvia and the United States. A secondary aim was to explore differential effects of the country regarding all variables of interest. Methods: Within this preliminary investigation, levels of perceived motor competence, competence satisfaction, and autonomous motivation were captured in children/adolescents with VI located in Latvia and the United States. Results: Competence satisfaction and perceived motor competence significantly predicted autonomous motivation regardless of location. Significant differences regarding country occurred for competence satisfaction and autonomous motivation. Discussion/Conclusion: Implications for cultivating physical literacy for children/adolescents with VI involve strategies for physical educators focusing on fostering motivation.

The global spread of invasive plants is an important environmental problem and a real threat to biological diversity, with significant impacts on agriculture, forestry, and human and animal health. Invasive plant eradication produces large amounts of plant biomass, which should be safely utilized. The study reviews possibilities for using biomass of invasive plant species in the bioeconomy to safely convert them to items of value. Invasive plant biomass can be used as fuel or for energy production applying either biochemical or thermochemical processing technologies. The biomass of invasive plants also can be used for energy production or isolation of biologically active components. Invasive plants contain many groups of substances providing their defense potential against predators; these substances participate in metabolic regulation processes and others. Amongst the substances of interest for bioeconomy are lipids, polyphenols, alkaloids, carbohydrates, plant fibers, and essential oils. In the development of invasive plant biomass utilization strategies, the bio-based value pyramid and the waste hierarchy should be considered. 27. 'Incluye-T': A Professional Development Program to Increase the Self-Efficacy of Physical Educators towards Inclusion

Abstract

Physical Education teachers (PET) self-efficacy (SE) is a cornerstone for a successful inclusion of students with special educational needs. This study aims to evaluate the effect of a training program called "Incluye-T" on the SE of Spanish in-service PETs (n = 229) toward the inclusion of students with special education needs in physical education, compared with a control group (n = 40). The study also evaluates how the training program is mediated by two demographic variables: teachers' gender and teaching setting. The Self-Efficacy Scale for Physical Education Teacher Education Majors towards Children with Disabilities was used to measure SE pre and post-intervention. Significant improvements in SE were demonstrated for in-service PET compared to the control group for all the sub-scales of the SE scale: intellectual, physical, and visual impairments (p < 0.01, large effect sizes). All teachers' self-efficacy subscales improved regardless of their teaching settings (e.g. primary or secondary schools) and gender. Implications for future professional development provision are discussed, including the delivered training strategies, materials or the duration of the intervention.

28. Including Students with Severe, Multiple Disabilities in General Physical Education

Abstract

Many children with severe disabilities never have the opportunity to try general physical education (GPE) because their Individualized Education Program (IEP) team feels that they will not be successful, will not benefit, or will not be safe. However, there are ways to safely, successfully, and meaningfully include children with severe disabilities in GPE. A model can be designed to make sure the child will be able to work on his or her physical education goals and objectives while interacting with peers without disabilities in a way that will not disrupt the general program. The purpose of this article is to detail specific strategies that allow a student with severe, multiple disabilities (SMD) to be included in GPE. These strategies revolve around three major themes: (1) identifying and selecting appropriate goals and objectives for the student with disabilities and then finding ways to help the student achieve these goals and objectives while in GPE; (2) making the GPE setting safe for the student with SMD; and (3) facilitating social interaction between students with and without SMD. Specific examples of simple modifications that allow the student with SMD to be safely and meaningfully involved in GPE will be presented throughout.

Abstract

How the multiple facets of soil fungal diversity vary worldwide remains virtually unknown, hindering the management of this essential species-rich group. By sequencing high-resolution DNA markers in over 4000 topsoil samples from natural and human-altered ecosystems across all continents, we illustrate the distributions and drivers of different levels of taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of fungi and their ecological groups. We show the impact of precipitation and temperature interactions on local fungal species richness (alpha diversity) across different climates. Our findings reveal how temperature drives fungal compositional turnover (beta diversity) and phylogenetic diversity, linking them with regional species richness (gamma diversity). We integrate fungi into the principles of global biodiversity distribution and present detailed maps for biodiversity conservation and modeling of global ecological processes.

Abstract

Aim. The paper focuses on aspects regarding performance swimming in Romania over the past decade, taking into account several variables such as the number of athletes, infrastructure, competition system, issues faced by athletes and coaches, as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods. We analyzed data provided by the Romanian Swimming and Modern Pentathlon Federation (F.R.N.P.M.) and conducted surveys to better understand the current situation and challenges facing the swimming community in Romania. Results. We developed two questionnaires, one addressed to athletes consisting of 23 items and one addressed to coaches, with 17 items. A total of 75 competitive swimmers, with an average age of 15.75 years, and 31 coaches responded to the questionnaires. The results confirmed the hypothesis that in Romania, as well, the adolescent period represents the stage where the dropout rate from competitive swimming is the highest and that the COVID-19 pandemic had negative consequences on athletes' preparation and increased the number of swimmers who withdrew from competitive sports activities. Conclusions. It is essential to identify the factors that lead athletes to drop out or prematurely cease their sports activity, especially in the case of performance swimming, before they reached their peak performance. Abstract

Semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, reduces the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in people with overweight or obesity, but the effects of this drug on outcomes in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and heart failure are unknown. We report a prespecified analysis of the effect of once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide 2·4 mg on ischaemic and heart failure cardiovascular outcomes. We aimed to investigate if semaglutide was beneficial in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with a history of heart failure compared with placebo; if there was a difference in outcome in patients designated as having heart failure with preserved ejection fraction compared with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction; and if the efficacy and safety of semaglutide in patients with heart failure was related to baseline characteristics or subtype of heart failure.

Abstract

Partner specificity is a well‐documented phenomenon in biotic interactions, yet the factors that determine specificity in plant‐fungal associations remain largely unknown. By utilizing composite soil samples, we identified the predictors that drive partner specificity in both plants and fungi, with a particular focus on ectomycorrhizal associations. Fungal guilds exhibited significant differences in overall partner preference and avoidance, richness, and specificity to specific tree genera. The highest level of specificity was observed in root endophytic and ectomycorrhizal associations, while the lowest was found in arbuscular mycorrhizal associations. The majority of ectomycorrhizal fungal species showed a preference for one of their partner trees, primarily at the plant genus level. Specialist ectomycorrhizal fungi were dominant in belowground communities in terms of species richness and relative abundance. Moreover, all tree genera (and occasionally species) demonstrated a preference for certain fungal groups. Partner specificity was not related to the rarity of fungi or plants or environmental conditions, except for soil pH. Depending on the partner tree genus, specific fungi became more prevalent and relatively more abundant with increasing stand age, tree dominance, and soil pH conditions optimal for the partner tree genus. The richness of partner tree species and increased evenness of ectomycorrhizal fungi in multi‐host communities enhanced the species richness of ectomycorrhizal fungi. However, it was primarily the partner‐generalist fungi that contributed to the high diversity of ectomycorrhizal fungi in mixed forests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background. Sedentary and unhealthy lifestyle behaviors are modifiable health risks that often develop during adolescence. A comprehensive analysis of unhealthy behaviors in adolescents with and without chronic health conditions (CHC) could inform the development of more effective prevention approaches. The aim. This study aimed to measure associations between Problematic Internet Use (PIU), lifestyle habits and subjective health complaints among adolescents with and without CHC. In addition, health behaviors and prevalence of subjective health complaints between adolescents with and without CHC were compared. Methods. A total of 171 adolescents (87 without CHC and 84 with CHC) completed an online survey. The PIU was assessed by the Problematic and Risky Internet Use Screening Scale. The subjective health complaints assessed were somatic and psychological symptoms. Healthy lifestyle behaviors assessed were daily physical activities, time spent by screens, eating habits, and duration of sleep. Results. The results showed that 21.83% of adolescents with CHC and 36.78% without CHC scored at risk for problematic internet use. Adolescents without CHC reported significantly more frequent psychological health complaints than their peers with CHC. This study found that multiple health complaints and unhealthy eating habits were significantly associated with PIU in adolescents with CHC, while nervousness and eating fast food in adolescents without CHC. Girls without CHC reported significantly higher PRIUSS scores and prevalence of subjective health complaints than boys (p, Įvadas. Iš viso 171 paauglys (87 nesergantys lėtinėmis ligomis ir 84 sergantys) užpildė internetinę apklausą. PIN buvo įvertintas probleminio ir rizikingo interneto naudojimo atrankos skale. Vertinti subjektyvūs sveikatos skundai buvo somatiniai ir psichologiniai simptomai. Įvertintas sveikos gyvensenos elgesys buvo kasdienė fizinė veikla, laikas, praleistas prie ekranų, mitybos įpročiai ir miego trukmė. Rezultatai . Rezultatai parodė, kad 21,83 proc. paauglių, sergančių lėtinėmis ligomis, ir 36,78 proc. nesergančių, kyla problemų dėl interneto naudojimo. Paaugliai, nesergantys lėtinėmis ligomis, daug dažniau skundžiasi psichologine sveikata nei jų bendraamžiai, sergantys lėtinėmis ligomis. Šiame tyrime nustatyta, kad dauginiai sveikatos skundai ir nesveikos mitybos įpročiai buvo reikšmingai susiję su PIN paaugliams, sergantiems lėtinėmis ligomis, o paaugliams, kurie ne - sirgo, nustatytas nervingumas ir greito maisto valgymas. Merginos, nesergančios lėtinėmis ligomis, nurodė reikšmingai aukštesnius PRIUSS balus ir subjektyvių sveikatos nusiskundimų dažnumą, lyginant su berniukais (p < 0,05). Išvados . Paaugliai, nesergantys lėtinėmis ligomis, rodė žymiai didesnį vidutinio ir intensyvaus fizinio aktyvumo lygį per savaitę nei jų bendraamžiai, kurie sirgo lėtinėmis ligomis. PIN elgesys labiausiai susijęs su psichologiniais sveikatos nusiskundimais ir nesveika mityba, tiek paaugliams, sergantiems lėtinėmis ligomis, tiek ir nesergantiems. Šios išvados pabrėžia poreikį nustatyti konkrečias problemines interneto naudojimo veiklas, susijusias su skirtingais pavojais paauglių sveikatai.

Abstract

Fungi are highly diverse organisms, which provide multiple ecosystem services. However, compared with charismatic animals and plants, the distribution patterns and conservation needs of fungi have been little explored. Here, we examined endemicity patterns, global change vulnerability and conservation priority areas for functional groups of soil fungi based on six global surveys using a high-resolution, long-read metabarcoding approach. We found that the endemicity of all fungi and most functional groups peaks in tropical habitats, including Amazonia, Yucatan, West-Central Africa, Sri Lanka, and New Caledonia, with a negligible island effect compared with plants and animals. We also found that fungi are predominantly vulnerable to drought, heat and land-cover change, particularly in dry tropical regions with high human population density. Fungal conservation areas of highest priority include herbaceous wetlands, tropical forests, and woodlands. We stress that more attention should be focused on the conservation of fungi, especially root symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal fungi in tropical regions as well as unicellular early-diverging groups and macrofungi in general. Given the low overlap between the endemicity of fungi and macroorganisms, but high conservation needs in both groups, detailed analyses on distribution and conservation requirements are warranted for other microorganisms and soil organisms.

Abstract

Purpose: to analyze the first experience of administering Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) for the students (studs) enrolled in the master's degree program majoring in physical therapy at National University of Ukraine on Physical Education and Sport. Material and methods. The survey included 21 examiners (examrs) and 46 studs involved in OSCE administering. The questionnaire consisted of the questions assessing the quality of station equipment, clarity of the exam format, other aspects. Results. All the examrs informed of total clarity of the examination format, but only 13 (61.9%) of them noted a similar level of clarity for the studs. Тhe examrs identified 3 main reasons for unsuccessful attempts to perform a skill/task: insufficient training, new format of checking knowledge/examination, slightly different focus of training. The distribution of answers concerning the clarity of the format of the examination and its tasks provided by the studs did not differ statistically from those provided by the teachers. The vast maj ority of the examrs indicated that the skills were of sufficient difficulty for the purpose of the examination. 5 examrs had significant difficulties assessing skill performance according to the provided form, while 7 of them had slight difficulties and the rest had no difficulties. The majority of the studs noted that the number of stations and equipment was sufficient (no statistical differences were determined between the answers of the studs and the examrs). Conclusions. The survey revealed the need for introducing certain changes in OSCE assessment form, in the educational program, conducting special preparatory classes for studs. The obtained results can be used to improve the development of OSCE in physical therapy in Ukraine., Мета: провести аналіз першого досвіду проведення об’єктивного структурованого клінічного іспиту (ОСКІ) у випускників магістерської програми з фізичної терапії у Національному університеті фізичного виховання і спорту України . Матеріал та методи. У опитуванні прийняли участь 21 екзаменатор та 46 студентів. Анкета складалась з запитань, котрі оцінювали якість оснащення станцій, зрозумілість формату екзамену, а також інші аспекти. Результати. Усі викладачі повідомили про повну зрозумілість формату екзамену, але лише 13 (61,9%) з ни х відзначили аналогічний рівень зрозумілості для студентів. Екзаменатори виділили три основні причини невдалих спроб виконати навичку/завдання: недостатня підготовка, новий формат перевірки знань/екзамену, дещо інша спрямованість підготовки при навчанні. Р озподіл відповідей щодо зрозумілості формату екзамену та завдань студентами статистично не відрізнялася у опитуванні студентів та викладачів. Переважна більшість викладачів вказала, що навички були достатньої важкості для мети екзамену. П’ять викладачів ма ли значні складності з оцінюванням виконання навички за наданим бланком, сім – у незначній мірі, інші не мали складнощів. Більшість студентів відзначила, що кількість станцій і обладнання були достатніми (статистичних відмінностей між відповідями студентів та викладачів не встановлено). Висновки. Проведене опитування виявило необхідність певних змін бланку оцінювання, освітньої програми, проведення спеціальних підготовчих занять для студентів. Результаты. Все преподаватели соо бщили о полном понимании формата экзамена, но только 13 (61,9%) из них отметили аналогичный уровень понимания для студентов. Экзаменаторы выделили три основные причины неудачных попыток продемонстрировать навыки: недостаточная подготовка, новый формат пров ерки знаний/экзамена, несколько иная направленность подготовки при обучении. Распределение ответов по пониманию формата экзамена и задач студентами статистически не отличалось в опросе студентов и преподавателей. Подавляющее большинство преподавателей указ али, что навыки были достаточно сложными для целей экзамена. Пять преподавателей имели значительные сложности с оценкой выполнения навыка по предоставленному бланку, семь – в незначительной степени, другие со сложностями не столкнулись. Большинство студент ов отметило, что количество станций и оборудования было достаточными (статистические отличия между ответами студентов и преподавателей не установлены). Выводы. Проведенный опрос указал на необходимость определенных изменений бланка оценивания, образователь ной программы, проведения специальных подготовительных занятий для студентов. Полученные результаты могут использоваться для улучшения разработки ОСКИ в области физической терапии в Украине.

Abstract

How the multiple facets of soil fungal diversity vary worldwide remains virtually unknown, hindering the management of this essential species-rich group. By sequencing high-resolution DNA markers in over 4000 topsoil samples from natural and human-altered ecosystems across all continents, we illustrate the distributions and drivers of different levels of taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of fungi and their ecological groups. We show the impact of precipitation and temperature interactions on local fungal species richness (alpha diversity) across different climates. Our findings reveal how temperature drives fungal compositional turnover (beta diversity) and phylogenetic diversity, linking them with regional species richness (gamma diversity). We integrate fungi into the principles of global biodiversity distribution and present detailed maps for biodiversity conservation and modeling of global ecological processes.

Abstract

How the multiple facets of soil fungal diversity vary worldwide remains virtually unknown, hindering the management of this essential species-rich group. By sequencing high-resolution DNA markers in over 4000 topsoil samples from natural and human-altered ecosystems across all continents, we illustrate the distributions and drivers of different levels of taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of fungi and their ecological groups. We show the impact of precipitation and temperature interactions on local fungal species richness (alpha diversity) across different climates. Our findings reveal how temperature drives fungal compositional turnover (beta diversity) and phylogenetic diversity, linking them with regional species richness (gamma diversity). We integrate fungi into the principles of global biodiversity distribution and present detailed maps for biodiversity conservation and modeling of global ecological processes.
