Knowledge of migration behaviour and spatio-temporal habitat use is important for management and conservation, not least for diadromous species where population dynamics are affected by processes occurring in both freshwater and marine habitats. Sampling from a commercial capture fishery for the ecologically and economically important salmonid Salmo trutta L. we genotyped 189 single nucleotide polymorphisms and carried out genetic assignment of origin for 916 migratory sea trout sampled along ∼500 km of Britain’s North Sea coast. Population contributions to stocks showed strong geographical differences. Trout from rivers in the northern part of this coast (Tweed, Aln, Coquet, and Tyne) contributed the majority of migrants, irrespective of location, but fish from local rivers contributed to catches in most locations. Almost all (99%) trout assigned to native British populations and a large proportion (34%) of the sampled catches originated in rivers more than 100 km from capture sites, suggesting long-distance migration to be a common trait, confirming and enlarging historical trends from tagging data. Repeated sampling across years indicated short-term stability in migration patterns. Findings illustrate the scope for genetic stock identification to identify marine habitat use and monitor population-specific migration behaviours in species where stock assessment has not traditionally incorporated marine phase dynamics.

As a toxic and harmful global pollutant, mercury (Hg) enters the marine environment through natural sources, and human activities. It bioaccumulates through the food chain and therefore, Hg is of great importance for environmental monitoring. This study aims to answer the question if Hg contamination in fish and sediment from the German Bight follows temporal trends. Therefore, 496 individual female dab (Limanda limanda) were analyzed. The Hg concentrations in the muscle of dab from the German Bight showed significant increase in function of time with an annual percental change of 1.4%, leading to a 41% increase in Hg contamination level within 25 years of monitoring. At the same time, Hg concentrations in sediment—analyzed in 86 samples—significantly decreased in the nearby North Sea environment. This surprising contradiction is shown in the present study and possible causes are discussed. It could be clearly shown that contamination in sediment and biota can follow completely different time courses and therefore, different environmental matrices should be considered in future monitoring studies. Age of the fish turned out to be a biological factor of particular importance for temporal trend analysis.

Vertical distribution patterns and relative abundance of mesopelagic fish species and other major taxonomic groups were investigated through vertically stratified trawl sampling and hydroacoustic analyses along the subtropical convergence zone from 52° W to 70° W in the oligotrophic Sargasso Sea. Persistent stationary layers and several migrating components of different scattering characteristics were detected. The results reveal varying vertical migration patterns, including different times of onset of diel vertical migration in different depths and a migrant pathway emerging daily from the lower deep scattering layer (DSL) at dusk and migrating through the upper DSL without affecting its composition. Fish species identification was made based on morphological characteristics and confirmed by genetic barcoding analyses of subsamples. In total, 5022 fish specimens from 27 families, 62 genera and 70 species were caught. In terms of relative abundance (A) and biomass (M), catches were dominated by species of the families Myctophidae (A=59.1%, M=47.4% of total fish catch) and Melamphaidae (A=22.5%, M=17.1%). Myctophidae and Stomiidae were the most species-rich families with 31 and 12 species, respectively. Catches at the two easternmost stations were dominated byScopelogadus mizolepisandNannobrachium cuprarium,whileBolinichthys photothoraxandCeratoscopelus warmingiiwere the most abundant species in catches from the two westernmost stations. This study provides insights into distribution and vertical migration behaviour of mesopelagic fish in the Sargasso Sea and adds to our understanding of the mesopelagic community in this large oceanic area.

Vertebrates use cone cells in the retina for color vision and rod cells to see in dim light. Many deep-sea fishes have adapted to their environment to have only rod cells in the retina, while both rod and cone genes are still preserved in their genomes. As deep-sea fish larvae start their lives in the shallow, and only later submerge to the depth, they have to cope with diverse environmental conditions during ontogeny. Using a comparative transcriptomic approach in 20 deep-sea fish species from eight teleost orders, we report on a developmental cone-to-rod switch. While adults mostly rely on rod opsin (RH1) for vision in dim light, larvae almost exclusively express middle-wavelength-sensitive (“green”) cone opsins (RH2) in their retinas. The phototransduction cascade genes follow a similar ontogenetic pattern of cone—followed by rod-specific gene expression in most species, except for the pearleye and sabretooth (Aulopiformes), in which the cone cascade remains dominant throughout development, casting doubts on the photoreceptor cell identity. By inspecting the whole genomes of five deep-sea species (four of them sequenced within this study: Idiacanthus fasciola, Chauliodus sloani; Stomiiformes; Coccorella atlantica, and Scopelarchus michaelsarsi; Aulopiformes), we found that they possess one or two copies of the rod RH1 opsin gene, and up to seven copies of the cone RH2 opsin genes in their genomes, while other cone opsin classes have been mostly lost. Our findings hence provide molecular evidence for a limited opsin gene repertoire in deep-sea fishes and a conserved vertebrate pattern whereby cone photoreceptors develop first and rod photoreceptors are added only at later developmental stages.

Significance Body reorganization in eels during gametogenesis can induce undesired side effects with possible pathological significance. This study provides analytical evidence for the maternal transfer of toxic metals from soft and hard tissues to the ovaries of mature females. By illustrating the metabolic fluxes and fate of mobilized minerals and metals in the fishes’ bodies during sexual development, we have identified a previously unreported aspect of anthropogenic impact on endangered anguillid eels. Furthermore, our findings suggest a physiologically connected interplay of energy metabolism and bone resorption in the reproductive strategy of eels. Consequently, we propose the eel as an interesting model organism for investigating the physiological pathways connecting lipid metabolism and mineral retention, known also to affect the health state of humans., During their once-in-a-lifetime transoceanic spawning migration, anguillid eels do not feed, instead rely on energy stores to fuel the demands of locomotion and reproduction while they reorganize their bodies by depleting body reserves and building up gonadal tissue. Here we show how the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) breaks down its skeleton to redistribute phosphorus and calcium from hard to soft tissues during its sexual development. Using multiple analytical and imaging techniques, we characterize the spatial and temporal degradation of the skeletal framework from initial to final gonadal maturation and use elemental mass ratios in bone, muscle, liver, and gonadal tissue to determine the fluxes and fates of selected minerals and metals in the eels’ bodies. We find that bone loss is more pronounced in females than in males and eventually may reach a point at which the mechanical stability of the skeleton is challenged. P and Ca are released and translocated from skeletal tissues to muscle and gonads, leaving both elements in constant proportion in remaining bone structures. The depletion of internal stores from hard and soft tissues during maturation-induced body reorganization is accompanied by the recirculation, translocation, and maternal transfer of potentially toxic metals from bone and muscle to the ovaries in gravid females, which may have direct deleterious effects on health and hinder the reproductive success of individuals of this critically endangered species.

The head morphology and body shapes of anguilliform larvae (leptocephali) vary widely by having fewer, much longer teeth in the small larvae and more numerous, but relatively smaller teeth in larger developmental stages. The feeding ecology of leptocephali has been difficult to understand because they do not appear to feed on typical zooplankton like other fish larvae but are mostly found with amorphous organic material in the gut. Observations of the basic morphology of mainly the head and gut contents of anguillid larvae and several families of larger marine eel larvae were made using photographs taken during three recent sampling surveys for leptocephali in the Sargasso Sea spawning area of the European, Anguilla anguilla, and American, Anguilla rostrata, eels. The gut contents of leptocephali consisted of amorphous material that sometimes flowed out of the intestine, and like in the Indo-Pacific, appendicularian houses and fecal pellets and other visible objects were sometimes present. High-magnification microscope images showed the presence of many spherical objects, amorphous and other materials that were likely related to bacteria, protists, fungi, or other organisms. The presence of filter structures confirmed that large oval objects were appendicularian houses, and possible hydrozoan objects were seen in Eurypharynx pelecanoides and Avocettina infans gut contents. The gut contents of A. anguilla, E. pelecanoides, and Kaupichthys hyoproroides leptocephali appeared to contain round ≤40 μm heterotrophic thraustochytrid protists (class Labyrinthulomycetes) that likely colonized marine snow materials consumed by the larvae. These observations support the hypothesis that leptocephali, whose teeth structure and relative teeth sizes change with growth, primarily target overlapping size ranges of marine snow particles as a food source in the Sargasso Sea, and the particles contain a wide range of components that aggregate from the food-web.

The understanding of swimming physiology and knowledge on the metabolic costs of swimming are important for assessing effects of environmental factors on migratory behavior. Swim tunnels are the most common experimental setups for measuring swimming performance and oxygen uptake rates in fishes; however, few can realistically simulate depth and the changes in hydrostatic pressure that many fishes experience, e.g. during diel vertical migrations. Here, we present a new hyperbaric swimming respirometer (HSR) that can simulate depths of up to 80 m. The system consists of three separate, identical swimming tunnels, each with a volume of 205 L, a control board and a storage tank with water treatment. The swimming chamber of each tunnel has a length of 1.40 m and a diameter of 20 cm. The HSR uses the principle of intermittent-flow respirometry and has here been tested with female European eels (Anguilla anguilla). Various pressure, temperature and flow velocity profiles can be programmed, and the effect on metabolic activity and oxygen consumption can be assessed. Thus, the HSR provides opportunities to study the physiology of fish during swimming in a simulated depth range that corresponds to many inland, coastal and shelf waters.

The abundance and distribution of leptocephalus larvae of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla, Anguillidae) were examined using ten historic and recent Sargasso Sea expeditions that were selected on the basis of having the largest number of sampling stations and highest catches. The surveys cover the period 1920–2014. Station data were recalculated to the same unit of larval density per unit area, and the irregular station positions were transformed to a regular spatial grid to allow calculation of comparable measures of abundance of the youngest (0+) leptocephalus cohort. The result is that the mean and maximum densities of 0+ leptocephali after 2007 on average have decreased by 70%–80% from the densities during the period before the drastic decrease in glass eel recruitment, which started in the 1980s. This is of the same magnitude as the change in spawning stock, if the total continental commercial landings are used as a proxy. In the same period, the glass eel recruitment in Europe has decreased by more than 95%. The conclusion is that a major cause for the recruitment decrease may be an increased leptocephalus mortality during the oceanic phase or a large geographic shift in glass eel arrival. Combining the survey data, the spatial distribution of 0+ leptocephali was concentrated south of the northernmost front in the Subtropical Convergence Zone, but high densities were also found far south of the front in the western part of the distribution area and leptocephali were present also north of the average frontal position.

The distribution of the leptocephalus larvae of European (Anguilla anguilla) and American (Anguilla rostrata) eels collected during recent Sargasso Sea surveys was used to model larval drift. The drift trajectories of individual larva were back-calculated to the estimated time of spawning, using current data from two global oceanographic assimilation models. The results of both models give the same overall result; widespread spawning extended in time from December to March. The drift was also calculated forwards for approximately 1 year. The forward drift modelling showed that most leptocephali remained in the area south of the Subtropical Frontal Zone. One conclusion is that the majority of leptocephali remain trapped and possibly die in the retention area. A small proportion of leptocephali are entrained into the Gulf Stream system. An implication is that the spawning success may be highly sensitive to oceanographic and climatic factors that alter the dispersion of leptocephali out from the retention area. An alternative interpretation is that the surveys were made too late after the peak spawning period and that the core spawning area was missed.

The life history of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla, L.) is characterized by a series of metamorphoses and transitions that provoke drastic morphological changes. Most of these changes go along with the catadromous life cycle in eels, involving extensive physiologically adaptations. In this study it was investigated whether these drastic changes have an epigenetic basis by analyzing global methylation patterns in liver, gill and brain tissue from glass eels caught at the British coast as well as yellow and silver eels from River Rhine using methylation-sensitive amplified polymorphisms (MSAP). Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) on MSAP data derived from liver tissue revealed only minor differences in methylation patterns between glass, yellow and silver eels, reflecting uniform functioning of the liver throughout the investigated lifespan. In brain and gill tissue, however, marked differences in methylation patterns were found. Principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) revealed yellow eels being partially clustered with silver eels and a more distinct cluster of glass eels based on the methylation patterns in the brain. According to results found in the gills, glass eels were more similar to silver eels whereas yellow eels were found to be clustered separately. From these results it can be concluded that epigenetic changes in gill tissue most likely reflect and are linked with adaptation towards salt- and freshwater conditions. The observed differences in brain methylation patterns, however, might be linked to morphological and physiological changes during metamorphosis and transitions within the life history of European eels potentially affecting subsequent differential gene expression patterns required for such changes.

Gelatinous zooplankton (GZ) such as medusae, ctenophores, siphonophores, pyrosomes and salps are important components of oceanic pelagic communities and small calycophoran siphonophores (CS) are typically abundant at shallow depths. The Sargasso Sea spawning area of the Atlantic catadromous freshwater eels has a regular pattern of shallow autumn to spring temperature fronts. There is limited information about the southern Sargasso Sea GZ fauna, and it is not known which species are distributed across these frontal zones. Plankton samples from a survey of larval European eel (Anguilla anguilla) abundance in March and April 2017 using an Isaacs-Kidd Midwater Trawl (0–300 m, 35 stations, three transects) were used to examine the distribution and abundance of net-captured CS and other GZ species in relation to oceanographic characteristics. More than 2200 specimens of 15 taxa were sub-sampled, with five CS (Abylopsis tetragona, A. eschscholtzii, Chelophyes appendiculata, Eudoxoides spiralis and E. mitra) dominating catches at every station. GZ were most abundant around the 22 and 24 °C isotherms, and higher abundances of CS in the north were correlated with lower water temperature. The widespread presence of CS across the European eel spawning area is consistent with a recent study detecting their DNA sequences in the gut contents of young eel larvae collected in the Sargasso Sea, suggesting CS material was either eaten directly or as part of ingested marine snow particles. The present study shows that both types of organisms occupy the southern Sargasso Sea during the European eel spawning season.

Leptocephali of the shallow-water congrid eel Ariosoma balearicum are abundant during February–April in the Sargasso Sea, and larval and adult meristic data indicates this species includes several regional subpopulations/cryptic species. Four multiple-transect larval surveys (2011, 2014, 2015, 2017) were used to examine the geographic size distribution of two myomere-count types of A. balearicum leptocephali. High-count (HC) larvae were consistently mostly between 80 and 100 mm in size (60–132 mm; 87.9 ± 6.8 mm) as observed previously, and frequently had narrow size ranges. The usually larger LC larvae (78–176 mm; 111.4 ± 26.7 mm) were more abundant in western or central areas. HC larvae tended to decrease in size from west to east and increase from south to north. Catch rates were geographically variable relative to hydrographic structure/frontal positions across the wide 2015 sampling area. Mitochondrial 16 s rRNA sequences of HC and LC larvae show species-level differences, providing evidence of the existence of two cryptic species with different larval dispersal strategies in the Sargasso Sea subtropical gyre region. The HC larvae disperse widely into the gyre, seemingly through Gulf Stream recirculation or eastward frontal-jet flows, and apparently must use directional swimming to cross the Florida Current to recruit into the South Atlantic Bight. LC leptocephali may mostly be retained near the Bahamas, with few larvae dispersing into the gyre. This seems to indicate natural selection occurred for spawning location and larval behavior due to the powerful Florida Current/Gulf Stream, resulting in two completely different spawning and larval dispersal strategies within a local geographic region.

It has been known for about a century that European eels have a unique life history that includes offshore spawning in the Sargasso Sea about 5000–7000 km away from their juvenile and adult habitats in Europe and northern Africa. Recently hatched eel larvae were historically collected during Danish, German and American surveys in specific areas in the southern Sargasso Sea. During a 31 day period of March and April 2014, Danish and German research ships sampled for European eel larvae along 15 alternating transects of stations across the Sargasso Sea. The collection of recently hatched eel larvae (≤12 mm) from 70° W and eastward to 50° W showed that the European eel had been spawning across a 2000 km wide region of the North Atlantic Ocean. Historical collections made from 1921 to 2007 showed that small larvae had also previously been collected in this wide longitudinal zone, showing that the spatial extent of spawning has not diminished in recent decades, irrespective of the dramatic decline in recruitment. The use of such a wide spawning area may be related to variations in the onset of the silver eel spawning migration, individual differences in their long-term swimming ability, or aspects of larval drift.

Several surveys and studies have examined the Atlantic anguillid eels’ larval distributions, but little is known about their larval growth rates. Otoliths of 17 European eel Anguilla anguilla (8.8–46.0 mm) and 19 American eel Anguilla rostrata (9.8–59.9 mm) leptocephali collected in the Sargasso Sea (25–31°N, 58–70°W) in March and April 2011 were analyzed and their spawning times and larval growth rates were estimated. Ages calculated from the number of otolith increments of European and American eel larvae showed ranges of 10–127 days and 14–233 days, respectively. Linear relationships between age and total length indicated early larval growth rates of 0.31 mm/day for the European eel and 0.35 mm/day for the American eel. This suggested slower growth rates in low temperatures in the Sargasso Sea compared to other anguillid species in the Indo-Pacific, where water temperatures are higher. The back-calculated hatching dates of small leptocephali (8.8–26.7 mm) were in February and March 2011. More American eels hatched in February and more European eels hatched in March. The hatching times of two larger European eel leptocephali (38.7 and 46.0 mm) and a larger American eel leptocephalus (59.9 mm) were back-calculated to November and December 2010 and July 2010, respectively, suggesting hatching times outside of the primary spawning seasons. These novel observations provide important information on the timing of spawning and larval growth characteristics of Atlantic eels, which would benefit from validation by additional otolith studies of leptocephali.

The European eel Anguilla anguilla has shown decreased recruitment in recent decades. Despite increasing efforts to establish species recovery measures, it is unclear if the decline was caused by reduced numbers of reproductive-stage silver eels reaching the spawning area, low early larval survival, or increased larval mortality during migration to recruitment areas. To determine if larval abundances in the spawning area significantly changed over the past three decades, a plankton trawl sampling survey for anguillid leptocephali was conducted in March and April 2011 in the spawning area of the European eel that was designed to directly compare to collections made in the same way in 1983 and 1985. The catch rates of most anguilliform leptocephali were lower in 2011, possibly because of the slightly smaller plankton trawl used, but the relative abundances of European eel and American eel, Anguilla rostrata, leptocephali were much lower in 2011 than in 1983 and 1985 when compared to catches of other common leptocephali. The leptocephali assemblage was the same in 2011 as in previous years, but small larvae of mesopelagic snipe eels, Nemichthys scolopaceus, which spawn sympatrically with anguillid eels, were less abundant. Temperature fronts in the spawning area were also poorly defined compared to previous years. Although the causes for low anguillid larval abundances in 2011 are unclear, the fact that there are presently fewer European and American eel larvae in the spawning area than during previous time periods indicates that decreased larval abundance and lower eventual recruitment begin within the spawning area.

The potential of canola protein isolate (CPI) as fish meal alternative in diets for rainbow trout was evaluated. Apparent digestibility coefficients (ADCs) for protein from a fish meal-based reference diet (89.2 +/- 1.1%) and CPI (84.6 +/- 1.8%) were determined by indirect marker method in a digestibility experiment. ADC of dietary dry matter was slightly lower for the reference diet (62.5 +/- 4.7%), but not significantly different to the CPI test diet (65.9 +/- 3.1%). In a subsequent growth trial, 20 fish (initial weight 31.5 +/- 0.5g) were stocked into each of 15 experimental tanks of a freshwater flow-through system. Fish were organized in triplicate groups and received experimental diets with 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of fish meal replaced with CPI on the basis of digestible protein (designated as Control, I25, I50, I75, I100 respectively). At the end of a 70-day feeding period, growth performance, feed intake and feed conversion ratio of treatment groups receiving diets I25, I50 or I100 were similar to the control group, while fish fed diet I75 showed significantly higher weight gain caused by improved feed conversion. The tested CPI was therefore identified to be a highly valuable fish meal alternative, not negatively affecting diet palatability, feed intake and feed efficiencies.

The potential of two rapeseed protein concentrates partitioned in albumin and globulin fractions as fish meal alternative was evaluated. In a digestibility experiment with juvenile rainbow trout apparent digestibility coefficients (ADCs) were determined by indirect marker method with feces collected by continuous sieving. ADCs of protein from fish meal (89.2 +/- 1.1%) and globulin concentrate (88.8 +/- 0.6%) were significantly higher than ADCs from albumin concentrate (77.7 +/- 1.4%). ADCs of dietary dry matter were similar between the control diet (62.5 +/- 4.7%) and the globulin concentrate diet (62.3 +/- 0.5%), but significantly lower in the albumin concentrate diet (56.2 +/- 1.5%). In a subsequent growth trial, each of 21 experimental tanks of a freshwater flow-through system was stocked with ten rainbow trout (initial average weight 31.5 +/- 0.5 g). Fish were organized in triplicate groups and received experimental diets with 0, 50, 75, or 100% of fish meal replaced with albumin (A50-100) or globulin (G50-100) concentrate on the basis of digestible protein. At the end of a 70 day feeding period feed conversion ratio in the albumin treatment groups was not significantly affected at all substitution levels. But due to lowered feed intake at higher inclusion levels growth performance decreased at A 75 and A 100. Dietary globulin inclusion influenced growth performance by reduced feed intake and utilization in all groups negatively due to higher levels of glucosinolates and sinapinic acid. Significant lower fish survival rates were observed when fish received diets A75, A100, G50, G75, or G100 compared to the control diet or diet A50. For the whole body composition, the crude protein content was significantly lower in fish fed diet G75 or G100 compared to the control diet, while fish fed on diet A50, A75, or A100 were lower in body fat content than fish fed on the control diet. Thus, we demonstrated that the used albumin concentrate can effectively replace 50% of dietary fish meal in rainbow trout diets, whereas the application of the globulin concentrate negatively influenced diet palatability, thereby reducing diet intake and subsequently fish growth. – The size structure of a predator population can cause differences in the relative survival of different prey length classes whereby the biggest prey may reach a safe size because of the size-dependent character of predation. In the present study, the diet of European catfish was investigated to examine if catfish feeding can prevent cyprinids from reaching such a size refuge. In the lake studied, catfish was stocked for biomanipulation purposes to reduce unwanted roach and bream populations. Crayfish and roach were the most important prey items of catfish. If only species composition in the diet was considered, no clear changes were recorded in relation to catfish size. However, the length of roach as prey significantly increased with catfish length. Catfish were significantly larger than the other piscivorous fish in the lake, but took relatively smaller roach in comparison with similar-sized pike or pikeperch. Nevertheless, because of the high mean length of catfish, roach cannot reach a size refuge. For unknown reasons, the expected and intended predation on bream was not observed. Catfish took smaller prey than could be expected from mouth gape data. By extending the relationship between catfish as predator and roach as prey beyond the predator length range currently found in the lake, it could be shown that even catfish of 150 cm length will probably feed upon only 65% of all available bream length classes. Therefore, stocking with catfish cannot prevent a size refuge for the bream.

This study aims to implement a method for characterizing historical fish species composition. Historical data on fish communities and human alterations of rivers have been extracted from a broad range of historical sources as well as archaeological studies. Two large lowland river systems in Germany, Elbe and Oder, serve as an example to summarize and evaluate available historical information, to characterize historical changes of fish communities, and to derive semi-quantitative fish-faunistic references. It is recommended to date the historical baseline for fish-faunistic references back to the year 1850, before the large river regulations of the 19 th century had a negative effect on fish, and before numerous neozoans spread out. The reference fish communities exemplified for the bream region of the rivers Elbe and Oder comprise 42 fish species, each with a rough but calibrated description of relative species abundance integrating 300 years of fish records. According to our fish-faunistic reference, slow-flowing metapotamal river stretches are characterized by a) about 36-37 % of rheophilic fish, b) about 10-12 % of lithophilic and 9-10 % psammophilic spawners, c) a high species diversity (H' = 2.90-2.93), and d) a relatively even dominance structure. A consistent methodological approach to develop fish-faunistic references for various river types is a prerequisite for fish-based assessment of ecological integrity of river systems and, thus, for the implementation of the new EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) (2000/60/EG).

The Feldberger Haussee, a highly eutrophic stratified hard-water lake located in the eastern part of Germany's Baltic lake district, was selected for a restoration programme combining external nutrient loading reduction and long-term biomanipulation. In 1980 the external phosphorus loading (1.8 g TP m−2 a−1) decreased by 90%, but water quality did not improve significantly within the following 6 years. In 1985 biomanipulation was initiated, with manual removal of cyprinid fish coupled with piscivore introductions as the principal measures. The expected changes in the pelagic community and improvements of water quality occurred after a delay of several years. Despite intensive manual removal of cyprinids and stocking of piscivores, standing stocks of cyprinid fish remained relatively high (130–260 kg ww ha−1) after some years of decline. Compared to the pre-biomanipulation period, mean seasonal (May-September) Daphnia spp. biomass roughly doubled (0.037 g C m−3 vs. 0.084 g C m−3). However, the predominance of small (

Pikeperch is an efficient predator in the pelagic zone of eutrophic and hypertrophic lakes and has, therefore, been used in several biomanipulation projects. Pikeperch stocking has also been part of the manipulation strategy in Feldberger Haussee, Germany. From 1996 to 1999, population development, growth and diet composition of pikeperch in Feldberger Haussee were studied. From 1996 to 1998, the population was dominated by two cohorts. Only in years with warm summers, recruitment from 0+ fish to older age-classes was successful. It appears likely that due to the relatively high depth of the lake the spawning period is delayed as a result of a slower temperature increase in spring. Therefore, 0+ pikeperch cannot benefit from the spring maximum of the zooplankton. This may be the reason for the slow growth and consequently, hampers the switch to piscivory for the majority of 0+ pikeperch. However, after becoming piscivorous, the pikeperch showed a reasonably good growth. Predation was mainly directed towards roach and 0+ perch, the major planktivores. The results of the present study confirm the role of pikeperch as an efficient predator of zooplanktivorous fish in open-water dominated lakes. Yet, it is suggested that the probability of successful recruitment of pikeperch in deeper, stratified lakes is reduced. Therefore, stable self-sustaining pikeperch populations cannot be expected in such lakes and regular stocking measures may be necessary even if a potential spawning stock exists.

A long-term biomanipulation has been performed in the stratified Feldberger Haussee since 1985. Prior to manipulation, nutrient load to the lake had declined due to waste water removal. Planktivorous fish were reduced by seining and by enhancement of piscivorous fish. Changes in transparency, nutrients, phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish were documented for both the premanipulation period (1978-1985) and the manipulation period (1986-1998). Transparency increased in response to the manipulation (+54%), but strong year-to-year fluctuations were observed. These fluctuations were correlated to chlorophyll a, primary production and the proportion of piscivores in the fish community. We conclude that the success of the restoration was predominantly attributed to bottom-up forces as a result of the declining nutrient load and an intensified co-precipitation of phosphorus with calcite. However, the increased predation impact by the piscivorous fish may have caused a reduced nutrient recycling by the planktivorous fish thus contributing also to the improvement in water quality.

Management of the piscivorous fish stocks plays a major role in combining water quality management and sustainable fisheries management. From 1994 to 1996 and in 1998, young-of-the-year (YOY) pike Esox lucius were stocked in different numbers in the course of a biomanipulation project in Lake Feldberger Haussee. Since 1997, population development, growth and food composition of pike have been studied. The fish stocked in 1995 were dominant within the population. Pike showed rapid growth, indicating a high food consumption. The predation pressure was mainly directed towards roach Rutilus rutilus and small perch Perca fluviatilis , the main planktivores. Natural recruitment was, however, low and the pike catches have drastically declined since 1996. Low recruitment is a problem that may require new stocking measures. Removal of larger pike by fishing would improve the survival of newly stocked fish. The application of stocking, protection and fishing in lake management is discussed.

Leptocephali of several elopomorph families can reach sizes of 100–300 mm or larger, but it is questionable if these large eel or notacanth larvae are effectively sampled by small-mesh sampling gear in the open ocean because of net avoidance or insufficient fishing effort. A sampling survey in the Sargasso Sea using both an Isaacs-Kidd Midwater Trawl (IKMT) with fine mesh and a large pelagic trawl with large mesh sizes found that fewer species and individual large leptocephali >100 mm were collected by 25 IKMT tows compared to 4 trawl deployments. Net avoidance of the IKMT by the larger leptocephali appeared to occur at least during the day, and the large trawl did not catch any small leptocephali because of the large mesh size. A combination of net avoidance of the IKMT and greater sampling effort of the much larger mouth-opening trawl seems to have resulted in more large leptocephali being collected by the trawl. This indicates that IKMT surveys undersample large leptocephali species and that large trawls do not sample the whole assemblage of leptocephali. To fully understand the biodiversity and abundance of leptocephali in the world’s oceans, large fine-mesh sampling gear like the IKMT and very large trawls with smaller mesh will likely be needed. This may be important because leptocephali are probably more abundant in the open ocean than is realized, and their role in the ocean surface layer communities and carbon cycle is not understood.

The potential of rapeseed protein concentrate as an alternative to fishmeal in diets for common carp (initial average weight 26.7±0.8 g) was evaluated. Triplicate groups of fish were fed isonitrogenous (40.4±0.2% crude protein) and isocaloric (21.4±0.1 kJ/g) experimental diets with 0%, 33%, 66%, or 100% replacement of fishmeal by rapeseed protein concentrate. At the end of the 56-day feeding period, growth parameters and feed efficiencies did not significantly differ between fish fed the 0% and 33% diets. The 66% and 100% replacement diets led to reduced feed intake and feed efficiency, resulting in lower growth performance. It appears that the taste and amino acid profile of these diets were negatively affected by the high inclusion levels of rapeseed protein concentrate. In conclusion, rapeseed protein concentrate can effectively replace 33% of the fishmeal in diets for carp without using palatability enhancers or amino acid supplements.

Despite some recent progress, there are still large gaps of knowledge about migration routes and behaviour of European eels, Anguilla anguilla, during their long-distance oceanic migration. To achieve a better understanding of the migration behaviour, 28 large female silver eels were equipped with pop-up satellite transmitters and released at three different locations in the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean and in the Sargasso Sea. The study covers tracking periods between 7 and 92 days. The distance between release point and estimated pop-up position ranged from 40 to 1000km, the mean minimum migration speeds from 1.5 to 17.0km day–1. The eels consistently conducted distinct diel vertical movements (DVM) with daily amplitudes of more than 300m and maximum diving depths of more than 1000m. Eels released in the Sargasso Sea used greater depths and a broader temperature range than individuals released in the Atlantic Ocean closer to the European continent. At least two eels were clearly preyed upon. The transmitters ascended in a considerable range of directions from the release points. Hence, the results of the study did not allow clear conclusions about the detailed location of the spawning site and on the routes of the eels to the spawning grounds.

The decision to migrate or not is regarded as genetically controlled for many invertebrate and vertebrate taxa. Here, we show that the environment influences this decision. By reciprocally transplanting brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) between two sections in a river, we show that both migratory and non-migratory behaviour can be environmentally induced; migratory behaviour developed in a river section with high brown trout densities and low specific growth rates, whereas non-migratory behaviour developed in a section with low brown trout densities and high specific growth rates. In a laboratory experiment, we tested the effect of food availability on the development of migratory and non-migratory body morphologies and found that most brown trout became migrants when food levels were low but fewer did so at high food levels. Thus, the decision to migrate seems to be a plastic response, influenced by growth opportunities.

Die Gewassereutrophierung stellt in vielen Teilen der Welt ein noch immer gravierendes Problem dar. Wenn in einem Gewasser mehr Algen wachsen als wunschenswert ist, kann ihre Menge zum Beispiel durch eine Erhohung der Verluste des Phytoplanktons verringert werden. Der Beitrag erlautert zunachst die trophischen Zusammenhange, die zu einer Verringerung des Phytoplanktons fuhren konnen und beschreibt die Moglichkeiten der Biomanipulation uber den Fischbesatz. Anschliesend werden Anwendungsempfehlungen gegeben und am Beispiel des Feldberger Haussees erlautert. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Biomanipulation in Kombination mit Belastungsverminderungen den okologisch besten, gutewirtschaftlich nachhaltigsten und finanziell gunstigsten Weg einer Seerestaurierung darstellen kann. Biomanipulation, the reduction of planktivorous fish to enhance filter-feeding zooplankton, has been used to rehabilitate eutrophied lakes. However, efficacy and long-term success were dependent on nutrient load, lake morphometry and biomanipulation measures. The ongoing focus on sustainable use of aquatic resources offers the chance to perform lake rehabilitation using a combined strategy of nutrient load reduction and traditional inland fisheries management techniques. Particularly in Central and Western Europe where piscivorous fish are the target species of most commercial and recreational fisheries, an enhancement of the piscivores by stocking and harvest regulations may act successfully in the co-management of ecosystem and fisheries. Guidelines are presented on how biomanipulation can be used as in lake rehabilitation by considering the objectives and constraints of traditional fisheries management. Alternatives in the decision tree are elucidated by examples from biomanipulations and lake management programmes in the temperate zone of Europe and North America. It is suggested that biomanipulation may support many lake rehabilitation programmes where fisheries’ stakeholders are the principal user groups.
