Der Maschinenschlosser Hermann Enters wächst Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts in der Textilmetropole des Wuppertals auf. Er nimmt als Soldat am Deutsch-Französischen Krieg 1870/71 teil und ist bei Krupp in Essen Zeuge der Industrialisierung des Ruhrgebiets. Im'Fieber für Amerika'entscheiden sich Enters und seine Frau zur Auswanderung und finden in Milwaukee am Michigansee Möglichkeiten der Entfaltung, die ihre Familie in Deutschland vergeblich suchte. Enters schrieb seine Jugenderinnerungen im Abstand von ein paar Jahren zweimal nieder und ergänzte sie beim zweiten Mal um das weitere Leben. Wie schon die erste Version, wurden auch diese Erinnerungen von Klaus Goebel ediert und mit einem Kommentar versehen. Enters urteilt schonungslos über Eltern, Schule und Kirche, Arbeitsmethoden und Alkoholismus und gewährt spannende Einblicke in ein Arbeiterleben und -leiden in Zeiten der Industrialisierung.

Diese Briefe spiegeln eine deutsche Familie Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Ihr Mittelpunkt ist Sabine Diesterweg, Ehefrau des namhaften Pädagogen Adolph Diesterweg und Mutter von zehn Kindern. Eine vielbeschäftigte Hausfrau und Mutter von zehn Kindern steht im Mittelpunkt: Sabine Diesterweg. Briefe aus mehr als 20 Jahren bringen uns eine bürgerliche deutsche Familie in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts nahe. Selbstauskünfte einer Frau in der patriarchalisch dominierten Gesellschaft dieser Zeit sind nur selten publiziert. Die meisten Briefe richtet Sabine an die mit dem Arzt Heinrich Köhler verheiratete Tochter Julie in Offenbach. Auch andere Kinder wie der spätere Schulbuchverleger Moritz Diesterweg gehören zu den Adressaten oder kommen mit Briefen selbst zu Wort. Adolph Diesterweg, einen der bekanntesten Pädagogen seiner Zeit, lernen wir aus der Sicht seiner Ehefrau kennen. Die vorzeitige Pensionierung des liberalen Schulpolitikers greift tief in das Familienleben ein. Es wird auch von politischen Ereignissen berührt, so von der aufgewühlten Stimmung in Berlin nach dem Mordanschlag auf das Königspaar 1844 und während der Barrikadenkämpfe vier Jahre später. Ein friedliches Gegenstück bilden Urlaubsbegegnungen mit dem »Kindergartenvater'Friedrich Fröbel in der kleinen Welt des Herzogtums Sachsen-Meiningen.

In the opening session the Chairman of the Seminar underlined the important role of the permanent monitoring panels with respect to the 15 planetary emergencies. A special session of the Seminar was devoted to reporting on the activity of these panels. Contributions on'Medicine & Biotechnologies'were presented by Paul Brown, Robert Will, Benardino Ghetti and Guy de The. The Theme'Defence Against Cosmic Objects'was covered by Walter Huebner, John Remo and William Bottke;'Water and Pollution'by Herman Bouwer, Gennady Palshin, David Rice and Paolo Ricci; and problems centered upon'Food'by Carlo Lerici and Silvia Franceschi,'Proliferation and Weapons of Mass Destruction'was discussed by Henning Wegener, Andrei Piontkovski, Reiner Huber, Tony Mason, Willis Stanley, Gregory Canavan and Povl Olgaard;'Limits of Development'by Hilmar Schubert and Leonardas Kairiukstis; and'Energy'by Stanislav Subbotin, Andrei Gagarinski and Eugeni Velikhov. T D Lee closed the Seminar by emphasizing the link between basic science and planetary emergencies.

Umbilical cord blood, previously discarded, has emerged as a new source of stem cells for hematologic reconstitution, bone marrow failures and other hematologic deficiencies. It has become increasingly clear that umbilical cord tissue contains unique stem cells of great potential for regenerative medicine. Importantly, umbilical cord blood is abundant, can be banked and transported with ease, and thus has an indisputable potential for future regenerative therapies. Driven by a massive interest for regenerative medicine and ethically acceptable stem cell sources, the scientific literature on umbilical cord stem cells has exploded.This book provides a consolidated overview of basic, translational as well as clinical research in academic institutions and industry, on hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells contained within umbilical cord tissue, as well as other more recently discovered stem and precursor cells of not yet fully elucidated potential.
