Der Autor berichtet über seine Erfahrungen bei der Bearbeitung des Themas und zeigt Möglichkeiten auf, das Thema einzubringen, auch wenn es von der Gruppe selbst nicht unbedingt genannt wird. Aus der Perspektive des nächsten evolutionären Entwicklungsschrittes kann es wichtig sein, auf ein Themenfeld hinzuweisen, das nicht im Blick ist, aber aus der externen Beobachtung und aus einem ökosystemaren Blick heraus für die Gruppenperspektive Bedeutung haben könnte, ohne der Gruppe die eigene Entscheidung über die zu bearbeitenden Themen zu nehmen.

Zukunftsorientierte Unternehmen fokussieren sich nicht allein auf ihren Markt, ihre Produkte und ihre bisherigen Produktionsweisen, sondern verstehen sich als Teil eines umfassenden Okosystems. Die Welt vernetzt sich rasant und so wird es zur Uberlebensfrage, ob man das eigene, sich permanent verandernde Okosystem in seiner mehrdimensionalen Komplexitat erfassen kann und bereit ist, sich schnell an Veranderungen und neue Entwicklungen von ausen anzupassen. Die Natur erweist sich als guter Lehrer: Ihre Okosysteme funktionieren seit knapp vier Milliarden Jahren, mit hochkomplexen Lebensformen und Vernetzung. Der Erfolg naturlicher Okosysteme basiert im Wesentlichen auf funf Prinzipien, die hier erlautert und auf die Wirtschaft ubertragen werden. Die Beachtung dieser Gesetzmasigkeiten evolutionar bewahrter Systeme zeigt konkrete Wege auf, um wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Prozesse dauerhaft erfolgreicher zu gestalten, Chancen und Risiken schneller zu erkennen und einen aktiven Beitrag zur nachhaltigen Entwicklung zu leisten.

The predictive value of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-height ratio (WtHR) to define cardiometabolic risk is unclear in childhood obesity.[corrected] The associations between BMI, WtHR, or WC and cardiometabolic risk markers were analyzed in a multicenter data collection of obese youth.BMI, WtHR, and WC were retrospectively evaluated in 1278 patients (11-18 years, 53% boys) from the German/Austrian/Swiss Adiposity Patients Registry.Parameters were correlated with homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance, fasting insulin, blood pressure, transaminases, lipids and uric acid, applying adjusted regression models, with age group, pubertal stage and gender as covariates.Homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance and fasting insulin were most strongly correlated with BMI, independent of age group or gender. Lipids, transaminases, and uric acid were most strongly correlated with WC with stronger associations for boys. Correlations between BMI and WC as well as metabolic markers and systolic blood pressure showed only minor differences. The pattern of relationship changed during the course of pubertal development with the strongest associations for pubertal children. None of the parameters showed a dependency on WtHR that was superior to BMI or WC.There is only small additional benefit in using WC measurements for routine pediatric care in addition to BMI for predicting metabolic risk. For all parameters, the relationship is strongest during midpuberty, emphasizing that among obese pubertal adolescents, anthropometric measures (BMI and WC) best predict cardiometabolic comorbidities. WtHR does not seem to be superior to BMI or WC in predicting metabolic or cardiovascular risk related to childhood obesity.

Modern veterinary medicine offers numerous options for treatment and clinicians must decide on the best one to use. Interventions causing short-term harm but ultimately benefitting the animal are often justified as being in the animal's best interest. Highly invasive clinical veterinary procedures with high morbidity and low success rates may not be in the animal's best interest. A working party was set up by the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia to discuss the ethics of clinical veterinary practice and improve the approach to ethically challenging clinical cases. Relevant literature was reviewed. The 'best interest principle' was translated into norms immanent to the clinic by means of the 'open question argument'. Clinical interventions with potential to cause harm need ethical justification, and suggest a comparable structure of ethical reflection to that used in the context ofin vivoresearch should be applied to the clinical setting. To structure the ethical debate, pertinent questions for ethical decision-making were identified. These were incorporated into a prototype ethical tool developed to facilitate clinical ethical decision-making. The ethical question 'Where should the line on treatment be drawn' should be replaced by 'How should the line be drawn?'

Murine listeriosis is a paradigm to understand host pathogen interactions. Airway infections with Listeria monocytogenes, although representing a serious problem in early onset neonatal listeriosis, has not been investigated in detail in animal models so far. Here, the susceptibility of BALB/c, DBA/2 and C57BL/6 mice towards an intratracheal (i.t.) infection with virulent L. monocytogenes EGDe and the attenuated variant L. monocytogenes EGD hlyW491A(pERL3-CMVGFP) is reported. The course of infection was characterized by determination of bacterial numbers in the organs and assessment of the health condition of the mice. The distribution and cellular localization of Listeria in the airways was assessed by immunocytochemistry and confocal and electron microscopy. The differential susceptibility of inbred mouse strains to airway infections with L. monocytogenes could be assigned to the major virulence factor listeriolysin O. Resistant C57BL/6 mice were not affected by the two listerial strains. In contrast, BALB/c and DBA/2 mice showed differential susceptibility towards L. monocytogenes EGDe and attenuated bacteria, with all the mice being killed by the wild-type bacteria but rarely by the variant that secretes a listeriolysin of only 10% activity of that of the wild-type toxin. Thus, listeriolysin is a decisive factor for differential susceptibility against Listeria. After i.t. application, bacteria were predominantly localized in the peribronchiolar space and invaded alveolar macrophages but rarely lung epithelial cells. Dissemination from the lung into the deep organs started almost immediately after application, although a pulmonary bacterial reservoir remained during the first 4 days.

Thirty-two female mice used for embryo transfer or as controls received either metamizol or equal volumes of normal saline administered subcutaneously following induction of anaesthesia with ketamine–xylazine. Body weight was measured immediately before surgery, after 24 and after 48 h. The duration of the surgical anaesthesia was recorded and postoperative behavioural responses were measured. Comparison of the treatment groups revealed no significant differences in body weight and recovery times, nor were other signs of discomfort detected in either treatment group. It was concluded that administration of metamizol did not provide additional analgesia following embryo transfer in mice anaesthetized with ketamine–xylazine.

Objective To review the beneficial and adverse effects of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) applicable to cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in the contexts of various temperature levels and techniques for achieving TH. Databases used Multiple electronic literature searches were performed using PubMed and Google for articles published from June 2012 to December 2014. Relevant terms (e.g. ‘hypothermia’, ‘cardiopulmonary bypass’, ‘cardiac surgery’, ‘neuroprotection’) were used to search for original articles, letters and reviews without species limitation. Reviews were included despite potential publication bias. References from the studies identified were also searched to find other potentially relevant citations. Abstracts, case reports, conference presentations, editorials and expert opinions were excluded. Conclusions Therapeutic hypothermia is an essential measure of neuroprotection during cardiac surgery that may be achieved most effectively by intravascular cooling using hypothermic CPB. For most cardiac surgical procedures, mild to modest (32–36 °C) TH will be sufficient to assure neuroprotection and will avoid most of the adverse effects of hypothermia that occur at lower body core temperatures.

The electroencephalogram (EEG) Narcotrend index (NI) has been shown to improve anaesthetic depth monitoring in isoflurane-anaesthetised sheep. Data obtained from 13 anaesthetised juvenile female sheep were analysed retrospectively in order to assess the relationship between clinical stages of anaesthesia (CS) and NI during both propofol and isoflurane anaesthesia. Polynomial regression analysis revealed no significant association between CS and NI for propofol (R = 0.374, R(2) = 0.140, P = 0.403) but for isoflurane anaesthesia (R = 0.548, R(2) = 0.301, P = 0.010) there was a significant relationship. Furthermore, a strong correlation existed between end-tidal isoflurane concentration (ISOET) and CS (r = -0.463, P = 0.008). A combination of assessment of clinical signs and analogous EEG patterns is recommended during propofol anaesthesia.

Microelectronics have developed very fast in the past. The design process of those systems is getting more and more complex and new design methods have to be applied continuously. One main observation is the increasing design level over time, hence, the re-use of components is getting more important. A key challenge of IC design is the selection of a system architecture which fulfills all requirements in terms of data throughput, area, timing, power and cost. In this paper, we present a a problem class for the optimal component selection in order to assist in selecting the best available alternatives. We will show how to express top-level constraints and optimisation targets including dependencies between components. In addition, heuristic solving algorithms will be presented. The evaluation section shows that the presented algorithms perform well on typical problem sets.

Summary • Introduction: Long-acting opioids may be needed for postoperative pain relief in sheep. Reports on the analgesic efficacy of the partial μ agonist buprenorphine, however, are controversial. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the effects of buprenorphine with the μ full agonist piritramide on clinical pain following orthopaedic surgery in sheep. • Material and methods: Postoperative analgesia of intramuscular buprenorphine (0.01 mg/kg) and piritramide (0.57 mg/kg) were evaluated in a prospective, randomised and blinded study in 22 ewes submitted to an experimental tibia osteotomy. For evaluation of postoperative analgesia the time from extubation to first attempt to stand, to standing, to first food/water uptake, to first postoperative analgesic treatment, the number of animals treated per group, postoperative behaviour and lameness scores were compared. • Results: The distribution of behavioural scores in standing/walking animals was significantly different (P = 0.018) between the two treatment groups. In the buprenorphine group behaviour scores ranged more in the lower score range while higher scores were recorded in the piritramide group. In both groups the same number of nine sheep required additional postoperative analgesic treatment at almost identical time intervals. No significant differences existed for the other variables. • Conclusion: Buprenorphine and piritramide provided effective analgesia following tibia osteotomy in sheep with a slightly better quality in animals pre-treated with buprenorphine.

Summary Epidural opioids exert segmentally limited spinal analgesia by acting at dorsal horn neurons. While the spinal cord may be the predominant site of action for hydrophilic opioids such as morphine, initial supraspinal effects have been suggested for lipophilic opioids such as buprenorphine. In view of significant systemic effects, the value of epidural administration of lipophilic opioids in human patients has been questioned. Since epidural buprenorphine may be beneficial for hindlimb surgeries in sheep, intraoperative hemodynamic and central nervous effects were evaluated. In a prospective, randomized, and placebo-controlled study, 15 adult sheep anesthetized for cranial cruciate ligament reconstruction were treated with either epidural buprenorphine (5 μg/kg, n = 5), intramuscular buprenorphine (5 μg/kg, n = 5), or epidural saline (0.15 ml/kg, n = 5) preoperatively. Heart rate, arterial blood pressures and the electroencephalographic variables ϑ/δ ratio, α/δ ratio, β/δ ratio, median power frequency (MED), and 80% spectral edge frequency were recorded before and immediately after skin incision and during drilling a tunnel through the tibia bone. Arterial pressures after epidural buprenorphine were significantly lower compared with epidural saline but were quite similar to intramuscular buprenorphine before skin incision. Mean EEG ϑ/δ ratios and MED values following epidural and intramuscular buprenorphine were significantly lower compared with epidural saline but quite similar for the two buprenorphine groups during drilling. In conclusion, similar hemodynamic and electroencephalographic effects of epidural and intramuscular buprenorphine suggest systemic effects of epidural buprenorphine in sheep.

SUMMARY The dissociative anaesthetic ketamine is reported to provide potent analgesia after administration of subanaesthetic doses in human beings. To evaluate the analgesic effects of ketamine as an adjunct to inhalation anaesthesia in horses, haemodynamic and electroencephalographic changes were recorded for 10 min after injection of ketamine (0.5 mg/kg iv; n=7) or equal volumes of 0.9% NaCl solution (n=5) in surgically stimulated horses anaesthetised at approximately 1.3% end-tidal concentration of isoflurane. Neither the haemodynamic variables (mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate) nor the quantitated EEG variables (theta/delta ratio, alpha/delta ratio, beta/delta ratio, median power frequency) and 80% spectral edge frequency were affected significantly by the ketamine dose used. Comparing data obtained from both groups of horses, our results suggest that iv administration of 0.5 mg/kg bwt of ketamine was ineffective in suppressing haemodynamic and electroencephalographic responses to surgical stimulation.

We present a perturbation result for generators of ${C}_{0}$ -semigroups which can be considered as an operator theoretic version of the Weiss-Staffans perturbation theorem for abstract linear systems. The results are illustrated by applications to the Desch-Schappacher and the Miyadera-Voigt perturbation theorems and to unbounded perturbations of the boundary conditions of a generator.

Objective—To evaluate the influence of various anesthetic protocols and 3 multiples of isoflurane minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) before and after supramaximal stimulation on electroencephalographic (EEG) variables in dogs. Animals—6 healthy adult Beagles (mean ± SD body weight, 16.3 ± 1.0 kg). Procedures—All dogs underwent 3 anesthesia sessions with a minimum of 1 week separating sessions: isoflurane alone, isoflurane and a constant rate infusion of dexmedetomidine (3 μg/kg/h, IV; ID), and isoflurane and a constant rate infusion of remifentanil (18 μg/kg/h, IV; IR). The MAC of isoflurane was determined via supramaximal electrical stimulation. Quantitative variables (frequency bands and their ratios, median frequency, 95% spectral edge frequency [SEF], and an EEG index) were determined directly before and after supramaximal stimulation at 0.75, 1.0, and 1.5 times the MAC for each session of 20-second epochs. Results—Mean ± SD isoflurane MACs for isoflurane alone, ID, and IR were 1.7 ± 0.3%, 1.0 ± 0.1%, and 1.0 ± 0.1%, respectively. Prestimulation 95% SEF decreased significantly with increasing MAC during the isoflurane alone and ID sessions. Significant decreases in δ frequency band (0.5 to 3.5 Hz) presence and significant increases in β frequency band (> 12.5 Hz) presence, median frequency, and 95% SEF after stimulation were dependent on the MAC and anesthetic protocol. The EEG index had the strongest correlation with increasing MAC during the isoflurane-alone session (ρ = −0.89) and the least in the IR session (ρ = −0.15). Conclusions and Clinical Relevance—Anesthesia with isoflurane alone resulted in the greatest overall EEG depression of all protocols. Use of remifentanil depressed the EEG response to nociceptive stimulation more strongly than did dexmedetomidine. The EEG variables evaluated did not appear useful when used alone as indicators of anesthetic depth in dogs.

Anaesthesia and analgesia in mice is particularly challenging because the small body size is associated with a high incidence of fatal hypothermia. Moreover, the anaesthetic dose required to achieve an adequate level of anaesthetic depth may be variable and highly dependent on strain, sex or age. Therefore, preanaesthetic considerations as well as a variety of injectable and inhalant anaesthetic techniques reported for use in laboratory mice are addressed with an emphasis on anaesthesia in neonates and pups. In addition to the monitoring of respiratory and cardiovascular function during anaesthesia, different techniques of perioperative analgesia are presented. Finally, methods used for euthanasia in mice are also addressed.

Objective To estimate the prevalence of epilepsy and possible risk factors in children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus. Study design We conducted an observational cohort study based on the Diabetes Patienten Verlaufsdokumentation database including data from 45 851 patients (52% male) with type 1 diabetes mellitus, age 13.9 ± 4.3 years (mean ± SD) and duration of diabetes mellitus 5.4 ± 4.2 years. The database was searched for the concomitant diagnosis of epilepsy or epileptic convulsions and for antiepileptic medication. Results A total of 705 patients with epilepsy were identified, giving a prevalence of 15.5 of 1000. A total of 375 patients were treated with antiepileptic medication, and 330 patients were without anticonvulsive therapy. Patients with epilepsy were younger at onset of diabetes mellitus and shorter than patients without epilepsy, and their weight and body mass index were comparable. No difference could be demonstrated for metabolic control, type of insulin treatment, insulin dose, and prevalence of B-cell specific autoantibodies. The frequency of severe hypoglycemia was lower in patients treated with antiepileptic medication. The risk for diabetic ketoacidosis was almost double in patients with epilepsy compared with patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus alone (P Conclusion Children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus show an increased prevalence of epileptic seizures. For unknown reasons, there is an association between epilepsy and diabetic ketoacidosis in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Es ist noch gar nicht so lange her, da wurden wir mit unserem Ansatz „Evolutionsmanagement - von der Natur fur die Wirtschaft lernen“ von vielen belachelt. Das hat sich geandert. Eine Reihe von Ereignissen macht die in der Wirtschaft agierenden Menschen heute nachdenklich und fordert die Diskussion alternativer Ansatze.

In order to provide objective measures of anaesthetic depth for periods without clinical signs (e.g., cardiopulmonary bypass [CPB]), the correlation between the electroencephalographic Narcotrend index (NI), 95% spectral edge frequency (SEF95), median power frequency (MPF) and clinical stages of anaesthesia was investigated in 16 juvenile sheep. Data were recorded during recovery from anaesthesia for pulmonary or aortic valve replacement. A significant (P0.05) negative correlation was found between clinical stages of anaesthesia and NI (r(s) = -0.534) and SEF95 (r(s) = -0.543). No significant correlation existed between anaesthetic stages and MPF (r(s) = -0.292, P0.05). The sensitivity of NI, SEF95 and MPF to assure an adequate level of anaesthesia was 71.43%, 66.67% and 44.44%, respectively, while the specificity of the descriptors ranged between 97.44 and 92.31%. No significant age-related effect on EEG data and stages of anaesthesia was detected when data from sheep between 4 and 6 months of age were compared with data obtained from 8- to 12-month old sheep. In conclusion, NI seems to be the most appropriate EEG descriptor to assure adequate depth of anaesthesia in juvenile, isoflurane-anaesthetized sheep.

Isolation of lungs from the circulation during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) results in the loss of end-tidal anaesthetic measurement as a monitor of anaesthetic depth. The objective of our study was to test whether the isoflurane concentration measured at the oxygenator exhaust (ISO(PO-OX)) could be used as an alternative. Five juvenile ewes were anaesthetised for experimental aortic valve replacement during hypothermic CPB. One sheep recovered from anaesthesia with signs of CNS excitement and was excluded from electroencephalogram (EEG) data analysis. Um ihre gute Position im Grobblechmarkt zu festigen und auch in Zukunft nachhaltige Gewinne zu erzielen, fordert die Dillinger Hutte seit mehreren Jahren einen kontinuierlichen Verbesserungsprozess. In diesem Zusammenhang wurde im Jahr 2004 unter dem Namen „DH-TOP 2007“ ein umfangreiches Ergebnisverbesserungsprojekt aufgelegt. Das vorrangige Ziel des Projektes war es, eine nachhaltige Ergebnisverbesserung von 80 Mio. Euro jahrlich spatestens ab 2007 zu erreichen. Dafur wurden quantitative Einsparungsziele bei den Sach- und Personalkosten sowie qualitative Verbesserungen der Arbeitssicherheit und der Arbeitsqualitat vorgegeben.

Eine moderne Logistik ist in ihrer Ausrichtung ganzheitlich, systemisch und integrativ (Baumgarten 2004). Die Natur hat genau auf der Basis dieser Prinzipien in ihrer Millionen Jahre alten Geschichte herausragende Logistik-Leistungen hervorgebracht. So transportieren die Blattschneideameisen zur Errichtung ihrer unterirdischen Bauten, die eine Flache von bis zu 50 Quadratmetern einnehmen konnen, rund eine Milliarde Ladungen Erdreich an die Oberflache und bewegen dabei bis zu 40 Tonnen Boden, sie selber aber sind nicht groser als ein bis zwei Zentimeter (Harf und Bischoff 2007). Es ist daher sinnvoll, fur die Weiterentwicklung der Logistik auf die Natur zu schauen und von der hier entwickelten Vielfalt an Losungen zu lernen. Diese Herangehensweise, die Natur zu analysieren und als Vorbild fur wirtschaftliche und organisatorische Prozesse zu nutzen, ist die Vorgehensweise des Evolutionsmanagements (Otto et al. 2007). Im Folgenden wollen wir diesen Ansatz naher erlautern und auf das Handlungsfeld der Logistik anwenden.

A controller design procedure based on sliding-mode control is adopted to automotive engine control at idle condition. The aim is to track the engine speed and the torque reserve at their reference values despite unknown load-torque disturbances on the engine. Uncertainties in the system parameters and additional time delays are also taken into account. A validated nonlinear simulation model is used to assess the performance of the closed-loop system. Finally, it is shown by experimental results that the closed-loop system is robust with respect to the aforementioned uncertainties and disturbances.

The effects of averaging epochs on electroencephalographic (EEG) responses to visceral stimulation has been determined in seven isoflurane-anaesthetized dogs. Quantitative EEG variables including 80% spectral edge frequency (SEF80), median frequency (MF), relative power in the delta, theta, alpha, beta band and power band ratios (theta/delta, alpha/delta, beta/delta) were recorded over 1min before stimulation and during a 1-minute stimulation period. During off-line analysis EEG variables were derived from either single 2-second EEG epochs or as an average from 5, 10, 15 and 30 consecutive 2-second epochs. Noxious stimulation resulted in significant increases in SEF80, MF, alpha power, beta power, alpha/delta ratio and beta/delta ratio. The number of variables that were significantly affected as well as the strength of changes as indicated by p-values, however, varied with the number of epochs subjected to averaging. The data suggest that stimulation-induced EEG changes may be more pronounced at lower rather than at higher averaging rates.

The effects of surgical stimuli on haemodynamic and electroencephalographic (EEG) variables were determined in 25 adult ewes undergoing an experimental orthopaedic procedure in isoflurane anaesthesia. Data were recorded after 15 min of constant end-tidal concentration of approximately 2.2% isoflurane (SS: steady state=baseline), during skin disinfection (DIS), incision (INC), drilling of the first hole through the tibia (DRI) and insertion of a threaded pin (PIN) for external fixation. Stimulation resulted in a significant increase in systolic and mean arterial pressure above SS at INC, DRI and PIN. Haemodynamic changes were accompanied by either significant increases or decreases in EEG median frequency (MF) and 80% spectral edge frequency (SEF80) above or below SS at all four stimulation time points suggesting ‘arousal’ or ‘paradoxical arousal’ reaction, respectively. We conclude, that either type of EEG activation pattern could be elicited dependent on stimulation intensity and level of anaesthetic depth.

Haemodynamic responses are routinely used for monitoring anaesthesia, but they can be elicited at spinal or brainstem levels and therefore do not provide information on cerebrocortical activity. To test the possibility that electroencephalography (EEG) might provide an objective assessment of unconsciousness and depth of anaesthesia the haemodynamic and EEG data from 17 ewes anaesthetised with halothane were analysed. Data were recorded at least every five minutes. An increase of 10 per cent or more in heart rate, systolic arterial pressure (SAP), or mean arterial pressure (MAP) was defined as a positive haemodynamic response to surgical stimulation. Simultaneously recorded EEG variables included delta-, theta-, and beta-frequency band power, power ratios (theta/delta, alpha/delta, beta/delta), 80 per cent spectral edge frequency (SEF 80), and median frequency. In 11 of the ewes, a positive haemodynamic response was accompanied by a significant decrease in delta activity and significant increases in alpha/delta ratio, beta/delta ratio, and SEF 80, and there were significant correlations between the changes in heart rate, and delta activity and beta/delta ratio. In the other six ewes, there were no significant EEG responses in association with haemodynamic changes of less than 10 per cent.

Innerhalb des Forum Ziviler Friedensdienst (forumZFD) gab es schon bald nach der Grundung eine Diskussion daruber, dass es nicht ausreicht, ideell fur einen Zivilen Friedensdienst einzutreten, sondern dass das forumZFD selber auch Aktivitaten zur praktischen Umsetzung durchfuhren sollte. Ein wichtiger erster Schritt dazu war die Modell-Ausbildung in ziviler Konfliktbearbeitung in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Land NRW. Ein zweiter Schritt zur praktischen Friedensarbeit ergab sich einige Zeit nach dem Ende des Bosnienkrieges.
