This research aimed to determine the association between biosecurity and animal welfare measures in large-scale fattening turkey farms in Hungary. Large-scale farms raising male fattening turkeys across Hungary were contacted, with 24 agreeing to participate. The Biocheck.UGent questionnaire was used to evaluate biosecurity measures, and Animal Welfare Indicators (AWIN) protocol was used for welfare assessment. The association between biosecurity and welfare indicators was investigated by correlation testing and prediction accuracy using random forest classification. The areas of biosecurity that were shown to be closely linked to the welfare index were the organization of the farm (farm management, supply of materials), the control and hygienic measures implemented between farm structures, cleaning and disinfection measures on the farm, and control and hygienic measures implemented in the case of farm workers and visitors upon entrance and exit. The study highlighted the link between biosecurity and animal welfare in turkey production, concluding that enhanced biosecurity measures correlate with better welfare outcomes and emphasizing the need for comprehensive and well-implemented biosecurity protocols.

Humboldt Gletscher is a 100-km wide, slow-moving glacier in north Greenland which holds a 19-cm global sea level equivalent. Humboldt has been the fourth largest contributor to sea level rise since 1972 but the cause of its mass loss has not been elucidated. Multi-beam echo sounding data collected in 2019 indicate a seabed 200 m deeper than previously known. Conductivity temperature depth data reveal the presence of warm water of Atlantic origin at 0°C at the glacier front and a warming of the ocean waters by 0.9 ± 0.1°C since 1962. Using an ocean model, we reconstruct grounded ice undercutting by the ocean, combine it with calculated retreat caused by ice thinning to floatation, and are able to fully explain the observed retreat. Two thirds of the retreat are caused by undercutting of grounded ice, which is a physical process not included in most ice sheet models.

Bathymetry (seafloor depth), is a critical parameter providing the geospatial context for a multitude of marine scientific studies. Since 1997, the International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAO) has been the authoritative source of bathymetry for the Arctic Ocean. IBCAO has merged its efforts with the Nippon Foundation-GEBCO-Seabed 2030 Project, with the goal of mapping all of the oceans by 2030. Here we present the latest version (IBCAO Ver. 4.0), with more than twice the resolution (200 × 200 m versus 500 × 500 m) and with individual depth soundings constraining three times more area of the Arctic Ocean (∼19.8% versus 6.7%), than the previous IBCAO Ver. 3.0 released in 2012. Modern multibeam bathymetry comprises ∼14.3% in Ver. 4.0 compared to ∼5.4% in Ver. 3.0. Thus, the new IBCAO Ver. 4.0 has substantially more seafloor morphological information that offers new insights into a range of submarine features and processes; for example, the improved portrayal of Greenland fjords better serves predictive modelling of the fate of the Greenland Ice Sheet.

The nature of the Ionian Sea crust has been the subject of scientific debate for more than 30 years, mainly because seismic imaging of the deep crust and upper mantle of the Ionian Abyssal Plain (IAP) has not been conclusive to date. The IAP is sandwiched between the Calabrian and Hellenic subduction zones in the central Mediterranean. A NNE–SSW-oriented 131 km long seismic refraction and wide-angle reflection profile, consisting of eight ocean bottom seismometers and hydrophones, was acquired in 2014. The profile was designed to univocally confirm the proposed oceanic nature of the IAP crust as a remnant of the Tethys and to confute its interpretation as a strongly thinned part of the African continental crust. A P-wave velocity model developed from travel-time forward modelling is refined by gravimetric data and synthetic modelling of the seismic data. A roughly 6–7 km thick crust with velocities ranging from 5.1 to 7.2 km s−1, top to bottom, can be traced throughout the IAP. In the vicinity of the Medina seamounts at the southern IAP boundary, the crust thickens to about 9 km and seismic velocities decrease to 6.8 km s−1 at the crust–mantle boundary. The seismic velocity distribution and depth of the crust–mantle boundary in the IAP document its oceanic nature and support the interpretation of the IAP as a remnant of the Tethys lithosphere with the Malta Escarpment as a transform margin and a Tethys opening in the NNW–SSE direction.

BackgroundCardiac injury associated with cytokine release frequently occurs in SARS-CoV-2 mediated coronavirus disease (COVID19) and mortality is particularly high in these patients. The mechanistic role of the COVID19 associated cytokine-storm for the concomitant cardiac dysfunction and associated arrhythmias is unclear. Moreover, the role of anti-inflammatory therapy to mitigate cardiac dysfunction remains elusive.Aims and methodsWe investigated the effects of COVID19-associated inflammatory response on cardiac cellular function as well as its cardiac arrhythmogenic potential in rat and induced pluripotent stem cell derived cardiomyocytes (iPS-CM). In addition, we evaluated the therapeutic potential of the IL-1β antagonist Canakinumab using state of the art in-vitro confocal and ratiometric high-throughput microscopy.ResultsIsolated rat ventricular cardiomyocytes were exposed to control or COVID19 serum from intensive care unit (ICU) patients with severe ARDS and impaired cardiac function (LVEF 41±5%; 1/3 of patients on veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation; CK 154±43 U/l). Rat cardiomyocytes showed an early increase of myofilament sensitivity, a decrease of Ca2+ transient amplitudes and altered baseline [Ca2+] upon exposure to patient serum. In addition, we used iPS-CM to explore the long-term effect of patient serum on cardiac electrical and mechanical function. In iPS-CM, spontaneous Ca2+ release events were more likely to occur upon incubation with COVID19 serum and nuclear as well as cytosolic Ca2+ release were altered. Co-incubation with Canakinumab had no effect on pro-arrhythmogenic Ca2+ release or Ca2+ signaling during excitation-contraction coupling, nor significantly influenced cellular automaticity.ConclusionSerum derived from COVID19 patients exerts acute cardio-depressant and chronic pro-arrhythmogenic effects in rat and iPS-derived cardiomyocytes. Canakinumab had no beneficial effect on cellular Ca2+ signaling during excitation-contraction coupling. The presented method utilizing iPS-CM and in-vitro Ca2+ imaging might serve as a novel tool for precision medicine. It allows to investigate cytokine related cardiac dysfunction and pharmacological approaches useful therein.

C2H4−O2 reactions form ethylene oxide (EO) on Ag nanoparticles dispersed on α‐Al2O3 and promoted with alkali and other elements, with Re and Cs most frequently used in practice. Traces of alkyl chlorides (e. g., C2H5Cl) and alkanes in much larger amounts are added to reactants to balance the rate of deposition and removal (and the coverage) of Cl adatoms (Cl*) on Ag surfaces. Such Cl adlayers retain Ag surface ensembles that form O2‐derived intermediates that favor EO synthesis, but typically decrease O2 activation rates. A series of Ag/α‐Al2O3 catalysts (with and without Re or Cs) are used here to examine the role of promoters and Cl moderators through an analysis of the effects of reaction conditions and C2H5Cl levels using convection‐reaction constructs and a mechanistic formalism that considers O2 (as chemisorbed O2*) as the reactant in EO synthesis through one electrophilic O‐atom, with the second O‐atom (O*) acting as a unselective nucleophile that must be scavenged by a sacrificial reductant (C2H4 or EO); such channels are precluded by any intervening O2 dissociation events (that form two O*). O2 consumption rates in C2H4−O2 reactions decrease 10‐fold upon exposing Ag/α‐Al2O3 to C2H5Cl, evincing persistent Cl* species that block active sites and require >104 C2H4 oxidation turnovers to be removed. Activation barriers do not change but relative rates of epoxidation versus combustion increase in the presence of this refractory Cl* adlayer, which reduces the number and shrinks the size of available site ensembles without altering their intrinsic reactivity for O2 activation to form O2* but attenuating rates of its subsequent dissociation. Refractory O* adlayers also form on Ag surfaces, as shown by the accumulation of persistent O* species upon exposing reduced Ag particles to N2O. Inter‐atom repulsive forces weaken O* binding and destabilize N2O decomposition transition states to eventually allow stable N2 and O2 evolution for catalytic N2O decomposition, which occurs at landing ensembles formed at interstices of refractory adlayers. Cl* forms denser adlayers than O*, as evidenced by a 10‐fold decrease not only to C2H4−O2 rates but also to N2O stoichiometric and catalytic rates and O* uptakes. The occasional evolution of O2, which forms larger landing ensembles that more readily form 2O* from O2, occurs with higher frequency from O* than mixed O*/Cl* adlayers, and this effect of Cl* to inhibit (O−O)* dissociation is demonstrated in CO probe reaction studies, which show that highly reactive bound dioxygen species are retained to a greater extent when adlayers comprise both Cl* and O*. Re and Cs do not influence the nature of such adlayers but increase and decrease, respectively, the number of acid sites and selectivity losses via EO combustion. Their respective domains may also block a modest fraction of Ag surfaces without consequences on intrinsic O2 activation rates or EO selectivities. The effects of Re beyond those reported here may emerge upon synthetic protocols that alter Re location and Ag−Re intimacy to enable channels which utilize both O‐atoms in epoxidation.
