Abstract

The morphology, structure, and magnetism of Fe films on an oxygen-precovered, stepped Cu(1 1 25) surface are investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, and magneto-optical Kerr effect analysis. It is concluded from the study that oxygen adsorption strongly affects the structure and spin-reorientation transition of Fe films.

Abstract

The giant magnetoresistance of crystalline Fe/Cu/Fe(001) epitaxial structures characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy are presented. The sheet resistance was best modeled using a low temperature mean free path of 25 nm in the Fe layer.

Abstract

A study was conducted to analyze the influence of strain-induced volume anisotropy and surface anisotropy in the spin reorientation of Ni/Cu(100) ultrathin films. Surface morphology by low temperature deposition was examined. The experiments were carried out in an ultrahigh vacuum multichamber system that includes scanning tunneling microscopy and magneto-optical Kerr effect.

Abstract

We have studied the morphology, structure and magnetism of Fe films thermally deposited on stepped Cu(111) by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). At room temperature, in the submonolayer range Fe films grow as quasi one-dimensional stripes along the upper step edges due to a strong decoration effect. Between 1.4 and 1.8 monolayer coverage the stripes percolate and become two-dimensional films. Between 2.3 and 2.7 monolayer coverage the films undergo a structural transition from fcc(111) to bcc(110) with Kurdjumov-Sachs orientation. In the fcc range the films have a low net magnetic moment, and a perpendicular easy magnetization axis. The magnetization switches to an in-plane high-moment phase correlated with the fcc to bcc structural transformation. Index Terms - Stepped metal surfaces, ultra thin film growth and magnetism

24. Magnetism in one dimension: Fe on Cu(111)

Abstract

The magnetism and the morphology of one-dimensional Fe stripes on a Cu(111) vicinal surface with perpendicular magnetization are investigated. Scanning tunneling microscopy shows that the Fe stripes have nanometer width and are aligned in parallel along the [011] direction. From the magnetization curves it is inferred that the stripes exhibit a ferromagnetic behavior well below the nominal thickness of one monolayer. In contrast to two-dimensional films, the magnetization of the stripes is not only temperature but also time dependent. The dynamics of the stripes have been described by a micromagnetic Ising model with Glauber dynamics, yielding an effective anisotropy constant K1 of 0.65±0.15 M J/m3.
