1. How to 'Censor' a Black Hole Singularity and Beyond

Abstract: We argue that a black hole can be viewed as a gravitational optical element that images its interior onto the horizon. Being diffraction limited the "Airy hyper-ball" that forms as a result of interference of gravitational waves, does not allow for infinite resolution. Thereby, effectively censoring the geodetic singularity. The mechanism proposed must imply intrinsic angular momentum as in the Kerr black hole solution. However, assuming that a static black hole develops from an initial Kerr solution the destroyed hyperball is delegated to the horizon by the principle of increasing entropy. This lost information about the system resolution is now packed on the horizon, which in effect provides the censorship. Should the mechanism be applicable to the early universe, we suggest that the low variance circles seen in the CMB sky are traces of such an interference pattern., Comment: comments are welcome

2. Judicial Backgrounds Influence the Standard of Review.

Abstract: Over the years much ink has been spilled defining, explaining, and critiquing standards of review. Countless lawyers, judges, and scholars have flyspecked distinctions among questions of law, fact, and discretion in an effort to derive a coherent theory explaining when and whether appellate judges should endeavor to correct trial court error. Most of these theories have been premised on the notion that standards of appellate review, although sometimes ill-defined, are applied based on consistent legal or rational standards. Our research, however, supports those scholars who posit that standards of review are often influenced by extraneous factors not anchored in a coherent legal conception of deference. We observe that across a broad spectrum of cases, different panels of jurists apply standards of review in a disparate manner, influenced by their personal backgrounds. Our research explores numerous aspects of personal background, including prior professional legal experience, length of time on the trial court, gender, and political affiliation. Among these categories, we discovered that only one exhibited a statistically significant impact on the selection and application of the standard of review: the type of prior professional legal experience of panelists. Specifically, we find that the criminal or civil practice background of jurists on a reviewing panel influences ultimate outcomes but also shapes the selection of the standard of review. Based on our findings, we hypothesize that the collective training and experience of a panel in civil or criminal law significantly shapes their analogic reasoning, i.e., their mental model. Consequently, this background factor exerts more influence than others in determining how and when jurists defer to the trial court. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The VEX Robotics Team is a competition-based group of students at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott Campus. The team designs and constructs robots using standard VEX parts, and competes in university-level VEX Robotics competitions. This year, the organization separated into three teams: Blue, White, and Gold Teams. Each team built one robot and represented Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at VEX competitions. The VEX game for the 2016-2017 season is named “Starstruck.” In the game, each robot scores as many 6-pronged foam stars and 12 in cubes as possible over a 2ft high fence, which divides the field in half. Then, during the last 30 seconds of the 2-minute match, each robot has the opportunity to suspend itself off the ground using a 2 ft high pole located in one of the corners on its side of the field, either 4 inches for a low hang, or 12 inches for a high hang. The teams began the year with brainstorming ideas for robot designs, conducting research, and constructing prototypes. Then the teams constructed their final designs, programmed their robots using the RobotC programming language, and conducted final testing in preparation for the competition. The VEX Robotics Team successfully hosted its second VEX-U competition at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott Campus in November of 2016, and competed in the Southwest VEX-U Tournament on March 4th, 2017– also held at Embry-Riddle’s Prescott Campus. Abstract: We report on a search for the trilepton decay signature from the associated production of supersymmetric gaugino pairs, {tilde {chi}}{sup {plus_minus}}{sub 1}{tilde {chi}}{sub 2}{sup 0}, within the context of minimal supersymmetric models that conserve R parity. This search uses 95 pb{sup {minus}1} of p{bar p} data taken at {radical}(s)=1.8 TeV with the D0 detector. No evidence of a trilepton signature has been found, and a limit on the product of cross section times branching fraction to trileptons is given as a function of {tilde {chi}}{sup {plus_minus}}{sub 1} mass. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: The VEX Robotics Team is a competition-based group on the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott Campus. The team designs and constructs robots using standard VEX parts, and competes in university-level VEX Robotics competitions. This year, the organization had two teams: Blue Team and Gold Team. Each team builds two robots and represents Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at competitions. The VEX game for the 2015-2016 season is named “Nothing But Net.” In the game, each robot alliance scores as many 4-inch foam balls as possible into its respective net, which lies at the opposite corner of the 12’ by 12’ field. Then, during the last 30 seconds of the 2-minute match, one robot from each alliance elevates its partner robot off the ground either 4 inches for a low elevation, or 12 inches for a high elevation. The teams began the year with brainstorming ideas for robot designs, conducting research, and constructing prototypes. Then, the teams constructed their final designs, programmed their robots using the RobotC programming language, and conducted final testing in preparation for competition. The VEX Robotics Team successfully hosted its first VEX-U competition at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott Campus in November of 2015, and is planning on hosting future competitions. Additionally, the team competed at the Southwest VEX-U Tournament on March 5th, 2016 at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. Poster Presentation EAGLE PRIZE AWARD

Abstract: We present measurement of the π0γ*γ, ηγ*γ and η′γ*γ form factors. The π0-form factor is for the first time observed in the space-like region. The transition form factor of the η-meson is determined from its decay modes π+π-π0, π+π-γ and the neutral decay mode γγ. The decay of the η′ is observed in the decay channels ργ, ηπ+π- with η→γγ and in the four charged prong final state stemming from ηπ+π- with the η decaying into π+π-(π0/γ). All form factors agree well with a simple ρ-pole predicted by the vector meson dominance model and also with the QCD inspired Brodsky-Lepage model. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: The production ofb andc quarks ine+e− annihilation has been studied with the CELLO detector in the range from 35 GeV up to the highest PETRA energies. The heavy quarks have been tagged by their semileptonic decays. The charge asymmetries forb quarks at 35 and 43 GeV have been found to beAb=−(22.2±8.1)% andAb=−(49.1±16.5)%, respectively, using a method incorporating jet variables and their correlations for the separation of the heavy quarks from the back ground of the lighter quarks. Forc quarks we obtainAc=−(12.9±8.8)% andAc=+(7.7±14.0)%, respectively. The axial vector coupling constants of the heavy quarksc andb are found to beac=+(0.29±0.46) andab=−(1.15±0.41) taking$B^0 \overline {B^0 } $ mixing into account. The results are in agreement with the expectations from the standard model.

Abstract: We report a measurement of the W boson mass based on an integrated luminosity of 82 pb −1 from pp collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV recorded in 1994-1995 by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We identify W bosons by their decays to e∨ V and extract the mass by fitting the transverse mass spectrum from 28 323 W boson candidates. A sample of 3563 dielectron events, mostly due to Z→ee decays, constrains models of W boson production and the detector. We measure M W = 80.44±0.10(stat)±0.07(syst) GeV. By combining this measurement with our result form the 1992-1993 data set, we obtain M W = 80.43±0.11 GeV.

Abstract: We have searched for first generation scalar leptoquark (LQ) pairs in the enu+jets channel using ppbar collider data (integrated luminosity= 115 pb^-1) collected by the DZero experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992-96. The analysis yields no candidate events. We combine the results with those from the ee+jets and nunu+jets channels to obtain 95% confidence level (CL) upper limits on the LQ pair production cross section as a function of mass and of beta, the branching fraction to a charged lepton. Comparing with the next-to-leading order theory, we set 95% CL lower limits on the LQ mass of 225, 204, and 79 GeV/c^2 for beta=1, 1/2, and 0, respectively.

Abstract: We have searched for the flavor-changing neutral current decay b -> s mu+ mu- in p pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV with the DO detector at Fermilab. We determine the 90% confidence level limit for the branching fraction to be B(b -> X_s mu+ mu-) < 3.2 x 10^{-4}. We argue that this limit is more stringent than the best published limit on this decay rate.

28. Enhancing the detection of seizures with a clustering algorithm

Abstract: Automated detection algorithms of EEG seizures or similar clinical events typically analyze a finite epoch a given channel at a time, producing a probability or a weight estimating how likely it is for the event to resemble a clinical pattern. Epochs are normally shorter than the duration of a seizure, which may spread to more than one electrode. This may result in a weak correspondence between the seizure pattern in the record and its calculated detector event counterpart. As a result, such algorithms suffer from a high rate of false detections. We show that the weights/probabilities of a generic detector can be described as a weight function embedded in a directed graph (digraph). Extended objects such as seizures therefore correspond to the connected components of the digraph. We introduce a clustering algorithm that accounts for the shortcomings of a generic detector of the type described above. By correlating detector results with respect to both time and channel, we effectively extend the detection to an unlimited number of electrodes over an indefinite time. The algorithm is fast (linear - O(m)) and may be implemented in real time. We argue that the algorithm enhances the detection of seizure onset and lowers the rate of false detections. Preliminary results demonstrate a strong correlation between the seizure and the cluster's boundaries and over 50% reduction of false detection rate.

Abstract: We have searched for the pair production of first generation scalar leptoquarks in the $\mathrm{eejj}$ channel using the full data set $(123{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1})$ collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992--1996. We observe no candidates with an expected background of approximately 0.4 events. Comparing the experimental 95% confidence level upper limit to theoretical calculations of the cross section with the assumption of a 100% branching fraction of $\mathrm{eq}$, we set a lower limit on the mass of a first generation scalar leptoquark of $225\mathrm{GeV}{/c}^{2}$. The results of this analysis rule out the interpretation of the excess of high ${Q}^{2}$ events at DESY HERA as leptoquarks which decay exclusively to $\mathrm{eq}$.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the ttbar production cross section in ppbar collisions at root(s) = 1.8TeV by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measurement is based on data from an integrated luminosity of approximately 125 pb^-1 accumulated during the 1992-1996 collider run. We observe 39 ttbar candidate events in the dilepton and lepton+jets decay channels with an expected background of 13.7+-2.2 events. For a top quark mass of 173.3GeV/c^2, we measure the ttbar production cross section to be 5.5+-1.8 pb.

Abstract: We have measured the $\mathrm{WW}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ gauge boson coupling parameters using $p\overline{p}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\gamma}+X$ ( $\ensuremath{\ell}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}e,\ensuremath{\mu}$) events at $\sqrt{s}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.8$ TeV. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $92.8{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, were collected using the D\O{} detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measured cross section times branching ratio for $p\overline{p}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}W\ensuremath{\gamma}+X$ with ${p}_{T}^{\ensuremath{\gamma}}g10$ GeV/c and ${R}_{\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\gamma}}g0.7$ is ${11.3}_{\ensuremath{-}1.5}^{+1.7}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.5$ pb, in agreement with the standard model prediction. The 1 degree of freedom 95% confidence level limits on individual CP-conserving parameters are $\ensuremath{-}0.93l\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\kappa}l0.94$ and $\ensuremath{-}0.31l\ensuremath{\lambda}l0.29$. Similar limits are set on the CP-violating coupling parameters.

Abstract: A search for new physics has been carried out in the channel pp→γγ+E T , as expected in various supersymmetric models. We require two photons with transverse energy E T γ >12GeV and pseudorapidity |η γ | T ) is consistent with background and no events have E T >25GeV. We set limits on production cross sections for selectron, sneutrino, and neutralino pairs, decaying into photons, which range from about 400 fb to 1 pb depending on the sparticle masses. A general limit of 185 fb (95% C.L.) is set on σ(pp→γγE T +X), where E T γ >12GeV, |η γ | T >25GeV.

Abstract: A measurement of the cross section for production of single, isolated photons is reported for transverse energies in the range of 10–125 GeV for two regions of pseudorapidity, |η| -1 of integrated luminosity accumulated in pp collisions at √s=1.8TeV and recorded with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The background, predominantly from jets which fragment to neutral mesons, is estimated using the longitudinal shower shape in the calorimeter. In both pseudorapidity regions the cross section is found to agree with the next-to-leading order QCD prediction for 30≲E T γ ≲80GeV.

Abstract: We present results from a search for anomalous $\mathrm{WW}$ and $\mathrm{WZ}$ production in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.8\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{TeV}$. We used $p\overline{p}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e\ensuremath{\nu}\mathrm{jjX}$ events observed during the 1992--1993 run of the Fermilab Tevatron collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $13.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.7{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. A fit to the transverse momentum spectrum of the $W$ boson yields direct limits on the CP-conserving anomalous $\mathrm{WW}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\mathrm{WWZ}$ coupling parameters of $\ensuremath{-}0.9l\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\kappa}l1.1$ (with $\ensuremath{\lambda}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0$) and $\ensuremath{-}0.6l\ensuremath{\lambda}l0.7$ (with $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\kappa}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0$) at the 95% confidence level, for a form factor scale $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.5\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{TeV}$, assuming that the $\mathrm{WW}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\mathrm{WWZ}$ coupling parameters are equal.

Abstract: The global topologies of inclusive three- and four-jet events produced in $\overline{p}p$ interactions are described. The three- and four-jet events are selected from data recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider operating at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=1800$ GeV. The measured, normalized distributions of various topological variables are compared with parton-level predictions of tree-level QCD calculations. The parton-level QCD calculations are found to be in good agreement with the data. The studies also show that the topological distributions of the different subprocesses involving different numbers of quarks are very similar and reproduce the measured distributions well. The parton-shower Monte Carlo generators provide a less satisfactory description of the topologies of the three- and four-jet events.

Abstract: We report on a search for right-handed W bosons (W R ) with mass greater than 200GeV/c 2 . We used data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp collider at √s=1.8TeV to search for W R decays into an electron and a massive right-handed neutrino W R ± >e ± N R . Using the inclusive electron data, we set mass limits independent of the N R decay: m W R >650GeV/c 2 and m W R >720GeV/c 2 at the 95% confidence level, valid for m N R W R and mN R «m W R , respectively. The latter also represents a new lower limit on the mass of a heavy left-handed W boson (W') decaying into ev. In addition, limits on mWR valid for larger values of the N R mass are obtained assuming that NR decays to an electron and two jets.

Abstract: We have searched for associated production of the lightest chargino W 1 and next-to-lightest neutralino Z 2 of the minimal supersymmetric standard model in pp collisions at √s=1.8 TeV using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 12.5±0.7pb -1 were examined for events containing three isolated leptons. No evidence for W 1 Z 2 pair production was found. Limits on s(W 1 Z 2 )B(W 1 →lνZ 1 )B(Z 2 →llZ 1 ) are presented.

Abstract: We present a search for pair produced top squarks, the supersymmetric partners of the top quark, using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp collider. We consider a scenario in which the lighter of the two top squarks t 1 decays with 100% branching fraction to a charm quark and the lightest neutralino χ 1 0 yielding a signal of two acollinear jets with missing transverse energy. We observe 3 events while we expect 3.5±1.2 events from the known standard model processes. We exclude at the 95% confidence level a significant region of the m t 1 - m χ 1 0 parameter space. The highest m t 1 value we exclude is 93 GeV/c 2 with a corresponding m χ 1 0 value of 8 GeV/c 2 .

Abstract: We have studied J ψ production in p p collisions at s = 1.8 TeV with the DO detector at Fermilab using μ+μ− data. We have measured the inclusive J ψ production cross section as a function of J ψ transverse momentum, pT. For the kinematic range pT > 8 GeV/c and |η| σ(p p → J ψ + X) · Br ( J ψ → μ + μ − ) = 2.08 ± 0.17( stat) ± 0.46(syst) nb. Using the muon impact parameter we have estimated the fraction of J ψ mesons coming from B meson decays to be fb = 0.35 ± 0.09(stat)±0.10(syst) and inferred the inclusive b production cross section. From the information on the event topology the fraction of nonisolated J ψ events has been measured to be fnonisol = 0.64 ± 0.08(stat)±0.06(syst). We have also obtained the fraction of J ψ events resulting from radiative decays of χc states, fχ = 0.32 ± 0.07(stat)±0.07(syst). We discuss the implications of our measurements for charmonium production processes.

Abstract: A study of the particle multiplicity between jets with large rapidity separation has been performed using the D\O\ detector at the Fermilab Tevatron $p\bar{p}$ Collider operating at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$\,TeV. A significant excess of low-multiplicity events is observed above the expectation for color-exchange processes. The measured fractional excess is $1.07 \pm 0.10({\rm stat})~{ + 0.25}_{- 0.13}({\rm syst})\%$, which is consistent with a strongly-interacting color-singlet (colorless) exchange process and cannot be explained by electroweak exchange alone. A lower limit of $0.80\%$ (95\% C.L.) is obtained on the fraction of dijet events with color-singlet exchange, independent of the rapidity gap survival probability.

Abstract: The ratio of the number of {ital W}+1 jet to {ital W}+0 jet events is measured with the D0 detector using data from the 1992--93 Tevatron Collider run. For the {ital W}{r_arrow}{ital e}{nu} channel with a minimum jet {ital E}{sub {ital T}} cutoff of 25 GeV, the experimental ratio is 0.065{plus_minus}0.003(stat){plus_minus}0.007(syst). Next-to-leading order QCD predictions for various parton distributions agree well with each other and are all over 1 standard deviation below the measurement. Varying the strong coupling constant {alpha}{sub {ital s}} in both the parton distributions and the partonic cross sections simultaneously does not remove this discrepancy. {copyright} {ital 1995} {ital The} {ital American} {ital Physical} {ital Society}.

Abstract: The distribution of the transverse energy in jets has been measured in p p collisions at s =1.8 TeV TeV using the DO detector at Fermilab. This measurement of the jet shape is made as a function of jet transverse energy in both the central and forward rapidity regions. Jets are shown to narrow both with increasing transverse energy and with increasing rapidity. Next-to-leading order partonic QCD calculations are compared to the data. Although the calculations qualitatively describe the data, they are shown to be very dependent on renormalization scale, parton clustering algorithm, and jet direction definition and they fail to describe the data in all regions consistently.

Abstract: A search for a heavy charged gauge boson, W′, using the decay channels W′ → eν and W′ → τν → eνν ν is reported. The data used in the analysis were collected by the DO experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron during the 1992-93 p p collider run from an integrated luminosity of 13.9 ± 0.8 pb−1 at s =1.8 TeV . Assuming that the neutrino from W′ decay is stable and has a mass significantly less than mW′, an upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on the cross section times branching ratio for p p → W′ → eν . A W′ with the same couplings to quarks and leptons as the standard model W boson is excluded for mW′
