1. Influence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on water storage capacity of two lichens species

Abstract

The wide variability in functional traits that enable the cosmopolitan distribution of lichens often includes the water storage capacity, S, of their thallus. Lichen S in forest canopies can be large enough to intercept and evaporate significant amounts of rainwater, contributing to the runoff-reduction ecosystem services provided by urban forests; however, S is likely influenced by the presence of air pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs) in urban areas. PAHs, being both chemically hydrophobic and damaging to lichen thalli, are expected to reduce lichens’ S and, thereby, limit their contribution to hydrologic ecoservices of urban forests. Hence, the relationship between PAH accumulation and rainwater uptake was examined for two lichen species, common in urban forests around the world – Platismatia glauca and Pseudevernia furfuracea. Samples were collected from an area of low air pollution and another area in a highly urbanized city centre with high air pollution exposure (Kraków, Poland). Lichen S was determined using laboratory-simulated rainfall. PAH bioaccumulation differed between species and among the samples from clean and polluted environments. After exposure to polluted air, the concentration of PAHs was higher in P. glauca than P. furfuracea. Samples from the non-urban setting, however, showed no differences between the two species. In the case of P. glauca, S decreased from 35.8% in samples from clean environment to 8.3% after six months of exposure in the urban setting. The respective S values for P. furfuracea were 25.4% and 12.4%. Results strongly suggest that PAH exposure reduces S in both lichen species.

Abstract

Forest ecosystems are one of the largest terrestrial carbon (C) reservoirs on Earth and an important sink of anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Abiotic and biotic disturbances such as windfalls, fires, outbreaks of insects or pests may negatively affect C storage in forest ecosystems decreasing their role as CO2 sink. The objective of this review was to summarize the current knowledge on the impact of large-scale forest ecosystem disturbances caused by windthrow and insect outbreaks on soil C stocks and cycles, and to gather information on the impact of restoration treatments performed in disturbed stands in the context of carbon accumulation in forest soils. Discussed were effects of windstorms and insect outbreaks as well as impacts of various approaches of forest regeneration after disturbance on C stocks and fluxes. Disturbances decrease C stocks in forest ecosystems and turn them from C sink into C source for a certain time. Regeneration of the disturbed forest restores its role as a CO2 sink. In montane forests artificial afforestation seems to shorten the time of achieving C parity. However, no data exists for lowland forests. Hence, there is an urgent need for studies that assess effect of windfalls and insect outbreaks on carbon storage in forests of lowland Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between the reclamation method (with topsoil and with bare rock), individual species, and land cover (woodland, grassland, and forbsland) on micro‐climate and retention properties, that is, volumetric water content (vwc) and water storage capacity (S). The large overburden dump "Sośnica" in Upper Silesia served as a research site, which makes it possible to investigate the planned experimental variants with relatively homogeneous properties of the deposited rock. The study uses statistical analysis and multilinear regressions to investigate the correlation between reclamation method, species, and land cover with parameters such as atmospheric temperature, relative humidity, vwc, soil temperature (st), and S. The experiments were carried out both in the field and in the laboratory. The results of this study indicate that the parameters related to retention properties were higher in the recultivated areas than in the areas left to natural succession. "S" was significantly higher in grassland and forbsland (15.67–16.52%) than in control plots where 10.23% was found, and in areas where an additional soil layer was applied (14.72%). Maximum vwc (22.17%) was on plots with topsoil than on bare rock (14.89%). Vwc were highest in the areas designated as grassland (28.54%), in comparison with woodlands and forblands (the control without vegetation cover had the worst thermal and retention properties). This study sheds light on the effects of reclamation method, species, and land cover on various parameters and helps to understand the importance of appropriate reclamation techniques for soil and water conservation. Further research on the impacts of reclamation techniques and land cover on micro‐climatic conditions in diverse post‐mining landscapes is crucial for developing globally applicable restoration strategies that promote ecological resilience. Abstract

Revegetation and plant cover establishment on coal mining heap areas are effective methods for reducing runoff and soil erosion. They are essential components for reestablishing ecosystems in ecologically vulnerable areas. Our study area covered the Upper Silesia coal region. The research focused on active and passive reclamation plots of the study area with different land covers, that is, woodland, grassland, forbland, and control plots. This study aimed to evaluate the spatial allotment of soil erosion in various reclamation techniques and land covers of a mining area using a combination of the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model, geographic information systems, and regression modeling with generalized additive models. We demonstrated that the combination of different data analysis methods can be used to accurately predict soil degradation, even if not all factors used in the RUSLE model are wall‐to‐wall available. However, only sheet and rill erosions can be predicted using this model. The results demonstrated the spread of soil erosion over the post‐coal mining heaps, varying from 0.03 Mg/ha/year to 583.47 Mg/ha/year. The highest soil erosion rate was observed at the control site (bare rock without vegetation). Approximately 62.6% of the region remained in the safe zone, whereas approximately 1.4% of the area was classified as a very severe zone for erosion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Mistletoes have a global distribution and are the largest group of parasitic plants living within the canopies of woody plants. In European forests, Viscum album L. ssp. album (common mistletoe) is a common sight and, despite being considered a pest, can play beneficial roles in the ecosystem. However, mistletoe infections are becoming more severe and widespread throughout Europe, including recent reports of large‐scale host tree mortality events. These mortality events are hypothesized to be a result of increased water stresses from severe mistletoe infections in tandem with drought. In this study, we estimate an additional water loss from mistletoe‐infected forests that has not yet been described: interception, or the storage and evaporation of rainfall. Results from rainfall simulations on mistletoes sampled from Gostynin Forest District (central Poland) indicate mistletoes can store 0.16–1.32 mm of rainwater. Inputting this additional water storage capacity from mistletoes into a rainfall interception model suggests that, depending on the severity of the infection, mistletoes could reduce annual rainwater supply beneath the canopy by 2–11%. In forests experiencing water stress from mistletoe infection and climate change, the rainfall interception by mistletoes represents an additional water loss of a magnitude worthy of future investigation. Abstract

Many activities are conducted with the view of reducing CO2 emission from fossil fuels, but mining extraction will continue to be important for energy sources, mineral and metal ores, and the general economy. This activity has negative environmental consequences such as habitat loss, water scarcity, and soil degradation in novel ecosystems. Additionally, climate change, drought, and desertification accelerate important problems with water retention. From one point of view, identifying and conserving critical regions for ecological sustainability are issues of fundamental importance, but on the other hand, post-mine sites could provide additional carbon sinks and improve regional water retention (WR). This review paper analyses different studies focusing on the impact of the reclamation of mining sites on the water retention properties of soil. Water retention in reclaimed mining soil (RMS) increased considerably after various restoration efforts were implemented. The amount of water holding capacity in RMS was mostly affected by reclamation methods, soil properties, soil biota, restoration duration, and vegetation type. The major conclusions from the analysis were that (i) the bulk density of reclaimed mining soil ranges from 1.35 to 1.50 g/cm3 and decreases with restoration duration; (ii) Soil fauna increases soil water storage capacity and plant litter and earthworms convert litter to fecal pellets, which increases water field capacity; and (iii) water holding capacity increases with duration of reclaimed sites and type of plants, i.e., afforestation and tree communities have higher WR than younger grasslands. Therefore, identification of the suitable reclamation method, restoration duration, vegetation type, and soil fauna are important factors for increasing water retention capacity at a regional scale. Abstract

The canopy water storage capacity (S) is an important parameter for the hydrological cycle in forests. One factor which influences the S is leaf texture, which in turn is thought to be affected by the contents of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In order to improve our understanding of S we simulated rainfall and measured the S of coniferous species growing under various conditions. The contents of 18 PAHs were measured in the needles. The species chosen were: Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L), Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst) and silver fir (Abies Alba Mill.). Sample branches were collected in 3 locations: A - forest; B - housing estate; C - city center. We found that PAHs have a significant impact on the S of tree crowns. The increase in the total content of all of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (SUM.PAH) translates into an increase of S for all species. The S is the highest for the P. abies species, followed by P. sylvestris and A. alba at all locations. Within the same species, an increase in the value of S is associated with an increase in the PAH content in needles measured by gas chromatography. For A.alba, the average S increased from 11.54% of the total amount of simulated rain (ml g−1) at location A, to 17.10% at location B, and 21.02% at location C. Similarly for P. abies the S was 21.78%, 29.06% and 34.36% at locations A, B and C respectively. The study extends the knowledge of the mechanisms of plant surface adhesion and the anthropogenic factors that may modify this process as well as foliage properties.

Abstract

Interception is the amount of water held on the canopy at the end of a rainfall event. Rainfall interception and contact angle of raindrops on the surface of plants has a significant meaning in ecohydrology. Leaves are the plant organs in which during development, changes in the composition of the epicuticular wax can be observed. These differences can be explained by phenological changes. In the present study, there was a hypothesis that seasonal phenological changes of leaf surface can highly affect the amount of rainwater retained by plants (interception) and the angle of contact between the droplets and leaf’s surface. This above-mentioned hypothesis was assessed based on the designed measurement series, combining: 1) direct leaves spraying in various stages of growth with water at a constant temperature 2) images obtained by scanning electron microscope (SEM) to analyse changes in the structure of the epicuticular wax 3) photographic methods, images acquired in the light box 4) measurement and analysis of the angle of contact by using simulated raindrops. The leaves of Fagus sylvatica L. were analysed. Samples were taken in the Niepołomice Forest District (southern Poland) from well-developed crown trees. The result of the experiments conducted makes a database of changes in wettability of raindrops on beech leaves throughout the whole vegetative season. The internal slope of drops ranged from 110°–150° in April up to 20°–40° at the beginning of November. Based on the obtained results, we can classify the degrees of leaf wettability and interception under the influence of morphological changes occurring during the vegetative season.

Abstract

The study presents plant interception understood as a process of retaining rainfall over the entire surface of the plant. The objective was to collect and prepare data presenting changes in the amount of rainwater reaching the forest floor, and to inference on the diversity of water capacity within canopy of a single tree. A characteristic feature of an interceptive tank is the lack of tightness, which provides the possibility for the determination of horizontal distribution of water that reaches the forest floor. The amount of throughfall depends on direct rainfall and humidity, while its spatial distribution depends on the structure and species composition, the shape of crowns, the degree of compaction of foliage in the crowns and the distance from the tree trunk. Increase in rainfall was reported at specified time points, which, in combination with the distribution of rain gauges in the square grid, provided spatio−temporal image describing changes of water capacity of the treetops. Single tree and biogroups influence the specific mosaic of soil properties that change even on a small scale. This kind of interaction is somewhat important for the stand regeneration. The studies were carried out in Węgierska Górka Forest District (southern Poland). Changes in the amount of rainwater reaching the forest floor after successive time points during 47 individual rainfall events were controlled. Spatio−temporal distribution of rainfall was related to the distance from the trunk, but primarily to the construction of the treetop. As a result, the graphic interpolation of spatial data describing the amount of water retained in the treetop after a single rainfall was provided. The distance from the trunk, the branch system and construction of the treetop significantly affected the amount of water reaching the forest floor. The morphology of the treetop and root system, as well as the characteristics of beech trunk are causes, and simultaneously, consequences of penetration of rainfall into the forest floor that is characteristic for this species. Abstract

The EU Water Framework Directive aims to ensure restoration of Europe’s water bodies to “good ecological status” by 2027. Many Member States will struggle to meet this target, with around half of EU river catchments currently reporting below standard water quality. Diffuse pollution from agriculture represents a major pressure, affecting over 90% of river basins. Accumulating evidence shows that recent improvements to agricultural practices are benefiting water quality but in many cases will be insufficient to achieve WFD objectives. There is growing support for land use change to help bridge the gap, with a particular focus on targeted tree planting to intercept and reduce the delivery of diffuse pollutants to water. This form of integrated catchment management offers multiple benefits to society but a significant cost to landowners and managers. New economic instruments, in combination with spatial targeting, need to be developed to ensure cost effective solutions – including tree planting for water benefits - are realised. Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) are flexible, incentive-based mechanisms that could play an important role in promoting land use change to deliver water quality targets. The PESFOR-W COST Action will consolidate learning from existing woodlands for water PES schemes in Europe and help standardize approaches to evaluating the environmental effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of woodland measures.
