Abstract Background The resilience of democracy is tested under exogenous shocks such as crises. The COVID-19 pandemic has recently tested the resilience of democratic institutions and practices around the world. Aim The purpose of this article is to scope the early research literature that discusses democracy and the COVID-19 pandemic. We review scientific journal articles published during the first two years of the pandemic. We ask three research questions in scoping this body of literature: (1) what are the key topic areas of all published research that associates itself with both democracy and COVID-19, (2) what kinds of conceptual and theoretical contributions has research literature that more specifically discusses democracy under the pandemic produced, and (3) what are the impacts of democracy to the pandemic and vice versa according to empirical research? Methods The scoping review methodology draws on systematic literature search strategies, computational methods, and manual coding. The systematic Web of Science search produced 586 articles for which we conducted a Correlated Topic Model. After technical and manual screening, we identified 94 journal articles that were manually coded. Results The early research on democracy and the COVID-19 pandemic offers a versatile body of scholarship. The topic modeling shows that the scholarship discusses issues of crises, governance, rights, society, epidemiology, politics, electorate, technology, and media. The body of papers with conceptual and theoretical contributions has offered new insights on the difficulties, possibilities, and means to maintain democracy under a pandemic. Empirical research on democracy’s impact on the COVID-19 pandemic and vice versa varies in terms of methodology, geographical scope, and scientific contributions according to the direction of influence studied. Democracy appears to have a significant impact on some aspects of policy responses and epidemiological characteristics of the pandemic. In most parts of the world, the scope, franchise, and authenticity of democracy narrowed down due to the pandemic, albeit in most cases only temporarily. Conclusions A significant number of papers show that the pandemic has accentuated democratic backsliding but is unlikely to have undermined established democracies that have proved resilient in face of the pandemic. But empirical research has also made visible some weak signals of antidemocratic tendencies that may become more accentuated in the longer run.

Crossovers in meiosis have an important role in sexual reproduction in ensuring the segregation of chromosomes and shuffling of genetic material. Despite their profound importance, little is known about heritability and repeatability of the crossover rate in the wild. We studied crossover rate variation in outbred nine- (Pungitius pungitius) and three-spined (Gasterosteus aculeatus) stickleback populations to estimate its heritability (h 2) and repeatability (R). Based on crossover rate interpreted from parent–F1-offspring linkage maps created from single nucleotide polymorphism data, the repeatability of crossover rate was moderate at best, but higher in females (R = 0.24 and R = 0.33) than in males (R = 0.017 and R = 0.11) in both species. Owing to the low degree and variance of parental relatedness and low sample sizes, heritabilities could not be estimated with confidence. However, given that R sets the upper limit to h 2, the heritability of crossover rate is indicated to be low in males. A review and comparison with the previously reported repeatability and heritability estimates revealed that the repeatabilities in stickleback females were relatively high, whereas those in males were very low. Area regeneration of deprived neighborhoods is being used to reduce health inequality, socioeconomic deprivation and ethnic segregation. This quasi-experimental study examines if long-term graded exposure to urban regeneration is associated with primary healthcare-seeking behavior among residents. We compared general practitioner (GP) contacts from 2015-2020 in two adjacent, deprived social housing areas, one exposed to area regeneration. Populations were into Western and non-Western males and females aged 15 years and older (N = 3,960). Mean annual GP contact frequency for each group were estimated and a difference-in-difference (DiD) analysis was conducted with adjustments for propensity scores based on baseline characteristics. GP contact frequency increased for all groups across time with a systematically higher level and faster increase in the control groups. In particular, the mean difference between the exposed and control area for Western women increased from −4.67 to −5.76 annual contacts across the period. The mean differences in contact frequency increased for all groups but results of the DiD analyses were insignificant. In conclusion, an increasing gap in GP contact frequency, with the highest levels in the control area, was observed for all comparisons across time. New technologies are needed to put on the market ever accelerated schedule in order to design and fabricate devices that fulfill consumers' expectations. An industry-academy collaborative working mode is very efficient way to accelerate and diversify progression of novel technological solutions, educate new multidisciplinary professionals, and to act the function of new business incubation. This type of long-term research activity strengthens the position of research groups from small countries in an international competition.

A surface-impedance boundary condition (SIBC) is presented for an unconditionally stable alternating-direction implicit (ADI) finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The conformal SIBC formulation based on locally conformal grids is capable of modeling the conductor loss of arbitrarily-shaped lossy metal structures. The work is described in the framework of the finite-integration technique (FIT) formulation of the ADI-FDTD. The paper focuses on the proposed ADI-FDTD SIBC formulation and its extensive validation. For this purpose, cylindrical and spherical cavity resonators are used for numerical tests. The quality factor Q is directly proportional to wall loss and is particularly sensitive to the accuracy of loss calculation. The resonator structure consists only of a vacuum-filled metal cavity and is thus free of additional sources of error that are caused by other extensions to the basic ADI-FDTD algorithm. The formulation is validated by comparison with analytic results and numerical data calculated using CST Microwave Studio (MWS). The convergence rate of the results is of second order, i.e. the error reduces to one quarter as the mesh resolution is doubled. A conformal first-order or Leontovic surface-impedance boundary condition (SIBC) for the modeling of lossy curved surfaces in a Cartesian grid is presented for the finite-integration technique (FIT). Equivalently, the model can be derived using the contour-path formulation of the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method. The SIBC is based on a lumped-element representation of the impedance combined with a conformal modeling scheme. The validity of the proposed model is evaluated by investigating the quality factors of rectangular, cylindrical and spherical cavity resonators. The convergence rate of the conformal SIBC model is shown to be of second order. Index Terms--Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods, losses, resonators.

The von Neumann analysis is applied to investigate the stability of a source connected on a wire described by a thin-wire model. Both a soft source and a resistive voltage source (RVS) are shown to limit the stable range of values for wire radius or time step. Using the yon Neumann analysis, a stable RVS model for thin wires is developed. The proposed model is verified by comparison with a hard source, an original RVS and NEC-generated reference data. The stabilized RVS introduces no additional stability constraints on those of the wire model while maintaining fast decay of incident fields of the original RVS model. In this study, polymeric silver inks, paper substrates, and screen printing were used to produce prototype Bow-Tie tags. Because of increasing interest in applying passive UHF-RFID systems in paper industry, the Bow-Tie antenna used in this study was designed to work through paper. The maximum reliable read ranges of the tags were measured thorough stacked paper and also in air. The analysis and functioning of the antenna design are also discussed. All inks and paper substrates were suitable as antenna material and the prototype tag antennas had good reading performance. The maximum reliable read ranges were quite the same as for copper and aluminum tags studied elsewhere. This means that printed UHF tags are competitive solutions for the identification of simple mass products.

An improved thin-wire model for the finite-difference time-domain method is proposed. The new model can be used to accurately model straight wire sections connected to other metal structures. In addition, the model includes the effect of charge accumulation at wire end caps. The end-cap model is based on conservation of charge and Coulomb's law. Using the end-cap model, unconnected wires such as wire antennas are also accurately modeled. The results indicate a significant improvement in predicting the resonance frequency of a dipole antenna.
