Background. Skin disorders are commonly seen in neonatal period. Some of these are suggested as physiologic but some have prognostic implications. AIM: In this study we aimed to find out skin disorders of the newborns in the first four weeks of life. Methods. The detailed dermatological examination of 553 consecutive newborns were done. The birthweight, gestational age and route of delivery, systemic disease diagnosed by pediatrician were recorded. A questionaire was filled with mothers in a face to face interview about, relationship degree between parents, drugs if mother used during pregnancy, systemic illnesses of the family members, smoking habit of the mother during pregnancy. Results. 287 (%51.8) were male, 266 (%48.2) were female. 492 (%88.96) were born in full-term, 39 (%7.5) pre-term, 22 (%3.9) post-term. 288 (%52.07) were born by normal delivery while the rest were born by cesarean section. 49 (%47.92) of them were diagnosed at least one systemic disorder by the pediatricians. The mean age of the mothers was 27.9±5.68. The 148 (%26.76) of the mothers have used drugs other than iron and multivitamin pills. The 72 of the mothers (%13.01) have smoked during pregnancy. The 64 (%11.57) of the parents have first relationship degree. We found 28 dermatological disorders (after excluding the physiological skin findings) were found from the cohort (%22.6). The most seen dermatological disorders were xerosis (%14.82), diaper dermatitis (%2.53), congenital melanocytic nevi ( %2.16), ambiguous genitalia (%1.8), seborheic dermatitis (%1.8), hemangioma (%1.8), accessory nipple (%1.8). Conclusion. We found 28 dermatologic disorder after excluding physiologic skin changes in %22.6 of the newborns in the study. Xerosis was the most frequent skin disorder. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Although chronic pruritus (CP) is one of the most frequent symptoms seen in dermatology outpatients, the characteristics of CP have not been thoroughly examined. Our aim was to determine the point prevalence of CP in patients attending a dermatology outpatient clinic and to examine its sociodemographic and clinical characteristics., Methods: Patients attending our dermatology outpatient clinic were prospectively enrolled in the study. Sociodemographic data and dermatological diagnoses were recorded. A questionnaire providing information about pruritus was answered by patients with CP. Data were evaluated statistically., Results: The data of 1428 patients (46% male, 54% female, age range 18-94, mean age 40.52±17.4) were evaluated, and the point prevalence of CP was found to be 30.9%. When patients with and without CP were compared, statistically significant results were obtained regarding age, education level, and occupational status (P<0.05). The mean severity measured by VAS was 6.7±2.1. Pruritus severity was not associated with sociodemographic factors. The most affected areas were extremities; 10% of the CP patients had generalized pruritus. Skin diseases were the most frequent cause of CP., Conclusions: Nearly one-third of patients admitted to our dermatology outpatient clinic had CP. It seems a significant rate when all dermatology outpatient population is considered. Age, education level, and occupational status were found to be factors affecting the prevalence. Since CP may cause serious discomfort and decrease quality of life, it should be considered as a significant pathology. Therefore, CP and related disorders should be evaluated thoroughly and treated appropriately by clinicians.

Objective: There are limited reports studying on congenital cutaneous anomalies in newborns, particularly in Turkey. Some of congenital cutaneous anomalies serve as an important clue for accompanying syndromes or other medical conditions. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of congenital cutaneous anomalies in newborns and to discuss their clinical significance with a brief review of literature., Study Design: A total of 1,000 newborns were examined by a dermatologist in a hospital-based, cross-sectional, prospective study between October 2011 and April 2012., Results: We observed 11 different congenital cutaneous anomalies in 48 newborns of 1,000 (4.8%). The most commonly seen anomalies were sacral dimple, accessory nipple, acrochordon, hypospadias, open spinal dysraphism, and accessory tragus. None of the newborns with cutaneous anomalies had any association., Conclusions: Although congenital cutaneous anomalies are rare in newborns, clinicians should be aware of them as they may be in association with syndromes and other medical conditions. Objective: To determine infant diaper dermatitis (DD) at pediatrics health center; its relation to socio-demographic factors and infant care., Methods: The study included 113 infants aged 0-24 mo. Data on infants' age, sex, weight, mothers' education, nutrition, diaper change frequency, cleaning methods and prophylactic cream use were recorded. Infants with minimum one time rash, were accepted to have DD., Results: Seventy six (67.3 %) infants had DD [32 girls (42.1 %), 44 boys (57 %), mean age: 6.5 mo]. Infants with DD had significantly higher age than those without (p 0.001). DD frequency in infants ≥4.5 mo-old was 5.8(2.4-13.7) times more than in infants ≤4.5 mo. Cleaning material types did not affect DD frequency. No significant difference was observed in DD with diaper change of ≤3 times and ≥4 times. Significant difference in DD increase was observed with supplementary food intake vs. without it (p 0.000). DD frequency in infants with supplementary food intake was 6.4 times (2.4-17.1) more than in those without it. Human milk intake was statistically significant in causing less occurrence of DD as shown in univariate model (p < 0.05). Rash incidence was significantly lower with cream use compared to without its use (p < 0.001). DD prevalence was decreased 0.203 (0.087-0.477) times by cream usage., Conclusions: Age, supplementary food intake and lack of cream use seem to be accountable for DD whereas human milk intake lessened the occurrence of DD. Mothers should be informed on dermatitis care and encouraged for breastfeeding.

Background: Non-melanocytic skin tumors are rarely seen in pediatric patients; although they are mostly benign, they remain to be elucidated by histopathological examination. The objective of the study was to describe the epidemiology of non-melanocytic skin tumors in children attending to our dermatology department., Method: The histopathologic studies of all skin punch and excisional biopsies of children up to 16 years old referred to our dermatology department between January 2007 and January 2012 were reviewed retrospectively. Melanocytic tumors and cystic and infectious lesions were excluded. Age, sex, location, and histopathologic diagnosis were recorded. The skin tumors were categorized., Results: A total of 4,126 skin tumors were analyzed histopathologically, and 203 of the lesions were from children up to 16 years of age. Ninety-seven of the lesions from 91 patients were non-melanocytic skin tumors. Forty-seven (51.64%) were male, 44 (48.36%) were female, and mean age was 10.55 ± 4.31 years. Malignant tumor was 1.03% (one tumor) and benign tumors were 98.97% (96 tumors) of all. The most frequent non-melanocytic skin tumor was pilomatricoma with 22 lesions (22.68%), followed by pyogenic granuloma with 18 lesions (18.54%), and nevus sebaceous with 10 (10.3%) lesions. Cutaneous leukemic infiltrate was found to be the only malignant skin tumor in the study group. The most frequently affected age group was children aged > 13 to ≤ 16 years, which included 38 patients (41.7%). The majority of lesions were on head and scalp (32 tumors, 32.96%), followed by trunk (28 tumors, 28.84%) and upper limbs (22 tumors, 22.75%)., Conclusion: The ratio of malignant to benign skin tumors in pediatric patients is found to be small. Pilomatricoma, pyogenic granuloma and nevus sebaceous are found to be the most frequent non-melanocytic skin tumors of children. The ratio of malignant tumors is very rare.

Active sensitization to paraphenylendiamine (PPD) and related compounds from temporary black henna tattoos has become an epidemic in the recent years. Hair dyes also include PPD like black henna tatoos which cause allergic contact dermatitis. Skin lesions of allergic contact dermatitis from PPD are mostly seen as an exudative erythema, an erythema multiforme-like eruption or a bullous contact dermatitis. We, herein, report a 27 year-old woman with an angioedema-like reaction occurring after the first exposure to hair dye who was unaware of being previously sensitized to PPD from black henna tattoo.
