1. ELLMA-T: an Embodied LLM-agent for Supporting English Language Learning in Social VR

Abstract

Many people struggle with learning a new language, with traditional tools falling short in providing contextualized learning tailored to each learner's needs. The recent development of large language models (LLMs) and embodied conversational agents (ECAs) in social virtual reality (VR) provide new opportunities to practice language learning in a contextualized and naturalistic way that takes into account the learner's language level and needs. To explore this opportunity, we developed ELLMA-T, an ECA that leverages an LLM (GPT-4) and situated learning framework for supporting learning English language in social VR (VRChat). Drawing on qualitative interviews (N=12), we reveal the potential of ELLMA-T to generate realistic, believable and context-specific role plays for agent-learner interaction in VR, and LLM's capability to provide initial language assessment and continuous feedback to learners. 2. Using GPT-4 to guide causal machine learning

Abstract

Since its introduction to the public, ChatGPT has had an unprecedented impact. While some experts praised AI advancements and highlighted their potential risks, others have been critical about the accuracy and usefulness of Large Language Models (LLMs). In this paper, we are interested in the ability of LLMs to identify causal relationships. We focus on the well-established GPT-4 (Turbo) and evaluate its performance under the most restrictive conditions, by isolating its ability to infer causal relationships based solely on the variable labels without being given any context, demonstrating the minimum level of effectiveness one can expect when it is provided with label-only information. We show that questionnaire participants judge the GPT-4 graphs as the most accurate in the evaluated categories, closely followed by knowledge graphs constructed by domain experts, with causal Machine Learning (ML) far behind. We use these results to highlight the important limitation of causal ML, which often produces causal graphs that violate common sense, affecting trust in them. However, we show that pairing GPT-4 with causal ML overcomes this limitation, resulting in graphical structures learnt from real data that align more closely with those identified by domain experts, compared to structures learnt by causal ML alone. Overall, our findings suggest that despite GPT-4 not being explicitly designed to reason causally, it can still be a valuable tool for causal representation, as it improves the causal discovery process of causal ML algorithms that are designed to do just that.

3. Investigating potential causes of Sepsis with Bayesian network structure learning

Abstract

Sepsis is a life-threatening and serious global health issue. This study combines knowledge with available hospital data to investigate the potential causes of Sepsis that can be affected by policy decisions. We investigate the underlying causal structure of this problem by combining clinical expertise with score-based, constraint-based, and hybrid structure learning algorithms. A novel approach to model averaging and knowledge-based constraints was implemented to arrive at a consensus structure for causal inference. The structure learning process highlighted the importance of exploring data-driven approaches alongside clinical expertise. This includes discovering unexpected, although reasonable, relationships from a clinical perspective. Hypothetical interventions on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Alcohol dependence, and Diabetes suggest that the presence of any of these risk factors in patients increases the likelihood of Sepsis. This finding, alongside measuring the effect of these risk factors on Sepsis, has potential policy implications. Recognising the importance of prediction in improving Sepsis related health outcomes, the model built is also assessed in its ability to predict Sepsis. The predictions generated by the consensus model were assessed for their accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. These three indicators all had results around 70%, and the AUC was 80%, which means the causal structure of the model is reasonably accurate given that the models were trained on data available for commissioning purposes only.

4. Edge-length preserving embeddings of graphs between normed spaces

Abstract

The concept of graph flattenability, initially formalized by Belk and Connelly and later expanded by Sitharam and Willoughby, extends the question of embedding finite metric spaces into a given normed space. A finite simple graph $G=(V,E)$ is said to be $(X,Y)$-flattenable if any set of induced edge lengths from an embedding of $G$ into a normed space $Y$ can also be realised by an embedding of $G$ into a normed space $X$. This property, being minor-closed, can be characterized by a finite list of forbidden minors. Following the establishment of fundamental results about $(X,Y)$-flattenability, we identify sufficient conditions under which it implies independence with respect to the associated rigidity matroids for $X$ and $Y$. We show that the spaces $\ell_2$ and $\ell_\infty$ serve as two natural extreme spaces of flattenability and discuss $(X, \ell_p )$-flattenability for varying $p$. We provide a complete characterization of $(X,Y)$-flattenable graphs for the specific case when $X$ is 2-dimensional and $Y$ is infinite-dimensional., Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Portability is critical to ensuring high productivity in developing and maintaining scientific software as the diversity in on-node hardware architectures increases. While several programming models provide portability for diverse GPU platforms, they don't make any guarantees about performance portability. In this work, we explore several programming models -- CUDA, HIP, Kokkos, RAJA, OpenMP, OpenACC, and SYCL, to study if the performance of these models is consistently good across NVIDIA and AMD GPUs. We use five proxy applications from different scientific domains, create implementations where missing, and use them to present a comprehensive comparative evaluation of the programming models. We provide a Spack scripting-based methodology to ensure reproducibility of experiments conducted in this work. Abstract

Recently, we saw a trend toward using physiological signals in interactive systems. These signals, offering deep insights into users' internal states and health, herald a new era for HCI. However, as this is an interdisciplinary approach, many challenges arise for HCI researchers, such as merging diverse disciplines, from understanding physiological functions to design expertise. Also, isolated research endeavors limit the scope and reach of findings. This workshop aims to bridge these gaps, fostering cross-disciplinary discussions on usability, open science, and ethics tied to physiological data in HCI. In this workshop, we will discuss best practices for embedding physiological signals in interactive systems. Through collective efforts, we seek to craft a guiding document for best practices in physiological HCI research, ensuring that it remains grounded in shared principles and methodologies as the field advances.

9. Exploring Challenges and Supports for Writing in Standard Australian English for Australian Secondary English as an Additional Language/Dialect Students: A Scoping Study

Abstract

The overall purpose of this study was to explore the identified language challenges and supports for writing in Standard Australian English for secondary English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) students. An initial review of the academic literature revealed that this research topic has not been extensively researched in the Australian context. For this reason, this research project involved a systematic scoping study of the academic literature, based on the framework of Arksey and O'Malley (2005) to determine findings to date. The 35 articles examined revealed a range of themes that either challenged or supported the writing process for Australian EAL/D secondary students. Key challenges that EALD learners in secondary contexts face when developing Standard Australian English (SAE) writing skills revolve around policy mandates from curriculum and assessment authorities, de-facto policy as realised through EAL and mainstream curriculum, teachers' attitudes, knowledge and beliefs, including notions of deficit, and pre-service teacher preparation. What was found to support EAL/D students were different pedagogical approaches which are cognizant of students' cultural knowledge, experiences and linguistic resources, as well as genre-based approaches incorporating Systemic Functional Linguistics and a teaching and learning cycle and technology. Given that some of the studies were relatively small which impacts generalizability, further research in relation to the topics under study would be encouraged, particularly as to what supports a wider range of EAL/D students.

Abstract

In this article, we provide perspectives for atomtronics circuits on quantum technology platforms beyond simple bosonic or fermionic cold atom matter-wave currents. Specifically, we consider (i) matter-wave schemes with multi-component quantum fluids; (ii) networks of Rydberg atoms that provide a radically new concept of atomtronics circuits in which the flow, rather than in terms of matter, occurs through excitations; (iii) hybrid matter-wave circuits - cavities systems that can be used to study atomtronic circuits beyond the standard solutions and provide new schemes for integrated matter-wave networks. We also sketch how driving these systems can open new pathways for atomtronics.

Abstract

Networks of Rydberg atoms provide a powerful basis for quantum simulators and quantum technologies. Inspired by matter-wave atomtronics, here we engineer switches, diodes and universal logic gates. Our schemes control the Rydberg excitation dynamics via the anti-blockade or facilitation mechanism, allowing for much faster devices compared to cold atom systems. Our approach is robust to noise and can be applied to individually trapped atoms and extensive three-dimensional gases. In analogy to electronics, Rydberg atomtronic devices promise to enhance quantum information processors and quantum simulators.

14. Causal discovery using dynamically requested knowledge

Abstract

Causal Bayesian Networks (CBNs) are an important tool for reasoning under uncertainty in complex real-world systems. Determining the graphical structure of a CBN remains a key challenge and is undertaken either by eliciting it from humans, using machine learning to learn it from data, or using a combination of these two approaches. In the latter case, human knowledge is generally provided to the algorithm before it starts, but here we investigate a novel approach where the structure learning algorithm itself dynamically identifies and requests knowledge for relationships that the algorithm identifies as uncertain during structure learning. We integrate this approach into the Tabu structure learning algorithm and show that it offers considerable gains in structural accuracy, which are generally larger than those offered by existing approaches for integrating knowledge. We suggest that a variant which requests only arc orientation information may be particularly useful where the practitioner has little preexisting knowledge of the causal relationships. As well as offering improved accuracy, the approach can use human expertise more effectively and contributes to making the structure learning process more transparent.

We show that minimally 3-rigid block-and-hole graphs, with one block or one hole, are characterised as those which are constructible from $K_3$ by vertex splitting, and also, as those having associated looped face graphs which are $(3,0)$-tight. This latter property can be verified in polynomial time by a form of pebble game algorithm. Abstract

Abstract Background Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to poor muscle function, cartilage degeneration, and the development of knee osteoarthritis. However, the impact of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] level on quadriceps muscle strength remains inconclusive, largely due to variations in study designs, differences in study populations, and the influence of confounding factors such as co-supplementation with other vitamins. The existing literature presents mixed findings, highlighting the need for a comprehensive evaluation of the available evidence. Purpose This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to summarise. Study design Systematic review; Level of evidence, 4. Methods Searches were conducted using Medline (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), CINAHL (EBSCOhost), and SPORTDiscus (EBSCOhost), which aimed to summarise recent (published after 2000 and before March 1st, 2024) studies reporting the effects of serum 25(OH)D levels on quadriceps strength. Appraisal tool for Cross-Sectional Studies (AXIS) for cross-sectional studies and Quality in Prognosis Studies (QUIPS) for longitudinal studies. Results from the AXIS and QUIPS tools were used for GRADE quality assessment. The review was carried out using PRIMSA guidelines and registered in PROSPERO (ID: CRD42022313240). Results Four hundred studies were screened and 28 studies with 5752 participants were included. 28 published studies (24 cross-sectional and 4 longitudinal) were identified. Key results supported the significant positive correlation between serum 25(OH)D levels and isokinetic quadriceps strength at 180°/s in elderly and athletic populations with a correlation coefficient of 0.245 (95%CI: 0.078–0.398, p = 0.004). However, no significant correlation was found with isometric quadriceps strength or isokinetic strength at 60°/s (r = 0.190, p = 0.085). There was only a weak negative correlation with MVC. Conclusion This review found a statistically significant positive correlation between serum 25(OH)D levels and isokinetic quadriceps strength. This has important clinical implications, especially in the elderly cohort, with higher 25(OH)D levels being associated with a reduced incidence of falls and fragility fractures.

17. Writing Retreats as Spaces to Create Indigenous Postgraduate Research Communities of Practice

Abstract

Publish or perish is the cautionary aphorism reminding academics to produce academic work for career longevity. For communities historically excluded from tertiary institutions, this aphorism can also signify a responsibility to ensure their voices are heard. Tertiary institutions recognise the importance of fostering productive writing opportunities; and writing retreats are a valuable approach. This article demonstrates the importance of writing retreats from the perspective of Indigenous postgraduate scholars in Australia. Two writing retreats were held off-campus in 2018-2019. To identify the impact of the writing retreats, we (the participants in the retreat) used an active participatory approach to explore our experiences using data collected from Yarning circles and written critical self-reflections. We identified three key themes: (1) writing retreats as supportive spaces for academic writing, (2) the development of an ongoing community of practice and (3) the importance of managing cultural risk in Indigenous programs. The findings demonstrate the importance of providing culturally grounded opportunities that support Indigenous scholarship.

25. Rigid graphs in cylindrical normed spaces

Abstract

We characterise rigid graphs for cylindrical normed spaces $Z=X\oplus_\infty \mathbb{R}$ where $X$ is a finite dimensional real normed linear space and $Z$ is endowed with the product norm. In particular, we obtain purely combinatorial characterisations of minimal rigidity for a large class of 3-dimensional cylindrical normed spaces; for example, when $X$ is an $\ell_p$-plane with $p\in (1,\infty)$. We combine these results with recent work of Cros et al. to characterise rigid graphs in the 4-dimensional cylindrical space $(\mathbb{R}^2\oplus_1\mathbb{R})\oplus_\infty\mathbb{R}$. These are among the first combinatorial characterisations of rigid graphs in normed spaces of dimension greater than 2. Abstract

Causal machine learning (ML) algorithms recover graphical structures that tell us something about cause-and-effect relationships. The causal representation praovided by these algorithms enables transparency and explainability, which is necessary for decision making in critical real-world problems. Yet, causal ML has had limited impact in practice compared to associational ML. This paper investigates the challenges of causal ML with application to COVID-19 UK pandemic data. We collate data from various public sources and investigate what the various structure learning algorithms learn from these data. We explore the impact of different data formats on algorithms spanning different classes of learning, and assess the results produced by each algorithm, and groups of algorithms, in terms of graphical structure, model dimensionality, sensitivity analysis, confounding variables, predictive and interventional inference. We use these results to highlight open problems in causal structure learning and directions for future research. To facilitate future work, we make all graphs, models, data sets, and source code publicly available online.

Abstract

Abstract Urban landscapes play a crucial role in the health of freshwater ecosystems. The task of protecting and restoring urban freshwater waterways requires concerted efforts from all sectors of society, including volunteers. The recruitment and retention of volunteers is often a challenge for community environmental organizations as urban residents are diverse and influenced by a blend of personal, societal, and environmental factors. We surveyed a representative sample of 1901 urban residents across Aotearoa New Zealand and used the Behaviour Change Wheel framework and audience segmentation to understand the underlying factors influencing volunteering for waterway restoration projects and to identify potential target audiences to recruit new volunteers. We identified four segments within the target audience (“Supportive,” “Receptive but unsure,” “Hesitant and lack opportunity,” and “Reluctant”) each with its own unique profile of capabilities, opportunities, and motivations for volunteering. Recommendations for appropriate intervention designs to increase levels of volunteering include providing tailored messaging and events for those who are “Receptive but unsure” or “Hesitant and lack opportunity” and information about volunteering opportunities to “Supportive” individuals. This knowledge lays the groundwork for future initiatives focused on increasing urbanites' volunteering with community freshwater restoration groups.

Abstract

Progressive encephalomyelitis with rigidity and myoclonus (PERM) is a rare but debilitating disease within the stiff person syndrome (SPS) spectrum characterised by muscle rigidity, spasms, myoclonus, dysautonomia, and brainstem dysfunction. The exact pathogenetic mechanism is unclear, although there is an association with the presence of glycine receptor antibodies in serum and cerebrospinal fluid, and some cases are paraneoplastic. Here, we report a case of paraneoplastic, glycine receptor antibody-positive PERM associated with an otherwise subclinical monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis (MBL) of the non-CLL phenotype, which may be, in turn, likely secondary to long-term methotrexate use [i.e., methotrexate-associated lymphoproliferative disorder (MTX-LPD)] or an underlying autoimmune disease. Treatment with multiple lines of initial induction immunomodulatory therapies, followed by maintenance rituximab, achieved long-term remission of the neurologic, haematological, and rheumatologic disease. This is, to our knowledge, the first reported association between PERM and MBL, or between PERM and MTX-LPD.

36. Investigating the Feasibility of Virtual Reality for Emotion Regulation with Youth

Abstract

The ability to regulate and cope with strong emotions is essential for maintaining our mental health and well-being. However, learning how to emotionally regulate can be a bit of a mystery since it is largely an invisible process and it can be difficult to conjure up strong emotions to practice regulating them. This is where virtual reality (or VR) comes in. VR is a computer-generated 3D environment where the user experiences a simulated world through 360 visuals, stereo audio, and 3D interaction with tracking sensors. VR is a very visceral experience that feels 'real' even though you know it isn't. If a virtual ball came flying at your head, you would duck! My past research shows that we can provide VR experiences that elicit strong emotional reactions so that people can practice coping and regulating their emotional responses. For example, I helped create a VR experience of being in nature and then going into space to see the Earth; it created the emotional reaction of awe and wonder that led to a deeper connection with our planet. This shows that emotional VR experiences can impact our emotions and behaviour both in VR and beyond. My research proposal is to investigate the feasibility of emotion regulation skills development in VR with teenagers. The idea is to simulate emotional experiences (like the 1st day of high school) as a means to develop emotion regulation skills so that they will be able to better cope with their emotions. I will lead the design, development, and evaluation of this VR experience and work directly with youth to meet their needs. This proof of concept prototype is the first step in developing a VR platform that provides youth with an effective way to regulate their emotions and improve their mental health from their own homes, which will lead to improvements in education, socio-emotional, and economic outcomes for youth in Canada and globally.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the blood bacterial microbiota in healthy and febrile cats. High-quality sequencing reads from the 16S rRNA gene variable region V3-V4 were obtained from genomic blood DNA belonging to 145 healthy cats, and 140 febrile cats. Comparisons between the blood microbiota of healthy and febrile cats revealed dominant presence of Actinobacteria, followed by Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, and a lower relative abundance of Bacteroidetes. Upon lower taxonomic levels, the bacterial composition was significantly different between healthy and febrile cats. The families Faecalibacterium and Kineothrix (Firmicutes), and Phyllobacterium (Proteobacteria) experienced increased abundance in febrile samples. Whereas Thioprofundum (Proteobacteria) demonstrated a significant decrease in abundance in febrile. The bacterial composition and beta diversity within febrile cats was different according to the affected body system (Oral/GI, systemic, skin, and respiratory) at both family and genus levels. Sex and age were not significant factors affecting the blood microbiota of febrile cats nor healthy ones. Age was different between young adult and mature adult healthy cats. Alpha diversity was unaffected by any factors. Overall, the findings suggest that age, health status and nature of disease are significant factors affecting blood microbiota diversity and composition in cats, but sex is not.

38. The association between midwifery staffing and reported harmful incidents: a cross-sectional analysis of routinely collected data

Abstract

Abstract Background Independent inquiries have identified that appropriate staffing in maternity units is key to enabling quality care and minimising harm, but optimal staffing levels can be difficult to achieve when there is a shortage of midwives. The services provided and how they are staffed (total staffing, skill-mix and deployment) have been changing, and the effects of workforce changes on care quality and outcomes have not been assessed. This study aims to explore the association between daily midwifery staffing levels and the rate of reported harmful incidents affecting mothers and babies. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of daily reports of clinical incidents in maternity inpatient areas matched with inpatient staffing levels for three maternity services in England, using data from April 2015 to February 2020. Incidents resulting in harm to mothers or babies was the primary outcome measure. Staffing levels were calculated from daily staffing rosters, quantified in Hours Per Patient Day (HPPD) for midwives and maternity assistants. Understaffing was defined as staffing below the mean for the service. A negative binomial hierarchical model was used to assess the relationship between exposure to low staffing and reported incidents involving harm. Results The sample covered 106,904 maternal admissions over 46 months. The rate of harmful incidents in each of the three services ranged from 2.1 to 3.0 per 100 admissions across the study period. Understaffing by registered midwives was associated with an 11% increase in harmful incidents (adjusted IRR 1.110, 95% CI 1.002,1.229). Understaffing by maternity assistants was not associated with an increase in harmful incidents (adjusted IRR 0.919, 95% 0.813,1.039). Analysis of specific types of incidents showed no statistically significant associations, but most of the point estimates were in the direction of increased incidents when services were understaffed. Conclusion When there is understaffing by registered midwives, more harmful incidents are reported but understaffing by maternity assistants is not associated with higher risk of harms. Adequate registered midwife staffing levels are crucial for maintaining safety. Changes in the profile of maternity service workforces need to be carefully scrutinised to prevent mothers and babies being put at risk of avoidable harm.

Abstract

Abstract Introduction Clinical practice guidelines recommend against the routine use of psychotropic medications in residential aged care facilities (RACFs). Knowledge brokers are individuals or groups who facilitate the transfer of knowledge into practice. The objective of this trial is to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of using knowledge brokers to translate Australia’s new Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Appropriate Use of Psychotropic Medications in People Living with Dementia and in Residential Aged Care. Methods and analysis The Evidence-based Medication knowledge Brokers in Residential Aged CarE (EMBRACE) trial is a helix-counterbalanced randomised controlled trial. The 12-month trial will be conducted in up to 19 RACFs operated by four Australian aged care provider organisations in Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia and Queensland. RACFs will be randomised to receive three levels of implementation strategies (knowledge broker service, pharmacist-led quality use of medications education activities and distribution of the Guidelines and supporting materials) across three medication contexts (antipsychotics, benzodiazepines and antidepressants). Implementation strategies will be delivered by an embedded on-site aged care pharmacist working at a system level across each participating RACF. All RACFs will receive all implementation strategies simultaneously but for different medication contexts. The primary outcome will be a composite dichotomous measure of 6-month RACF-level concordance with Guideline recommendations and good practice statements among people using antipsychotics, benzodiazepines and antidepressants for changed behaviours. Secondary outcomes will include proportion of residents with Guideline concordant use of antipsychotics, benzodiazepines and antidepressants measured at the RACF-level and proportion of residents with psychotropic medication use, hospitalisation, falls, falls with injury, polypharmacy, quality of life, activities of daily living, medication incidents and behavioural incidents measured at the RACF-level. Discussion The EMBRACE trial investigates a novel guideline implementation strategy to improve the safe and effective use of psychotropic medications in RACFs. We anticipate that the findings will provide new information on the potential role of knowledge brokers for successful and cost-effective guideline implementation. Abstract

Causal Bayesian Networks provide an important tool for reasoning under uncertainty with potential application to many complex causal systems. Structure learning algorithms that can tell us something about the causal structure of these systems are becoming increasingly important. In the literature, the validity of these algorithms is often tested for sensitivity over varying sample sizes, hyper-parameters, and occasionally objective functions. In this paper, we show that the order in which the variables are read from data can have much greater impact on the accuracy of the algorithm than these factors. Because the variable ordering is arbitrary, any significant effect it has on learnt graph accuracy is concerning, and this raises questions about the validity of the results produced by algorithms that are sensitive to, but have not been assessed against, different variable orderings.

Abstract

A 1-year-old mixed breed dog initially presented with marked ascites due to a low-protein transudate resulting from portal hypertension. Laboratory evaluation revealed non-regenerative anemia, lymphopenia, thrombocytopenia, evidence of hepatic insufficiency [hypoalbuminemia, decreased urea, increased post-prandial bile acids, prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT)] and Ehrlichia canis infection. Approximately a week later, the dog was declining and was euthanized. On autopsy, multifocal hepatic granulomas and acquired portosystemic shunts (APSS) were seen. Imprint cytology revealed fungal hyphae and pyogranulomatous inflammation in the liver and brain. Disseminated Cladophialophora bantiana phaeohyphomycosis was diagnosed by histologic examination, culture and PCR. Immunosuppression due to ehrlichiosis is suspected to have predisposed this animal to fungal infection. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report of C. bantiana in the West Indies.

Abstract

Abstract Background This study estimated the prevalence of evidence-based care received by a population-based sample of Australian residents in long-term care (LTC) aged ≥ 65 years in 2021, measured by adherence to clinical practice guideline (CPG) recommendations. Methods Sixteen conditions/processes of care amendable to estimating evidence-based care at a population level were identified from prevalence data and CPGs. Candidate recommendations (n = 5609) were extracted from 139 CPGs which were converted to indicators. National experts in each condition rated the indicators via the RAND-UCLA Delphi process. For the 16 conditions, 236 evidence-based care indicators were ratified. A multi-stage sampling of LTC facilities and residents was undertaken. Trained aged-care nurses then undertook manual structured record reviews of care delivered between 1 March and 31 May 2021 (our record review period) to assess adherence with the indicators. Results Care received by 294 residents with 27,585 care encounters in 25 LTC facilities was evaluated. Residents received care for one to thirteen separate clinical conditions/processes of care (median = 10, mean = 9.7). Adherence to evidence-based care indicators was estimated at 53.2% (95% CI: 48.6, 57.7) ranging from a high of 81.3% (95% CI: 75.6, 86.3) for Bladder and Bowel to a low of 12.2% (95% CI: 1.6, 36.8) for Depression. Six conditions (skin integrity, end-of-life care, infection, sleep, medication, and depression) had less than 50% adherence with indicators. Conclusions This is the first study of adherence to evidence-based care for people in LTC using multiple conditions and a standardised method. Vulnerable older people are not receiving evidence-based care for many physical problems, nor care to support their mental health nor for end-of-life care. The six conditions in which adherence with indicators was less than 50% could be the focus of improvement efforts.

45. Hybrid Bayesian network discovery with latent variables by scoring multiple interventions

Abstract

In Bayesian Networks (BNs), the direction of edges is crucial for causal reasoning and inference. However, Markov equivalence class considerations mean it is not always possible to establish edge orientations, which is why many BN structure learning algorithms cannot orientate all edges from purely observational data. Moreover, latent confounders can lead to false positive edges. Relatively few methods have been proposed to address these issues. In this work, we present the hybrid mFGS-BS (majority rule and Fast Greedy equivalence Search with Bayesian Scoring) algorithm for structure learning from discrete data that involves an observational data set and one or more interventional data sets. The algorithm assumes causal insufficiency in the presence of latent variables and produces a Partial Ancestral Graph (PAG). Structure learning relies on a hybrid approach and a novel Bayesian scoring paradigm that calculates the posterior probability of each directed edge being added to the learnt graph. Experimental results based on well-known networks of up to 109 variables and 10k sample size show that mFGS-BS improves structure learning accuracy relative to the state-of-the-art and it is computationally efficient.

Abstract

Learning the structure of a Bayesian Network (BN) with score-based solutions involves exploring the search space of possible graphs and moving towards the graph that maximises a given objective function. Some algorithms offer exact solutions that guarantee to return the graph with the highest objective score, while others offer approximate solutions in exchange for reduced computational complexity. This paper describes an approximate BN structure learning algorithm, which we call Model Averaging Hill-Climbing (MAHC), that combines two novel strategies with hill-climbing search. The algorithm starts by pruning the search space of graphs, where the pruning strategy can be viewed as an aggressive version of the pruning strategies that are typically applied to combinatorial optimisation structure learning problems. It then performs model averaging in the hill-climbing search process and moves to the neighbouring graph that maximises the objective function, on average, for that neighbouring graph and over all its valid neighbouring graphs. Comparisons with other algorithms spanning different classes of learning suggest that the combination of aggressive pruning with model averaging is both effective and efficient, particularly in the presence of data noise.

47. Apprenticing Students into Political Participation: Using Critical Visual Literacy to Review and Redesign the School Website

Abstract

This study examines 12 lessons undertaken with a Year 5 English Language Arts elementary class where students are explicitly introduced to a grammar for critical visual literacy. The goal is to apprentice students into political participation by developing their skills for critically reviewing and redesigning visual texts on the school website. The research is presented as an exploratory qualitative case study of a visiting teacher-researcher who collects data through audio and video recordings of students' learning, work samples, and semi-structured interviews where students reflect on their learning outcomes. Data from four case study students are analysed to document which teaching and learning experiences support the development of students' critical visual literacy practices and the way they respond to the political participation apprenticeship. The findings are that various students demonstrate their critical visual literacy skills through different activities within the unit of work, and that students are consciously supportive of their apprenticeship into the various dimensions of political participation.

Abstract

Bayesian Networks (BNs) have become increasingly popular over the last few decades as a tool for reasoning under uncertainty in fields as diverse as medicine, biology, epidemiology, economics and the social sciences. This is especially true in real-world areas where we seek to answer complex questions based on hypothetical evidence to determine actions for intervention. However, determining the graphical structure of a BN remains a major challenge, especially when modelling a problem under causal assumptions. Solutions to this problem include the automated discovery of BN graphs from data, constructing them based on expert knowledge, or a combination of the two. This paper provides a comprehensive review of combinatoric algorithms proposed for learning BN structure from data, describing 74 algorithms including prototypical, well-established and state-of-the-art approaches. The basic approach of each algorithm is described in consistent terms, and the similarities and differences between them highlighted. Methods of evaluating algorithms and their comparative performance are discussed including the consistency of claims made in the literature. Approaches for dealing with data noise in real-world datasets and incorporating expert knowledge into the learning process are also covered.
