Antiferromagnetic (AF) topological materials offer a fertile ground to explore a variety of quantum phenomena such as axion magnetoelectric dynamics and chiral Majorana fermions. To realize such intriguing states, it is essential to establish a direct link between electronic states and topology in the AF phase, whereas this has been challenging because of the lack of a suitable materials platform. Here we report the experimental realization of the AF topological-insulator phase in NdBi. By using micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we discovered contrasting surface electronic states for two types of AF domains; the surface having the out-of-plane component in the AF-ordering vector displays Dirac-cone states with a gigantic energy gap, whereas the surface parallel to the AF-ordering vector hosts gapless Dirac states despite the time-reversal-symmetry breaking. The present results establish an essential role of combined symmetry to protect massless Dirac fermions under the presence of AF order and widen opportunities to realize exotic phenomena utilizing AF topological materials., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures

We have fabricated a 180$^\circ$-twisted bilayer ReSe$_2$ by stacking two centrosymmetric monolayer ReSe$_2$ flakes in opposite directions, which is expected to lose spatial inversion symmetry. By the second harmonic generation and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we successfully observed spatial inversion symmetry breaking and emergent band dispersions. The band calculation shows the finite lifting of spin degeneracy (~50 meV) distinct from natural monolayer and bilayer ReSe$_2$. Our results demonstrate that the spin-momentum locked state, which leads to spintronic functions and Berry-curvature-related phenomena, can be realized even with the stacking of centrosymmetric monolayers., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

We present an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the single-layer T*-type structured cuprate SmLa$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ with unique five-fold pyramidal oxygen coordination. Upon varying oxygen content, T*-SmLa$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ evolved from a Mott-insulating to a metallic state where the Luttinger sum rule breaks down under the assumption of a large hole-like Fermi surface. This is in contrast with the known doping evolution of the structural isomer La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ with six-fold octahedral coordination. In addition, quantitatively characterized Fermi surface suggests that the empirical $T_\mathrm{c}$ rule for octahedral oxygen-coordination systems does not apply to T*-SmLa$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. The present results highlight unique properties of the T*-type cuprates possibly rooted in its oxygen coordination, and necessitate thorough investigation with careful evaluation of disorder effects., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Through in situ photoemission spectroscopy (PES), we investigated the changes in the electronic structure of Cr-doped VO2 films coherently grown on TiO2 (001) substrates. The electronic phase diagram of CrxV1-xO2 is drawn by a combination of electric and spectroscopic measurements. The phase diagram is similar to that of bulk CrxV1-xO2, while the temperature of metal-insulator transition (TMIT) is significantly suppressed by the epitaxial strain effect. In the range of x = 0-0.04, where TMIT remains unchanged as a function of x, the PES spectra show dramatic change across TMIT, demonstrating the characteristic spectral changes associated with the Peierls phenomenon. In contrast, for x > 0.04, the TMIT linearly increases, and the metal-insulator transition (MIT) may disappear at x = 0.08-0.12. The PES spectra at x = 0.08 exhibit pseudogap behavior near the Fermi level, whereas the characteristic temperature-induced change remains almost intact, suggesting the existence of local V-V dimerization. The suppression of V-V dimerization with increasing x was confirmed by polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy. These spectroscopic investigations reveal that the energy gap and V 3d states are essentially unchanged with 0 $\le$ x $\le$ 0.08 despite the suppression of V-V dimerization. The invariance of the energy gap with respect to x suggests that the MIT in CrxV1-xO2 arises primarily from the strong electron correlations, namely the Peierls-assisted Mott transition. Meanwhile, the pseudogap at x = 0.08 eventually evolves to a full gap (Mott gap) at x = 0.12, which is consistent with the disappearance of the temperature-dependent MIT in the electronic phase diagram. The predicted physical properties of double perovskites have usually been compromised by their intrinsic B-antisite (AS) disorder effect, but the relationship between them is still unclear for the La2MnCoO6 (LMCO) system. This study focuses on controlling the AS disorder and quantitatively reveals correlations with magnetic and electronic states in epitaxial LMCO films grown on (111) SrTiO3 substrates. The AS fraction was precisely controlled by tuning the growth conditions as evaluated from saturation magnetization and x-ray reflection profiles. The saturation magnetization at 5 K decreased linearly from 6 uB per formula unit by 50% as the AS fraction increased from 0 (perfectly ordered) to 0.5 (fully disordered). The x-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that valence states of Mn and Co were 4+ (3d^3) and 2+ (3d^7), respectively, regardless of AS fraction. A local-spin-moment model is proposed to explain the net magnetizations with and without AS disorder and Mn/Co valence states, suggesting that only the rearrangement of local spin moment of Co at the antisite plays a key role in tuning the magnetism in this LMCO system.

Mn$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$ (MnGa) with the $L1_0$ structure is a ferromagnetic material with strong perpendicular magneto-crystalline anisotropy. Although MnGa thin films have been successfully grown epitaxially and studied for various spintronics devices, fundamental understandings of its electronic structure are still lacking. To address this issue, we have investigated $L1_0$-MnGa thin films using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We have observed a large Fermi surface with a rhombic shape in the $k_x$-$k_y$ plane overlapping neighboring Fermi surfaces. The $k_z$ dependence of the band structure suggests that the band dispersion observed by ARPES comes from the three-dimensional band structure of MnGa folded by a $\sqrt{2} \times \sqrt{2}$ reconstruction. The band dispersion across the corner of the rhombic Fermi surface forms an electron pocket with a weak $k_z$ dependence. The effective mass and the mobility of the bands crossing the Fermi level near the corner are estimated from the ARPES images. Based on the experimental findings, the relationship between the observed band structure and the spin-dependent properties in MnGa-based heterostructures is discussed., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

Through ${in~situ}$ photoemission spectroscopy, we investigated the change in the electronic and crystal structures of dimensionality-controlled VO$_2$ films coherently grown on TiO$_2$(001) substrates. In the nanostructured films, the balance between the instabilities of a bandlike Peierls transition and a Mott transition is controlled as a function of thickness. The characteristic spectral change associated with temperature-driven metal-insulator transition in VO$_2$ thick films holds down to 1.5 nm (roughly corresponding to five V atoms along the [001] direction), whereas VO$_2$ films of less than 1.0 nm exhibit insulating nature without V-V dimerization. These results suggest that the delicate balance between a Mott instability and a bandlike Peierls instability is modulated at a scale of a few nanometers by the dimensional crossover effects and confinement effects, which consequently induce the complicated electronic phase diagram of ultrathin VO$_2$ films., Comment: 30 pages, 4 main figures, 4 supplementary figures

We realize a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in ZnO by simply depositing pure aluminum on its surface in ultra-high vacuum, and characterize its electronic structure using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The aluminum oxidizes into alumina by creating oxygen vacancies that dope the bulk conduction band of ZnO and confine the electrons near its surface. The electron density of the 2DES is up to two orders of magnitude higher than those obtained in ZnO heterostructures. The 2DES shows two $s$-type subbands, that we compare to the $d$-like 2DESs in titanates, with clear signatures of many-body interactions that we analyze through a self-consistent extraction of the system self-energy and a modeling as a coupling of a 2D Fermi liquid with a Debye distribution of phonons., Comment: Article + Supplementary Material, 12 pages, 3 main figures, 6 supplementary figures

Magnetic anisotropies of ferromagnetic thin films are induced by epitaxial strain from the substrate via strain-induced anisotropy in the orbital magnetic moment and that in the spatial distribution of spin-polarized electrons. However, the preferential orbital occupation in ferromagnetic metallic La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) thin films studied by x-ray linear dichroism (XLD) has always been found out-of-plane for both tensile and compressive epitaxial strain and hence irrespective of the magnetic anisotropy. In order to resolve this mystery, we directly probed the preferential orbital occupation of spin-polarized electrons in LSMO thin films under strain by angle-dependent x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). Anisotropy of the spin-density distribution was found to be in-plane for the tensile strain and out-of-plane for the compressive strain, consistent with the observed magnetic anisotropy. The ubiquitous out-of-plane preferential orbital occupation seen by XLD is attributed to the occupation of both spin-up and spin-down out-of-plane orbitals in the surface magnetic dead layer., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

We study the effect of oxygen vacancies on the electronic structure of the model strongly correlated metal SrVO$_3$. By means of angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) synchrotron experiments, we investigate the systematic effect of the UV dose on the measured spectra. We observe the onset of a spurious dose-dependent prominent peak at an energy range were the lower Hubbard band has been previously reported in this compound, raising questions on its previous interpretation. By a careful analysis of the dose dependent effects we succeed in disentangling the contributions coming from the oxygen vacancy states and from the lower Hubbard band. We obtain the intrinsic ARPES spectrum for the zero-vacancy limit, where a clear signal of a lower Hubbard band remains. We support our study by means of state-of-the-art ab initio calculations that include correlation effects and the presence of oxygen vacancies. Our results underscore the relevance of potential spurious states affecting ARPES experiments in correlated metals, which are associated to the ubiquitous oxygen vacancies as extensively reported in the context of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the surface of insulating $d^0$ transition metal oxides., Comment: Manuscript + Supplemental Material, 12 pages, 9 figures

We report on theoretical and experimental investigation of A-site driven ferroelectricity in ferromagnetic La2NiMnO6 thin films grown on SrTiO3 substrates. Structural analysis and density functional theory calculations show that epitaxial strain stretches the rhombohedral La2NiMnO6 crystal lattice along the [111]cubic direction, triggering a displacement of the A-site La ions in the double perovskite lattice. The lattice distortion and the A-site displacements stabilize a ferroelectric polar state in ferromagnetic La2NiMnO6 crystals. The ferroelectric state only appears in the rhombohedral La2NiMnO6 phase, where MnO6 and NiO6 octahedral tilting is inhibited by the 3-fold crystal symmetry. We present the discovery of a candidate of giant radio-quiet Lyman-alpha (Lya) blob (RQLAB) in a large-scale structure around a high-redshift radio galaxy (HzRG) lying in a giant Lya halo, B3 J2330+3927 at redshift z=3.087. We obtained Lya imaging around B3 J2330+3927 with Subaru/Suprime-Cam to search for Lya emitters (LAEs) and absorbers (LAAs) at redshift z=3.09+-0.03. We detected candidate 127 LAEs and 26 LAAs in the field of view of 31' x 24'. We found that B3 J2330+3927 is surrounded by a 130 kpc Lya halo and a large-scale (60 x 20 comoving Mpc) filamentary structure. The large-scale structure contains one prominent local density peak with an overdensity of greater than 5, which is 8' (15 comoving Mpc) away from B3 J2330+3927. In this peak, we discovered a candidate 100 kpc RQLAB. The existence of both types of Lya nebulae in the same large-scale structure suggests that giant Lya nebulae need special large-scale environments to form. On smaller scales, however, the location of B3 J2330+3927 is not a significant local density peak in this structure, in contrast to the RQLAB. There are two possible interpretations of the difference of the local environments of these two Lya nebulae. Firstly, RQLAB may need a prominent (delta ~ 5) density peak of galaxies to form through intense star-bursts due to frequent galaxy interactions/mergers and/or continuous gas accretion in an overdense environment. On the other hand, Lya halo around HzRG may not always need a prominent density peak to form if the surrounding Lya halo is mainly powered by its radio and AGN activities. Alternatively, both RQLAB and Lya halo around HzRG may need prominent density peaks to form but we could not completely trace the density of galaxies because we missed evolved and dusty galaxies in this survey., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Since 1990, the United Nations is annually holding a workshop on basic space science for the benefit of the worldwide development of astronomy. Additional to the scientific benefits of the workshops and the strengthening of international cooperation, the workshops lead to the establishment of astronomical telescope facilities through the Official Development Assistance (ODA) of Japan. Teaching material, hands-on astrophysics material, and variable star observing programmes had been developed for the operation of such astronomical telescope facilities in an university environment. This approach to astronomical telescope facility, observing programme, and teaching astronomy has become known as the basic space science TRIPOD concept.
