6. Effect of aromatic hydrocarbon addition on in situ powder-in-tube processed MgB2 tapes

Abstract

We fabricated in situ powder-in-tube processed MgB2/Fe tapes using aromatic hydrocarbon of benzene, naphthalene, and thiophene as additives, and investigated the superconducting properties. We found that these aromatic hydrocarbons were very effective for increasing the Jc values. The Jc values of 20mol% benzene-added tapes reached 130A/mm2 at 4.2K and 10T. This value was almost comparable to that of 10mol% SiC-added tapes and about four times higher than that of tapes with no additions. Microstructure analyses suggest that this Jc enhancement is due to both the substitution of carbon for boron in MgB2 and the smaller MgB2 grain size., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The influence of mechanical strain on the critical current (Ic) is investigated for MgB2/stainless steel (SUS316) superconducting tapes. The tapes are fabricated by using 'powder in tube' method and deformation process without any heat treatment. The tensile axial strain along tape length is successfully induced to the sample by using a U-shape holder made of stainless steel (SUS304). Two samples are examined at 4.2 K in 5 T (B is applied perpendicular to the tape surface). While the initial Ic at zero external strain state (Ic0) varies (30.4 and 33.3 A), normalized Ic (Ic/Ic0) vs. external strain relations fall on the same curve. Linear increase of Ic is observed from zero external strain state to 0.5% strain (107% of Ic0). Rapid and large degradation occurs at the strain exceeding 0.4-0.5%. 9. Uniaxial Tensile Stress Tolerance of Ultra-Thin Nb3Sn Composite Wires and Twisted Cables

Abstract

Ultra-thin A15 composite wires with a diameter of 0.03–0.05 mm are being developed by National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) to realize flexible Rutherford cables for high field superconducting accelerator magnets. Since the bending strain is approximately proportional to the wire diameter, a cable composed of thin wires can be bent to a smaller bending diameter without the degradation of critical current (Ic). Thus, react-and-wind cables with ultra-thin Nb3Sn wires are expected to be realized. In our previous study, the basic mechanical properties including fracture strength and Young's modulus of 0.05-mm-thick bronze-processed Nb3Sn wires were evaluated by a single- fiber tensile test. As a next step, in this study, a tensile test was conducted for a twisted cable with 19 0.05-mm-thick wires at room temperature to confirm whether the mechanical strength of the twisted cable can be predicted from that of the single wire. The stress tolerance of the single wire and twisted cable was assessed by measuring Ic at 4.2 K after applying various uniaxial tensile loads at room temperature. The tensile stress limit of Ic was compared between the single wire and twisted cable.

38. Mechanical Properties of Ultra-Thin Nb3Sn Composite Wires

Abstract

Flexible Rutherford cables are needed to realize high field superconducting magnets with A15 conductors based on the react-and-wind (R&W) technology. Aiming such an application, ultra-thin A15 composite wires with a diameter of 0.03–0.05 mm have been developed by the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS). Mechanical properties of such ultra-thin Nb3Sn wires were evaluated to determine the cabling parameters and mechanical analysis of twisted cables. Tensile tests were performed at room temperature for 0.05 mm-thick Nb3Sn wires before and after heat treatment for the first time. Basic mechanical parameters such as 0.2% proof strength and fracture strength were evaluated from a stress–strain curve. Young's modulus of such a thin wire was determined from unlading and reloading slopes of a load–stroke curve for the specimens with different gauge lengths. Fracture strain was estimated without using extensometers and strain gauges by correcting for machine deformation. Based on these results, we concluded that a simple technique to measure stress–strain curves for ultra-thin Nb3Sn wires was able to be established.
