6. A possibility of influence factors on winter physical damage of grapevines in a snowy vineyard

Abstract

Hokkaido in northern Japan is a typical subpolar region and wine production using traditional cultivars can be done recently. However, there is an issue that the grapevines have short life spans in snowy central Hokkaido. This study investigates the effect of snow itself and its interaction with vineyard slope and grapevine stiffness on physical stress. In comparison of the flatness of the vineyard, the distortion of the basal trunk in the slope zone was greater than in the flat zones in the snowy mid-season. In comparison between cultivars, the distortion of the basal trunk in the flexible 'Kerner' was greater than in rigid 'Gewürztraminer', even in the flat zones. The magnitude of the distortion coincides with the mortality of grapevines. Although the changes in distortion showed a transition in just two winter durations, these results suggested a possibility that the snow cover might be linked to one of the physical damages of grapevines in vineyards in heavy snowy regions., VITIS - Journal of Grapevine Research, Vol. 61 No. 4 (2022): Vitis

The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of vision-threatening ocular diseases, including glaucoma, among subjects who participated in specific health checkups in Japan.Methods: This cross-sectional study included 1360 individuals who underwent comprehensive ophthalmic examinations at 16 ophthalmology clinics located in three municipalities. We surveyed the study participants using a questionnaire. The participants also underwent visual acuity and refraction tests, intraocular pressure tests, slit-lamp microscopy, fundus examinations, fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, and static perimetry.Results: The mean age of the subjects was 63.7 ± 8.7 years (range, 40– 74 years). Among the 1360 participants, 168 (12.4%) were diagnosed with glaucoma and 33 (2.4%) with preperimetric glaucoma. Cataracts were seen in 741 participants (54.5%), and 77 (5.7%) were diagnosed with clinically significant cataracts. Retinal diseases included macular degeneration (1.2%), diabetic retinopathy (1.0%), chorioretinal atrophy (0.5%), macular epiretinal membrane (2.9%), branch retinal vein occlusion (0.7%), and others (2.0%). Regarding the type of glaucoma, 93.5% of participants with glaucoma were diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma in a broad sense (81.0% with normal-tension glaucoma and 12.5% with primary open-angle glaucoma). Multivariate analysis showed that male sex, age, systemic comorbidities, and myopia were significant risk factors for open-angle glaucoma.Conclusion: Many adults with ocular diseases were screened by ophthalmic checkups. The addition of simultaneous ophthalmic checkups to specific health checkups could be an effective measure for the prevention of visual impairment in the older population.Keywords: cataract, glaucoma, ocular disease, prevalence, vision screening

Abstract

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: There have been few studies on the association of fruit and vegetable (FV) intake with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in Asian populations where both dietary habits and disease structure are different from western countries. No study in Asia has found its significant association with stroke. We examined associations of FV intake with mortality risk from total CVD, stroke and coronary heart diseases (CHDs) in a representative Japanese sample. METHODS: A total of 9112 participants aged from 24-year follow-up data in the NIPPON DATA80, of which baseline data were obtained in the National Nutrition Survey Japan in 1980, were studied. Dietary data were obtained from 3-day weighing dietary records. Participants were divided into sex-specific quartiles of energy adjusted intake of FV. Multivariate-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) were calculated between strata of the total of FV intake, fruit intake and vegetable intake. The adjustment included age, sex, smoking, drinking habit and energy adjusted intakes of sodium and some other food groups. RESULTS: Participants with higher FV intake were older, ate more fish, milk and dairy products and soybeans and legumes and ate less meat. Multivariate-adjusted HR (95% confidence interval;P; P for trend) for the highest versus the lowest quartile of the total of FV intake was 0.74 (0.61-0.91;0.004;0.003) for total CVD, 0.80 (0.59-1.09;0.105;0.036) for stroke and 0.57 (0.37-0.87;0.010;0.109) for CHD. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that higher total intake of FVs was significantly associated with reduced risk of CVD mortality in Japan. Yoshiyuki Kita,1 Gábor Holló,2 Akiko Murai,1 Ritsuko Kita,1 Tsunehiro Saito,1 Akito Hirakata1 1Department of Ophthalmology, Kyorin University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan; 2Department of Ophthalmology, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary Purpose: To compare the relationships between circumpapillary microperimetry (MP)-sensitivity measurements and various circumpapillary retinal thickness parameters in healthy and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) eyes.Methods: In 14 eyes of 14 healthy subjects and 22 early–moderate POAG eyes of 22 patients, circumpapillary optical coherence tomography thickness measurements (RS-3000 Advance OCT, NIDEK) of the retinal nerve fiber layer (cpRNFL), total retina (cpTR), and ganglion cell complex (cpGCC) and outer retina (cpOR) and circumpapillary MP-sensitivity measurements (MP-3 microperimeter, NIDEK) were made in 12 sectors of identical circumpapillary circles. The structure-function relationship was investigated in each sector.Results: Statistically significant correlations with circumpapillary MP-sensitivity values were found for cpRNFL in five sectors, cpTR in nine sectors, cpGCC in nine sectors, and cpOR in three sectors. The structure-function relationship was strong (r=0.4–0.69) in three sectors for cpRNFL, in six for cpTR, in four for cpGCC, and in one for cpOR. The relationship was very strong (r>0.7) in one sector for cpRNFL, cpTR, and cpGCC, and in no sectors for cpOR. The very strong relationships all occurred in sector 5 (inferotemporal sector).Conclusion: In our pilot study, the circumpapillary structure-function relationship was more extensive for cpTR thickness and cpGCC thickness than for cpRNFL thickness, which suggests that the former parameters may require greater attention in structure-function research into glaucoma. 35. Two-dimensional microfibril angle mapping via polarization microscopy for wood classification

Abstract

A new method is presented for measuring microfibril angles (MFAs) from transverse tree sections by using polarized optical microscopy combined with a liquid-crystal tunable filter. The MFA transition analysis of tree growth rings via generalized two-dimensional correlation is proposed. The unique features of two anatomically similar Cupressaceae species, Chamaecyparis obtusa S. & Z. and Thujopsis dolabrata S. & Z. and its variant, were extracted through MFA analysis. The technique efficiently visualized MFA distributions under wide field observation and uncovered seasonal differences. Classification results of supervised models exhibited 60% accuracy, despite featureless cross-sections of the conifers. PML has various neurologic symptoms and has very poor prognosis. A 36-year-old man developed transverse myelitis and had a psychiatric disorder at the age of 26. He was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and neuropsychiatric SLE (NPSLE), on the basis of leukopenia and presence of anti-DNA and anti-nuclear antibodies. Treatment with glucocorticoid (GC) was started, and remission was introduced. Six months before PML onset, his condition was complicated with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) due to exacerbation of SLE. Remission re-induction therapy by GC, cyclosporine-A, intravenous cyclophosphamide, and rituximab (RTX) was initiated and HLH improved. However, interleukin-6 levels of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) continued to rise. We thought that the disease activity of NPSLE worsened; thus, we introduced mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) 4 months before the PML onset. He developed progressive dysarthria and right hemiplegia. He was diagnosed with PML via magnetic resonance imaging and JC virus polymerase chain reaction in CSF. Considering that immunosuppressants, including RTX and MMF, are precipitating factors of PML, we discussed the RTX removal using plasma exchange (PEx), but we did not introduce PEx, because it was expected that the concentration of RTX was already lowered when he was diagnosed with PML. Treatment for PML with mefloquine and mirtazapine saved his life, but severe residual disabilities remained. This is the first report of a patient who developed PML during combination therapy with RTX and MMF.
