The third generation partnership project (3GPP) has recently defined two frequency bands for direct access with satellites, which is a concrete step toward realizing the anticipated space-air-ground integrated networks. In addition, given the rapid increase in the numbers of satellites orbiting the Earth and emerging satellites applications, non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) might soon need to operate with integrated access and backhaul (IAB), which has been standardized for terrestrial networks to enable low-cost, flexible and scalable network densification. Therefore, this work investigates the performance of satellite IAB, where the same spectrum resources at a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite are utilized to provide access to a handheld user (UE) and backhaul via inter-satellite links. The UE is assumed to operate with frequency division duplex (FDD) as specified by the 3GPP, while both FDD and time division duplex (TDD) are investigated for backhauling. Our analysis demonstrate that the interference between access and backhaul links can significantly affect the performance under TDD backhauling, especially when the access link comes with a high quality-of-service demands., Comment: Accepted for publication at the IEEE WCNC 2024

This paper provides an overview of the diverse range of applications and use cases for Single-Channel Full-Duplex (SCFD) techniques within the field of satellite communication. SCFD, allowing simultaneous transmission and reception on a single frequency channel, presents a transformative approach to enhancing satellite communication systems. We select eight potential use cases with the objective of highlighting the substantial potential of SCFD techniques in revolutionizing SatCom across a multitude of critical domains. In addition, preliminary results from the qualitative assessment are shown. In this paper, we tackle the problem of joint symbol level precoding (SLP) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) phase shift design with constellation rotation in the finite block length regime. We aim to increase energy efficiency by minimizing the total transmit power while satisfying the quality of service constraints. The total power consumption can be significantly minimized through the exploitation of multiuser interference by symbol level precoding and by the intelligent manipulation of the propagation environment using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces. In addition, the constellation rotation per user contributes to energy efficiency by aligning the symbol phases of the users, thus improving the utilization of constructive interference. The formulated power minimization problem is non-convex and correspondingly difficult to solve directly. Hence, we employ an alternating optimization algorithm to tackle the joint optimization of SLP and RIS phase shift design. The optimal phase of each user's constellation rotation is obtained via an exhaustive search algorithm. Through Monte-Carlo simulation results, we demonstrate that the proposed solution yields substantial power minimization as compared to conventional SLP, zero forcing precoding with RIS as well as the benchmark schemes without RIS., Comment: 6 pages,4 figures. To allow flexible and cost-efficient network densification and deployment, the integrated access and backhaul (IAB) was recently standardized by the third generation partnership project (3GPP) as part of the fifth-generation new radio (5G-NR) networks. However, the current standardization only defines the IAB for the terrestrial domain, while non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) are yet to be considered for such standardization efforts. In this work, we motivate the use of IAB in NTNs, and we discuss the compatibility issues between the 3GPP specifications on IAB in 5G-NR and the satellite radio regulations. In addition, we identify the required adaptation from the 3GPP and/or satellite operators for realizing an NTN-enabled IAB operation. A case study is provided for a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite-enabled in-band IAB operation with orthogonal and non-orthogonal bandwidth allocation between access and backhauling, and under both time- and frequency-division duplex (TDD/FDD) transmission modes. Numerical results demonstrate the feasibility of IAB through satellites, and illustrate the superiority of FDD over TDD transmission. Hybrid relaying networks (HRNs) combining both a relay and an intelligent reflective surface (IRS) can lead to enhanced rate performance compared to non-hybrid relaying schemes, where only either an IRS or a relay is utilized. However, utilizing both the relay and the IRS simultaneously results in higher power consumption for the HRNs compared to their counterpart. In this work, we study the required transmit power levels and the energy efficiency (EE) of HRNs utilizing both a half-duplex decode-and-forward (HD-DF) relay and an IRS, and compare their performance with non-hybrid relaying schemes. The impact of the required channel estimation overheads is considered when the reflective beamforming design (RBD) at the IRS is carried out under both instantaneous and statistical channel state information models. Also, the investigation is performed for both slow- and fast-changing environments. In terms of the transmit power requirements, our results show that HRNs can lead to higher power savings if the number of reflective elements at the IRS is not very large. However, non-hybrid relaying schemes are shown to be more energy-efficient, unless the targeted rate is high and the IRS is distant from both transmitter and receiver but within a close proximity to the relay.

Among the recent advances and innovations in wireless technologies, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have received much attention and are envisioned to be one of the enabling technologies for beyond 5G (B5G) networks. On the other hand, active (or classical) cooperative relays have played a key role in providing reliable and power-efficient communications in previous wireless generations. In this article, we focus on hybrid network architectures that amalgamate both active relays and RISs. The operation concept and protocols of each technology are first discussed. Subsequently, we present multiple use cases of cooperative hybrid networks where both active relays and RISs can coexist harmoniously for enhanced rate performance. Furthermore, a case study is provided which demonstrates the achievable rate performance of a communication network assisted by either an active relay, an RIS, or both, and with different relaying protocols. In this paper, we investigate a simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) assisting a massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) system. In particular, we derive a closed-form expression for the coverage probability of a STAR-RIS assisted mMIMO system while accounting for correlated fading and phase-shift errors. Notably, the phase configuration takes place at every several coherence intervals by optimizing the coverage probability since the latter depends on statistical channel state information (CSI) in terms of large-scale statistics. As a result, we achieve a reduced complexity and overhead for the optimization of passive beamforming, which are increased in the case of STAR-RIS networks with instantaneous CSI. This paper investigates the secrecy outage probability (SOP), the lower bound of SOP, and the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity (PNZ) of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted systems from an information-theoretic perspective. In particular, we consider the impacts of eavesdroppers' location uncertainty and the phase adjustment uncertainty, namely imperfect coherent phase shifting and discrete phase shifting on RIS. More specifically, analytical and simulation results are presented to show that (i) the SOP gain due to the increase of the RIS reflecting elements number gradually decreases; and (ii) both phase shifting designs demonstrate the same PNZ secrecy performance, in other words, the random discrete phase shifting outperforms the imperfect coherent phase shifting design with reduced complexity., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, conference

We study the performance of a phase-noise impaired double reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multiuser (MU) multiple-input single-output (MISO) system under spatial correlation at both RISs and base-station (BS). The downlink achievable rate is derived in closed-form under maximum ratio transmission (MRT) precoding. In addition, we obtain the optimal phase-shift design at both RISs in closed-form for the considered channel and phase-noise models. Numerical results validate the analytical expressions, and highlight the effects of different system parameters on the achievable rate. Our analysis shows that phase-noise can severely degrade the performance when users do not have direct links to both RISs, and can only be served via the double-reflection link. Also, we show that high spatial correlation at RISs is essential for high achievable rates.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) are planar structures connected to electronic circuitry, which can be employed to steer the electromagnetic signals in a controlled manner. Through this, the signal quality and the effective data rate can be substantially improved. While the benefits of RIS-assisted wireless communications have been investigated for various scenarios, some aspects of the network design, such as coverage, optimal placement of RIS, etc., often require complex optimization and numerical simulations, since the achievable effective rate is difficult to predict. This problem becomes even more difficult in the presence of phase estimation errors or location uncertainty, which can lead to substantial performance degradation if neglected. Considering randomly distributed receivers within a ring-shaped RIS-assisted wireless network, this paper mainly investigates the effective rate by taking into account the above-mentioned impairments. The key advantage of successive relaying (SR) networks is their ability to mimic the full-duplex (FD) operation with half-duplex (HD) relays. However, the main challenge that comes with such schemes is the associated inter-relay interference (IRI). In this work, we propose a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-enhanced SR network, where one RIS is deployed near each of the two relay nodes to provide spatial suppression of IRI, and to maximize the gain of desired signals. The resultant max-min optimization problem with joint phase-shift design for both RISs is first tackled via the semidefinite programming (SDP) approach. Then, a lower-complexity solution suitable for real-time implementation is proposed based on particle swarm optimization (PSO). Numerical results demonstrate that even relatively small RISs can provide significant gains in achievable rates of SR networks, and the proposed PSO scheme can achieve a near optimal performance.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are planar structures with attached electronic circuitry that enable a partially programmable communication environment. RIS operation can be regarded as nearly passive since it acts by simply reflecting the impinging traveling waves towards desired directions, thus requiring energy only for the reconfiguration of its reflective elements (REs). This paper tackles the problem of wirelessly powering RIS circuitry via control signaling. Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is considered by taking into account two basic principles: that signal quality of the control signals is sufficient for information detection, and that there is enough harvested energy for the reconfiguration. Some of the most common SWIPT receivers (time sharing, power splitting, dynamic power splitting, and antenna selection) are studied and the corresponding proposed optimization problems implementing the aforementioned principles are formulated and solved in closed form. In this work, we examine the potential of autonomous operation of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) using wireless energy harvesting from information signals. To this end, we first identify the main RIS power-consuming components and introduce a suitable power-consumption model. Subsequently, we introduce a novel RIS power-splitting architecture that enables simultaneous energy harvesting and beamsteering. Specifically, a subset of the RIS unit cells (UCs) is used for beamsteering while the remaining ones absorb energy. For the subset allocation, we propose policies obtained as solutions to two optimization problems. The first problem aims at maximizing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver without violating the RIS's energy harvesting demands. Additionally, the objective of the second problem is to maximize the RIS harvested power, while ensuring an acceptable SNR at the receiver. We prove that under particular propagation conditions, some of the proposed policies deliver the optimal solution of the two problems. Furthermore, we report numerical results that reveal the efficiency of the policies with respect to the optimal and very high-complexity brute-force design approach. Finally, through a case study of user tracking, we showcase that the RIS power-consumption demands can be secured by harvesting energy from information signals., Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures

In this work, we investigate the decode-and-forward (DF) relay-aided double reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted networks, where the signal is subject to reflections from two RISs before reaching the destination. Different relay-aided network architectures are considered for maximum achievable rate under a total power constraint. Phase optimization for the double-RIS channels is tackled via the alternating optimization and majorization-minimization (MM) schemes. Moreover, closed-form solutions are obtained for each case. Numerical results indicate that the deployment of two relays, one near each RIS, achieves higher rates at low and medium signal-to noise ratios (SNRs) compared to placing a single relay between the two RISs; while at high SNRs, the latter approach achieves higher rates only if the inter-relay interference for the former case is considerably high.

The next phase of satellite technology is being characterized by a new evolution in non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellites, which conveys exciting new communication capabilities to provide non-terrestrial connectivity solutions and to support a wide range of digital technologies from various industries. NGSO communication systems are known for a number of key features such as lower propagation delay, smaller size, and lower signal losses in comparison to the conventional geostationary orbit (GSO) satellites, which can potentially enable latency-critical applications to be provided through satellites. NGSO promises a substantial boost in communication speed and energy efficiency, and thus, tackling the main inhibiting factors of commercializing GSO satellites for broader utilization. The promised improvements of NGSO systems have motivated this paper to provide a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art NGSO research focusing on the communication prospects, including physical layer and radio access technologies along with the networking aspects and the overall system features and architectures. Beyond this, there are still many NGSO deployment challenges to be addressed to ensure seamless integration not only with GSO systems but also with terrestrial networks. These unprecedented challenges are also discussed in this paper, including coexistence with GSO systems in terms of spectrum access and regulatory issues, satellite constellation and architecture designs, resource management problems, and user equipment requirements. Finally, we outline a set of innovative research directions and new opportunities for future NGSO research.

In this paper, we examine the potential for a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to be powered by energy harvested from information signals. This feature might be key to reap the benefits of RIS technology's lower power consumption compared to active relays. We first identify the main RIS power-consuming components and then propose an energy harvesting and power consumption model. The satellite component is recognized as a promising solution to complement and extend the coverage of future Internet of things (IoT) terrestrial networks (TNs). In this context, a study item to integrate satellites into narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) systems has been approved within the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standardization body. However, as NB-IoT systems were initially conceived for TNs, their basic design principles and operation might require some key modifications when incorporating the satellite component. These changes in NB-IoT systems, therefore, need to be carefully implemented in order to guarantee a seamless integration of both TN and non-terrestrial network (NTN) for a global coverage. This paper addresses this adaptation for the random access (RA) step in NB-IoT systems, which is in fact the most challenging aspect in the NTN context, for it deals with multi-user time-frequency synchronization and timing advance for data scheduling. In particular, we propose an RA technique which is robust to typical satellite channel impairments, including long delays, significant Doppler effects, and wide beams, without requiring any modification to the current NBIoT RA waveform. Challenging environments comprise a range of scenarios, which share the fact that it is extremely difficult to establish a communication link using conventional technology due to many impairments typically associated with the propagation medium and increased signal scattering. Specifically, underwater and underground media are known to absorb electromagnetic radiation, which heavily affects the overall path loss. Industrial and disaster environments can be viewed as rich scattering environments with corresponding substantial multipath propagation leading to intersymbol interference and deterioration of signal quality. Although the challenges for the design of communication networks, and specifically the Internet of Things (IoT), in such environments are known, there is no common enabler or solution for all these applications. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been introduced to improve the signal propagation characteristics by focusing the signal power in the preferred direction, thus making the communication environment 'smart'. While the usual application of RIS is related to blockage avoidance, the very same technique can be used to reduce the effect of multipath and even partially compensate the signal absorption via passive beamforming. Due to the beneficial properties of RIS, its use in challenging environments can become the aforementioned enabler and a game changing technology. In this paper, we discuss potential use cases, deployment strategies and design aspects for RIS devices in underwater IoT, underground IoT as well as Industry 4.0 and emergency networks. Next-generation of satellite communication (SatCom) networks are expected to support extremely high data rates for a seamless integration into future large satellite-terrestrial networks. In view of the coming spectral limitations, the main challenge is to reduce the cost per bit, which can only be achieved by enhancing the spectral efficiency. In addition, the capability to quickly and flexibly assign radio resources according to the traffic demand distribution has become a must for future multibeam broadband satellite systems. This article presents the radio resource management problems encountered in the design of future broadband SatComs and provides a comprehensive overview of the available techniques to address such challenges. Firstly, we focus on the demand-matching formulation of the power and bandwidth assignment. Secondly, we present the scheduling design in practical multibeam satellite systems. Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) networks are known to be highly vulnerable to external in-band interference in terms of packet collisions which may substantially degrade the system performance. In order to enhance the performance in such cases, the telegram splitting (TS) method has been proposed recently. This approach exploits the typical burstiness of the interference via forward error correction (FEC) and offers a substantial performance improvement compared to other methods for packet transmissions in LPWA networks. While it has been already demonstrated that the TS method benefits from knowledge on the current interference state at the receiver side, corresponding practical receiver algorithms of high performance are still missing. The modeling of the bursty interference via Markov chains leads to the optimal detector in terms of a-posteriori symbol error probability. However, this solution requires a high computational complexity, assumes an a-priori knowledge on the interference characteristics and lacks flexibility. We propose a further developed scheme with increased flexibility and introduce an approach to reduce its complexity while maintaining a close-to-optimum performance. The concept of Smart Cities has been introduced as a way to benefit from the digitization of various ecosystems at a city level. To support this concept, future communication networks need to be carefully designed with respect to the city infrastructure and utilization of resources. Recently, the idea of 'smart' environment, which takes advantage of the infrastructure for better performance of wireless networks, has been proposed. This idea is aligned with the recent advances in design of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which are planar structures with the capability to reflect impinging electromagnetic waves toward preferred directions. Thus, RISs are expected to provide the necessary flexibility for the design of the 'smart' communication environment, which can be optimally shaped to enable cost- and energy-efficient signal transmissions where needed. Upon deployment of RISs, the ecosystem of the Smart Cities would become even more controllable and adaptable, which would subsequently ease the implementation of future communication networks in urban areas and boost the interconnection among private households and public services. In this paper, we describe our vision of the application of RISs in future Smart Cities. In particular, the research challenges and opportunities are addressed. Large communication networks, e.g. Internet of Things (IoT), are known to be vulnerable to co-channel interference. One possibility to address this issue is the use of orthogonal multiple access (OMA) techniques. However, due to a potentially very long duty cycle, OMA is not well suited for such schemes. Instead, random medium access (RMA) appears more promising. An RMA scheme is based on transmission of short data packets with random scheduling, which is typically unknown to the receiver. The received signal, which consists of the overlapping packets, can be used for energy harvesting and powering of a relay device. Such an energy harvesting relay may utilize the energy for further information processing and uplink transmission. In this paper, we address the design of a simultaneous information and power transfer scheme based on randomly scheduled packet transmissions and reliable symbol detection. We formulate a prediction problem with the goal to maximize the harvested power for an RMA scenario. In order to solve this problem, we propose a new prediction method, which shows a significant performance improvement compared to the straightforward baseline scheme.
