1. No Correlation between PD-L1 and NIS Expression in Lymph Node Metastatic Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

Abstract

Approximately 90% of thyroid cancers are differentiated thyroid cancers (DTCs), originating from follicular epithelial cells. Out of these, 90% are papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), and 10% are follicular thyroid cancer (FTC). The standard care procedure for PTC includes surgery, followed by radioiodine (RAI) ablation and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) suppressive therapy. Globally, treating radioiodine-refractory DTC poses a challenge. During malignant transformation, thyroid epithelial cells often lose their ability to absorb radioiodine due to impaired membrane targeting or lack of NIS (sodium/iodide symporter) expression. Recent reports show an increase in PD-L1 (programmed death ligand 1) expression in thyroid cancer cells during dedifferentiation. However, no research exists wherein NIS and PD-L1 expression are analyzed together in thyroid cancer. Therefore, we aimed to investigate and correlate PD-L1 and NIS expression within primary tumor samples of lymph node metastatic PTC. We analyzed the expression of hNIS (human sodium/iodide symporter) and PD-L1 in primary tumor samples from metastatic PTC patients using immunohistochemistry. Immunohistochemistry analysis of PD-L1 and NIS was conducted in 89 and 86 PTC cases, respectively. Any subcellular NIS localization was counted as a positive result. PD-L1 expression was absent in 25 tumors, while 58 tumors displayed PD-L1 expression in 1–50% of their cells; in 6 tumors, over 50% of the cells tested positive for PD-L1. NIS immunohistochemistry was performed for 86 primary papillary carcinomas, with 51 out of 86 tumors showcasing NIS expression. Only in seven cases was NIS localized in the plasma membrane; in most tumors, NIS was primarily found in the intracytoplasmic membrane compartments. In the case of PD-L1 staining, cells showing linear membrane positivity of any intensity were counted as positive. The evaluation of NIS immunostaining was simpler: cells showing staining of any intensity of cytoplasmic or membranous fashion were counted as positive. The number of NIS positive cells can be further divided into cytoplasmic and membrane positive compartments. There was no observed correlation between PD-L1 and NIS expression. We can speculate that the manipulation of the PD-1/PD-L1 axis using anti-PD-L1 or anti-PD-1 antibodies could reinstate the functional expression of NIS. However, based on our study, the only conclusion that can be drawn is that there is no correlation between the percentage of NIS- or PD-L1-expressing tumor cells in the primary tumor of lymph node metastatic PTC.

Objective. Modified levels of pro- (caspase3, Bax) and anti-apoptotic (Bcl-2) regulatory proteins have been detected in certain brain areas of schizophrenic patients indicating a possible dysregulation of apoptosis. In the present study, effects of antipsychotics, haloperidol (HAL) and olanzapine (OLA), on the gene expression of caspase3 (casp3), Bax and Bcl-2 were studied in vitro in mouse hippocampal mHippoE-2 cell line and in vivo in the hippocampus of MK-801 animal schizophrenia model with the aim to provide evidence that antipsychotics may affect the activity of apoptosis-related markers.

Abstract

Honey is a consumer-preferred, highly esteemed natural product with a broad variety of distinct bioactive components. In recent days, the consumption of high-added-value, honey-based products are increasingly coming to the forefront of interest, and thus huge efforts are being made by researchers/developers to elaborate honey variants with fortified biological value. Relevant human clinical trials have scarcely been accomplished; thus, the biological impact of honey and its derivatives has not been thoroughly revealed. In this work, we present our experiments on the development of a novel honey-based prototype and its plausible physiological impacts certified via human clinical trials. The investigated product was a newly elaborated honeydew-based prototype fortified with pumpkin, sea buckthorn, and inulin, which was subjected to a 13-week-long, double-blind, placebo-controlled human clinical trial. The prototypes were applied to 20 adult volunteers to establish the complex impact of the newly developed product. Conclusions drawn at the end of the trial were based on results of blood tests taken at diverse phases of the study. The positive physiological effects of consumption of the investigated products are underpinned by the fact that no significant elevations have been measured in terms of the blood glucose level and parameters featuring long-term blood sugar levels. Slight decrease of both LDL and HDL cholesterol levels were also experienced.

Abstract

Although proctoclysis (enema) is a historically proven, safe and cost-effective rehydration method that needs little training for users and can effectively replace intravenous hydration in different care settings, it is an uncommon choice for hydration in children with fever and is often missing in official guidelines. To evaluate the usefulness of proctoclysis, this study provides a scoping review of the existing literature. The matched literature was labelled in 5 categories, identifying 6 indication fields that are emphasized in the literature on rectal rehydration. The analysis showed that proctoclysis is mostly used in the context of diagnostic procedures, constipation or in the treatment of a gastrointestinal disease. It is also described as a quick, safe and cost-effective intervention for fluid replacement in emergency, critical care or resource-scarce settings. There are also socio-cultural variations in its use Additionally, we performed a survey on attitudes and experience of medical doctors towards proctoclysis based on a semi-structured questionnaire. In the survey, we analysed the experience of 35 medical doctors from 8 countries. Although we found a general acceptance of enema as beneficial in both hospitalized patients and in home care, doctors expressed the need for more experience with enema and the need for more education materials in order to effectively perform the procedure. Based on our findings, we suggest that further research is necessary examining the attitude towards proctoclysis among parents, nurses and doctors. Enema can have a considerable clinical advantage during home care for gastroenteritis or other infectious diseases with fever to prevent insufficient oral fluid intake resulting in a negative fluid balance. Risks and safety issues are rare and should be considered. However, due to its low level of social acceptability in order to reduce refusal rate, more education is necessary for both medical providers and parents.

Abstract

Isospin symmetry is a fundamental concept in nuclear physics. Even though isospin symmetry is partially broken, it holds approximately for most nuclear systems, which makes exceptions very interesting from the nuclear structure perspective. In this framework, it is expected that the spins and parities of the ground states of mirror nuclei should be the same, in particular for the simplest systems where a proton is exchanged with a neutron or vice versa. In this work, we present evidence that this assumption is broken in the mirror pair $^{71}$Br and $^{71}$Kr system. Our conclusions are based on a high-statistics $\beta$ decay study of $^{71}$Kr and on state-of-the-art shell model calculations. In our work, we also found evidence of a new state in $^{70}$Se, populated in the $\beta$-delayed proton emission process which can be interpreted as the long sought coexisting 0$^+$ state., Comment: 8 pages with references, 3 figures. Abstract

We report on the discovery of a very prominent mid-infrared (18-25 {\mu}m) excess associated with the trans-Neptunian dwarf planet (136472) Makemake. The excess, detected by the MIRI instrument of the James Webb Space Telescope, along with previous measurements from the Spitzer and Herschel space telescopes, indicates the occurrence of temperatures of about 150 K, much higher than what solid surfaces at Makemake's heliocentric distance could reach by solar irradiation. We identify two potential explanations: a continuously visible, currently active region, powered by subsurface upwelling and possibly cryovolcanic activity, covering <1% of Makemake's surface, or an as yet undetected ring containing very small carbonaceous dust grains, which have not been seen before in trans-Neptunian or Centaur rings. Both scenarios point to unprecedented phenomena among trans-Neptunian objects and could greatly impact our understanding of these distant worlds., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

Abstract

We present new observations from CHEOPS and TESS to clarify the architecture of the planetary system hosted by the old Galactic thick disk star TOI-561. Our global analysis, which also includes previously published photometric and radial velocity data, incontrovertibly proves that TOI-561 is hosting at least four transiting planets with periods of 0.44 days (TOI-561 b), 10.8 days (TOI-561 c), 25.7 days (TOI-561 d), and 77.1 days (TOI-561 e) and a fifth non-transiting candidate, TOI-561f with a period of 433 days. The precise characterisation of TOI-561's orbital architecture is interesting since old and metal-poor thick disk stars are less likely to host ultra-short period Super-Earths like TOI-561 b. The new period of planet -e is consistent with the value obtained using radial velocity alone and is now known to be $77.14399\pm0.00025$ days, thanks to the new CHEOPS and TESS transits. The new data allowed us to improve its radius ($R_p = 2.517 \pm 0.045 R_{\oplus}$ from 5$\%$ to 2$\%$ precision) and mass ($M_p = 12.4 \pm 1.4 M_{\oplus}$) estimates, implying a density of $\rho_p = 0.778 \pm 0.097 \rho_{\oplus}$. Thanks to recent TESS observations and the focused CHEOPS visit of the transit of TOI-561 e, a good candidate for exomoon searches, the planet's period is finally constrained, allowing us to predict transit times through 2030 with 20-minute accuracy. We present an updated version of the internal structure of the four transiting planets. 9. Decoding how higher-order network interactions shape complex contagion dynamics

Abstract

Complex contagion models that involve contagion along higher-order structures, such as simplicial complexes and hypergraphs, yield new classes of mean-field models. Interestingly, the differential equations arising from many such models often exhibit a similar form, resulting in qualitatively comparable global bifurcation patterns. Motivated by this observation, we investigate a generalized mean-field-type model that provides a unified framework for analysing a range of different models. In particular, we derive analytical conditions for the emergence of different bifurcation regimes exhibited by three models of increasing complexity -- ranging from three- and four-body interactions to two connected populations with both pairwise and three-body interactions. For the first two cases, we give a complete characterisation of all possible outcomes, along with the corresponding conditions on network and epidemic parameters. In the third case, we demonstrate that multistability is possible despite only three-body interactions. Our results reveal that single population models with three-body interactions can only exhibit simple transcritical transitions or bistability, whereas with four-body interactions multistability with two distinct endemic steady states is possible. Surprisingly, the two-population model exhibits multistability via symmetry breaking despite three-body interactions only. Our work sheds light on the relationship between equation structure and model behaviour and makes the first step towards elucidating mechanisms by which different system behaviours arise, and how network and dynamic properties facilitate or hinder outcomes., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures

10. Towards a benchmark for quantum computers based on an iterated post-selective protocol

Abstract

Applying post selection in each step of an iterated protocol leads to sensitive quantum dynamics that may be utilized to test and benchmark current quantum computers. An example of this type of protocols was originally proposed for the task of matching an unknown quantum state to a reference state. We propose to employ the quantum state matching protocol for the purpose of testing and benchmarking quantum computers. In particular, we implement this scheme on freely available IBM superconducting quantum computers. By comparing measured values with the theoretical conditional probability of the single, final post-selected qubit, which is easy to calculate classically, we define a benchmark metric. Additionally, the standard deviation of the experimental results from their average serves as a secondary benchmark metric, characterizing fluctuations in the given device. A peculiar feature of the considered protocol is that there is a phase parameter of the initially prepared state, on which the resulting conditional probability should not depend. A careful analysis of the measured values indicates that its dependence on the initial phase can reveal useful information about coherent gate errors of the quantum device.

11. Statistics of topological defects across a phase transition in a superconducting quantum processor

Abstract

When a quantum phase transition is crossed within a finite time, critical slowing down disrupts adiabatic dynamics, resulting in the formation of topological defects. The average density of these defects scales with the quench rate, adhering to a universal power law as predicted by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM). In this study, we aim to investigate the counting statistics of kink density in the 1D transverse-field quantum Ising model. We demonstrate on a 20-qubit quantum processing unit, that higher-order cumulants follow a universal power law scaling as a function of the quench time. We also show the breakdown of the KZM mechanism for short quenches for finite-size systems. Tensor network simulations corroborate our quantum simulation results for bigger systems not in the asymptotic limit., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The notion of weak tiling was a key ingredient in the proof of Fuglede's spectral set conjecture for convex bodies \cite{conv}, due to the fact that every spectral set tiles its complement weakly with a suitable Borel measure. In this paper we review the concept of weak tiling, and answer a question raised in \cite{weak} by giving an example of a set $T$ which tiles its complement weakly, but $T$ is neither spectral, nor a proper tile.

Abstract

Hot Jupiters are giant planets subject to intense stellar radiation. The physical and chemical properties of their atmosphere makes them the most amenable targets for the atmospheric characterization. In this paper we analyze the photometry collected during the secondary eclipses of the hot Jupiter WASP-3 b by CHEOPS, TESS and Spitzer. Our aim is to characterize the atmosphere of the planet by measuring the secondary eclipse depth in several passbands and constrain the planetary dayside spectrum. Our update of the stellar and planetary properties is consistent with previous works. The analysis of the occultations returns an eclipse depth of 92+-21 ppm in the CHEOPS passband, 83+-27 ppm for TESS and >2000 ppm in the IRAC 1-2-4 Spitzer passbands. Using the eclipse depths in the Spitzer bands we propose a set of likely emission spectra which constrain the emission contribution in the \cheops and TESS passbands to approximately a few dozens of parts per million. This allowed us to measure a geometric albedo of 0.21+-0.07 in the CHEOPS passband, while the TESS data lead to a 95\% upper limit of $\sim$0.2. WASP-3 b belongs to the group of ultra-hot Jupiters which are characterized by low Bond albedo (<0.3+-0.1), as predicted by different atmospheric models. On the other hand, it unexpectedly seems to efficiently recirculate the absorbed stellar energy, unlike similar highly irradiated planets. To explain this inconsistency, we propose that other energy recirculation mechanisms may be at play other than advection (for example, dissociation and recombination of H_2). Another possibility is that the observations in different bandpasses probe different atmospheric layers, making the atmospheric analysis difficult without an appropriate modeling of the thermal emission spectrum of WASP-3 b, which is not feasible with the limited spectroscopic data available to date.

14. Modelling the age distribution of longevity leaders

Abstract

Human longevity leaders with remarkably long lifespan play a crucial role in the advancement of longevity research. In this paper, we propose a stochastic model to describe the evolution of the age of the oldest person in the world by a Markov process, in which we assume that the births of the individuals follow a Poisson process with increasing intensity, lifespans of individuals are independent and can be characterized by a gamma-Gompertz distribution with time-dependent parameters. We utilize a dataset of the world's oldest person title holders since 1955, and we compute the maximum likelihood estimate for the parameters iteratively by numerical integration. Based on our preliminary estimates, the model provides a good fit to the data and shows that the age of the oldest person alive increases over time in the future. The estimated parameters enable us to describe the distribution of the age of the record holder process at a future time point., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

K2-24 is a planetary system composed of two transiting low-density Neptunians locked in an almost perfect 2:1 resonance and showing large TTVs, i.e., an excellent laboratory to search for signatures of planetary migration. Previous studies performed with K2, Spitzer and RV data tentatively claimed a significant non-zero eccentricity for one or both planets, possibly high enough to challenge the scenario of pure disk migration through resonant capture. With 13 new CHEOPS light curves (seven of planet -b, six of planet -c), we carried out a global photometric and dynamical re-analysis by including all the available literature data as well. We got the most accurate set of planetary parameters to date for the K2-24 system, including radii and masses at 1% and 5% precision (now essentially limited by the uncertainty on stellar parameters) and non-zero eccentricities $e_b=0.0498_{-0.0018}^{+0.0011}$, $e_c=0.0282_{-0.0007}^{+0.0003}$ detected at very high significance for both planets. Such relatively large values imply the need for an additional physical mechanism of eccentricity excitation during or after the migration stage. Also, while the accuracy of the previous TTV model had drifted by up to 0.5 days at the current time, we constrained the orbital solution firmly enough to predict the forthcoming transits for the next ~15 years, thus enabling an efficient follow-up with top-level facilities such as JWST or ESPRESSO., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 8 tables. Abstract

The present paper aims to explore higher education students' spreadsheet competencies and reliability through self-assessment and real-world problem-solving practices. Digital natives alleged skills and competences allowed us to hypothesize that students perform better in Excel than on paper, but the findings cannot confirm this hypothesis. However, our results indicate that students tend to inaccurately assess their spreadsheet competencies compared to their actual performance in both paper-based and Excel tasks. It has also be found that students need at least twice as much time to achieve the same high scores in the digital environment as they do on paper. The results violated the widely accepted assumption that digital native students do not need computer science education, since they are born with it. The ranking of possible alternatives during the design or operation of an industrial process leads to the definition of a solution representing the best compromise between several contradictory objectives. The choice of solution is a decision that can be modeled using knowledge of the corresponding preferences. The decision and preference model used is that of flow balances. Changes in the brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and glucocorticoid receptor (GR) expression in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus (HIP) are associated with psychiatric diseases and stress response. Chronic mild stress (CMS) may alter BDNF as well as GR levels in both the PFC and the HIP. The aim of the present study was to find out whether chronic treatment with a typical antipsychotic haloperidol (HAL) and an atypical antipsychotic aripiprazole (ARI) may modify the CMS effect on the BDNF and GR expression in the above-mentioned structures.

Most typical data mining techniques are developed based on training the batch data which makes the task of mining the data stream represent a significant challenge. Abstract

Data stream processing has been gaining attention in the past decade. Apache Flink is an open-source distributed stream processing engine that is able to process a large amount of data in real time with low latency. Computations are distributed among a cluster of nodes. Currently, provisioning the appropriate amount of cloud resources must be done manually ahead of time. A dynamically varying workload may exceed the capacity of the cluster, or leave resources underutilized. In our paper, we describe an architecture that enables the automatic scaling of Flink jobs on Kubernetes based on custom metrics, and describe a simple scaling policy. We also measure the e ects of state size and target parallelism on the duration of the scaling operation, which must be considered when designing an autoscaling policy, so that the Flink job respects a Service Level Agreement.

The development of computer-generated ecosystem simulations are becoming more common due to the greater computational capabilities of machines. Because natural ecosystems are very complex, simplifications are required for implementation. This simulation environment o er a global view of the system and generate a lot of data to process and analyse, which are difficult or impossible to do in nature. 3D simulations, besides of the scientific advantages in experiments, can be used for presentation, educational and entertainment purposes too. In our simulated framework (Animal Farm) we have implemented a few basic animal behaviors and mechanics to observe in 3D. All animals are controlled by an individual logic model, which determines the next action of the animal, based on their needs and surrounding environment.

22. Validation and Psychometric Properties of the Sense of Coherence Scale in a Hungarian Child and Adolescent Sample

Abstract

Sense of coherence (SOC) is a relevant contributor and predictor of the individuals' mental and physical health. There are a number of studies about SOC, but only two validation articles of the sense of coherence scale (SOCS) were found on adolescents and none on children. The aim of this research was to validate the SOC scale in youth under 18. We hypothesized that younger children and children without psychiatric problems will have higher SOC than older ones, and children with psychiatric symptoms. We also wanted to examine the factor structure of both the 13 and the 29 item versions of the scale to study which is more valid in child and adolescent population. 199 children and 198 adolescents were included in the study; the mean age was 14.3 (SD 2.1) years. The sample included average youth from schools and youth under psychiatric treatment. Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and Inventory of Life Quality (ILK) were used for validation of the SOCS. SOCS-13 was applied to compare SOC of children and adolescents. Children had higher SOC than adolescents in both samples. Males had higher SOC than females in children but not in adolescents. It is apparent that the c-Fos and FosB/ΔFosB immunohistochemistry has generally become a useful tool for determining the different antipsychotic (AP) drugs activities in the brain. It is also noteworthy that there are no spatial limits, while to the extent of their identification over the whole brain axis. In addition, they can be in a parallel manner utilized in the unmasking of the brain cell phenotype character activated by APs and by this way also to identify the possible brain circuits underwent to the APs action. However, up to date, the number of APs involved in the extra-striatal studies is still limited, what prevents the possibility to fully understand their extra-striatal effects as a complex as well as differentiate their extra-striatal impact in qualitative and quantitative dimensions. Actually, it is very believable that more and more anatomical/functional knowledge might bring new insights into the APs extra-striatal actions by identifying new region-specific activities of APs as well as novel cellular targets affected by APs, which might reveal more details of their possible side effects of the extra-striatal origin.

Given the strong associations between diet and cancer risk, there is considerable scientific interest in determining whether dietary factors associated with prostate cancer cell implantation may influence epigenetic alternations. The aim of the research was to assess impact of selected trace elements (selenium, zinc and copper) on the kinetics of changes (10-13-14-21 week of life cycle of rats) in the level of 7-methylguanine, 3-methyladenine, 1-methylguanine and 8-oxo-guanine in the urine of rats with implanted prostate cancer cells (LNCaP). Modified nucleobases were determined by validated high performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method using multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. In the presented model the implantation of rats with cancer cells did not affect the level of the examined biomarkers in the rats’ urine. The level of methyl derivatives was statistically significantly reduced with the age of the examined rats. The implantation of rats with cancer cells results in the appearance of tumors in 71% of the rats obtaining the standard diet and respectively in 25% of those supplemented with selenium. Supplementation with selenium affects both the effectiveness of tumor induction and the concentration of 7-MeG, 3-MeA, 1-MeG and 8-oxoG in urine of the examined rats. These findings show that modified nucleosides can play an important role in cancer prevention.

Abstract

Apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I), the primary protein component of plasma high-density lipoproteins (HDL), is comprised of two structural regions, an N-terminal amphipathic α-helix bundle domain (residues 1-184) and a hydrophobic C-terminal domain (residues 185-243). When a recombinant fusion protein construct [bacterial pelB leader sequence - human apoA-I (1-243)] was expressed in Escherichia coli shaker flask cultures, apoA-I was recovered in the cell lysate. By contrast, when the C-terminal domain was deleted from the construct, large amounts of the truncated protein, apoA-I (1-184), were recovered in the culture medium. Consequently, following pelB leader sequence cleavage in the E. coli periplasmic space, apoA-I (1-184) was secreted from the bacteria. When the pelB-apoA-I (1-184) fusion construct was expressed in a 5 L bioreactor, substantial foam production (~30 L) occurred. Upon foam collection and collapse into a liquid foamate, SDS-PAGE revealed that apoA-I (1-184) was the sole major protein present. Incubation of apoA-I (1-184) with phospholipid vesicles yielded reconstituted HDL (rHDL) particles that were similar in size and cholesterol efflux capacity to those generated with full-length apoA-I. Mass spectrometry analysis confirmed that pelB leader sequence cleavage occurred and that foam fractionation did not result in unwanted protein modifications. The facile nature and scalability of bioreactor-based apolipoprotein foam fractionation provide a novel means to generate a versatile rHDL scaffold protein.

The constancy of nuclear decay rates can be investigated via long-duration precision measurements. It is still an open question whether any (annual) modulation can be observed. Long-lasting nuclear decay rate measurements have been the subject of considerable research effort. A decay rate measurement with a 137Cs source is currently being conducted 30 meters below the ground at the J\'anossy Underground Research Laboratory (JURLab, Csilleb\'erc, Hungary) utilizing a High-purity Germanium (HPGe) detector. The laboratory is the low-radiation-background part of the Vesztergombi High Energy Laboratory (VLAB) on the KFKI campus, Csilleb\'erc, Hungary. From October 2022 to April 2024, data of 18 months' worth have been collected, providing a new opportunity to look for variations in decay rates. Abstract

Like in many other research fields, recent developments in computational imaging have focused on developing machine learning (ML) approaches to tackle its main challenges. To improve the performance of computational imaging algorithms, machine learning methods are used for image processing tasks such as noise reduction. Generally, these ML methods heavily rely on the availability of high-quality data on which they are trained. This work explores the application of ML methods, specifically convolutional neural networks (CNNs), in the context of noise reduction for computed tomography (CT) imaging. We utilize a large 2D computed tomography dataset for machine learning to carry out for the first time a comprehensive study on the differences between the observed performances of algorithms trained on simulated noisy data and on real-world experimental noisy data. The study compares the performance of two common CNN architectures, U-Net and MSD-Net, that are trained and evaluated on both simulated and experimental noisy data. The results show that while sinogram denoising performed better with simulated noisy data if evaluated in the sinogram domain, the performance did not carry over to the reconstruction domain where training on experimental noisy data shows a higher performance in denoising experimental noisy data. Training the algorithms in an end-to-end fashion from sinogram to reconstruction significantly improved model performance, emphasizing the importance of matching raw measurement data to high-quality CT reconstructions. The study furthermore suggests the need for more sophisticated noise simulation approaches to bridge the gap between simulated and real-world data in CT image denoising applications and gives insights into the challenges and opportunities in leveraging simulated data for machine learning in computational imaging.

29. Performance of Higher-Order Networks in Reconstructing Sequential Paths: from Micro to Macro Scale

Activities such as the movement of passengers and goods, the transfer of physical or digital assets, web navigation and even successive passes in football, result in timestamped paths through a physical or virtual network. The need to analyse such paths has produced a new modelling paradigm in the form of higher-order networks which are able to capture temporal and topological characteristics of sequential data. This has been complemented by sequence mining approaches, a key example being sequential motifs measuring the prevalence of recurrent subsequences. Previous work on higher-order networks has focused on how to identify the optimal order for a path dataset, where the order can be thought of as the number of steps of memory encoded in the model. In this paper, we build on these approaches to consider which orders are necessary to reproduce different path characteristics, from path lengths to counts of sequential motifs, viewing paths generated from different higher-order models as null models which capture features of the data up to a certain order, and randomised otherwise. Furthermore, we provide an important extension to motif counting, whereby cases with self-loops, starting nodes, and ending nodes of paths are taken into consideration. Abstract

We report the spectroscopic confirmation and fundamental properties of TOI-757 b, a mini-Neptune on a 17.5-day orbit transiting a bright star ($V = 9.7$ mag) discovered by the TESS mission. We acquired high-precision radial velocity measurements with the HARPS, ESPRESSO, and PFS spectrographs to confirm the planet detection and determine its mass. We also acquired space-borne transit photometry with the CHEOPS space telescope to place stronger constraints on the planet radius, supported with ground-based LCOGT photometry. WASP and KELT photometry were used to help constrain the stellar rotation period. We also determined the fundamental parameters of the host star. We find that TOI-757 b has a radius of $R_{\mathrm{p}} = 2.5 \pm 0.1 R_{\oplus}$ and a mass of $M_{\mathrm{p}} = 10.5^{+2.2}_{-2.1} M_{\oplus}$, implying a bulk density of $\rho_{\text{p}} = 3.6 \pm 0.8$ g cm$^{-3}$. Our internal composition modeling was unable to constrain the composition of TOI-757 b, highlighting the importance of atmospheric observations for the system. We also find the planet to be highly eccentric with $e$ = 0.39$^{+0.08}_{-0.07}$, making it one of the very few highly eccentric planets among precisely characterized mini-Neptunes. Based on comparisons to other similar eccentric systems, we find a likely scenario for TOI-757 b's formation to be high eccentricity migration due to a distant outer companion. We additionally propose the possibility of a more intrinsic explanation for the high eccentricity due to star-star interactions during the earlier epoch of the Galactic disk formation, given the low metallicity and older age of TOI-757., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 26 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables

31. MIR laser CEP estimation using machine learning concepts in bulk high harmonic generation

Abstract

Monitoring the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) is of paramount importance for experiments involving few cycle intense laser fields. Common measurement techniques include f-2f interferometry or stereo-ATI setups. These approaches are adequate, but are challenging to implement on demand, at different locations as additional metrology tools, in intense few cycle laser-matter interaction experiments, such as those prevalent in sophisticated user beamlines. In addition there are inherent difficulties for CEP measured at non-conventional laser wavelengths (like e.g. mid infrared) and measurements above 10 kHz laser repetition rates, on single shot basis. Here we demonstrate both by simulations and by experiments a machine learning (ML) driven method for CEP estimation in the mid infrared, which is readily generalizable for any laser wavelength and possibly up to MHz repetition rates. The concept relies on the observation of the spectrum of high harmonic generation (HHG) in bulk material and the use of ML techniques to estimate the CEP of the laser. Once the ML model is trained, the method provides a way for cheap and compact real-time CEP tagging. This technique can complement the otherwise sophisticated monitoring of CEP, and is able to capture the complex correlation between the CEP and the observable HHG spectra.

Abstract

The PHENIX experiment measured the centrality dependence of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation functions in $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV Au$+$Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data are well represented by L\'evy-stable source distributions. The extracted source parameters are the correlation-strength parameter $\lambda$, the L\'evy index of stability $\alpha$, and the L\'evy-scale parameter $R$ as a function of transverse mass $m_T$ and centrality. The $\lambda(m_T)$ parameter is constant at larger values of $m_T$, but decreases as $m_T$ decreases. The L\'evy scale parameter $R(m_T)$ decreases with $m_T$ and exhibits proportionality to the length scale of the nuclear overlap region. The L\'evy exponent $\alpha(m_T)$ is independent of $m_T$ within uncertainties in each investigated centrality bin, but shows a clear centrality dependence. At all centralities, the L\'evy exponent $\alpha$ is significantly different from that of Gaussian ($\alpha=2$) or Cauchy ($\alpha=1$) source distributions. Comparisons to the predictions of Monte-Carlo simulations of resonance-decay chains show that in all but the most peripheral centrality class (50%-60%), the obtained results are inconsistent with the measurements, unless a significant reduction of the in-medium mass of the $\eta'$ meson is included. In each centrality class, the best value of the in-medium $\eta'$ mass is compared to the mass of the $\eta$ meson, as well as to several theoretical predictions that consider restoration of $U_A(1)$ symmetry in hot hadronic matter., Comment: 401 authors from 75 institutions, 20 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. Abstract

High-throughput screening, in which multiwell plates are used to test large numbers of compounds against specific targets, is widely used across many areas of the biological sciences and most prominently in drug discovery. We propose a statistically principled approach to these screening experiments, using the machinery of supersaturated designs and the Lasso. To accommodate limitations on the number of biological entities that can be applied to a single microplate well, we present a new class of row-constrained supersaturated designs. We develop a computational procedure to construct these designs, provide some initial lower bounds on the average squared off-diagonal values of their main-effects information matrix, and study the impact of the constraint on design quality. Abstract

Among the thousands of exoplanets discovered to date, approximately a few hundred gas giants on short-period orbits are classified as "lonely" and only a few are in a multi-planet system with a smaller companion on a close orbit. The processes that formed multi-planet systems hosting gas giants on close orbits are poorly understood, and only a few examples of this kind of system have been observed and well characterised. Within the contest of multi-planet system hosting gas-giant on short orbits, we characterise TOI-1130 system by measuring masses and orbital parameters. This is a 2-transiting planet system with a Jupiter-like planet (c) on a 8.35 days orbit and a Neptune-like planet (b) on an inner (4.07 days) orbit. Both planets show strong anti-correlated transit timing variations (TTVs). Furthermore, radial velocity (RV) analysis showed an additional linear trend, a possible hint of a non-transiting candidate planet on a far outer orbit. Since 2019, extensive transit and radial velocity observations of the TOI-1130 have been acquired using TESS and various ground-based facilities. We present a new photo-dynamical analysis of all available transit and RV data, with the addition of new CHEOPS and ASTEP+ data that achieve the best precision to date on the planetary radii and masses and on the timings of each transit. We were able to model interior structure of planet b constraining the presence of a gaseous envelope of H/He, while it was not possible to assess the possible water content. Furthermore, we analysed the resonant state of the two transiting planets, and we found that they lie just outside the resonant region. This could be the result of the tidal evolution that the system underwent. We obtained both masses of the planets with a precision less than 1.5%, and radii with a precision of about 1% and 3% for planet b and c, respectively., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication by Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract

Multiplanetary systems spanning the radius valley are ideal testing grounds for exploring the proposed explanations for the observed bimodality in the radius distribution of close-in exoplanets. One such system is HIP 29442 (TOI-469), an evolved K0V star hosting two super-Earths and a sub-Neptune. We observe HIP 29442 with CHEOPS for a total of 9.6 days, which we model jointly with 2 sectors of TESS data to derive planetary radii of $3.410\pm0.046$, $1.551\pm0.045$ and $1.538\pm0.049$ R$_\oplus$ for planets b, c and d, which orbit HIP 29442 with periods of 13.6, 3.5 and 6.4 days. For planet d, this value deviates by more than 3 sigma from the median value reported in the discovery paper, leading us to conclude that caution is required when using TESS photometry to determine the radii of small planets with low per-transit S/N and large gaps between observations. Given the high precision of these new radii, combining them with published RVs from ESPRESSO and HIRES provides us with ideal conditions to investigate the internal structure and formation pathways of the planets in the system. We introduce the publicly available code plaNETic, a fast and robust neural network-based Bayesian internal structure modelling framework. We then apply hydrodynamic models to explore the upper atmospheric properties of these inferred structures. Finally, we identify planetary system analogues in a synthetic population generated with the Bern model for planet formation and evolution. Based on this analysis, we find that the planets likely formed on opposing sides of the water iceline from a protoplanetary disk with an intermediate solid mass. We finally report that the observed parameters of the HIP 29442 system are compatible with both a scenario where the second peak in the bimodal radius distribution corresponds to sub-Neptunes with a pure H/He envelope as well as a scenario with water-rich sub-Neptunes., Comment: 30 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

Considering the increased workload in pathology laboratories today, automated tools such as artificial intelligence models can help pathologists with their tasks and ease the workload. In this paper, we are proposing a segmentation model (DRU-Net) that can provide a delineation of human non-small cell lung carcinomas and an augmentation method that can improve classification results. The proposed model is a fused combination of truncated pre-trained DenseNet201 and ResNet101V2 as a patch-wise classifier followed by a lightweight U-Net as a refinement model. We have used two datasets (Norwegian Lung Cancer Biobank and Haukeland University Hospital lung cancer cohort) to create our proposed model. The DRU-Net model achieves an average of 0.91 Dice similarity coefficient. The proposed spatial augmentation method (multi-lens distortion) improved the network performance by 3%. Our findings show that choosing image patches that specifically include regions of interest leads to better results for the patch-wise classifier compared to other sampling methods. The qualitative analysis showed that the DRU-Net model is generally successful in detecting the tumor. On the test set, some of the cases showed areas of false positive and false negative segmentation in the periphery, particularly in tumors with inflammatory and reactive changes., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Scientific Reports

37. Improved Bounds for Fully Dynamic Matching via Ordered Ruzsa-Szemeredi Graphs

Abstract

In a very recent breakthrough, Behnezhad and Ghafari [FOCS'24] developed a novel fully dynamic randomized algorithm for maintaining a $(1-\epsilon)$-approximation of maximum matching with amortized update time potentially much better than the trivial $O(n)$ update time. The runtime of the BG algorithm is parameterized via the following graph theoretical concept: * For any $n$, define $ORS(n)$ -- standing for Ordered RS Graph -- to be the largest number of edge-disjoint matchings $M_1,\ldots,M_t$ of size $\Theta(n)$ in an $n$-vertex graph such that for every $i \in [t]$, $M_i$ is an induced matching in the subgraph $M_{i} \cup M_{i+1} \cup \ldots \cup M_t$. Then, for any fixed $\epsilon > 0$, the BG algorithm runs in \[ O\left( \sqrt{n^{1+O(\epsilon)} \cdot ORS(n)} \right) \] amortized update time with high probability, even against an adaptive adversary. $ORS(n)$ is a close variant of a more well-known quantity regarding RS graphs (which require every matching to be induced regardless of the ordering). It is currently only known that $n^{o(1)} \leqslant ORS(n) \leqslant n^{1-o(1)}$, and closing this gap appears to be a notoriously challenging problem. In this work, we further strengthen the result of Behnezhad and Ghafari and push it to limit to obtain a randomized algorithm with amortized update time of \[ n^{o(1)} \cdot ORS(n) \] with high probability, even against an adaptive adversary. In the limit, i.e., if current lower bounds for $ORS(n) = n^{o(1)}$ are almost optimal, our algorithm achieves an $n^{o(1)}$ update time for $(1-\epsilon)$-approximation of maximum matching, almost fully resolving this fundamental question. Abstract

This paper introduces Deep HM-SORT, a novel online multi-object tracking algorithm specifically designed to enhance the tracking of athletes in sports scenarios. Traditional multi-object tracking methods often struggle with sports environments due to the similar appearances of players, irregular and unpredictable movements, and significant camera motion. Deep HM-SORT addresses these challenges by integrating deep features, harmonic mean, and Expansion IOU. By leveraging the harmonic mean, our method effectively balances appearance and motion cues, significantly reducing ID-swaps. Additionally, our approach retains all tracklets indefinitely, improving the re-identification of players who leave and re-enter the frame. Experimental results demonstrate that Deep HM-SORT achieves state-of-the-art performance on two large-scale public benchmarks, SportsMOT and SoccerNet Tracking Challenge 2023. Specifically, our method achieves 80.1 HOTA on the SportsMOT dataset and 85.4 HOTA on the SoccerNet-Tracking dataset, outperforming existing trackers in key metrics such as HOTA, IDF1, AssA, and MOTA. Abstract

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These results better quantify how the yield of low-$p_T$ associated hadrons is enhanced at wide angle, which is crucial for studying energy loss as well as medium-response effects., Comment: 535 authors from 84 institutions, 12 pages, 8 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review C. Abstract

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Abstract

In several processes of stellar nucleosynthesis, like the astrophysical gamma-process, nuclear reactions involving alpha particles play an important role. The description of these reactions necessitates the knowledge of the alpha-nucleus optical model potential (AOMP) which is highly ambiguous at low, astrophysical energies. This ambiguity introduces a substantial uncertainty in the stellar models for predicting elemental and isotopic abundances. The experimental study of the AOMP is thus necessary which can be implemented by measuring the cross section of alpha-induced nuclear reactions. At low energies, (a,n) reactions are suitable for such a purpose. Therefore, in the present work, the (a,n) cross sections of four Te isotopes have been measured, mostly for the first time, and compared with theoretical predictions. The (a,n) cross sections of 120,122,124,130Te have been measured in the energy range between about 10 and 17 MeV using the activation method. The detection of the gamma radiation following the decay of the radioactive reaction products were used to determine the cross sections. The measured cross sections are compared with statistical model calculations obtained from the widely used TALYS nuclear reaction simulation code. Predictions using various available AOMPs are investigated. It is found that the recently developed Atomki-V2 AOMP provides the best description for all studied reactions and this potential also reproduces well the total reaction cross sections from elastic scattering experiments, when they are available in literature. We recommend therefore to use the astrophysical reaction rates based on this potential for nucleosynthesis models of heavy elements., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. C

Abstract

CHEOPS is a space telescope specifically designed to monitor transiting exoplanets orbiting bright stars. In September 2023, CHEOPS completed its nominal mission and remains in excellent operational conditions. The mission has been extended until the end of 2026. Scientific and instrumental data have been collected throughout in-orbit commissioning and nominal operations, enabling a comprehensive analysis of the mission's performance. In this article, we present the results of this analysis with a twofold goal. First, we aim to inform the scientific community about the present status of the mission and what can be expected as the instrument ages. Secondly, we intend for this publication to serve as a legacy document for future missions, providing insights and lessons learned from the successful operation of CHEOPS. To evaluate the instrument performance in flight, we developed a comprehensive monitoring and characterisation programme. It consists of dedicated observations that allow us to characterise the instrument's response. In addition to the standard collection of nominal science and housekeeping data, these observations provide input for detecting, modelling, and correcting instrument systematics, discovering and addressing anomalies, and comparing the instrument's actual performance with expectations. The precision of the CHEOPS measurements has enabled the mission objectives to be met and exceeded. Careful modelling of the instrumental systematics allows the data quality to be significantly improved during the light curve analysis phase, resulting in more precise scientific measurements. CHEOPS is compliant with the driving scientific requirements of the mission. Abstract

One of the most studied aspect of complex graphs is identifying the most influential nodes. There are some local metrics like degree centrality, which is cost-effiective and easy to calculate, although using global metrics like betweenness centrality or closeness centrality can identify influential nodes more accurately, however calculating these values can be costly and each measure has it’s own limitations and disadvantages. There is an ever-growing interest in calculating such metrics in time-varying graphs (TVGs), since modern complex networks can be best modelled with such graphs. In this paper we are investigating the effectiveness of a new centrality measure called efficiency centrality in TVGs. To evaluate the performance of the algorithm Independent Cascade Model is used to simulate infection spreading in four real networks. To simulate the changes in the network we are deleting and adding nodes based on their degree centrality. We are investigating the Time-Constrained Coverage and the magnitude of propagation resulted by the use of the algorithm.

Abstract

Using software applications or services, which provide word or even word pattern recommendation service has become part of our lives. Those services appear in many form in our daily basis, just think of our smartphones keyboard, or Google search suggestions and this list can be continued. With the help of these tools, we can not only find the suitable word that fits into our sentence, but we can also express ourselves in a much more nuanced, diverse way. To achieve this kind of recommendation service, we use an algorithm which is capable to recommend word by word pattern queries. Word pattern queries, can be expressed as a combination of words, part-of-speech (POS) tags and wild card words. Since there are a lot of possible patterns and sentences, we use Big Data frameworks to handle this large amount of data. In this paper, we compared two popular framework Hadoop and Spark with the proposed algorithm and recommend some enhancement to gain faster word pattern generation.

Objective. Olanzapine (OLA), amisulpride (AMI), aripiprazole (ARI), and quetiapine (QUE) belong to antipsychotics, which administration represents still most reliable way for the treatment of schizophrenic and bipolar disorders. The intention of the present study was to explore whether the acute administration of a particular antipsychotic, indicated by the presence of c-Fos, will: a) stimulate neurons already activated by a long lasting homogeneous or heterogeneous stress preconditioning, indicated by the FosB/ΔFosB (ΔFosB) expression, or b) have a stimulatory effect only on a not activated, so called silent neurons. The pattern of ΔFosB and c-Fos spatial relationship was investigated in three forebrain structures, including the septal ventrolateral nucleus (seVL), the striatal dorsolateral area (stDL), and the shell of the nucleus accumbens (shell).

The goal of writing this article is to continue my previous empirical research (Kiss 2015). In the article written in 2015, I dealt with the question, what factors affect the value of the firm? Looking at the entire period (2004 through 2011) I found that all value creators had a significant impact on the dependent variable, on the value of the firm. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT), reinvestment, invested capital, return on invested capital, profit margin, sales growth rate had a positive impact on the value of the firm, while tax rate and return on assets at market value (MROA), had a negative impact. In this research I am seeking an answer if any changes occurred, when analysing the role of factors affecting the value of a business, in these factors and their importance, in the period under review. In my paper I present the primary objective of a firm, its possible approaches, while I shall also deal with the concept of dual value creation. Then I outline the dimensions of value, by reviewing the relationship of consumers’ value and shareholder value. Shareholder value is a relevant value category concerning the article, therefore I address its detailed characterization and firm theory background. The structure of the study is the following. First I review the value creation process based on literature from the most prominent academic authors. In the next part I describe the primary objective of a firm, then the various dimensions of value and the firm theory background of shareholder value. Then I move to the value creators, which I am going to use in the empirical study. Finally I introduce the research, and in the last part I formulate my conclusions.

48. Empowering First Graders with Computer-Based Training to Master Pre-Reading Skills and Bridge the Learning Gap

Abstract

The ability to read is fundamental in determining an individual's academic success and social integration, and it is also known to have an impact on other cognitive abilities. A lack of foundational pre-reading skills can accumulate later, causing reading and learning problems. Early diagnosis and development of these skills are therefore essential. Although the importance of early reading development has always been stressed, recent years have drawn increasing attention to the need for targeted improvement. We have addressed this need by developing a computer-based training program in pre-reading skills for first graders; the present paper presents the results of an intervention using this program. Participants in the quasi-experimental study were 336 first graders. To increase the validity of the results, propensity score matching was utilized to analyze the impact of the pre-reading skills program. As a result of the program, students' development in the intervention group significantly accelerated (Cohen's d = 0.59). An immense effect of the intervention was indicated among students in the lower third skill group (Cohen's d = 2.83). Latent-change analyses supported the relevance and importance of the development of phonological awareness at the ages of 6-8 and the generalizability of the results (X[superscript 2]= 14.9; df = 10; p < 0.05; CFI = 0.991; TLI = 0.989; RMSEA = 0.58 (CI: 0.000, 0.114). This research demonstrates that an effective computer-based program can effectively bridge the learning gap in pre-reading skills during early stages of education, even in challenging times without the direct involvement of a teacher.

As a continuation of the series about droughts in late medieval Hungary, we present, analyse and compare further cases, based on contemporary direct and indirect documentary source evidence. The data, concerning (potential) low water-level conditions in 1375, 1378, 1393-1394 and 1517, and the economic problems (and solutions) probably related to multiannual dry (spring, summer?) conditions, recorded in the 1410s and 1420s, are further compared to the recent tree-ring based hydroclimate reconstruction of the OWDA (Old World Drought Atlas). Whereas the cases in 1371, 1375, 1378, (1414-)1417 and 1427-1428 (and before) reflect on local-regional problems and also show some conflicts between documentary and tree-ring based reconstructions, in 1393 the local data and the potential Danube low water-level evidence mainly reflects on lower precipitation sums in Western Hungary and the Upper-Danube catchment. The 1517 case, however, presumably refers to large-scale drought problems in the Carpathian Basin and beyond. Beyond the case studies on individual years or multiannual periods, indirect indicators of drought and dry spells are discussed and main groups of most frequent (potential) indicators defined. Preceded by a hard winter, the year of Reformation stands out both in documentary and tree-ring evidence as an outstanding drought year, and has particular importance in the paper.

The aim of the present study was to demonstrate the spatial relationship between the c-Fos immunoreactive cells elicited by an acute treatment with neuroleptics including amisulpride (AMI), olanzapine (OLA), quetiapine (QUE), and aripiprazole (ARI) and enkephalinergic (ENK), substance P (SP), and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) innervation fields in the rat septum.
