Abstract

The X-ray cascade from antiprotonic atoms was studied for 208Pb and 209Bi. Widths and shifts of the levels due to the strong interaction were determined. Using modern antiproton-nucleus optical potentials the neutron densities in the nuclear periphery were deduced. Assuming two parameter Fermi distributions (2pF) describing the proton and neutron densities the neutron rms radii were deduced for both nuclei. The difference of neutron and proton rms radii /\r_np equal to 0.16 +-(0.02)_{stat} +- (0.04)_{syst} fm for 208Pb and 0.14 +- (0.04)_{stat} +- (0.04)_{syst} fm for 209Bi were determined and the assigned systematic errors are discussed. The /\r_np values and the deduced shapes of the neutron distributions are compared with mean field model calculations., Comment: 22 pages, 8 tables, 15 figures

Abstract

The x-ray cascade from antiprotonic atoms was studied for 106Cd, 116Cd, 112Sn, 116Sn, 120Sn, and 124Sn. Widths and shifts of the levels due to strong interaction were deduced. Isotopic effects in the Cd and Sn isotopes are clearly seen. The results are used to investigate the nucleon density in the nuclear periphery. The deduced neutron distributions are compared with the results of the previously introduced radiochemical method and with HFB calculations.

Background: The γ softness of 136Nd makes it possible to study the shape changes induced by two-proton or two-neutron excitation. Purpose: We measure the lifetimes of two-quasiparticle states of the bands based on the 10+ states at 3296 and 3279 keV to investigate the shape change induced by the alignment of two protons or two neutrons in the h11/2 orbital. Methods: The recoil-distance Doppler shift method was used for the study of 136Nd studies, which was formed by the fusion reaction 120Sn(20Ne, 4n)136Nd, at Ebeam = 85 MeV. Calculations were performed within the microscopic-macroscopic approach, based on the deformed Woods-Saxon single-particle potential and the Yukawa-plus-exponential macroscopic energy. Results: The lifetime of the 10+ state at 3279 keV of 136Nd was measured to be T 10+1/2 = 1.63(9) ns. The lifetimes of the 2+ state at 374 keV and of the 12+ state at 3686 keV of the ground band were also measured to be T 2+1/2 = 26.5(14) ps and T 12+1/2 = 22.5(14) ps. Conclusions: The measured lifetime of 10+ the state at 3279 keV together with other observables confirm the structure change in 136Nd. A rather small reduced hindrance of the electromagnetic decay of the 10+ state at 3279 keV would be consistent with its K-mixed character.

Abstract

The barrier distributions for the 20Ne+58,60,61Ni systems were experimentally determined. In the 58Ni case one observes a distinct “structure” in the distribution (two peaks) which is partially damped for 60Ni and completely smoothed out for 61Ni. It seems that smoothing is caused by non-collective excitations of the target nuclei.

Abstract

International audience; The g factor of the 56 ns half-life isomeric state in $^{128}$Cs has been measured using the time-differential perturbed angular distribution method. This state is the bandhead of the positive-parity chiral rotational band, which emerges when an unpaired proton, an unpaired neutron hole, and an even-even core are coupled such that their angular momentum vectors are aplanar (chiral configuration). g-factor measurements can give important information on the relative orientation of the three angular momentum vectors. The measured g factor g=+0.59(1) shows that there is an important contribution of the core rotation in the total angular momentum of the isomeric state. Moreover, a quantitative theoretical analysis supports the conclusion that the three angular momentum vectors lie almost in one plane, which suggests that the chiral configuration in $^{128}$Cs demonstrated in previous works by characteristic patterns of electromagnetic transitions appears only above some value of the total nuclear spin.

Abstract

20 pags., 12 figs., 14 tabs., A Coulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of Ca42 was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. γ rays from excited states in Ca42 were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in Ca42, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 21+ and 22+ states, were determined using the least-squares code gosia. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 01,2+ and 21,2+ states, as well as triaxiality for 01,2+ states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca42. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in Ca42., K.H.-K. acknowledges support from the Research Council of Norway under Grant No. 213442. Abstract

International audience; In the region around 132Sn, the structure of even-even nuclei demonstrates diverse phenomenon including the transition between some typical quadrupole collective states. The doubly magic isotopic chain of Sn-isotopes seems to be the most interesting mass-region to be studied. Several theoretical and experimental studies have been focused in this mass region, recently [1]. The low-lying spectroscopy of these nuclei is one of the most powerful sources of information about nuclear shapes and shape transitions. Experimental/adopted B(E2↑) values for this mass-region are depicted in Fig. 1.

Abstract

International audience; The properties of the K-isomer decays in the 134 Nd and 184 Pt nuclei have been investigated. Measurements were carried out in e-γ and γ-γ coincidence modes using electron spectrometers coupled to the central European Array for Gamma Levels Evaluations at the Heavy Ion Laboratory of the University of Warsaw. Internal conversion coefficients were obtained for transitions relevant to the decay of the isomeric states, allowing the determination of multipolarities and mixing ratios as well as hindrance factors. Two possible causes of the weakening of the K forbiddenness, namely rotational K mixing (Coriolis interaction) and triaxiality, are briefly discussed using schematic theoretical models.

Abstract

Background: It was suggested that the shape of the barrier height distribution can be determined not only by strong reaction channels (collective excitations) but also by weak channels such as transfers and/or noncollective excitations. Purpose: The study of the barrier height distributions for the 20Ne + 58,60,61Ni systems requires information on transfer cross sections at near-barrier energies. Methods: A measurement of the cross sections for various transfer channels at a backward angle (142 degrees), at a near-barrier energy was performed. Identification of products was based on time-of-flight and E-E methods. A measurement of the angular distribution of α stripping in the 20Ne + 61Ni system was performed using a gas E-E telescope. Results: For all three systems studied: 20Ne + 58Ni, 60Ni, and 61Ni total (sum of all transfer channels) cross sections are similar and dominated by α stripping. Conclusions: The results, as well as coupled reaction channel calculations, suggest that transfer is not responsible for smoothing the barrier height distribution in 20Ne + 61Ni, supporting the hypothesis that barrier distribution shapes are influenced by noncollective excitations. peerReviewed

Abstract

The last stable tellurium nucleus on the neutron-deficient side, 120Te, was Coulomb excited using two different projectiles. The low-lying collective states were populated in a multi-step Coulomb excitation process. Magnitudes and relative signs of the reduced E2 matrix elements were determined using the GOSIA code. The resulting set of E2 matrix elements was analysed using the quadrupole sum rules approach to determine the quadrupole deformation parameters for the 0+1 and 2+1states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Excited states of the Tb146 nucleus have been studied using γ-ray and electron spectroscopy in off-beam and in-beam modes following Sn112(Ar40,3n3p) reaction with the use of the OSIRIS-II, HPGe detector array and the conversion electron spectrometer. The multipolarity of the 343 keV transition deexciting the (7−) level in Tb146 shows mainly an E2 nature and the first excited state above the 23 s isomer is assigned as a (5−,6−) state. The log ft values have been deduced for 11 β+/EC transitions populating excited states in Gd146. The systematic behavior of spins and parities of the long-lived levels at 0+x keV and the first excited states above them in the N=81 isotones Tb146, Ho148, and Tm150 is discussed

Abstract

The excited states of Ho148 and Ho149 isotopes are studied using γ-ray and electron spectroscopy in off-beam and in-beam modes following Sn112,114(Ar40,xnyp) reactions. Experiments include measurements of single γ-rays and conversion electron spectra as well as γ-γ, electron-γ, γ−t, and γ−γ−t coincidences with the use of the OSIRIS-II 12-HPGe array and conversion electron spectrometer. Based on the present results, the level schemes of Ho148 and Ho149 are revised and significantly extended, up to about 4 and 5 MeV of excitation energy, respectively. Spin and parity of 5− are assigned to the 9.59-s isomer in Ho148 based on conversion electron results. Previously unobserved γ rays feeding the 10+ isomer in Ho148 and the 27/2− isomer in Ho149 nuclei are proposed. Shell-model calculations are performed. Possible core-excited states in Ho149 are discussed.

Abstract

To determine the shape of 132Ba Coulomb excitation measurement has been performed at U-200P cyclotron at Heavy Ion Laboratory, University of Warsaw, Poland. A 32S beam of ~90 MeV energy has been bombarded on enriched 132Ba-target to Coulomb excite the latter nuclei. EAGLE gamma-ray spectrometer consisting of 15 single crystal HPGe detectors has been used to detect the deexcited gamma-rays from Coulomb excited Ba nuclei. The data has been collected using Particle-gamma coincidence technique for a period of seven days. The back scattered projectiles have been identified with 48 PiN diodes of 0.5 X 0.5 cm² active area mounted in a scattering chamber of ~5 cm radius called as ‘Munich chamber’. The energy states up to ~1127 keV energy have been populated in the interested 132Ba isotope. The preliminary results of the data analysis are presented here. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
