The measurement of muon momentum by Multiple Coulomb Scattering is a crucial ingredient to the reconstruction of {\nu}{\mu} CC events in the ICARUS-T600 liquid argon TPC in absence of magnetic field, as in the search for sterile neutrinos at Fermilab where ICARUS will be exposed to ~1 GeV Booster neutrino beam. A sample of ~1000 stopping muons produced by charged current interactions of CNGS {\nu}{\mu} in the surrounding rock at the INFN Gran Sasso underground Laboratory provides an ideal benchmark in the few-GeV range since their momentum can be directly and independently obtained by the calorimetric measurement. Stopping muon momentum in the 0.5- 4.5 GeV/c range has been reconstructed via Multiple Coulomb Scattering with resolution ranging from 10 to 25 % depending on muon energy, track length and uniformity of the electric field in the drift volume., Comment: 20 pages, 20 figures

We report measurements of the flux-integrated ν̄μ and ν̄μ + νμ charged-current crosssections on water and hydrocarbon targets using the T2K anti-neutrino beam, with a mean beam energy of 0.86 GeV. The signal is defined as the (anti-) neutrino chargedcurrent interaction with one induced μ } and no detected charged pion nor proton. These measurements are performed using a new WAGASCI module recently added to the T2K setup in combination with the INGRID Proton module. The phase space of muons is restricted to the high-detection efficiency region, pμ > 400 MeV/c and θμ < 30◦, in the laboratory frame. Absence of pions and protons in the detectable phase space of “pπ > 200 MeV/c and θπ < 70◦”, and “pp > 600 MeV/c and θp < 70◦” is required. In this paper, both of the ν̄μ cross-sections and ν̄μ + νμ cross-sections on water and hydrocarbon targets, and their ratios are provided by using the D’Agostini unfolding method. The results of the integrated ν̄μ cross-section measurements over this phase space are σH2O = (1.082 ± 0.068(stat.)+0.145 −0.128(syst.)) × 10−39 cm2/nucleon, σCH = (1.096 ± 0.054(stat.)+0.132 −0.117(syst.)) × 10−39 cm2/nucleon, and σH2O/σCH = 0.987 ± 0.078(stat.)+0.093 −0.090(syst.). The ν̄μ + νμ cross-section is σH2O = (1.155 ± 0.064(stat.)+0.148 −0.129(syst.)) × 10−39 cm2/nucleon, σCH = (1.159 ± 0.049(stat.) +0.129 −0.115(syst.)) × 10−39 cm2/nucleon, and σH2O/σCH = 0.996 ± 0.069(stat.)+0.083 −0.078(syst.).

Zsoldos, This paper reports the first T2K measurement of the transverse kinematic imbalance in the single-πþ production channel of neutrino interactions. We measure the differential cross sections in the muon-neutrino charged-current interaction on hydrocarbon with a single πþ and at least one proton in the final state, at the ND280 off axis near detector of the T2K experiment. The extracted cross sections are compared to the predictions from different neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators. Overall, the results show a preference for models that have a more realistic treatment of nuclear medium effects including the initial nuclear state and final-state interactions.

Zsoldos, The T2K experiment reports updated measurements of neutrino and antineutrino oscillations using both appearance and disappearance channels. This result comes from an exposure of 14.9ð16.4Þ × 1020 protons on target in neutrino (antineutrino) mode. Significant improvements have been made to the neutrino interaction model and far detector reconstruction. An extensive set of simulated data studies have also been performed to quantify the effect interaction model uncertainties have on the T2K oscillation parameter sensitivity. T2K performs multiple oscillation analyses that present both frequentist and Bayesian intervals for the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata parameters. For fits including a constraint on sin2θ13 from reactor data and assuming normal mass ordering T2K measures sin2θ23 ¼ 0.53þ0.03 −0.04 and Δm2 32 ¼ ð2.45 0.07Þ × 10−3 eV2 c−4. The Bayesian analyses show a weak preference for normal mass ordering 89)% posterior probability) and the upper sin2 θ23 octant (80% posterior probability), with a uniform prior probability assumed in both cases. The T2K data exclude CP conservation in neutrino oscillations at the 2σ level.

The analysis uses data control samples for the background subtraction and the cross section signal, defined as a single negatively charged muon and a single positively charged pion exiting from the target nucleus, is extracted using an unfolding method. The model-dependent cross section, integrated over the T2K off-axis neutrino beam spectrum peaking at 0.6 GeV, is measured to be σ ¼ ð11.76 0.44ðstatÞ 2.39ðsystÞÞ × 10−40 cm2 nucleon−1. Various differential cross sections are measured, including the first measurement of the Adler angles for single charged pion production in neutrino interactions with heavy nuclei target.

This paper reports the first differential measurement of the charged-current ¯νμ interaction cross section on water with no pions in the final state. The unfolded flux-averaged measurement using the T2K off-axis near detector is given in double-differential bins of μþ momentum and angle. The integrated cross section in a restricted phase space is σ ¼ ð1.11 0.18Þ × 10−38 cm2 per water molecule. Comparisons with several nuclear models are also presented.

Baltic Sea Region ,Baltic Sea Underground Innovation Network - Abstract
Baltic Sea Underground Innovation Network (BSUIN) is an European Union funded project that extends capabilities of underground laboratories. The aim of the project is to join efforts in making the underground laboratories in the Baltic Sea Region’s more accessible for innovation, business development and science by improving the availability of information about the underground facilities, service offerings, user experience, safety and marketing. The development of standards for the characterization of underground laboratories will allow to compared them with each other. This will help you choose the best places for physical measurements such as neutrino physics or searching for dark matter. The project concerns laboratories where so far no measurements have been made, and even undergrounds where there are no organized laboratories yet.The description of the BSUIN project and the first results of characterization of natural radioactive background in underground laboratories will be presented ˙ The BSUIN Project is funded by Interreg Baltic Sea funding cooperation [2].

The T2K experiment measures muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance in accelerator-produced neutrino and antineutrino beams. With an exposure of 14.7ð7.6Þ × 1020 protons on target in the neutrino (antineutrino) mode, 89 νe candidates and seven anti-νe candidates are observed, while 67.5 and 9.0 are expected for δCP ¼ 0 and normal mass ordering. The obtained 2σ confidence interval for the CP-violating phase, δCP, does not include the CP-conserving cases (δCP ¼ 0, π). The bestfit values of other parameters are sin2 θ23¼ 0.526þ0.032−0.036 and Δm232¼ 2.463þ0.071−0.070 × 10−3 eV2=c4.

Results on two-particle ΔηΔϕ correlations in inelastic p + p interactions at 20, 31, 40, 80, and 158 GeV/c are presented. The measurements were performed using the large acceptance NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The data show structures which can be attributed mainly to effects of resonance decays, momentum conservation, and quantum statistics. The results are compared with the Epos and UrQMD models., The European Physical Journal C, 77 (2), ISSN:1434-6044, ISSN:1434-6052

Measurements of particle emission from a replica of the T2K 90 cm-long carbon target were performed in the NA61/SHINE experiment at CERN SPS, using data collected during a high-statistics run in 2009. An efficient use of the long-target measurements for neutrino flux predictions in T2K requires dedicated reconstruction and analysis techniques. Fully-corrected differential yields of π±-mesons from the surface of the T2K replica target for incoming 31 GeV/c protons are presented. A possible strategy to implement these results into the T2K neutrino beam predictions is discussed and the propagation of the uncertainties of these results to the final neutrino flux is performed.

Measurements of hadron production in p + C interactions at 31 GeV/c are performed using the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The analysis is based on the full set of data collected in 2009 using a graphite target with a thickness of 4 % of a nuclear interaction length. Inelastic and production cross sections as well as spectra of (Formula presented.) , (Formula presented.) , p, (Formula presented.) and (Formula presented.) are measured with high precision. These measurements are essential for improved calculations of the initial neutrino fluxes in the T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. A comparison of the NA61/SHINE measurements with predictions of several hadroproduction models is presented.

Inclusive production of {n-ary logical and}-hyperons was measured with the large acceptance NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS in inelastic p+p interactions at beam momentum of 158GeV/c. Spectra of transverse momentum and transverse mass as well as distributions of rapidity and xF are presented. The mean multiplicity was estimated to be 0.120ï+/-0.006 (stat.) +/-0.010 (sys.). The results are compared with previous measurements and predictions of the Epos, Urqmd and Fritiof models.

neutrinos ,cross sections ,neutrino scattering - Abstract
This paper reports a measurement by the T2K experiment of the νμ charged current quasielastic (CCQE) cross section on a carbon target with the off-axis detector based on the observed distribution of muon momentum (pμ) and angle with respect to the incident neutrino beam (θμ). The flux-integrated CCQE cross section was measured to be hσi ¼ ð0.83 0.12Þ × 10−38 cm2. The energy dependence of the CCQE cross section is also reported. The axial mass, MQE A , of the dipole axial form factor was extracted assuming the Smith-Moniz CCQE model with a relativistic Fermi gas nuclear model. Using the absolute (shape-only) pμ- cos θμ distribution, the effective MQE A parameter was measured to be 1.26þ0.21−0.18GeV=c2(1.43þ0.28−0.22 GeV=c2).

We present experimental results on inclusive spectra and mean multiplicities of negatively charged pions produced in inelastic p+p interactions at incident projectile momenta of 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c (s= 6.3, 7.7, 8.8, 12.3 and 17.3 GeV, respectively). The measurements were performed using the large acceptance NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN super proton synchrotron. Two-dimensional spectra are determined in terms of rapidity and transverse momentum. Their properties such as the width of rapidity distributions and the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra are extracted and their collision energy dependences are presented. The results on inelastic p+p interactions are compared with the corresponding data on central Pb+Pb collisions measured by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. The results presented in this paper are part of the NA61/SHINE ion program devoted to the study of the properties of the onset of deconfinement and search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter. They are required for interpretation of results on nucleus–nucleus and proton–nucleus collisions.

The ICARUS T600 detector, the largest liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr-TPC) realized after many years of RD activities, was installed and successfully operated for 3 years at the INFN Gran Sasso underground Laboratory. One of the most important issues was the need of an extremely low residual electronegative impurity content in the liquid Argon, in order to transport the free electrons created by the ionizing particles with a very small attenuation along the drift path. The solutions adopted for the Argon re-circulation and purification systems have permitted to reach impressive results in terms of Argon purity and a free electron lifetime exceeding 15 ms, corresponding to about 20 parts per trillion of equivalent O2 contamination, a milestone for any future project involving LAr-TPC's and the development of higher detector mass scales., Comment: to be submitted to JINST, LaTeX version

- Abstract
The OPERA Collaboration (2011) [1] has reported evidence of superluminal νμ propagation between CERN and the LNGS. Cohen and Glashow (2011) [2] argued that such neutrinos should lose energy by producing photons and e+e- pairs, through Z(0) mediated processes analogous to Cherenkov radiation. In terms of the parameter δ≡(vν2-vc2)/vc2, the OPERA result corresponds to δ≈5 . 10(-5). For this value (note that (vν-vc)/vc≈δ2≈2.5 . 10(-5)) of δ, a very significant deformation of the neutrino energy spectrum and an abundant production of photons and e+e- pairs should be observed at LNGS. We present an analysis based on the 2010 and part of the 2011 data sets from the ICARUS experiment, located at Gran Sasso National Laboratory and using the same neutrino beam from CERN. We find that the rates and deposited energy distributions of neutrino events in ICARUS agree with the expectations for an unperturbed spectrum of the CERN neutrino beam, as also reported by OPERA. Our results therefore refute a superluminal interpretation of the OPERA result according to the Cohen and Glashow (2011) prediction [2] for a weak current analog to Cherenkov radiation. In a dedicated search, no superluminal Cherenkov-like e+e- pair or γ emission event has been directly observed inside the fiducial volume of the “bubble chamber-like” ICARUS TPC-LAr detector, setting the much stricter limit of δ < 2.5 . 10(-8) at the 90% confidence level, comparable with the one due to the observations from the SN1987a (M.J. Longo, 1987 [4]). The observations of high energy neutrino events by Super-Kamiokande and IceCube are also pointing to a much stricter limit on δ.

The calculations of heavy-ion fusion cross sections in the above and sub-barrier regions are presented. A barrier penetration model with matrix method for the calculations of transmission coefficients through real one-dimensional barrier of nucleus-nucleus potential is used. The renormalization parameter Ns of Satchler-Love M3Y nuclear potential and critical radius Rei are the two parameters of the model. A very good description of the experimental fusion cross sections for fp-shell colliding ions was obtained for the full measured energy range. It was found that both parameters Ns and reduced critical radius r„ are very similar for all systems considered and are-energy independent.

Spectroscopic amplitudes for separation of six-nucleon clusters in low-lying states corresponding to the (ls)4(lp)2 shell-model configuration were calculated for lp-shell nuclei. The calculations were performed with the aid of intermediate-coupling model wave functions. The selectivity in excitation of the states produced in six-nucleon cluster transfer reactions with lp-shell nuclei is discussed. Sum rules for six-nucleon pickup and stripping are given.

Spectroscopic amplitudes are calculated for a transfer o f two nucleons in the (S ,T = 1,0) and (0,1) states between low-lying, normal parity states of lp-shell nuclei. Calculations are performed with the intermediate-coupling model wavefunctions of nuclei considered. The wavefunctions were generated using the interaction parameters of Cohen and Kurath. These spectroscopic amplitudes are necessary for a description of two-nucleon transfer in one of intermediate steps of the multi-step sequential transfer process. Sum rules for the calculated spectroscopic amplitudes are given.

Recent measurements at the T2K experiment indicate that CP violation in neutrino mixing may be observed in the future by long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. We explore the physics program of an extension to the currently approved T2K running of $7.8\times 10^{21}$ protons-on-target to $20\times 10^{21}$ protons-on-target,aiming at initial observation of CP violation with 3$\,\sigma$ or higher significance for the case of maximum CP violation. With accelerator and beam line upgrades, as well as analysis improvements, this program would occur before the next generation of long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments that are expected to start operation in 2026., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Recent measurements by the T2K neutrino oscillation experiment indicate that CP violation in neutrino mixing may be observed in the future by long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. We propose an extension to the currently approved T2K running from $7.8\times 10^{21}~\mbox{POT}$ to $20\times 10^{21}~\mbox{POT}$, aiming at initial observation of CP violation with 3$\,\sigma$ or higher significance for the case of maximum CP violation. The program also contains a measurement of mixing parameters, $\theta_{23}$ and $\Delta m^2_{32}$, with a precision of 1.7$^\circ$ or better and 1%, respectively. With accelerator and beamline upgrades, as well as analysis improvements, this program would occur before the next generation of long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments that are expected to start operation in 2026., Comment: 68 pages, 31 figures

The main purpose of this thesis is to explore the opportunities which would be provided by the Sieroszowice Underground Laboratory SUNLAB, located in the Polkowice-Sieroszowice mine in the Lower Silesia province in Poland, to discover the CP violation in the neutrino sector. This discovery would be a milestone on the road to understanding the observed dominance of matter over antimatter in the Universe, which is one of the fundamental questions of contemporary science. The motivation for the presented study is the current very exciting situation in neutrino physics. According to many physicists, the discovery of neutrino oscillations in the years 1998-2002 and their interpretation within the framework of three neutrino flavour mixing, awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in physics, provides firm evidence for new physics beyond the Standard Model. Recently, the θ13 mixing angle has been determined to be moderately large. This makes it possible to use conventional high power neutrino beams in accelerator long baseline experiments to answer the remaining questions in neutrino oscillations, which are the neutrino mass hierarchy and the measurement of the CP-violating phase.

The aim of the thesis is the study of the electromagnetic showers and neutral mesons in the ICARUS T600 Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber. To accurately reconstruct energy of electromagnetic showers, different corrections to the collected charge are needed. In this thesis the author calibrated the energy reconstruction with a set of corrections, most of which are not present in the official ICARUS reconstruction software. For this goal, the simulation package FLUKA was extensively used in order to study the ionization quenching and the shower containment in the detector. As a result the reconstructed invariant ⇡0 masses are distributed compactly (" = 12 MeV/c2) with a best value equal to 134.5 ± 1.5 ± 4.2 MeV/c2. Moreover, other results on low energy electromagnetic showers in Liquid Argon were found which include the longitudinal profile parametrization, the conversion distance measurement and the ionization losses for 1 and 2 m.i.p. particles. This latest point is interesting for the e CC events selection from ⌫μ NC background.
