Abstract

ABSTRACTIncreasing wastewater pollution owing to the briskly rising human population, rapid industrialization, and fast urbanization has necessitated highly efficient wastewater treatment technologies. Although several methods of wastewater treatments are in practice, expensiveness, use of noxious chemicals, generation of unsafe by-products, and longer time consumption restrain their use to a great extent. Over the last few decades, nanotechnological wastewater treatment approaches have received widespread recognition globally. Microbially fabricated nanoparticles reduce the utilization of reducing, capping, and stabilizing agents, and exhibit higher adsorptive and catalytic efficiency than chemically synthesized nanomaterials. The present review comprehensively summarizes the applications of microbial nanotechnology in the removal of a wide range of noxious wastewater pollutants. Moreover, prospects and challenges associated with the integration of nanotechnology with other biological treatment technologies including algal-membrane bioreactor, aerobic digestion, microbial fuel cells, and microbial nanofiber webs have also been briefly discussed.

23. Therapeutic applications of CRISPR-Cas9 in diabetes mellitus: a perspective review.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an excessively widespread condition resulting as a consequence of either autoimmune-mediated dysfunction of the pancreatic P-cells and abolishment of insulin production (Type I DM; T1DM), or deficient insulin production and irresponsiveness of cells to it (type II DM; T2DM). Either ways, the result is elevated blood glucose levels or hyperglycemia, the characteristic feature of DM. Tremendous efforts and resources have been spent in deciphering effective therapies/treatments against DM. In spite of hard-earned successes, the problems associated with DM still persist, warranting the need for exploration, development and application of novel dimensions in our quest for controlling this serious problem. Recent years have seen the emergence of promising genetic manipulation technologies, the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRIsPR) associated nucleases Cas being one of them. CRIsPR-Cas9 technology has the potential to revolutionize and accelerate the gene editing-based therapies in the clinical practice. It can be fine-tuned for direct modification of specific genome sites in target cells, opening up the possibility for rectifying cellular and metabolic defects associated with diseases such as DM. For instance, genes (e.g., octamer-binding transcription factor 4; OCT 4 and pancreatic duodenal homeobox 1; PDX 1) involved in the differentiation pathway of human P-cells can be identified and amended in transplantable pluripotent stem cells. The present perspective review summarizes the recent experimental successes in cellular and animal models for the utilization of the CRIsPR-Cas9 technology in DM research. Further, we conclude with a discussion regarding the critical shortcomings of this technology and suggest means to circumvent these, with the expectation that this review will serve as a relevant and timely research platform aiding global research for further identification of novel and efficient CRISPR-Cas9- based anti-DM treatment strategies. Abstract

In the past few years, microalgae have gained huge recognition from the scientific community due to their potential applications in the production of a broad array of bio‐based products varying from biofuels to nanoparticles. Due to their elevated growth rate, high tolerance to various types of abiotic stresses, and complex metabolic capacity, microalgae can be used as promising tools for the attainment of a circular bioeconomy. Moreover, they can simply utilize nutrients from wastewater for biorefinery purposes, resulting in resource recovery coupled with wastewater treatment. However, due to their sub‐optimal yields and high production costs, microalgae‐based bio‐products have not yet been commercialized. This review provides insights into the employment of microalgae as an efficient bioresource for the treatment of wastewater with simultaneous enactment as a biorefinery to produce biofuels, biochar, bioplastic, fertilizers, and other high‐value bioproducts. Furthermore, the application of microalgal nanoparticles in wastewater treatment and prospects for genetic modification of microalgae for enhanced biorefinery capabilities have also been briefly highlighted.
