13. Intergenerational Work Based on the Gakusha Yugo Concept: A Japanese Approach for Uniting School and Community.

Abstract

Japan's educational policy has encouraged efforts to integrate lifelong learning education into a variety of community settings, including schools. However, such integrated practices have been scarcely carried out throughout Japan. Gakusha yugo (unity of schools and community) is a concept that has emerged from experimental practices in the Akitsu community in Narasino City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Activities based on the Gakusha yugo concept are intergenerational in nature insofar as there is an integration of the elementary school curriculum with lifelong learning pursuits for adults in the community. There is also an emphasis on engaging adults and children together in meaningful activities for community development. This article explains the Gakusha yugo concept and introduces the model established in the Akitsu community. The history, contents and effects of the “Akitsu Model” are described, and implications for the future development of the Gakusha yugo concept and practices are considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Biporous (macro- and microporous) calcium phosphate gains much attention as a bone substitute material because of its large surface area and that it improves cell penetration In the present study, we evaluated the feasibility of biporous, low-crystalline apatite hosed on dissolution of mannitol from self setting apatite cement (Biopex®). Mannitol known as a biocompatible, easily dissolved monosaccharide alcohol -- was recrystallized to obtain larger crystals. It was crushed with pestle and mortar, sieved to obtain crystals which passed through a 500-µm mesh but which remained against a 300-µm mesh, and then used as porogen. Although Biopex® containing 60 wt% mannitol was not able to be taken out of the mold, addition of mannitol caused no initial setting inhibition to Biopex® if the amount was 40 wt% or less. Similarly, transformation to apatitic product was confirmed when the apatite cement was immersed in 0.9% saline kept at 37°C for seven days The set mass became low crystalline, hiporous apatite with approximately 60% porosity. 15. Characterization of Fe3Si/Si Schottky Contact for Future Spin-Transistor

Abstract

The electrical characteristics of epitaxially grown Fe3Si/Si structures were investigated. From the I-V and C-V measurements, excellent Schottky barrier characteristics (n=1.0, phn=0.62eV) were demonstrated. Moreover, the electrical characteristics did not deteriorate after post-annealing (400oC, 1h), which guaranteed the thermal stability of Fe3Si/Si structures up to 400oC.

20. Acute renal failure associated with acute non-fulminant hepatitis B.

Abstract

A 38-year-old female presenting with a high fever of 39 °C developed severe liver dysfunction and acute renal failure (ARF). In tests for a hepatitis associated virus, an Immunoglobulin M-anti-hepatitis B virus core antibody was the only positive finding. Moreover, the progression of ARF coincided with the pole period of liver damage and all the other assumed causes for the ARF were unlikely. Therefore, this case was diagnosed as ARF caused by acute hepatitis B. ARF associated with non-fulminant hepatitis has been infrequently reported, usually in association with acute hepatitis A. This case is considered to be an extremely rare and interesting case.
