The hypolipidemic effects of induracin, a new long-acting nicotinic acid dosage form based on the waxy matrix, and its tolerance were studied in 31 patients with Types IIa and IIb hyperlipoproteinemias in a 6-month blind crossover study. There were decreases in the levels of total cholesterol by 9-13% and low density lipoprotein cholesterol by 12-22%, an increase in high density lipoprotein cholesterol by 12-15%, and a good dynamics in the ratio of blood lipid-transport proteins--a 12-16% increase to the levels of apoprotein AI to a 29% decrease in those of apoprotein B. The drug is well tolerated by patients and may be recommended for correction of atherogenic dyslipidemias.

Blood plasma uric acid and urea content and aspartate aminotransferase activity were studied in 177 patients with ischemic heart disease and essential hypertension. It was established that the blood uric acid level did not depend essentially on the transamination processes in patients with ischemic heart disease but was closely connected with transamination processes and amino acid metabolism in patients with essential hypertension.

The content of uric acid in blood plasma has been determined and its relation with the homeostatic renal function has been studied in CHD and hypertensive patients. The attenuation of renal filtration processes has been revealed in a half of the 117 patients. The CHD patients have showed a significant relation between the levels of uric acid and protein in blood. There is an immediate correlation between the uric acid content and alpha 2-globulins in patients with CHD and hyperuricemia. It has been suggested that the development of hyperuricemia in CHD patients is dut to the mechanism of disturbances in binding of uric acid to transport blood proteins.

Studies were carried out on the carcinogenic effects of nas, 7,12-dimethylbenz-[a]anthracene (DMBA), DMBA+nas, dimethylnitrosamine (DMNA), diethylnitrosamine (DENA), and N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) when introduced into the buccal pouch of the Syrian hamster. Nas alone induced no tumours in the buccal pouch but tumours at other sites occurred in 18.8% of the treated animals, compared with 4.4% of the controls. Three of 11 hamsters treated with DMBA alone developed tumours. No tumours appeared in the buccal pouch following treatment with DMBA + nas but they developed at other sites in 6 of the 11 hamsters treated. DMNA and DENA induced no macroscopic changes in the mucous membrane of the buccal pouch. Following DMNA administration, tumours developed only in the liver; no tumours developed following the application of DENA. Tumours developed at various sites, including the buccal pouch, in 20 of the 25 hamsters treated with MNU.

A radioimmunoassay was conducted in the pituitary-ovary and pituitary-adrenals systems in 37 cases of endometrial carcinoma before treatment and 1, 3, 5 and 14 days after extirpation of the uterus and adnexa. The levels of follicle-stimulating (FSH) and luteinizing (LH) hormones of the pituitary, prolactin, ACTH, estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol and aldosterone were studied. Such disturbances as decreased production of FSH, LH, progesterone and testosterone were observed before operation. Surgery was followed by a considerable rise in prolactin production and basal levels of FSH and LH, a decrease in estradiol, progesterone and testosterone concentrations and was accompanied by a sizeable release of cortisol and aldosterone.

The report deals with a retrospective analysis of applications of different in vivo and in vitro methods of radionuclide studies (1863) in patients with gynecological tumors in 1972-1985. The said methods were employed for making primary diagnosis, assessing tumor extension as well as for evaluating the effects of tumor growth and the efficacy of radiation and surgical treatment. Apart from offering considerable advantages as diagnostic procedures, radionuclide studies may be used in planning treatment modalities and schemes of rehabilitation of cancer patients. The results also suggest a wider application of nuclear procedures in addressing the diagnostic problems of practice of oncology.

In several series of experiments, nas was introduced into the buccal pouch or oesophagus of Syrian hamsters or applied to the dorsal skin. In one series, nas was administered to six consecutive generations of hamsters. No tumours appeared at the site of administration, although changes appeared in the mucosa of the buccal pouch and the oesophagus. Tumours in organs remote from the site of application developed only in those series in which nas was introduced into the buccal pouch. The commonest site of tumorigenesis was the liver, followed by the adrenal glands, the forestomach, and the genital organs. Tumours occurred in 17.6% of the experimental animals compared with 3.5% of the controls.
