The land surface supplies heat and moisture to the atmosphere influencing the regional climate during the convective season. Availability of soil moisture for evapotranspiration, vegetation phenology and atmospheric conditions influence the strength of the land surface impact on the atmosphere, and the mechanisms predominating the heat and moisture exchange. As both the synoptic conditions as well as the vegetation state vary on sub-seasonal to interannual time scales, the strength of land-atmosphere (L-A) interaction is expected to fluctuate on these time scales.Up to now, research typically either focuses on case studies to understand the mechanisms of how land surface and atmosphere interact, or on climatic time scales to quantify co-variances in the climate system based on a sufficient sample size. Timescales in between remain rarely considered in land-atmosphere feedback studies.In our study, we applied various L-A coupling measures to evaluate land surface impacts on the atmosphere and quantify interactions associated with the triggering of convective precipitation and droughts for all summers between 1991 and 2022 over Europe based on ERA5 data.Our results highlight that differently strong L-A interactions evolve in dependence of atmospheric wetness, temperature, and the circulation pattern, as well as the root zone soil moisture and vegetation cover. Under warm and dry conditions such as in 2003, 2018 and 2022, soil moisture availability imposed limits for evapotranspiration not only in Southern Europe, but also in Central and Eastern Europe, interfering with vegetation growth and atmospheric moisture supply. Limited moisture and excessive heat supply amplified the already high temperatures and low near-surface moisture, which finally aggravated the unfavorable conditions for local precipitation and caused extreme drought conditions. On the contrary, warm and wet conditions such as in 2021 provided well-suited conditions for vegetation growth, which enhanced the moisture supply to the atmosphere. Together with stronger atmospheric instability, this provided more favorable preconditions for convective precipitation. Generally, most L-A interactions perform as an intensifier of persisting anomalies, particularly under warm and dry atmospheric conditions over Europe.

We present the first evaluation of the wind field from the CORDEX-FPS ensemble of kilometer-scale simulations, with focus on the Adriatic region. Kilometer-scale climate models, also known as convection-permitting models (CPMs), produce a good representation of small-scale topographic features and consequently a more detailed depiction of dynamical and thermal circulation. These enable a reliable view of climate characteristics of the wind field, especially in coastal regions and over complex terrain, such as the Adriatic. We investigate the (potential) added value introduced by CPMs compared to classical “cumulus-parametrized” regional climate models (RCMs), reanalysis and station observations. For this purpose, wind components at 10 meter level are used at 3-hourly frequency. All simulations cover a 10-year period, extending from 2000 to 2009. In terms of the standard statistical parameters such as correlation coefficient and temporal standard deviation, CPMs are very dependent on their parent RCM performance. However, the orographic forcing emphasizes the potential added value and CPMs contain some fine spatial scale variability (i.e. stronger extremes by 25% and accurate wind direction) that is absent in coarser RCMs and reanalysis. The potential added value is higher in the cold season compared to the warm season due to the proportion of severe wind events. CPMs reproduce well the typical wind regimes along the Adriatic coast, namely Bora and Sirocco. The benefit of using CPMs is especially pronounced in simulating Bora maximum wind speeds in northern Adriatic and Sirocco frequencies in southern Adriatic. Based on our overall analysis, we conclude that CPMs provide added value compared to coarser models, especially in the complex coastal terrain.

The collaboration between the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) and the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) provides open access to an unprecedented ensemble of regional climate model (RCM) simulations, across the 14 CORDEX continental-scale domains, with global coverage. These simulations have been used as a new line of evidence to assess regional climate projections in the latest contribution of the Working Group I (WGI) to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), particularly in the regional chapters and the Atlas. Here, we present the work done in the framework of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) to assemble a consistent worldwide CORDEX grand ensemble, aligned with the deadlines and activities of IPCC AR6. This work addressed the uneven and heterogeneous availability of CORDEX ESGF data by supporting publication in CORDEX domains with few archived simulations and performing quality control. It also addressed the lack of comprehensive documentation by compiling information from all contributing regional models, allowing for an informed use of data. In addition to presenting the worldwide CORDEX dataset, we assess here its consistency for precipitation and temperature by comparing climate change signals in regions with overlapping CORDEX domains, obtaining overall coincident regional climate change signals. The biophysical effects of reforestation and afforestation (herein jointly called re/afforestation) on the diurnal temperature cycle in European summer are investigated by analyzing a regional climate model (RCM) ensemble, established within the Land Use and Climate Across Scales Flagship Pilot Study (LUCAS FPS). With this RCM ensemble, two idealized experiments are performed for Europe, one with a continent with maximized forest cover, and one in which all forests are turned into grassland. First, an in-depth analysis of one ensemble member (“CCLM-VEG3D”) is carried out, to reveal the complex process chain caused by such land use changes (LUCs). From these findings, the whole ensemble is analyzed and principal biophysical effects of re/afforestation are derived. Results show that the diurnal temperature range is reduced at the surface (top of the vegetation) with re/afforestation. Most RCMs simulate colder surface temperatures Tsurf during the day and warmer Tsurf during the night. Thus, for the first time, the principal temperature interrelations found in observation-based studies in the midlatitudes could be reproduced within a model intercomparison study. On the contrary, the diurnal temperature range in the lowest atmospheric model level (Tair) is increased with re/afforestation. This opposing temperature response is mainly caused by the higher surface roughness of forest, enhancing the turbulent heat exchange. Furthermore, these opposing temperature responses demonstrate that the use of the diagnostic 2-m temperature (weighted interpolation between Tsurf and Tair) has a limited potential to assess the effects of re/afforestation. Thus, studies about the biophysical impacts of LUCs should investigate the whole near-surface temperature profile.

The added value of global simulations on the convection-permitting (CP) scale is a subject of extensive research in the earth system science community. An increase in predictive skill can be expected due to advanced representations of feedbacks and teleconnections in the ocean–land–atmosphere system. However, the proof of this hypothesis by corresponding simulations is computationally and scientifically extremely demanding. We present a novel latitude-belt simulation from 57∘ S to 65∘ N using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF)-Noah-MP model system with a grid increment of 0.03∘ over a period of 5 months forced by sea surface temperature observations. In comparison to a latitude-belt simulation with 45 km resolution, at CP resolution the representation of the spatial-temporal scales and the organization of tropical convection are improved considerably. The teleconnection pattern is very close to that of the operational European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) analyses. The CP simulation is associated with an improvement of the precipitation forecast over South America, Africa, and the Indian Ocean and considerably improves the representation of cloud coverage along the tropics. Our results demonstrate a significant added value of future simulations on the CP scale up to the seasonal forecast range.

The quantification of land–atmosphere coupling strength is still challenging, particularly in the atmospheric segment of the local coupling process chain. This is in part caused by a lack of spatially comprehensive observations of atmospheric temperature and specific humidity which form the verification basis for the common process-based coupling metrics. In this study, we aim at investigating where uncertainty in the atmospheric temperature and moisture affects the land–atmosphere coupling strength over Europe, and how changes in the mean temperature and moisture, as well as their vertical gradients, influence the coupling. For this purpose, we implemented systematic a posteriori modifications to the temperature and moisture fields from a regional climate simulation to create a spread in the atmospheric conditions. Afterwards, the process-based coupling metric convective triggering potential – low-level humidity index framework was applied to each modification case. Comparing all modification cases to the unmodified control case revealed that a strong coupling hotspot region in northeastern Europe was insensitive to temperature and moisture changes, although the number of potential coupling days varied by up to 20 d per summer season. The predominance of positive feedbacks remained unchanged in the northern part of the hotspot, and none of the modifications changed the frequent inhibition of feedbacks due to dry conditions in the atmosphere over the Mediterranean and the Iberian Peninsula. However, in the southern hotspot region in the north of the Black Sea, the dominant coupling class frequently switched between wet soil advantage and transition zone. Thus, both the coupling strength and the predominant sign of feedbacks were sensitive to changes in temperature and moisture in this region. This implies not only uncertainty in the quantification of land–atmosphere coupling strength but also the potential that climate-change-induced temperature and moisture changes considerably impact the climate there, because they also change the predominant atmospheric response to land surface wetness.

International audience; We here inter-compare four different tracking algorithms by applying them onto the precipitation fields of an ensemble of convection-permitting regional climate models (cpRCMs) and on high-resolution observational datasets of precipitation. The domain covers the Alps and the northern Mediterranean and thus we here analyse heavy precipitation events, that are renowned for causing hydrological hazards. In this way, this study is both, an inter-comparison of tracking algorithms as well as an evaluation study of cpRCMs in the Lagrangian frame of reference. The tracker inter-comparison is performed by comparison of two case studies as well as of climatologies of cpRCMs and observations. We find that that all of the trackers produce qualitatively equal results concerning characteristic track properties. This means that, despite of quantitative differences, equivalent scientific conclusions would be drawn. This result suggests that all trackers investigated are reliable analysis tools of atmospheric research. With respect to the model ensemble evaluation, we find an encouraging performance of cpRCMs in comparison to radar-based observations. In particular prominent hotspots of heavy precipitation events are well-reproduced by the models. In general most characteristic properties of precipitation events have positive biases. Assuming the under-catchment of precipitation in observations in a domain of such complex orography, this result is to be expected. Only the mean area of tracks is underestimated, while their duration is overestimated. Mean precipitation rate is estimated well, while maximum precipitation rate is overestimated. Furthermore, geometrical and rain volume are overestimated. We find that models overestimate the occurrence of precipitation events over all mountain chains, whereas over plain terrain in summer precipitation events are seen underestimated. This suggests that, despite the convection-permitting resolution, thermally driven thunderstorms are either not triggered or their dynamics still under-resolved. Eventually we find that biases in the spatio-temporal properties of precipitation events appear reduced when evaluating cpRCMs against Doppler radar-based and rain gauge-adjusted observational datasets of comparable spatial resolution, strengthening their role in evaluation studies.

The increase in computational resources has enabled the emergence of multi-model ensembles of convection-permitting regional climate model (CPRCM) simulations at very high horizontal resolutions. An example is the CORDEX Flagship Pilot Study on “Convective phenomena at high resolution over Europe and the Mediterranean”, a set of kilometre-scale simulations over an extended Alpine domain. This first-of-its-kind multi-model ensemble, forced by the ERA-Interim reanalysis, can be considered a benchmark dataset. This study uses a recently proposed metric to determine the added value of all the available Flagship Pilot Study hindcast kilometre-scale simulations for maximum and minimum temperature. The analysis is performed using state-of-the-art gridded and station observations as ground truth. This approach directly assesses the added value between the high-resolution CPRCMs against their driving global simulations and coarser resolution RCM counterparts. Overall, models display some modest gains, but also considerable shortcomings are exhibited. In part, these deficiencies can be attributed to the assimilation of temperature observations into ERA-Interim. Although the gains for the use of kilometre-scale resolution for temperature are limited, the improvement of the spatial representation of local atmospheric circulations and land–atmosphere interactions can ultimately lead to gains, particularly in coastal areas. In the German regional climate modeling project ReKliEs-De the existing EURO-CORDEX simulations have been systematically complemented by new simulations to derive more robust ranges of possible future climate change. The focus of the project lay on user tailored results, which are required for the planning of measures to adapt to the changing climate. Changes in temperature and precipitation indices are calculated from a multi model ensemble for the end of the 21st century. The results for the mitigation scenario RCP2.6 are compared to the results of the “business as usual” scenario RCP8.5. Averaged over Germany the increase of mean annual temperature and of the number of summer days will be around 3 times higher for RCP8.5 than for RCP2.6. In summer, the increase of dry days could be twice as high in RCP8.5 compared to RCP2.6.

Land-atmosphere coupling can have a crucial impact on convective initiation. Yet, uncertainty remains in the analyses of the atmospheric segment of the coupling between land surface wetness and the triggering of deep moist convection, particularly over Europe. One reason for this is a lack of suitable data. To overcome this limitation, we perturb early-morning temperature and moisture profiles from a regional climate simulation covering the period 1986–2015 over Europe to create a spread in atmospheric conditions. Applying the ‘Convective Triggering Potential – low-level Humidity Index’ framework, we analyze whether and how strongly the coupling strength and the predominance of positive versus negative feedbacks are sensitive to modifications in the atmospheric conditions. The results show that the hotspot region in northeastern Europe, in which strong feedbacks are likely to occur, is insensitive to temperature and moisture changes, but the number of potential feedback days varies by up to 20 days per season in dependence of the atmospheric background conditions. Temperature modifications rather control differences in the coupling strength in the north of the domain, while moisture changes dominant the control in the south. In the north of the hotspot region, a predominance for positive feedbacks (deep convection over wet soils) remains, but a switch of the dominant feedback class between positive feedbacks and a transition zone (convection over any soil, but usually shallow convection) occurred from the Alps to around the Black Sea. This indicates a dependence of the dominant feedback class on temperature and relative humidity in this region.

Currently a strong discussion is ongoing in Germany and Europe whether to ban vehicles from downtown areas in order to lower particle concentrations of e.g. PM10 and NO2. As often only few measurements exist inside city centers, little to nothing is known about the horizontal and vertical distributions of air pollutants. Within the EU demonstration project Open Forecast (https://open-forecast.eu/), we applied the WRF-Chem model system version 4.0.3 in order to close this knowledge gap. We zoom in the urban area of Stuttgart, a hot spot of air pollution in Germany. The outermost domain with convection-permitting resolution of 1.25 km encompasses parts of Central Europe in order to provide boundary conditions for the inner two domains.The model system was improved in many ways, e.g., with respect to the representation of land cover, urban canopy, and soil properties, which turned out to be key for an acceptable performance. Furthermore, we developed a sophisticated infrastructure to ingest the required high-resolution emission data, which turned out to be very challenging.We show that this model approach is likely the best means to understand and to predict air pollution, as the distribution of their constituents depends strongly and simultaneously on the vertical mixing by turbulence, the mesoscale circulation in the complex urban environment, and orographic environment.The model system was operated and investigated for a case study of January 21, 2019 during which an alert with respect to the exceedance of PM10 was issued. We present the simulations of meteorological variables as well as PM10 and NO2 and show the complexity of their distribution in the nighttime stable and daytime shallow boundary layer in dependence of the temporal variability of the traffic in the Stuttgart metropolitan area.To the best of our knowledge, the results reveal for the first time the complex dynamics of air pollution in complex urban space of Stuttgart at a very high spatial and temporal resolution that cannot currently be achieved with measurements.

The state of the land surface can have a crucial influence on the triggering of convection. Investigations of the land-atmosphere coupling strength on the regional scale are still rare, and have been mainly performed using global climate models with coarse resolutions. Increasing the horizontal resolution and the concomitant improved representation of the land surface are expected to refine the representation of feedbacks. A strong limiting factor, especially for process-based studies of the link between surface moisture availability, land cover properties, and convection triggering, is the availability of data with sufficient vertical resolution and temporal coverage. A convenient metric to investigate this link is the ‘Convection Triggering Potential’-‘Low-Level Humidity Index’ framework, which is applied in this study. This process-based coupling metric examines the boundary layer structure based on temperature and humidity profiles to draw conclusions on the potential strength of interactions. However, increasing the resolution of a simulation usually aggravates the amount of storage capacity needed, and in practice the number of vertical levels written out is often decreased to a handful over the total column. Consequently, a comprehensive regional model intercomparison targeting land-convection coupling strength is challenging.In this study, a perturbation approach was applied as an attempt to overcome this limitation. Differences in the choice and configuration of models cause a spread in mean and variance of atmospheric temperature and humidity between models that in turn may impact the outcome of the framework. Perturbation factors of different magnitudes were added to modify summer atmospheric temperature and humidity from a WRF simulation over the entire column on a daily basis. The simulation covered the period 1986-2015 over the EURO-CORDEX domain. The perturbations were chosen to approximate a potential model spread to some extent. Sensitivity in the coupling strength was assessed in relation to the unperturbed case by applying the framework to a range of perturbation cases with differently strong combinations of temperature and humidity changes.We will present results 1) of how warmer, cooler, dryer or moister conditions in the atmosphere changed the frequency of summer days with high feedback potential, 2) how the different conditions influenced the occurrence of positive relative to negative feedbacks, and 3) of spatial differences in the sensitivity of the coupling strength to temperature or humidity modifications, respectively, over Europe.

Studies have shown the benefits of convection-permitting downscaling at the seasonal scale using limited-area models. To evaluate the performance with real forecasts as boundary conditions, four members of the SEAS5 global ensemble were dynamically downscaled over Ethiopia during June, July, and August 2018 at a 3-km resolution. We used a multi‐physics ensemble based on the WRF model to compare the effects of boundary conditions and physics parametrization producing 16 ensemble members. With ECMWF analyses as a reference, SEAS5 averaged to a +0.17°C bias over Ethiopia whereas WRF resulted in +1.14°C. With respect to precipitation, the WRF model simulated 264 mm compared to 248 mm for SEAS5 and 236 mm for GPM-IMERG. The maximum northward extension of the tropical rain belt decreased by about 2° in both models. Downscaling enhanced the ensemble spread in precipitation by 60% on average, correcting the SEAS5 underdispersion. The WRF ensemble spread over Ethiopia was mostly generated by the perturbed boundary conditions, as their effect is often 50% larger than the physics‐induced variability. The results indicate that boundary condition perturbations are necessary, although not always sufficient, to generate the right amount of ensemble spread in a limited-area model with complex topography. The next step is to use specific methods to calculate the added value provided by the downscaling.

Precipitation observations between March to May 2015 show several coherent propagating systems in an area between 10°N and 10°S with a lifetime of 3-4 weeks demonstrating the importance of simulations beyond a month. The eastward propagation speed is typically 1100 km day-1. The main origins of significant amounts of precipitation along this belt are the tropical warm pools in the Western Pacific around 158-174°E and the eastern Indian Ocean around 90°E as well as the tropical rainforest over South America around 69°W.We investigated the lifetime and propagation of tropical precipitating systems based on observations and a near-global convection permitting seasonal simulation with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF). The latitude-belt simulation covers an area between 57°S to 65°N with a grid increment of 0.03° over a period of 5 months forced by sea surface temperature (SST) observations.Results of this simulation with respect to tropical convection were investigated by means of comparison with satellite-based cloud and precipitation observations and ECMWF operational analysis. Wavenumber-frequency spectra of the tropical convection and the detection of various wave pattern were derived from the 3-h outgoing longwave radiation at the top of the atmosphere (TOA OLR) fields and revealed by Wheeler-Kiladis diagrams. The simulation shows the observed spectral signatures of eastward propagating EIGs and Kelvin waves.The EOF decomposition of the monthly averaged sea level pressure fields demonstrates that 65 % of the sea surface pressure fluctuations in the ECMWF analyses can be explained by the correlation pattern shown in the 1st EOF. The agreement with the 1st EOF of the WRF simulation is excellent despite a slight underestimation of the strength of the correlations. The spatial structure is very similar and 61 % of the variance are contained in first EOF. The EOF analyses provided strong evidence that the seasonal simulation with a convection permitting horizontal resolution captures the representation of the teleconnection pattern.

Land-atmosphere energy and water exchanges are fundamentally linked to soil-moisture. The distribution of the planets’ biomes hinges on the surface-atmosphere coupling since soil moisture and temperature feedbacks have a strong influence on plant transpiration and photosynthesis. Land use/land cover changes (LUC) modify locally land surface properties that control the land-atmosphere mass, energy, and momentum exchanges. The impact of these changes depends on the scale and nature of land cover modifications and is very difficult to quantify. However, large inconsistencies in the LUC impacts are observed between models, highlighting the need for common LUC across a large ensemble of models. The Flagship Pilot Study LUCAS (Land Use & Climate Across Scales) provides a coordinated effort to study LUC using an ensemble of regional climate models (RCMs). In the first phase of the project 3 experiments were performed for continental Europe: EVAL (current climate); GRASS (trees replaced by grassland) and FOREST (grasses and shrubs replaced by trees). An analysis of the energy and moisture balance for the three experiments is performed, focusing on the relationship between the fluxes partitioning, heat waves and droughts. To better asses the link between extreme temperatures and soil moisture or evapotranspiration, a new coupling metric for short time scales is proposed, the Latent Heat Flux-Temperature Coupling Magnitude (LETCM). This new metric is computed for a specific period, considering the positive temperature extremes and the negative latent heat flux extremes. Areas with positive magnitude values imply higher temperature anomaly, due to a negative latent heat flux anomaly. This new metric only considers periods of strong coupling, with positive signals in areas of high temperatures and evaporative stress, allowing for the detection of events that are extreme for energy and water cycle. Concurrently, a new decile based normalised drought index is used to examine the concurrent heat extremes and droughts. The analysis focuses on the three experiments revealing that the number, amplitude and spatial distribution of compound extreme heat and drought is highly model dependant. The use of regional climate model‐based projections for providing regional climate information in a research and climate service contexts is currently expanding very fast. This has been possible thanks to a considerable effort in developing comprehensive ensembles of regional climate model (RCM) projections, especially for Europe, in the EURO‐CORDEX community (Jacob et al., 2014; Jacob et al., 2020). Currently, EURO‐CORDEX has developed a set of 55 historical and scenario projections (RCP8.5) using 8 driving global climate models (GCMs) and 11 RCMs. This article presents the ensemble including its design. We target the analysis to better characterize the quality of the regional climate models by providing an evaluation of these RCM simulations over a number of classical climate variables and extreme and impact‐oriented indices for the period 1981‐2010. For the main variables, the model simulations generally agree with observations and reanalyses. However, several systematic biases are found as well, with shared responsibilities among RCMs and GCMs: simulations are overall too cold, too wet and too windy compared to available observations or reanalyses. Some simulations show strong systematic biases on temperature, others on precipitation or dynamical variables but none of the models/simulations can be defined as the best or the worst on all criteria. The article aims at supporting a proper use of these simulations within a climate services context.

International audience; This paper analyzes the ensemble of regional climate model (RCM) projections for Europe completed within the EURO CORDEX project. Projections are available for the two greenhouse gas concentration scenarios RCP2.6 (22 members) and RCP8.5 (55 members) at 0.11° resolution from 11 RCMs driven by eight global climate models (GCMs). The RCM ensemble results are compared with the driving CMIP5 global models but also with a subset of available last generation CMIP6 projections. Maximum warming is projected by all ensembles in Northern Europe in winter, along with a maximum precipitation increase there; in summer, maximum warming occurs in the Mediterranean and Southern European regions associated with a maximum precipitation decrease. The CMIP6 ensemble shows the largest signals, both for temperature and precipitation, along with the largest inter model spread. There is a high model consensus across the ensembles on an increase of extreme precipitation and drought frequency in the Mediterranean region. Extreme temperature indices show an increase of heat extremes and a decrease of cold extremes, with CMIP6 showing the highest values and EURO CORDEX the finest spatial details. This data set of unprecedented size and quality will provide the basis for impact assessment and climate service activities for the European region.

N. Ban et al., Here we present the first multi-model ensemble of regional climate simulations at kilometer-scale horizontal grid spacing over a decade long period. A total of 23 simulations run with a horizontal grid spacing of ∼3 km, driven by ERA-Interim reanalysis, and performed by 22 European research groups are analysed. Six different regional climate models (RCMs) are represented in the ensemble. The simulations are compared against available high-resolution precipitation observations and coarse resolution (∼ 12 km) RCMs with parameterized convection. The model simulations and observations are compared with respect to mean precipitation, precipitation intensity and frequency, and heavy precipitation on daily and hourly timescales in different seasons. The results show that kilometer-scale models produce a more realistic representation of precipitation than the coarse resolution RCMs. The most significant improvements are found for heavy precipitation and precipitation frequency on both daily and hourly time scales in the summer season. In general, kilometer-scale models tend to produce more intense precipitation and reduced wet-hour frequency compared to coarse resolution models. On average, the multi-model mean shows a reduction of bias from ∼ −40% at 12 km to ∼ −3% at 3 km for heavy hourly precipitation in summer. Furthermore, the uncertainty ranges i.e. the variability between the models for wet hour frequency is reduced by half with the use of kilometer-scale models. Air pollution is one of the major challenges in urban areas. It can have a major impact on human health and society and is currently a subject of several litigations in European courts. Information on the level of air pollution is based on near-surface measurements, which are often irregularly distributed along the main traffic roads and provide almost no information about the residential areas and office districts in the cities. To further enhance the process understanding and give scientific support to decision makers, we developed a prototype for an air quality forecasting system (AQFS) within the EU demonstration project “Open Forecast”. For AQFS, the Weather Research and Forecasting model together with its coupled chemistry component (WRF-Chem) is applied for the Stuttgart metropolitan area in Germany. Three model domains from 1.25 km down to a turbulence-permitting resolution of 50 m were used, and a single-layer urban canopy model was active in all domains. As a demonstration case study, 21 January 2019 was selected, which was a heavily polluted day with observed PM10 concentrations exceeding 50 µg m−3. Our results show that the model is able to reasonably simulate the diurnal cycle of surface fluxes and 2 m temperatures as well as evolution of the stable and shallow boundary layer typically occurring in wintertime in Stuttgart. The simulated fields of particulates with a diameter of less than 10 µm (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) allow a clear statement about the most heavily polluted areas apart from the irregularly distributed measurement sites. Together with information about the vertical distribution of PM10 and NO2 from the model, AQFS will serve as a valuable tool for air quality forecasting and has the potential of being applied to other cities around the world.

Land-Use and Land Cover Changes (LULCC) play a fundamental role in land-atmosphere interactions, since they mainly regulate the exchange of latent and sensible heat between the ground and the upper air, while they control the amount of shortwave radiation absorbed by the ground. In this study, we make an attempt to investigate the biogeophysical effects of extreme land cover changes on soil variables, such as soil temperature and soil moisture. In particular, we analyze a multi-model ensemble of nine different regional climate model simulations, which had been performed over the Euro-CORDEX domain in the frame of the WCRP CORDEX Flagship Pilot Study LUCAS (Land Use and Climate Across Scales). We compare two idealized experiments: a maximally forested (called FOREST) and a fully grassed Europe (called GRASS). According to our results, the soil temperature response to forestation varies among the climate models. They show a profound seasonality and dependence by latitude. In winter, the magnitude of soil temperature changes is considered weak, showing a warming in high latitudes (around +1oC on average) and a weak cooling over the Mediterranean region. During the summertime, in contrast, soil temperatures are higher in the GRASS experiment, especially in Central and Southern Europe (ranging from +1oC to +3oC depending to the model), underlying the essential role of soil moisture in determining the land-atmosphere feedbacks during the summer. In our contribution, we will present in detail the role of forest and grass characteristics and its effects on seasonal soil conditions across Europe[DR1] .

The evaluation of the first of its kind multi-model convection permitting - regional climate model (CP-RCM) ensemble, produced within the framework of the international CORDEX - Flagship Pilot Study on Convective phenomena over the Mediterranean (CORDEX-FPS-CEM), showed the improved spatial representation, frequency and extremes of precipitation compared to coarser resolution counterparts (Ban et al., submitted 2019). It is important, though, to keep in mind that the quality of each of such high resolution simulations strongly depend on the quality of the forcing used to drive the model.In this work we investigate the impact of the land-surface forcing on the model representation of land-atmosphere (LA) feedback. For that we used the 2 Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) settings from the CORDEX-FPS-CEM ensemble to run 4 simulations for 2 seasons (summer and fall), combining 2 sets of data for the land cover (MODIS and CORINE) and the top soil texture (FAO and HWSD). In such a way we generated two ensembles with 8 simulations for each season. Additionally we run 4 simulations with perturbed starting date for the summer season to obtain an additional 5-member ensemble to investigate the impact of the internal variability on the final results.The objective of this study is to investigate the model sensitivity to (1) land-surface static forcing, (2) season, and (3) the model configuration. To quantify the strength of LA coupling for each grid, we use coupling metrics appropriate for seasonal time scales. We applied mixing diagram approach to investigate the impact of the land-surface changes on the boundary layer evolution. We also investigate the impact of these changes on the potential for convection triggering, and we calculate correlation matrices to quantify the impact on the strength of the land-atmosphere coupling.Preliminary results show evident effects of the land surface changes on surface variables, boundary layer evolution, atmospheric stability and humidity in the lower atmosphere. Strength of the sensitivity to a specific change in the land-surface forcing depend on the model configuration: WRF with less sophisticated parameterization schemes is more sensitive to land use changes, while more sophisticated configuration shows higher sensitivity to the soil texture changes in representing boundary layer evolution. Interactions between vegetation and atmosphere have a large impact on weather and climate. During the last decade, enormous efforts have been made to improve the representation of vegetation dynamics in land surface models (LSM). The present study extends the LSM Noah-MP by the dynamic crop growth model Gecros that enables simulating the development of crop stands in a weather-driven manner. This extension is a pre-requisite to simulate two-way climate-crop interactions in climate projections. Based on a comprehensive five-year dataset on energy- and water fluxes, and soil water and crop data from two different climate regions of southwest Germany, we adapted the crop growth model Gecros, integrated it with Noah-MP, calibrated the coupled model for winter wheat and maize and tested its robustness in multiple-year validation runs against independent measurements. This sound data set yielded a robust parameterization that performed well both in calibration and in validation runs over in total 16 seasons. Due to pronounced differences in phenology among maize cultivars, wheat simulations were better than maize simulations. The simulated dynamics in leaf area index of wheat and maize differed largely from the one used in standard Noah-MP simulations. The new model yielded pronounced differences in the partitioning of evapotranspiration into transpiration and soil evaporation. The added value of the improved description of vegetation dynamics needs to be evaluated in high-resolution coupled crop-climate simulations in future.

This paper is a contribution to the special issue on Advances in Convection-Permitting Climate Modeling, consisting of papers that focus on the evaluation, climate change assessment, and feedback processes in kilometer-scale simulations and observations., A recently launched project under the auspices of the World Climate Research Program’s (WCRP) Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiments Flagship Pilot Studies program (CORDEX-FPS) is presented. This initiative aims to build first-of-its-kind ensemble climate experiments of convection permitting models to investigate present and future convective processes and related extremes over Europe and the Mediterranean. In this manuscript the rationale, scientific aims and approaches are presented along with some preliminary results from the testing phase of the project. Three test cases were selected in order to obtain a first look at the ensemble performance. The test cases covered a summertime extreme precipitation event over Austria, a fall Foehn event over the Swiss Alps and an intensively documented fall event along the Mediterranean coast. The test cases were run in both “weather-like” (WL, initialized just before the event in question) and “climate” (CM, initialized 1 month before the event) modes. Ensembles of 18–21 members, representing six different modeling systems with different physics and modelling chain options, was generated for the test cases (27 modeling teams have committed to perform the longer climate simulations). Results indicate that, when run in WL mode, the ensemble captures all three events quite well with ensemble correlation skill scores of 0.67, 0.82 and 0.91. They suggest that the more the event is driven by large-scale conditions, the closer the agreement between the ensemble members. Even in climate mode the large-scale driven events over the Swiss Alps and the Mediterranean coasts are still captured (ensemble correlation skill scores of 0.90 and 0.62, respectively), but the inter-model spread increases as expected. In the case over Mediterranean the effects of local-scale interactions between flow and orography and land–ocean contrasts are readily apparent. However, there is a much larger, though not surprising, increase in the spread for the Austrian event, which was weakly forced by the large-scale flow. Though the ensemble correlation skill score is still quite high (0.80). In a recent study, Coppola et al. assessed the ability of an ensemble of convection‐permitting models (CPM) to simulate deep convection using three case studies. The ensemble exhibited strong discrepancies between models, which were attributed to various factors. In order to shed some light on the issue, we quantify in this article the uncertainty associated to different physical parameterizations from that of using different initial conditions, often referred to as the internal variability. For this purpose, we establish a framework to quantify both signals and we compare them for upper atmospheric circulation and near‐surface variables. The analysis is carried out in the context of the CORDEX Flagship Pilot Study on Convective phenomena at high resolution over Europe and the Mediterranean, in which the intermediate RCM WRF simulations that serve to drive the CPM are run several times with different parameterizations. For atmospheric circulation (geopotential height), the sensitivity induced by multi‐physics and the internal variability show comparable magnitudes and a similar spatial distribution pattern. For 2‐m temperature and 10‐m wind, the simulations with different parameterizations show larger differences than those launched with different initial conditions. The systematic effect over 1 year shows distinct patterns for the multi‐physics and the internal variability. The added value of global simulations on the convection-permitting (CP) scale is a subject of extensive research in the earth system science community. An increase in predictive skill can be expected due to advanced representations of feedbacks and teleconnections in the ocean-land-atmosphere system. However, the proof of this hypothesis by corresponding simulations is computationally and scientifically extremely demanding. We present a novel latitude-belt simulation from 57° S to 65° N using the WRF-NOAHMP model system with a grid increment of 0.03° km over a period of 5 months forced by sea surface temperature observations. In comparison to a latitude-belt simulation with 45 km resolution, at CP resolution the representation of the spatial-temporal scales as well as the organization of tropical convection are improved considerably. The teleconnection pattern are very close to that of the operational ECMWF analyses. The CP simulation is associated with an improvement of the precipitation forecast over South America, Africa, and the Indian Ocean and considerably improves the representation of cloud coverage along the tropics. Our results demonstrate a significant added value of future simulations on the CP scale up to the seasonal forecast range.

The Land Use and Climate Across Scales Flagship Pilot Study (LUCAS FPS) is a coordinated community effort to improve the integration of Land Use Change (LUC) in Regional Climate Models (RCMs) and to quantify the biogeophysical effects of LUC on local to regional climate in Europe. In the first phase of LUCAS, nine RCMs are used to explore the biogeophysical impacts of re-/afforestation over Europe. Namely, two idealized experiments representing respectively a non-forested and a maximally forested Europe are compared in order to quantify spatial and temporal variations in the regional climate sensitivity to forestation. We find some robust features in the simulated response to forestation. In particular, all models indicate a year-round decrease in surface albedo, which is most pronounced in winter and spring at high latitudes. This results in a winter warming effect, which is relatively robust across models. However, there are also a number of strongly diverging responses. For instance, there is no agreement on the sign of temperature changes in summer with some RCMs predicting a widespread cooling from forestation, a widespread warming, or a mixed response. A large part of the inter-model spread is attributed to the representation of land processes. In particular, differences in the partitioning of sensible and latent heat are identified as a key source of uncertainty. In contrast, for precipitation, the representation of atmospheric processes dictates more directly the simulated response. In conclusion, the multi-model approach we use here has the potential to deliver more robust and reliable information to stakeholders involved in land use planning, as compared to results based on single models. However, given the contradictory responses identified, our results also show that there are still fundamental uncertainties that need to be tackled to better anticipate the possible intended or unintended consequences of LUC on regional climates.

To date, seasonal forecasts are often performed by applying horizontal resolutions of 75–150 km due to lack of computational resources and associated operational constraints. As this resolution is too coarse to represent fine scale structures impacting the large scale circulation, a convection permitting (CP) resolution of less than 4 km horizontal resolution is required. Most of the simulations are carried out as limited area model (LAMs) and thus require boundary conditions at all four domain boundaries. In this study, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model is applied in a latitude belt set-up in order to avoid the application of zonal boundaries. The horizontal resolution is 0.03\(^{\circ }\) and 0.45\(^{\circ }\) spanning a belt between 65\(^{\circ }\)N and 57\(^{\circ }\)S encompassing 12000 * 4060 * 57 grid boxes for the high-resolution domain. The simulations are driven by ECMWF analysis and high resolution SST data from multiple sources. The simulation period was February 1st–July 1st, 2015 which was a strong El Nino period.

During the 21\(\mathrm{{st}}\) century, not only the global mean surface temperature but also the amount and strength of weather extremes will increase. This is mainly due to the continuous emission of greenhouse gases by human activities. Since warming over many land areas is larger than over the oceans, climate conditions will be regionally highly variable. In order to make regional projections of the climate in the future and to evaluate the ability of models to represent such phenomena, multi-model ensembles of regional climate simulations are required. This is e.g. realized in the World Climate Research Program initiated COordinated Regional climate Downscaling EXperiment CORDEX. The objective of WRFCLIM at HLRS is to contribute to these multi-model ensembles with simulations based on the Weather and Research Forecasting (WRF) model. Five simulations were carried out within the framework of the BMBF funded Project ReKliEs-De (Regionale Klimasimulationen Ensemble fur Deutschland) for the simulation time period 1958–2100 at 12 km resolution. These simulations represent the first WRF climate projections which have been realized on the HLRS supercomputer yet. The results demonstrate that the ensemble members provided by the WRF provide an excellent contribution to the spread of the ReKliEs-De ensemble results. This gives a much better confidence not only in the estimation of the evolution of medians of atmospheric variables due to climate change but also in the estimation of extreme values such as hot and ice days. The corresponding climate indices provided by ReKliEs-De underline the importance for society and economy to mitigate climate change. Furthermore, within the CORDEX Flagship Pilot Study framework simulations are carried out between 1999 and 2014 at 15 km resolution further downscaling to the convection permitting (CP) grid on 3 km in central Europe to assess mainly diurnal cycles and high impact weather. The results and the performance analyses on the CP scale will be fundamental for to the set up and improvement of the next generation climate simulations. Therefore, HLRS and UHOH are prepared to contribute to a series of national and international projects concerning seasonal and climate simulations. The results highlight the necessity of CP simulations for next generation earth system models, and multi-model ensembles to assess climate change, as the latter provide indispensable uncertainty measures for climate change signals and extremes for Germany.

Streamflow depends on the soil moisture of a river catchment and can be measured with relatively high accuracy. The soil moisture in the root zone influences the latent heat flux and hence the quantity and spatial distribution of atmospheric water vapour and precipitation. As numerical weather forecast and climate models require a proper soil moisture initialization for their land surface models, we enhanced an Ensemble Kalman Filter to assimilate streamflow timeseries into the multi-layer land surface model TERRA-ML of the regional weather forecast model COSMO. The impact of streamflow assimilation was studied by an observing system simulation experiment in the Enz River catchment (located at the downwind side of the northern Black Forest in Germany). The results demonstrate a clear improvement of the soil moisture field in the catchment. We illustrate the potential of streamflow data assimilation for weather forecasting and discuss its spatial and temporal requirements for a corresponding, automated river gauging network.

Six simulations with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model differing in planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes and land surface models (LSMs) are investigated in a case study in western Germany during clear-sky weather conditions. The simulations were performed at 2 km resolution with two local and two nonlocal PBL schemes, combined with two LSMs (NOAH and NOAH-MP). Resulting convective boundary layer (CBL) features are investigated in combination with high-resolution water vapor differential absorption lidar measurements at an experimental area. Further, the simulated soil-vegetation-atmosphere feedback processes are quantified applying a mixing diagram approach. The investigation shows that the nonlocal PBL schemes simulate a deeper and drier CBL than the local schemes. Furthermore, the application of different LSMs reveals that the entrainment of dry air depends on the energy partitioning at the land surface. The study demonstrates that the impact of processes occurring at the land surface is not constrained to the lower CBL but extends up to the interfacial layer and the lower troposphere. With respect to the choice of the LSM, the discrepancies in simulating a diurnal change of the humidity profiles are even more significant at the interfacial layer than close to the land surface. This indicates that the representation of land surface processes has a significant impact on the simulation of mixing properties within the CBL.

As these phenomena produce severe economic and societal impacts, it is crucial to get to know their behaviour and their evolution in a future climate. For this reason, the international project CORDEX (Coordinated Regional climate Downscaling Experiment) proposed the Flagship Pilot Study on Convective phenomena at high resolution over Europe and the Mediterranean, focused on the study of convection in Europe. In this initiative, multi-model and multi-physics results and uncertainties of regional climate models (RCMs) are explored by means of ensembles of simulations. In this work, we additionally explore the role of internal variability to explain the differences found in the results by different model configurations. The scope of WRFCLIM is to produce high resolution regional climate simulations with WRF from 1958 to 2100 in the framework of the BMBF funded ReKliEs-De (Regionales Klimaensemble fur Deutschland) and the DFG funded research unit on regional climate change (FOR 1695) on a 0.11∘ (approx. 12 km) grid and further downscale one projection to 0.0275∘ (approx. 3 km) resolution within the FOR 1695 project from 2000 to 2040.

Reliable regional climate projections need improved land-surface-atmosphere models in which land-surface exchange, in particular the role of the vegetation, is well represented. To get a better understanding of the land-surface exchange and as a data basis for model development, parameterization and validation, long-term eddy-covariance measurements were performed over agricultural landscapes in two regions of Southwest Germany with different regional climate: near the northern Upper Rhine Valley with a mild climate and on the Swabian Jura, a low mountain range plateau where the climate is colder and wetter. At each study site we installed three eddy-covariance weather stations and monitored the soil water regime as well as the crop development. We describe the characteristics of the study sites, the experimental field work and data processing. The dynamics of water vapor and energy fluxes over winter wheat, winter oilseed rape and silage maize were evaluated for the time period from 2009 to 2011. The accuracy of the measured energy and matter fluxes limited by statistics and instrumental noise error was better than 10 %. Energy fluxes and albedo were closely linked to crop development. The albedo increased and decreased with LAI. Albedo values up to 0.28 were measured over flowering oilseed rape. The winter crops developed faster in the milder climate. The daily average of latent heat flux was about 10–20 Wm−2 higher and that of sensible heat flux about 5–15 Wm−2 lower there in comparison with the colder climate. Differences between both regions with regard to the turbulent fluxes are assigned to be mainly due to differences in vapor pressure deficit. Actual and prevailing weather conditions had a large impact on energy fluxes so that notable differences of flux dynamics were observed not only between the regions but also at one site for the same crop in different years. The observed long-term flux dynamics are discussed with respect to phenology, regional climate and the impact of prevailing weather conditions.
