When an ordered spin system of a given dimensionality undergoes a second order phase transition the dependence of the order parameter i.e. magnetization on temperature can be well-described by thermal excitations of elementary collective spin excitations (magnons). However, the behavior of magnons themselves, as a function of temperature and across the transition temperature TC, is an unknown issue. Utilizing spin-polarized high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy we monitor the high-energy (terahertz) magnons, excited in an ultrathin ferromagnet, as a function of temperature. We show that the magnons' energy and lifetime decrease with temperature. The temperature-induced renormalization of the magnons' energy and lifetime depends on the wave vector. We provide quantitative results on the temperature-induced damping and discuss the possible mechanism e.g., multi-magnon scattering. A careful investigation of physical quantities determining the magnons' propagation indicates that terahertz magnons sustain their propagating character even at temperatures far above TC., Comment: 5 Pages, 3 Figures

In low-collisionality scenarios exhibiting mitigation of edge localized modes (ELMs), stable ideal kink modes at the edge are excited by externally applied magnetic perturbation (MP)-fields. In ASDEX Upgrade these modes can cause three-dimensional (3D) boundary displacements up to the centimeter range. These displacements have been measured using toroidally localized high resolution diagnostics and rigidly rotating n = 2 MP-fields with various applied poloidal mode spectra. These measurements are compared to non-linear 3D ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equilibria calculated by VMEC. Comprehensive comparisons have been conducted, which consider for instance plasma movements due to the position control system, attenuation due to internal conductors and changes in the edge pressure profiles. VMEC accurately reproduces the amplitude of the displacement and its dependencies on the applied poloidal mode spectra. Quantitative agreement is found around the low field side (LFS) midplane. The response at the plasma top is qualitatively compared. The measured and predicted displacements at the plasma top maximize when the applied spectra is optimized for ELM-mitigation. The predictions from the vacuum modeling generally fails to describe the displacement at the LFS midplane as well as at the plasma top. When the applied mode spectra is set to maximize the displacement, VMEC and the measurements clearly surpass the predictions from the vacuum modeling by a factor of four. Minor disagreements between VMEC and the measurements are discussed. The influence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on the spin-wave dispersion in an Fe double layer grown on W(110) is measured for the first time. It is demonstrated that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction breaks the degeneracy of spin waves and leads to an asymmetric spin-wave dispersion relation. An extended Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian is employed to obtain the longitudinal component of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vectors from the experimentally measured energy asymmetry.

We demonstrate the interplay between quantum well states in Pd and the magnetic anisotropy in Pd/Co/Cu(001) by combined scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and magneto optical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements. Low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals occupied and unoccupied quantum well states (QWS) in atomically flat Pd films on Co/Cu(001). These states give rise to sharp peaks in the differential conductance spectra. A quantitative analysis of the spectra reveals the electronic dispersion of the Pd(001) d-band ($\Delta$$_5$-type) along the $\Gamma$-X direction. \textit{In-situ} MOKE experiments on Pd/Co/Cu(1, 1, 13) uncover a periodic variation of the in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy as a function of Pd thickness with a period of 6 atomic layers Pd. STS shows that QWS in Pd cross the Fermi level with the same periodicity of 6 atomic layers. Backed by previous theoretical work we ascribe the variation of the magnetic anisotropy in Co to QWS in the Pd overlayer. Our results suggest a novel venue towards tailoring uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of ferromagnetic films by exploiting QWS in an adjacent material with large spin-orbit coupling., Comment: 9 pages including 6 figures

Our first-principles study has revealed unexpected spin polarization of the Pd(001) substrate in contact with antiferromagnetic CoO overlayers. We give an evidence that the ferromagnetism of Pd is caused by the zigzag positions of Co atoms with respect to the Pd interface, resulted from the lattice-mismatch driven structural relaxation. Thanks to the itinerant nature of its 4d electrons, we see that the ferromagnetic properties of Pd are highly sensitive to the local environment and can be enhanced further by increasing the thickness of CoO overlayer film or/and by applying an additional uniaxial pressure along c-axis exerted externally on the bottom layers of the Pd substrate. Our finding provides new functionality for the interfacial moments of the CoO/Pd system, which can be accessed experimentally, e.g., by the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) or/and by element-resolved X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurement.

We present an x-ray spectromicroscopic investigation of single-crystalline magnetic FeMn/Co bilayers on Cu(001), using X-ray magnetic circular (XMCD) and linear (XMLD) dichroism at the Co and Fe L3 absorption edges in combination with photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM). Using the magnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic Co layer and the antiferromagnetic FeMn layer we are able to produce magnetic domains with two different crystallographic orientations of the magnetic easy axis within the same sample at the same time. We find a huge difference in the XMLD contrast between the two types of magnetic domains, which we discuss in terms of intrinsic magneto-crystalline anisotropy of XMLD of the Co layer. We also demonstrate that due to the high sensitivity of the method, the small number of induced ferromagnetic Fe moments at the FeMn-Co interface is sufficient to obtain magnetic contrast from XMLD in a metallic system.

We have investigated three-dimensional magnetization structures in numerous mesoscopic Fe/Mo(110) islands by means of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism combined with photoemission electron microscopy (XMCD-PEEM). The particles are epitaxial islands with an elongated hexagonal shape with length of up to 2.5 micrometer and thickness of up to 250 nm. The XMCD-PEEM studies reveal asymmetric magnetization distributions at the surface of these particles. Micromagnetic simulations are in excellent agreement with the observed magnetic structures and provide information on the internal structure of the magnetization which is not accessible in the experiment. It is shown that the magnetization is influenced mostly by the particle size and thickness rather than by the details of its shape. Hence, these hexagonal samples can be regarded as model systems for the study of the magnetization in thick, mesoscopic ferromagnets., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

The atomic structures of clean and hydrogen-adsorbed Pd(001) are investigated by low energy electron diffraction (LEED) I/V analysis. Clean Pd(001) shows little surface relaxation in sharp contrast to previous reports. Adsorbing 1 monolayer of hydrogen on Pd(001), we observe sizable expansion of the interlayer spacing of the first two surface layers, $d_{12}$ by 4.7% of the corresponding one of bulk Pd. Both experimental observations are in excellent agreement with the predictions of recent {\it ab initio} calculations. A series of experiments with varying coverages of hydrogen adsorbed on Pd(001), reveals that $d_{12}$ monotonically increases with the increasing coverage. Such an observation strongly supports the contention that the previous observation of expanded $d_{12}$ in clean Pd(001) results from contamination of the surface by residual hydrogen., Comment: 6 pages, 5figures

We have measured the in-plane angular variation of nucleation and annihilation fields of a multi-domain magnetic single dot with a microsquid. The dots are Fe/Mo(110) self-assembled in UHV, with sub-micron size and a hexagonal shape. The angular variations were quantitatively reproduced by micromagnetic simulations. Discontinuities in the variations are observed, and shown to result from bifurcations related to the interplay of the non-uniform magnetization state with the shape of the dot., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, for submission as a regular article
