The article is devoted to the analysis of a geography teacher’s mathematical competence, in particular, to the definition of geography teacher’s mathematical competence in the system of his professional competencies, substantiation of its content and structure, development of approaches to its measurement. The research presented in the article uses mainly theoretical methods of systems analysis, theoretical modeling of the pedagogical process, soft expert evaluation, selective methods. It is shown that the analysis of the structure of geography teacher’s professional competence allows to distinguish geography teacher’s mathematical competence of a as a subsystem of subject competence that is defined as an integral quality of personality, which is the ability and willingness to use mathematics to perform operational, epistemological and analytical functions with training. The formed and well-developed mathematical competence of a geography teacher allows carrying out active propaedeutics of strategic mathematical concepts. It is shown that it is possible to work with graphs, dynamical systems, optimization problems, basics of geometry of curves and surfaces on a background level in the course of geography. In order to determine the content and structuring of the mathematical competence of a geography teacher, activity matrices are used, which reflect the projection of mathematical activity on the geography teacher professional activity. The importance of the relevant elements of mathematical activity is assessed expertly on a four-point scale. Analysis of the geography teacher professional activity allows us to identify six levels of geography teacher’s mathematical competence. The content of mathematical competence is described in the article on a recurrent principle. An approach for measuring the levels of geography teacher’s mathematical competence is proposed. For each level of mathematical competence, a level indicator is introduced as the probability of solving any problem from a population of problems that are typical for the corresponding level. Under conditions of equal probability of the main types of tasks for the sample of 79 respondents, the required level of mathematical competence format activity teachers of geography is determined, estimates of the indicator of geography teachers’ mathematical competence at the first level are obtained. The main problems of geography teachers’ mathematical competence at the first level are detected, that, in general, can be attributed to the insufficient computing, statistical, logical and measuring-geometric culture of the teacher. Research illustrates the need to develop organizational forms, methods and tools for the development of mathematical competence of geography teachers in the system of postgraduate pedagogical education., Проаналізовано математичну компетентність вчителя географії в системі його професійних компетентностей, обґрунтовано зміст і структуру, розробку підходів до її вимірювання. Застосовано переважно теоретичні методи системного аналізу, теоретичне моделювання педагогічного процесу, м’яке експертне оцінювання, вибіркові методи. Показано, що аналіз структури професійної компетентності вчителя географії дозволяє виокремити математичну компетентність, як підсистему предметної компетентності, що визначається як інтегральна якість особистості, що полягає у здатності та готовності використовувати математику для здійснення операційних, гносеологічних та аналітичних функцій діяльності вчителя, пов’язаної з навчанням. Сформована математична компетентність вчителя географії дозволяє здійснювати активну пропедевтику стратегічних математичних понять. Аналіз професійної діяльності вчителя географії дає змогу визначити шість рівнів математичної компетентності. Вказано, що формат діяльності вчителя визначає необхідний для цього рівень математичної компетентності. Запропоновано підхід для вимірювання рівнів математичної компетентності вчителів географії. Отримано оцінки індикатора математичної компетентності вчителів географії на першому рівні. Виявлено основні проблеми математичної компетентності вчителів географії на цьому рівні, які загалом можна відносити до несформованої обчислювальної, статистичної, логічної та вимірювально-геометричної культури вчителя.
