7. A Scaffolded Reading and Writing Course for Foundation Level Science Students

Abstract

Acquisition of academic literacy is often a difficult process for students, and in South Africa this is compounded by the fact that education for most secondary school pupils takes place in a second language at under-resourced schools. This article describes the scaffolding of an academic literacy course designed for South African students from such schools, who enter science study through alternative access routes. An approach to selecting and rewriting texts as well as scaffolding methods for reading and writing are described and illustrated with examples. Since our entrants have had limited prior exposure to text and academic writing, an academic literacy course is needed in which texts are level-appropriate, and reading instruction is scaffolded. Writing instruction, in which students are supported by means of extensive tutor response to drafts, focuses on pedagogically important genres in science, particularly the laboratory report and essay.

Abstract

International audience; Improvements in public health and health care have resulted in significant increases in lifespan globally, but also to a significant increase in chronic disease prevalence. This has led to focus on healthy aging bringing a shift from a pathology centered to an intrinsic capacity and function centered view. In parallel, the emerging field of geroscience has promoted the exploration of the biomolecular drivers of ageing towards a transverse vision by proposing an integrated set of molecular hallmarks. In this review, we propose to take a step further in this direction, highlighting a gerophysiological perspective that considers the notion of homeostasis/allostasis to robustness/fragility respectively. While robustness is associated with homeostasis achieved by an optimal structure/function relationship in all organs, successive repair processes occurring after daily injuries and infections result in accumulation of scar healing leading to progressive tissue degeneration, allostasis and frailty. Considering biological aging as the accumulation of scarring at the level of the whole organism emphasizes three body transverse and shared key elements– mesenchymal stroma cells/immunity/metabolism i.e. SIM and play down parenchyma cells. This SIM tryptich drives tissue and organ fate and appears as a shared and common reservoir to regulate the age-related evolution of body functions. It provides the basis of a gerophysiology perspective, possibly representing a better way to decipher healthy ageing, not only by defining a composite biomarker(s) but also by developing new preventive/curative strategies.

Abstract

Clonally expanded mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations resulting in focal respiratory chain deficiency in individual cells are proposed to contribute to the ageing of human tissues that depend on adult stem cells for self-renewal; however, the consequences of these mutations remain unclear. A good animal model is required to investigate this further; but it is unknown whether mechanisms for clonal expansion of mtDNA mutations, and the mutational spectra, are similar between species. Here we show that mice, heterozygous for a mutation disrupting the proof-reading activity of mtDNA polymerase (PolgA(+/mut)) resulting in an increased mtDNA mutation rate, accumulate clonally expanded mtDNA point mutations in their colonic crypts with age. This results in focal respiratory chain deficiency, and by 81 weeks of age these animals exhibit a similar level and pattern of respiratory chain deficiency to 70-year-old human subjects. Furthermore, like in humans, the mtDNA mutation spectrum appears random and there is an absence of selective constraints. Computer simulations show that a random genetic drift model of mtDNA clonal expansion can accurately model the data from the colonic crypts of wild-type, PolgA(+/mut) animals, and humans, providing evidence for a similar mechanism for clonal expansion of mtDNA point mutations between these mice and humans.
